Abstract

Results of an experiment comparing six times of herbicidal application showed that an application of the amine salt of 2,4-D at the rate of 1.0 kg/ha at 50% flowering of the weeds had the most detrimental effect on viable seed production of both winter and rainy season weeds as judged from their germination tests. Delay in the application time of 2,4-D by one week increased seed viability by 150 and 55% in rainy and winter season respectively. Delay of each week in application tended to significantly increase viable seed production. Germination percentage of Triantherna portulacastrum, Digera arvensis, Amaranthus viridis, Amaranthus spinosus, Physalis minima, Phyllanthus niruri, Echinochloa colonum, Acalypha celiata, Flavaria contra-yerba and Cyperus rotundus growing in kharif season when treated at flowering stage was 0,0,0,0,2,0,16,0,14, and 0% respectively as against 44, 66, 76, 58, 82, 66, 90, 26, 92 and 61% respectively for untreated seeds.

In the case of winter weeds, germination percentage of Cornopus didymus, Anagallis arvensis, Melilotus indica, Chenopodium album, Chenopodium murale, Convolvulus arvensis, Spergula arvensis, Argemone mexicana, Asphodelus tenuifolius and Sonchus arvensis when treated at flowering stage was 0, 2.7, 0, 5.3, 2.7, 0, 0, 0, 0 and 0% respectively as against 8.0, 30.7, 40.0, 32.0, 33.3, 38.7, 16.3, 18.7, 25.3 and 12.7% respectively for untreated seeds.  相似文献

A survey of grass weeds of cereals in central southern England made in 1981 was repeated in 1982 between 28 June and 23 July. Dicotyledonous weeds were also assessed in 1982. A total of 1021 fields were surveyed, 702 in winter wheat. 198 in winter barley and 121 in spring barley. A total of twenty-four grass weeds were found and their levels of infestation were scored. The most frequently found grass weeds were the same as in 1981. In all cereals combined, these were Elymus (Agropyron) repens in 35% of fields, Avena fatua in 32%, Alopecurus myosuroides in 26% and Poa trivialis in 24%. Sixty-three species of dicotyledonous weeds were recorded and of these, eighteen species occurred in 2% or more of fields. The eight most frequent were Viola arvensis, Galium aparine, Stellaria media, Myosotis arvensis, Polygonum aviculare, Convolvulus arvensis, Bilderdykia (Polygonum) convolvulus and Lamium purpureum. Most species were fairly uniform in distribution, but Galium aparine, Convolvulus arvensis and Cirsium arvense were most frequent in the east while Viola arvensis was least frequent there. The cereals varied in weediness, 32% of winter barley, 23% of spring barley and only 7% of winter wheat fields had no weeds recorded.  相似文献

In recent years, emerging phytoplasma diseases of potato (Solanum tuberosum L.) have increasingly become important in central and eastern Europe. Accurate identification of phytoplasmas and their insect vectors is essential to developing effective management strategies for diseases caused by these plant pathogens. Potato phytoplasma diseases in Europe were for a long time diagnosed only on the basis of visual symptoms. However, this approach is not very reliable and the use of modern molecular techniques such as polymerase chain reaction (PCR) is required in order to accurately determine the etiology of these phytoplasma diseases. A survey and identification of phytoplasmas associated with potato crops in Romania and southern Russia were conducted based on modern molecular techniques. Symptomatic potato plants were collected from several fields and tested for phytoplasmas by PCR. Also, selected crops and weeds in the vicinity of these potato fields were sampled and tested for phytoplasmas. Stolbur (“Candidatus Phytoplasma solani”; 16SrXII-A) was the only phytoplasma detected in potato and adjacent crops, including tomato (Solanum lycopersicum), pepper (Capsicum annuum), eggplant (Solanum melongena), and beet (Beta vulgaris). This phytoplasma was also detected in weeds, particularly Convolvulus arvensis, Cuscuta sp., and Euphorbia falcata. Genotyping of obtained stolbur isolates on tuf genes revealed that they all had the same RFLP profile corresponding to the tuf-type ‘b’ (VK Type II). Stolbur-affected potato plants produced a large number of spongy tubers that resulted in commercially unacceptable potato chips upon processing.  相似文献

