Abstract –  Commercial catches of longfin and shortfin eels ( Anguilla dieffenbachii and A. australis ) were sampled from southern New Zealand in the mid-1990s to determine the status of the eel population. We compared this with historical information on eel populations to highlight changes in the status, and then investigated the likely causes of these changes. A total of 20,722 longfins and 2366 shortfins were sampled from 216 landings. Longfins dominated catches comprising 53–100% (mean = 90%) of eel numbers. Shortfins were predominantly, but not exclusively, coastal in their distribution, whereas longfins were widely distributed through all reaches sampled. Mean size of shortfin was invariably larger than longfin and for both species generally increased with distance inland, particularly for longfin in the longest rivers. There was no clear geographical separation of longfin sexes although females were more common further inland in the longer rivers. Longfin sex ratio was about 4:1 (male:female), whereas in shortfin it was nearly 100% female. There have been marked changes in the status of the eel population in southern New Zealand over the last 60 years. We suggest that commercial fishing has resulted in a reduction in the size of both species, and for longfins a skewing of the sex ratio toward males – fishing may have favoured differentiation into males as well as the removal of the longer-lived longfin females. Skewed sex ratio and small size of longfins compared with those of shortfin suggest that this species has been more affected by fishing pressure than shortfins, possibly allowing shortfins to expand their range further inland.  相似文献

The effects of otter guards on the fishing efficiency of eel fyke-nets were investigated in two Danish rivers. The otter guards were made of 75-mm mesh netting and were placed across the fyke entrance. The fishing efficiency was measured as catch-per-unit effort and hauling time. Guard nets were mounted in half the fyke-nets, while the other half served as controls. After every haul, the fyke-nets with guard nets were returned to controls and vice versa . For legal-sized eels and salmonids, the guard-net significantly ( P < 0.05) reduced the catches, causing a 30% reduction of the eel catch and a 53–55% reduction of the salmonid catch. The use of otter guards significantly increased the hauling time. The average time used for hauling a guarded fyke-net was increased by 15–25% for both upstream- and downstream-oriented fyke-nets, respectively. Abstract. The performance of fyke netting was compared with that of electrofishing in an artificially stocked closed pond and in open waters with natural populations in the Thames catchment, England. Seine netting, trapping and fyke nets of different mesh size were also compared using wild populations. Studies of mark-recapture and catch-depletion techniques for estimating population sizes and structures were included. It was concluded that no single technique was ideal because of the difficulties inherent in adequately sampling eels in all aquatic environments. Recommendations are made and the implications of fyke net efficiency for commercial fishing are discussed.  相似文献

Abstract. The occurrence and abundance of eels were investigated in five lowland reservoirs in south-eastern Sri Lanka. Paired fyke nets and longlines were used for sampling eels. Two tropical species of eel. Anguilla bicolor McClelland and Anguilla nebulosa McClelland, were caught. In two of the five reservoirs investigated only A. bicolor was found and in another two reservoirs both species were caught. Eels seemed to be absent from one reservoir. The CPUE in reservoirs with eel was between 0·13 and 2·60 eels of both species per fyke net and night, and the total weight was between 81 and 814g. A small capture-recapture experiment in Badagiriya, where eels seemed to be most plenliful, gave a population estimate of only six eels or 1·2 kg per ha (eels longer than 40cm). Such a low abundance was regarded as unrealistic. Stocks of eel could presumably, at least in some reservoirs, withstand commercial exploitation but more information is needed on recruitment, growth and migration before any advice can be given on the management of stocks.  相似文献

Abstract  Electric fishing depletion systematically underestimates fish abundance in streams. Electric fishing mark-recapture estimates are unbiased, but only when performed over several days to allow marked fish to recover from electric fishing. A mark-recapture procedure that can be performed in 1 day and produces unbiased population estimates is described. It involves minnow trapping, marking and releasing juvenile salmonids in a stop-netted reach, followed by electric fishing the reach 1 h after release of marked fish. Recapture of marked fish during electric fishing can form the basis of a dual-gear mark-recapture population estimate, or an unbiased estimate of electric fishing capture efficiency. The marking technique did not affect short-term catchability of the target species ( P  =   0.823), and provided unbiased estimates of capture efficiency (0.38–0.40) that were similar to those documented by other researchers. However, local validation to confirm equal catchability of marked and unmarked fish, as described in this study, is recommended.  相似文献

