Abstract

When Fe‐inefficient plants were grown in mixtures of calcareous Hacienda loam soil and noncalcareous Yolo loam soil compared with plants grown in unmixed soils, characteristics and composition of the plants including Fe deficiency were generally intermediate to those with either soil alone. Noncalcareous soil adjacent to calcareous soil allowed PI 54619–5–1 soybeans (Glycine max L.) to obtain sufficient Fe.  相似文献

Abstract

The extraction of a field‐moist soil with DTPA will result in a level of extractable iron (Fe) lower than that of the air‐dried soil. Soil gas‐phase carbon dioxide (CO2) levels may be considerably higher than ambient atmospheric levels, especially in wet soils in the field. This study was undertaken to determine whether gas‐phase CO2 level influences the quantity of Fe extracted by DTPA. Three moist calcareous soils were incubated for 21 days, each at three different partial pressures of CO2, after which the moist soils were extracted with DTPA. A sample of each soil was also air dried, and was subsequently extracted with DTPA. In each case, DTPA‐extractable Fe from the moist sample was lower than that from the air‐dried sample; however, DTPA‐extractable Fe increased with increasing CO2 partial pressure of in the moist soils. DTPA‐extractable Fe concentration for a given soil following air drying was not significantly influenced by the CO2 partial pressure during incubation of the originally field‐moist soil. DTPA‐extract pH of the moist soils followed the same trend as soil‐solution pH (i.e., as CO2 concentration of the soil gas‐phase increased, soil solution pH and DTPA extract pH both decreased); however, the slope of the pH versus log PCO2 curve was less pronounced in the DTPA extract due to the buffering capacity of the triethanolamine. From this study, it is concluded that elevated soil gas‐phase CO2 partial pressure does not contribute to the lower level of DTPA‐extractable Fe observed when the extraction is performed on a field‐moist versus an air‐dried soil; increased CO2 partial pressure actually resulted in a slight increase in concentration of DTPA‐extractable Fe obtained from a field‐moist soil.  相似文献

The effect of six different zinc (Zn) application methods on grain yield and concentrations of Zn in whole shoots and grain was studied in wheat cultivars (Triticum aestivum, L. cvs. Gerek‐79, Dagdas‐94 and Bezostaja‐1 and Triticum durum, Desf. cv. Kunduru‐1149) grown on severely Zn‐deficient calcareous soils (DTPA‐extractable Zn: 0.12 mg‐kg‐1 soil) of Central Anatolia which is the major wheat growing area of Turkey. Zinc application methods tested were: a) control (no Zn application), b) soil, c) seed, d) leaf, e) soil+leaf, and f) seed+leaf applications. Irrespective of the method, application of Zn significantly increased grain yield in all cultivars. Compared to the control, increases in grain yield were about 260% with soil, soil+leaf, and seed+leaf, 204% with seed and 124% with leaf application of Zn. In a similar manner, biomass production (dry weight of above‐ground parts) was increased by Zn treatments. The highest increase (109%) was obtained with the soil application and the lowest increase (40%) with the leaf application. Significant effects of Zn application methods were also found on the yield components, i.e., spike number.m‐2, grain number‐spike‐1, and thousand kernel weight. Spike number.m‐2 was affected most by Zn applications, particularly by soil and soil+leaf applications. Concentrations of Zn in whole shoots and grain were greatly affected by different Zn treatments. In plants without added Zn, concentrations of Zn were about 10 mg‐kg‐1 both in shoots and grain and increased to 18 mg‐kg‐1 dry weight (DW) by soil application of Zn, but not affected by seed application of Zn. Soil+leaf application of Zn had the highest increase in concentration of Zn in shoot (82 mg‐kg‐1 DW) and grain (38 mg‐kg‐1 DW). Soil application of Zn was economical and had long‐term effects for enhancing grain yield of wheat grown on Zn deficient soils. When high grain yield and high Zn concentration in grains are desired, soil+leaf application of Zn was most effective method of Zn application.  相似文献