Convolvulus arvensis is the most important species of bindweed in Britain. Established plants spread by means of lateral roots: establishment from seed and fragments of the underground growth is not important. The hormone weedkillers like 2,4-D and MCPA give good control in the year of treatment. With the correct dose and timing there is also good control in the year after treatment. Adding paraquat to 2,4-D reduces the effect in the year after treatment. Repeated annual treatment with high doses of chlorthiamid that prevent shoot growth for the entire season are no more effective against the underground growth than the standard dose of 2,4-D. Calystegia sepium spreads rapidly by rhizomes and stolons. It is more susceptible than C. arvensis to MCPB.  相似文献

A survey of common and uncommon weed species usually showing Verticillium wilt symptoms was carried out during 1992–2000 in Crete, Greece.Verticillium dahliae was isolated in 48 out of 182 sampled fields, in which several weed species were grown, from several locations in Oropedio, Lasithi. Altogether, 124 isolates ofV. dahliae were recovered from the vascular stem-tissue of 19 weed species, belonging to ten botanical families. Pathogenicity trials with 13 out of 19 weed species that have never been reported as hosts of the fungus, using for inoculation isolates which originated from the same weed species, resulted in infection of all of them, showing various disease symptoms. Seven weed species (Anthemis melanolepis, Cardaria draba, Convolvulus arvensis, Erodium sp.,Euphorbia helioscopia, Helminthotheca echioides andSinapis alba) are new hosts worldwide, and six additional species (Euphorbia sp.,Lactuca serriola, Raphanus raphanistrum, Sinapis arvensis, Sonchus oleraceus andTrifolium sp.) are new hosts for Greece. The most susceptible (isolation frequency: 27.9–52.8%, moderate disease severity) species were:Capsella bursa-pastoris, C. draba, Chenopodium album, Senecio vulgaris andSolanum nigrum. Less susceptible (isolation frequency: 4.8–17.8%, slight disease severity) were:Amaranthus sp.,A. melanolepis, C. arvensis, Erodium sp.,Euphorbia sp.,E. helioscopia, H. echioides, L. serriola, Malva sylvestris, R. raphanistrum, S. alba, S. arvensis, S. oleraceus andTrifolium sp. Some species —C. draba, C. album, L. serriola andS. nigrum L. — that usually showed external and vascular wilt symptoms, occasionally exhibited only reduced growth. Visible symptoms under natural field conditions in all 13 weed species that had never been reported as hosts ofV. dahliae were similar to those observed after their artificial inoculation. The fungus was not isolated fromFoeniculum vulgare ssp.piperitum, Oxalis corniculata andStellaria media, among other species. http://www.phytoparasitica.org posting Sept. 18, 2002.  相似文献

A weed survey methodology was used for 2 years in three provinces in Greece to determine the abundance and spatial distribution of weeds in cotton (Gossypium hirsutum L.) fields. Based on a stratified random sampling procedure, the most frequently occurring weeds were counted in 150 cotton fields. The field surveys were conducted late in the growing season; hence, the weed populations consisted of species that had been present during the critical competitive period for the crop and may have contributed to yield losses.Solanum nigrum was the most abundant weed in the surveyed fields of the southern province, followed byCyperus rotundus, Convolvulus arvensis, Xanthium strumarium, Chrozophora tinctoria andCynodon dactylon, in descending order. The ranked weed flora in the fields of the northern province was differentiated, suggesting the geographical distribution of weed species. The weedsDatura stramonium andS. nigrum were recorded in high abundance and followed byAmaranthus spp.,Abutilon theophrasti, Portulaca oleracea, Chenopodium album andXanthium spinosum, in descending order. Although the use of preplant incorporated herbicides is the dominant practice in cotton cultivation, certain weeds continue to spread in increasing densities. http://www.phytoparasitica.org posting July 26, 2005.  相似文献

Yellows-diseased plants of Crepis setosa (hawksbeard), Knautia arvensis (field scabious), Convolvulus arvensis (field bindweed), Picris echioides (bristly oxtongue), Echium vulgare (blueweed) and Calendula officinalis (pot marigold) collected in central and southern Italy were examined for phytoplasma infection by means of polymerase chain reaction (PCR) technology using universal phytoplasma primers directed to ribosomal sequences. The detected phytoplasmas were characterized and differentiated using restriction fragment length polymorphism analysis of PCR-amplified DNA. The phytoplasma detected in diseased pot marigold plants was identified as a member of the aster yellows group and proved indistinguishable from a strain of the American aster yellows phytoplasma. The phytoplasma identified in diseased field bindweed plants is a putative new type of the stolbur group that differed from the typical stolbur phytoplasma. Phytoplasmas detected in diseased hawksbeard, blueweed and field scabious plants are all putative new members of the sugarcane white leaf group while the phytoplasma detected in diseased bristly oxtongue plants represents a new member of the faba bean phyllody group. For hawksbeard and field scabious this is the first report on the occurrence of phytoplasma diseases, whereas phytoplasmas infecting bristly oxtongue and blueweed have never been characterized before.  相似文献