A size‐age modelling technique is presented for assessing the vital rates, stock and recruitment of eel populations in semi‐closed lagoons with fully monitored migration of silver eels. Data for yellow and silver European eels (Anguilla anguilla L.) were obtained in 2011 from the Comacchio lagoon (Italy). The analysis was performed in three steps: (i) correction of yellow eel data, which are affected by the fyke nets selectivity during samplings, (ii) estimation of survival curve, stock, recruitment and metamorphosis rates of the population (calibration using data from 2011) and (iii) validation of the model using the observed amount of silver eel migrating population of the next year. A bootstrap procedure was used to assess the level of uncertainty for each parameter using the 95% intervals of the highest posterior density distribution HPDD (Bayesian approach). The measured abundance of silver eels was 0.56 ind·ha?1, while the yellow eel abundance and recruitment were estimated by the model for 2011 at 8.77 ind·ha?1 and 5.99 ind. ha?1 respectively. The model performance during validation was satisfactory as the observed total mass of migrating population of 2012 (3777 kg) was inside the 95% HPDD intervals (3197–3839 kg) of model's predictions. The estimated stocks and recruitment were at least ten times lower from the respective estimations of previous studies of 1989 highlighting the crucial conditions of the population. The proposed modelling approach can provide significant information about eel population conditions, facilitating the evaluation of a range of management options in the context of eel conservation plans.  相似文献

Abstract – For decades, the European eel Anguilla anguilla (L.) population has been declining strongly despite several management attempts, so additional experiments need to be conducted on management measures. The use of freshwater protected areas has been advocated but their efficiency has never been assessed. In this study, we investigated whether the population structure and the silver eel (mature migrating stage) production differ in fished and protected areas within a marsh wetland (Brière, 7000 ha, Northwest France), using an intensive biological study (electrofishing and trapping) and a survey of the traditional fishery (licenses, questionnaires and creel surveys). First, we found that fishermen mainly targeted >320‐mm yellow eels (sedentary stage) using pots and square dipping nets and that harvest by fishermen was highly variable at different locations in the study area. Secondly, we found differences in the size‐class structures and mortality rates between protected and fished areas. Mortality rates of eels >320 mm was positively correlated with harvest by fishermen. Furthermore, the proportion of potentially migrating eels in the total population was found to be higher in the protected areas than in fished areas (6.38% vs. 1.42%, respectively). Thirdly, we found that protected areas potentially produce 8.4% of the total silver eel production whereas they only account for 2.4% of the aquatic habitat area. We estimated that a size adjustment of protected areas to 31.1% with maintaining the current fishery would produce 50% of the potential silver eel of a fully protected marsh. Protection of freshwater areas appears to be a promising management measure and a constructive consensual way to integrate the patrimonial and societal value of the traditional fishery and the international management plans for European eels. Furthermore, freshwater protective measures can be an effective local solution if they are integrated into the framework of freshwater biodiversity management and accompanied by other management measures that focus on all eel life stages.  相似文献

Abstract – The diel activity of three size groups (small=<100 mm; medium=100–199 mm; large=200–299 mm total length) of juvenile shortfinned ("shortfin") eels ( Anguilla australis ) and longfinned ("longfin") eels ( A. dieffenbachii ) was tested in a laboratory flow tank over a 48-h period during summer. All size groups of both species were nocturnally active, with the eels hiding in the substratum during the day and coming out on top of the cobbles from dusk to dawn, to feed. During the foraging period, the numbers and activity of all sizes of longfins visible were greater than those seen of shortfins, with the differences being more pronounced for small and medium eels. The activity of all eels consisted mostly of foraging by crawling, searching and probing for prey among the cobbles. Rate of activity increased with size of eel for both species. Small eels of either species did more swimming than eels of the larger sizes, whereas large eels were observed more frequently with only their head out of the substrate than were the smaller individuals. Feeding of small eels within the interstitial spaces of the streambed may explain their significantly lower activity on top of the substrate at night. The significantly lower rate of activity recorded for shortfins than longfins of all sizes may be due partly to their ability to feed within the interstices of the stream bed, and (or) longer time to recover from handling and habituate to the test environment. Abstract  Selective opening of the Patea hydroelectric dam spillway gates was examined for its potential to provide safe downstream passage for sexually mature (silver) eels in New Zealand. During autumn 2000, one of the spillway gates at the 82-m high Patea Dam was opened for 2.5 h and a large fyke net set across the river about 1.5 km below the dam. Fifty one live endemic longfin eels Anguilla dieffenbachii (Gray), 60 live shortfin eels Anguilla australis (Richardson), and eight dead shortfin eels were captured. All but three of the eels caught were downstream migrants, and aside from the dead eel, only a small portion (5%) had external signs of injury. It was likely that the majority of the eels captured passed over the spillway, but some may have originated from the section of river between the dam and the net or gone through the turbines. To further test the ability of eels to survive passage over the spillway, three controlled spills were made in autumn 2001 and 102 eels released immediately upstream of the partially opened spillway gates. A net stretched across the base of the concrete spillway was used to recover the eels. Most of the eels recovered from the spillway had low levels of injury. However, during the third controlled spill, 10 wild migrant eels were also caught with none showing any external signs of injury. This indicated that the damage noted on the recovered eels were the result of handling rather than passage over the spillway. It was concluded that selective opening of hydroelectric dam spillway gates can provide safe downstream passage for migrant eels.  相似文献