Abstract

We examined soil potassium (K) supply capacity as related to wheat response to K fertilization, using a cation exchange membrane (CEM) burial technique to measure potential K supply rate. A growth chamber experiment was conducted to determine soil and plant response relationships. Canadian Prairie Spring wheat (Triticum aestivum ’Biggar') was grown on three soils of different initial K fertility with three rates of added K. Wheat response to K fertilization was well related to the amount of exchangeable K and K supply rate in the soil. Soils with high initial K supply rate demonstrated an adequate K release rate which was associated with low response to added K fertilizer. A soil K supply rate less than 5 μg cm2 hr‐1 represented soil K supply power that is less than optimal for wheat nutrition.  相似文献

Although a positive response to iron (Fe) is, usually, expected in calcareous soils; this has not been always the case; and in some instances a depressing effect has been observed. An induced micronutrient imbalance is suspected. This experiment was designed to study the effect of Fe fertilizer on the plant micronutrients. Twenty three highly calcareous soils (18–46% calcium carbonate equivalent; pH 7.7–8.4; and a wide range of extractable Fe) from southern Iran were used in an eight‐week greenhouse experiment to study the effect of Fe fertilizers on soybean [Glycine max (L.) Merr.] growth and chemical composition. The statistical design was a 23 × 3 factorial arranged in a completely randomized block with three replications. Treatments consisted of 23 soils and three levels of applied Fe (0, 10, and 20 mg Fe/kg as FeEDDHA). Uniform doses of nitrogen (N), phosphorus (P), copper (Cu), manganese (Mn), and zinc (Zn) were applied to all pots. Dry matter (DM) and micronutrients concentrations and uptakes of plant tops were determined and used as the plant responses. Application of Fe either had no significant effect on DM or even decreased it. The plant concentration and uptake of Fe increased significantly in all soils. The concentrations and uptakes of Cu and Zn did not change but those of Mn decreased significantly. The negative effect of Fe application was, therefore, attributed to the interference of Fe with Mn nutrition. The mechanism involved appears to be the restriction in Mn translocation from soil to root and/or from root to the plant tops.  相似文献

Abstract

The variability in corn yield responses to applications of Zn fertilizer appears to be associated with several complex soil and climatic factors that affect the availability of endogenous soil Zn to the crop under specific conditions. Among the soil chemical properties that influence availability of endogenous Zn are soil pH, organic matter content, and extractable P. Over a period of several years, soil and plant analysis data were collected from 54 field experiments, field trials, and diagnostic visits to producer's fields. These data were subjected to multiple regression analysis, resulting in an equation: Znleaf = 37.14 + 1.513 Znst ‐4.04 pHst ‐ 1.791 ln(Pst/100) where Znst, pHst, and Pst were 0.1N HC1 extractable soil Zn (kg/ha), 1:1 soil‐water pH, and Bray's 1 extractable soil P (kg/ha), respectively. These factors accounted for 67% of variation in leaf Zn, which was a large portion of the variability in Znleaf considering that climatic conditions, management levels, and varietal differences were uncontrolled in most instances. Using the previously published critical level in the leaf opposite and below the ear as 17 μg Zn/g, these data can be used to set required soil test levels of Zn at different levels of extractable P and soil pH. Inadequate levels of extractable Zn would range from 2.5 (at pH 6.0, P = 70 kg/ha) to, 9.5 kg/ha (at pH 7.5, P = 420 kg/ha).  相似文献

Abstract

Field experiments were conducted on calcareous and non‐calcareous Orthic Black Chemozemic soils over a five year period to study the effect of rates and placements of P‐fertilizer on Canadian rape (Brassica napus L. cv Tower) production. Six rates of P as mono‐ammonium phosphate (MAP) were applied at seeding using four placement methods: i) broadcast and cultivated 10 cm into the soil (BC); ii) banded in the seed row with the seed (PWS); iii) banded 2.5 below and 2.5 cm to the side of the seed (PSS); iv) banded 2.5 cm directly below the seed (PBS). Soil type had no significant effect on rape growth, seed yield and P‐uptake. Rape responded best to P‐fertilizer banded with (PWS) or near (PSS, PBS) the seed. But, placing 15 kg/ha P or greater with the seed reduced seedling emergence; with 25 kg P/ha insufficient plants emerged to justify harvesting. The reduced seedling emergence resulted in reduced seed yield and P‐uptake. Maximum yields were obtained when the fertilizer was banded 2.5 cm away from the seed (PSS, PBS). The BC method produced the least growth, yield and P‐uptake responses of the four methods. Only when broadcast rates of P were in excess of 10 kg/ha did rape dry matter, seed and P‐uptake increase. Banding 10 kg/ha with or near to the seed was equivalent to broadcasting 25 kg/ha in terms of seed yield and P‐uptake. Application of P fertilizer also increased seed protein and oil concentrations.  相似文献