In 962 field trials in different crops, the size of a number of weed species was investigated. The weeds were ranked according to their size on a single occasion. The ranks of the species were examined relative to two weed species, Viola arvensis and Matricaria inodora. The ranking was, however, independent of which of the two species were used as standard. The correlation between the rankings with Viola arvensis as standard, and the rankings with Matricaria inodora as standard were r= 0-93 for spring sown crops, and r= 0.84 for autumn sown crops. Sinapis arvensis was the largest weed species in spring sown crops, with a weight of 14.5 times that of Viola arvensis, followed by Brassica napus, Galeopsis spp., Thlaspi arvense and Amsinckia spp. Viola arvensis. Veronica spp. and Lamium spp. were the smallest weed species in spring sown crops. Galium aparine was the largest species in autumn sown crops, whereas spring germinating species such as Polygonum spp. were among the smallest. The ranks of Viola arvensis, Myosotis arvensis, Lapsana communis, Matricaria inodora and Lamium spp. were almost identical in spring sown crops and in autumn sown crops.  相似文献

Two experiments were carried out, one in 1995 and one in 1997, to investigate the competitive abilities of two spring wheat cultivars with Sinapis arvensis L. The spring wheat cultivars (Baldus and Canon) of contrasting growth habit were grown with and without S. arvensis under two different moisture regimes (10% and 70% of field capacity). In 1995, S. arvensis was found to be less competitive when subjected to moisture stress, resulting in smaller wheat yield losses in dry soil than in moist soil. In both years, seed production of S. arvensis was reduced by competition and moisture stress, and the seeds produced by plants that had been grown in drier soil were small and had negligible dormancy. Hence, in dry conditions, the competitiveness of S. arvensis and its potential to produce persistent seed may be reduced. Some differences between the two wheat cultivars were evident: cv. Baldus was more competitive against S. arvensis than cv. Canon. This could be attributed to differences in canopy structure.  相似文献

This experiment was conducted in order to determine if Persian clover ( Trifolium resupinatum ) and Berseem clover ( Trifolium alexandrium ) contained water-soluble and methanol-soluble constituents that could affect the seedling growth of four test species; namely, Amaranthus retroflexus , Convolvulus arvensis (field bindweed), Secale cereale , and Sinapis arvensis (wild mustard) . The above-ground tissues of the Persian and Berseem clover plants were collected during the vegetative growth stage and oven-dried. Three concentrations of aqueous and methanolic extracts were used at full-strength (33.3 g L−1), half-strength (16.7 g L−1), and quarter-strength (8.3 g L−1). Distilled water was used as the control. The weed seeds were placed in Petri dishes containing the legume extract or distilled water (control). The seedling growth of the weed species declined with the increasing concentration of the clover extracts. Wild mustard exhibited the highest sensitivity to both the legume extracts. Compared to the aqueous extract, the methanolic extract caused a greater decline in the seedling growth of the weeds. Berseem clover was the stronger inhibitor of the weed seedling growth, as compared to Persian clover. Therefore, the amounts of allelochemicals present might differ in these two clover species. Field bindweed showed the least sensitivity to both the legume extracts. Field bindweed showed more tolerance to the allelochemicals produced by the clover species.  相似文献

Cotton is still one of the most important crops in Greece despite the changes in the country’s socioeconomic status which have reduced the total cultivated area. In order to minimize yield losses, weed control is essential during the cultivation period. The aim of this study was to determine the distribution of the prevalent weeds that escape the usual herbicide application in the main cotton zone, located in the Karditsa prefecture. The weed densities and the irrigation methods used were recorded in 101 sampling sites of 25 m2; the cotton crop had been grown for the last 5 years using similar weed control techniques. Existing soil maps of the area were also used, through which soil data (texture and carbonates content) were accessed. Among the 14 weed species that have been recorded, four were perennial (Cyperus rotundus, Convolvulus arvensis, Cynodon dactylon, Sorhum halepense) and were ranked as first, second, fourth and fifth, respectively, according to the mean density, indicating the inefficient herbicidal control. In the fields irrigated by sprinklers, the weeds occurred in greater populations than those that occurred in fields irrigated by drippers, at values of 4.64 and 3 weeds m-2, respectively. In terms of the studied soil properties, the distribution of C. arvensis was significantly correlated with carbonate content and soil texture in the surface soil layer. The autocorrelation analysis showed that only perennial weeds are spatially correlated whereas the interpolated maps showed this spatial trend of weed appearance.  相似文献