Abstract. Female yellow eels, Anguilla anguilla L., were caught with fyke nets in the brackish water bight Hallangspollen, Norway during 1983 and 1984. Fishing was performed continuously for a variable number of days (defined as the fishing period), and the nets were monitored at uneven intervals during the fishing period. The eel activity, expressed as catch per unit effort (CPUE), was positively correlated (R2= 0·74; P < 0·001) with water temperature (defined as a regression of temperature variation during the fishing period). The multiple regression model of CPUE on water temperature was improved by including the number of fishing days in each fishing period in the regression model (R2= 0·91; P < 0·001). With high fishing efforts the predicted CPUE decreased below that which was predicted by the temperature model alone.  相似文献

Some problems of eel fishing in hypersaline coastal lagoons are examined by an analysis of eel catches in Porto Pino, three connected basins of about 441 ha in southern Sardinia, where the average catch of eels, about 19 Kg/ha/year, is roughly half the total catch and over 65% of the gross economic return from these ponds.The parameters of the eel population dynamics and the exploitation rate were estimated from the number and weight of eels in each of three trade-weight categories, into which the catch is divided each day as requested by the market, and from examination of random samples, from each stratum, for age and sex. In the particular case of Porto Pino ponds, the estimated yield of 12 g per recruit seems to indicate that the stock of eels is under-fished.The catch is not proportional to the intensity of effort, but depends on environmental conditions, such as lunar phase and presence of wind and/or bad weather conditions. The catch could be increased by using a larger number of winged fyke nets, but should not be sought by extending the fishing period, because that might harm the juveniles of other commercially exploitable species. It is suggested that yield optimisation could be achieved by concentrating the maximum effort in the period of silver eel migration (October–February). In the Mediterranean area, these months are characterized both by suitable environmental conditions and by a peak in the demand for the product.  相似文献

Within recent years, a slight but significant increase of European eel Anguilla anguilla (L.) recruitment has been documented, but it remains questionable whether or not the increased recruitment levels resulted in higher eel numbers at the regional scale. To detect the changes in yellow eel numbers, logbook data covering a 15-year time series of catch per unit effort (CPUE) data from the German Baltic Sea were analysed. Monthly mean catch rates were calculated for two different size classes for two passive gears: fyke and stationary trap nets. Change-point analysis was applied to discover changes in the catch data. After a period of decreasing or constant catch rates, the fyke net data indicated that yellow eel numbers increased slightly in recent years in the Baltic Sea. Besides increasing numbers of immigrating juvenile eels, other population dynamics or conservation efforts might have added to the observed positive stock trend.  相似文献

Three lakes were repeatedly sampled at night using boat electric fishing, experimental gill netting, and fyke netting from May to November 1993 to evaluate the feasibility of using proportional stock density (PSD) to monitor warm-water fish populations in Washington State, USA. Additionally, average night-time boat electric fishing catch-per-effort of largemouth bass, Micropterus salmoides (Lacepéde), from 30 Washington lakes was also analysed to determine the amount of effort required to obtain adequate samples for precise PSD estimates. Temporal variations in PSD were not large enough to affect the management of warm-water fish populations in the small Washington lakes studied. However, the considerable effort required to obtain precise PSD estimates may limit its usefulness for warm-water fisheries surveys in the Pacific Northwest. On average, from three to 13 nights of electric fishing effort are needed to capture enough stock-length largemouth bass for PSD estimates, depending on the precision desired (80–95%) and the location of the lake (eastern or western Washington). Catch of stock-length fish can be maximized by using electric fishing for centrarchids and gill netting for yellow perch, Perca flavescens (Mitchill), in June or September. Adequate samples for precise PSD estimates can be difficult to obtain from Pacific Northwestern lakes, even when using recommended gear at optimum sampling times. Inability to capture an adequate sample size for precise PSD estimates may be responsible for some of the fluctuation in PSDs in some studies of warm-water fish populations in northern areas. Managers in other northern climates may find that low sample size may account for large variations in PSDs reported.  相似文献