A study was undertaken to evaluate the yield, fruit size, and vegetative growth of three strawberry cultivars inoculated with three vesicular‐arbuscular mycorrhizal (VAM) species at three phosphorus (P) fertility levels. Vesicular‐arbuscular mycorrhiza inoculation and P fertility had no effect on inflorescence or flower number, total yield, fruit weight, or crown number. Higher levels of P did not increased total dry shoot weight, total fresh shoot, weight leaf area, total dry root weight, and leaf number in the present of VAM. However, the cultivars responded differently to VAM inoculation. Vesicular‐ arbuscular mycorrhiza inoculation in combination with P at all levels increased total dry and fresh shoot weight, leaf area, and leaf number compared to application of P alone. The results indicated that it may be possible to increase strawberry stolon production by inoculating the strawberry plants with VAM, a technique which might be useful in nurseries to produce certified strawberry plants.  相似文献

Abstract

The interaction of gamma‐irradiated sewage sludge, nitrogen and phosphorus fertilizers on dry matter production, phosphorus concentration and phosphorus uptake of sorghum was examined. Three crops of sorghum were grown in the greenhouse in 19 1 plastic buckets. The phosphorus and sludge treatments were applied at the initiation of the experiment only. Nitrogen was applied to the corresponding nitrogen treatment pots before each of the three croppings.

There was a significant nitrogen x sewage interaction for dry matter production, phosphorus concentration and phosphorus uptake in each harvest. There was a significant phosphorus sewage sludge interaction in the first harvest for phosphorus uptake. All other possible interactions were not statistically significant. The 67 metric ton/ha sludge rate produced nearly the same yield as the nitrogen treatment. In the first harvest, sludge significantly increased plant phosphorus uptake from the fertilizer phosphorus. The phosphorus uptake in sorghum from 472 and 944 kg P/ha from the sludge treatments was comparable to that from 1299 and 2598 kg P/ha from triple superphosphate.  相似文献

Abstract

About 35% of soils in Venezuela are acid and low in available phosphorus (P). To solve this problem farmers lime and apply phosphate fertilizers to the soils, but both lime and fertilizers are expensive. A good alternative to overcome soil acidity is the use of aluminum (Al)‐tolerant cultivars. The objective of this study was to test the hypothesis, by use of a pot experiment, that sorghum cultivars tolerant to Al toxicity are able to use P from phosphate rock more efficiently than are susceptible cultivars. Three sorghum (Sorghum bicolor L. Moench) cultivars, Chaguaramas III (Ch), AI‐tolerant, Decalb D59 (D59), and Pioneer 8225 (Pi), both Al‐susceptible, were grown in the greenhouse for 20 and 35 days in two acid soils fertilized with 0 and 100 mg P kg‐1 as triple superphosphate (SP) and Riecito phosphate rock (PR). Santa Maria soil was very low in available P (2 mg kg‐1) and highly saturated in Al saturation (64.5%) and Pao soil was higher in available P (20 mg kg‐1) and low in Al saturation (6.5%). Chaguaramas dry matter production, P uptake and root length was higher in Santa Maria soil as compared with Pi and D59 when grown with both SP and PR fertilization. Chaguaramas response to PR in Pao soil was not as good as in Santa Maria soil. The results of our experiment suggest that Al‐tolerant Ch is able to utilize P from PR more efficiently in soils like Santa Maria than Al‐susceptible cultivare Pi and D59.  相似文献