A real-time PCR assay was designed to quantify seed-borne infection of Pyrenophora graminea in barley (Hordeum vulgare). Conventional tests such as the freezing blotter method cannot distinguish P. graminea from the closely related P. teres. The seed infection threshold for P. graminea is lower than the one for P. teres and is therefore applied for both species although P. graminea may be absent. This results in unnecessary rejections of seed lots. PCR primers and a TaqMan probe were designed to target a P. graminea-specific DNA sequence. The potential of the real-time PCR assay for quantifying seed-borne infection of P. graminea was investigated by examining seed lots harvested from P. graminea-infected fields. The major part (84%) of the variation in the amount of P. graminea DNA measured by real-time PCR could be attributed to variation between seed lots while only about 8% was due to variation within seed lots. DNA quantities of P. graminea were positively correlated with seed infection incidence detected by the freezing blotter method as well as with the infection incidence of plants examined in the greenhouse. Both correlations were highly significant (P < 0.001) but the DNA quantities accounted only for 59% (R 2 = 0.59) and 56% (R 2 = 0.56), respectively, of the variation in the results obtained by the two conventional methods. Seed lots of varieties resistant to P. graminea contained considerable amounts of P. graminea DNA but showed no or only few leaf symptoms in the greenhouse test suggesting that the recommended seed infection thresholds could be raised for resistant varieties.  相似文献

Factors involved in the establishment of Taraxacum officinale (dandelion) seedlings in grasslands and plant mortality in the first growing season were studied during 2008–2011. The study was conducted at 11 grassland sites that differed in the quantity of seed rain and the intensity of seedling predation by slugs. In April, of each study year, 10 plots open to the sedimentation of naturally dispersed seeds were established at each site, five plots of which were also sown with 250 T. officinale seeds each. The amount of natural seed rain, slug feeding activity and number of plants in each plot were then recorded at monthly intervals. Seed rain and seedling predation accounted for c. 50% of the variation in seedling establishment. Populations of established seedlings then declined through October, at which point they were at 25% of the original abundance on average. The percentage of plants that survived varied among sites and years. The temporal and spatial variation in T. officinale establishment and survival of young plants was enormous, even within a small area. Predation of seedlings by slugs can effectively prevent the establishment of T. officinale in grassland. This only occurred, however, at slug abundances not acceptable under conditions of public access.  相似文献

Weed seeds present an agronomic threat, but are also an important food resource for wildlife in winter. Weed seed densities on the soil surface in winter were examined from 1999 to 2002 in 105 fields on three different farms in UK. The effect of the preceding crop, cultivation, position within the field and the application of seed for birds (bird seed) on surface seed abundance and species composition was tested. Six or fewer species comprised c. 80% of the weed seeds. By January of each study year, the densities of seeds important for farmland birds (key seeds) were 73% or 87% lower compared with early winter on two of the farms, but were stable on the third where seeds were incorporated through cultivation. At the edge and mid‐field, seed densities only exceeded 400 m?2 in 17%, 10% and 12% of fields for total, key and dicotyledonous seeds respectively. The preceding crop only affected seed densities at one site; stubbles of winter barley had fewer seeds compared with winter wheat or spring barley. Seed densities varied between the edge and mid‐field, but trends were inconsistent between sites. The density of the larger seeds (Atriplex patula, Viola arvensis, Polygonum aviculare and Chenopodium album) were reduced in fields receiving bird seed. The objectives of weed control and conservation may not be mutually exclusive because seed return was most reduced where the ground remained uncultivated through the winter, yet this also provided the best foraging opportunities for surface feeding seed predators.  相似文献