Fisheries activity in the Thau marine lagoon (Mediterranean coast of France) has an old tradition and involves different types of gears (set nets, traps and lines) that are used seasonally with varying frequencies in different areas. A survey of fishing activity, main fishing methods and main commercial species composition in the lagoon was carried out to assess the current fishing effort and seasonal yield. Many important changes in fishing effort and in the most important target species occurred during the last 10 years. A gradual decline in eel, Anguilla anguilla (L.), catches followed by an increase of other commercially-exploited species, particularly the gilthead sea-bream, Sparus aurata L., was observed.  相似文献

Abstract –  Modelling-governing patterns of European eel ( Anguilla anguilla L.) distribution of four eel size classes (<150, 150–300, 300–450 and >450 mm) in the Frémur basin (northwest France) was done using artificial neural network (ANN) techniques and ecological profiles. Our results demonstrate the high predictive power of the ANN models. Some macro- and microscale factors, such as distance from the sea, depth and flow velocity, have the most significant influence on the models. Influence of distance from the sea appears to be very different from the spatial organisation usually described in river systems. In fact, the general tendencies of total eel densities according to the distance from the sea showed that densities increase weakly upstream. Another outcome was the variations in habitat preference according to the eel size, even if this species is spread over practically every type of microhabitat. Small eels were mainly found in shallow habitats with strong abundance of aquatic vegetation, whereas large eels tend to be found in intermediate to high depth with small to intermediate abundance of aquatic vegetation. Finally, we hypothesise that European eels change behaviour and microhabitat characteristic preference around a size of 300 mm.  相似文献

Abstract Standardised fishing methods using gillnets (EN 14575), electric fishing (EN 14011) and hydroacoustics (WI 00230244 CEN enquiry) to estimate species composition, abundance, biomass and size distribution were compared in 14 alpine lakes >50 ha. More fish species were detected using benthic gillnets (mean = 72.7%) than electric fishing (mean = 59.5%) and pelagic gillnets (mean = 29.6%). For all but two lakes, additional information from a local fisheries manager was required to obtain a complete list of species. Biomass data generated by standardised gillnetting and hydroacoustic surveys were not fully comparable, but a positive correlation was found. Gill netting and hydroacoustics both indicated a nearly fishless habitat below 75 m, which confirmed the maximum required fishing depth according to the European Standard EN 14757. Size distributions obtained from gillnet and hydroacoustic surveys differed statistically for large fish (>40 cm). Each standardised method reflected typical shortcomings. The European standard (EN 14757) should be amended for pelagic fish habitat in deep alpine lakes to include sampling effort corresponding to water volume, and additional gillnets with larger mesh sizes (e.g. 70 mm). Furthermore, the electric fishing standard (EN 14011) should be extended to incorporate requirements of lake fish sampling.  相似文献

Abstract  The total number and condition of fish extracted via high and low flow irrigation pumps was assessed over a 2-year period in the Namoi River, Australia. A combination of boat electric fishing and fyke netting was used for 10 weeks during the peak irrigation period to determine species and size classes susceptible to entrainment during water abstraction. Over 2300 fish passed through the pump outlets over the study period, with many individuals (7.5% of total) both killed and injured. The maximum number of fish entrained in a single day was 232. Mortality was significantly higher from the high volume pump site, but only large (>200 mm long) or small (<50 mm long) fish were killed. Medium-sized fish (50–200 mm long) largely survived the abstraction process; although 70 were injured (3% of total), only one was killed (0.07%). The Electric fishing surveys showed that only four species were present in storage dams, suggesting that survival through the pump systems may be size and species specific. Fish that survived the water abstraction process had no opportunities to return to the main river system and were effectively classified as lost from the main river population. The development of suitable mitigation measures, including operational changes and screening, are suggested as mechanisms to prevent extraction and minimise any adverse impacts arising from irrigation development.  相似文献