The relative rates of ferric‐iron (Fe3+) reduction and uptake by two citrus rootstocks were measured for a series of synthetic Fe3+ chelates and microbial siderophores. The rates of Fe3+ reduction by the citrus seedlings followed the order: FeHEDTA >> FeDPTA > FeCDTA. No reduction occurred for FeDFOB (ferrioxamine B) and FeTAF (ferric triacetylfusagen). Low rates of Fe3+ reduction occurred for Fe2RA3 (ferric rhodotorulic acid). The levels of 55Fe taken up the citrus seedlings showed good correlations with the reduction rates. These results indicate the importance of Fe3+ reduction in the Fe uptake by citrus rootstocks. The immobility of a large percent of the 55Fe taken up by the roots is attributed to the accumulation of Fe in the root apoplasts.  相似文献

Abstract

‘Dodd’ pecan seedlings were exposed to 3 levels of soil aeration for 30 days; 100%, 5%, and 0% of the container surface exposed to the atmosphere. These treatments resulted in about 21%, 13.5%, and 3% soil O2and 0.3%, 5%, and 13% soil CO2for 100%, 5%, and 0% of the container surface exposed, respectively. Restricting soil aeration induced partial stomatal closure, and decreased leaf number, leaf area, and leaf, trunk and root dry weights. The decrease in root dry weight associated with reduced soil aeration exceeded the decrease in top dry weight by about 50%. Translocation of N and P to the leaves was reduced when soil aeration was restricted, but root N and P concentrations were increased compared to trees grown in well aerated soil. Leaf elemental concentrations of Ca, Mg, and Mn were lower when trees were exposed to reduced soil aeration. Zinc and Fe concentrations were greater in the roots of trees with low aeration, but leaf and trunk concentrations of Zn and Fe were not affected  相似文献

Rice grown on the organic soils of the Everglades is routinely fertilized with silicon (Si). The objective of this research was to investigate changes in nitrogen (N) and phosphorus (P) concentration in various plant parts in response to Si fertilization. Two cultivars were grown in lysimeters filled with low‐Si soil. Half the lysimeters were fertilized with calcium silicate to provide 2Mg Si ha‐1 and the other lysimeters remained unfertilized as a control. Nitrogen concentration decreased in all plant parts with Si fertilization. Phosphorus concentration increased with Si. Maturity was earlier in the Si fertilized rice.  相似文献

Effects of varied irrigation and zinc (Zn) fertilization (0, 7, 14, 21 kg Zn ha‐1 as ZnSO47.H2O) on grain yield and concentration and content of Zn were studied in two bread wheat (Triticum aestivum), two durum wheat (Triticum durum), two barley (Hordeum vulgare), two triticale (xTriticosecale Wittmark), one rye (Secale cereale), and one oat (Avena sativa) cultivars grown in a Zn‐deficient soil (DTPA‐extractable Zn: 0.09 mg kg‐1) under rainfed and irrigated field conditions. Only minor or no yield reduction occurred in rye as a result of Zn deficiency. The highest reduction in plant growth and grain yield due to Zn deficiency was observed in durum wheats, followed by oat, barley, bread wheat and triticale. These decreases in yield due to Zn deficiency became more pronounced under rainfed conditions. Although highly significant differences in grain yield were found between treatments with and without Zn, no significant difference was obtained between the Zn doses applied (7–21 kg ha‐1), indicating that 7 kg Zn ha‐1 would be sufficient to overcome Zn deficiency. Increasing doses of Zn application resulted in significant increases in concentration and content of Zn in shoot and grain. The sensitivity of various cereals to Zn deficiency was different and closely related to Zn content in the shoot but not to Zn amount per unit dry weight. Irrigation was effective in increasing both shoot Zn content and Zn efficiency of cultivars. The results demonstrate the existence of a large genotypic variation in Zn efficiency among and within cereals and suggest that plants become more sensitive to Zn deficiency under rainfed than irrigated conditions.  相似文献

The effects of DBP (Dibutyl phthalate) and PA (Phthalic acid) supplied to the nutrient medium of Fe‐deficiency stressed sorghum cultivars, CSH‐5, 2077‐A, and CS‐3541 were examined. It was found that both the chemicals (50 mg/1) caused recovery of the cultivars CSH‐5 and 2077‐A in 4 days of treatment. Furthermore, the growth of roots, especially the adventitious roots, was increased by the chemicals.  相似文献