The pattern and extent of 14C-glyphosate [N-(phosphonomethyl)glycine] translocation from the treated leaf and metabolism of 14C-glyphosate were studied in field bindweed (Convolvulus arvensis L.), hedge bindweed (Convolvulus sepium L.). Canada thistle [Cirsium arvense (L.) Scop.] tall morning glory [lpomoea purpurea (L.) Roth.] and wild buckwheat (Polygonum convolvulus L.). 14C was translocated throughout the plants within 3 days with accumulation in the meristematic tips of the roots and shoots evident. Cross and longitudinal sections of stems and roots showed that the 14C was localized in the phloem. Field bindweed translocated 3–5% of the applied 14C from the treated leaf, hedge bindweed 21.6%, Canada thistle 7.8%, tall morningglory 6.5%, and wild buckwheat 5%. Field bindweed, Canada thistle, and tall morningglory metabolized the parent glyphosate to aminomethylphosphonic acid to a limited extent. This metabolite made up less than 15% of the total 14C. Of the total 14C applied to excised leaves, 50% had disappeared within 25 days.  相似文献

Plants from two black nightshade (Solanum spp.) seed sources were compared for differences in morphology at seedling and mature plant stages, flowering and physiological responses to pre-germination seed treatment, growth responses to temperature, and response to herbicides. Differences in the morphology of the two Solanum spp. were evident from seedling to maturity. The plants grown from the Michigan (MI) seed source had a deep purple abaxial leaf surface at the three to four-leaf stage, a yellow anther column, and toothed proximal half in the mature leaf, whereas the plants grown from the California (CA) seed source had no unusual abaxial coloration or toothed proximal margin and had a dark brown anther column. Differences in response to herbicides were seen between plants grown from the two seed sources following pre-plant-incorporated, pre-emergence, and post-emergence herbicide applications. The plants from the MI seed source were up to five times more susceptible to chloramben, applied pre-plant-incorporated at 1.68 kg ha?1, and to ethalfluralin, applied preemergence at 1.12 kg ha?1, than plants from the CA seed source. Plants from both seed sources have been described as Solanum nigrum L. The plants from MI have been identified elsewhere as Solanum ptycanthum Dun. and those from CA as Solanum scabrum Mill. This identification could resolve conflicting reports among researchers regarding chemical control measures.  相似文献

The bindweeds Calystegia sepium and Convolvulus arvensis aredifficult to control chemically. Calystegia sepium is often aproblem in maize or in vineyards, while C. arvensis is animportant weed of cereals. The biological control of these weedswith insects or fungal pathogens has been investigated since1970. More than 600 fungi collected in countries throughoutEurope have been isolated in our laboratories. The isolates withthe highest and most stable pathogenicity against bindweed belongto the genus Stagonospora. In a field trial in maize in 1995, oneof these Stagonospora isolates stopped the increase of groundcoverage by the bindweeds. In response to public concern aboutenvironmental problems caused by modern agriculture, new croppingsystems are being developed. Underseeding maize with a livinggreen cover achieves good control of a large spectrum of the weedflora typical of conventional tillage systems. However, C. sepiumand C. arvensis remain as problems. The research reported showsthat C. sepium is partly suppressed by the green cover, butescapes control by climbing the stems of the maize plants. Therefore, the application of spores of Stagonospora sp. in amaize field underseeded with a living green cover may allow alarge or a complete reduction of the herbicide input and promotea more sustainable agriculture  相似文献

Endozoochory is known as an important mechanism for the spread of weeds. We carried out experiments to assess the fate of seeds of several weed species (Convolvulus arvensis, Cuscuta campestris, Rumex crispus, Hordeum spontaneum and Sorghum halepense) after passing through the gut of sheep and goat. Eighteen animals of both sheep and goat received diet mixed with seeds of the weed species or control with only wheat bran (five weed species + control × three replications). Results showed that a higher proportion of seeds were missing after passage through the sheep gut than in goats. In goats, a greater proportion of seeds were dead after passage, but the number of seeds collected from dung was also greater. Weed species differed, with the highest seed recovery and viability in Cuscuta campestris. Based on time of seed passages through the animal gut estimated for the different weed species, we recommend that sheep should be kept in a corral for 96 hr to minimise seed transportation via their faeces. For goats, if R. crispus and C. arvensis seeds could be excluded from the diet, then maintaining them for 96 hr in an animal stall would ensure little seed transportation via dung, but we found R. crispus and C. arvensis seeds to be present and viable in goat dung even 120 hr after feeding. Very large numbers of viable seeds can be found in goat and sheep dung, so the use of rotted manure is highly recommended to avoid transportation of viable seeds via manure fertilisers.  相似文献