Field experiments were carried out to study the effect of different seed‐zinc (Zn) content on grain yield and grain Zn concentration in a bread wheat cultivar Atay 85 grown in a severely Zn‐deficient soil under rainfed and irrigated conditions for two years. Three groups of seeds with Zn contents of 355, 800, and 1,465 ng Zn seed‐1 were obtained through different number of foliar applications of ZnSO4.7H2O in the previous crop year. Experiments were carried out with 23 kg Zn ha‐1 (as ZnSO4.7H2O) and without Zn fertilization to the soil. Grain yield from seeds with 800 and 1,465 ng Zn seed‐1 content was significantly higher than that from low seed‐Zn, especially under rainfed conditions. In the first year, under rainfed and Zn‐deficient conditions, yield of plants grown from the highest seed‐Zn content was 116% higher than the yield of plants grown from the low seed‐Zn content. However, in the first year soil‐Zn application combined with low‐Zn seed resulted in a yield increase of 466% compared to nill Zn treatment with low‐Zn seed, indicating that higher seed‐Zn contents could not compensate for the effects of soil Zn application. Soil Zn application significantly increased Zn concentrations in shoot and grain. However, the effect of different seed Zn contents on Zn concentrations of plants was not significant, probably due to the dilution of Zn in tissues resulting from enhanced dry matter production. The results presented show that wheat plants grown from seed with high Zn content can achieve higher grain yields than those grown from the low‐Zn seed when Zn was not applied to the soil. Therefore, sowing seeds with higher Zn contents can be considered a practical solution to alleviate Zn deficiency problem, especially under rainfed conditions in spite of it being insufficient to completely overcome the problem.  相似文献

Abstract

We compared sequential and separate extraction procedures for estimating non‐crystalline and crystalline aluminum (Al) and iron (Fe) in a floodplain forest soil. We used 0.2M acid ammonium oxalate (pH 3.0) to estimate non‐crystalline Al and Fe, dithionite‐citrate‐bicarbonate to estimate crystalline Fe, and 0.1M sodium hydroxide (NaOH) to estimate crystalline Al. Both separate and various combinations of sequential extractions were compared, as well as variations in soil:solution ratio, extraction time, extraction temperature, and the use of field‐moist versus dried soils. A sequential oxalate/NaOH extraction, using 0.4 g dry weight equivalent of field‐moist soil and a soil:solution ratio of 1:100, gave the best estimate of non‐crystalline Al and Fe and crystalline Al, while a separate 16 hour DCB extraction at room temperature, using 0.8 g dry weight equivalent of field‐moist soil and a soil:solution ratio of 1:50, gave the best estimate for non‐crystalline plus crystalline Fe. A sequential oxalate/NaOH extraction followed by a separate DCB extraction is a relatively simple procedure for estimating amounts of non‐crystalline and crystalline Al and Fe in large numbers of soil samples.  相似文献

Abstract

The effect of pH on the saturated hydraulic conductivity (K) of repacked columns of two non‐sodic soils (Healaugh and Fagaga soils) was examined. The K value was greater for the Fagaga soil than for the Healaugh soil which is attributed to the difference in the amount of free iron oxides between the soils. The K values reached a maximum when the pH was close to the point of zero net charge (PZNC) (3.7 and 4.8 for the Healaugh and the Fagaga soil, respectively) and decreased on either side of these pH values. The effect of pH on K was related to its effect on surface charge. As the pH of variable‐charge soils approaches the PZNC, the net surface charge decreases resulting in flocculation and maintenance of a high K. Conversely, as the pH deviates from the PZNC, the net surface charge increases, resulting in dispersion and a decrease in K. There was a negative relationship between the amount of dispersed clay and the K values, suggesting that clay dispersion and the resulting clogging of pores decreases K in these soils.  相似文献

Abstract

The frequent concentration‐ranges of various nutrient elements in soils and in plants are compared. Iron is different from almost all other nutrient elements in the fact that its optimal concentration range in plants is much lower than its frequent concentration range in soils. It is suggested that this observation is related to a chemical‐physiological mechanism of control on the uptake of iron by plants which in turn may explain the situations in which iron deficiency conditions in plants arise.  相似文献
