Forty-eight Blackbelly X Dorset, 27 Finnish, 26 Finnish X Dorset, 28 Rambouillet and 8 Dorset Suffolk-sired lambs were used in this experiment. Three weeks before lambing, one-half of the ewes received a selenium emulsion (Se-E) containing .05 mg selenium and 3.7 IU of vitamin E/kg body weight (BW). A 2 X 3 X 2 factorial arrangement was used; lambs from either treated or nontreated ewes were randomly assigned irrespective of breed to one of six treatment combinations consisting of 0 or .025 mg/kg BW selenium (Se) injected at birth or two .025 mg/kg BW Se injections, one at birth and one 2 to 3 wk later, and two levels of injectable Vitamin E (E; 0 and 100 IU) given at birth. Both lambs and ewes were provided access to 75% concentrate diets supplemented with Se and E at recommended NRC levels. Plasma activity of creatine phosphokinase (CPK) was highest at 1 d of age and exhibited decreases (P less than .001) over time. In lambs, the E injection tended to decrease plasma activity of CPK. Plasma glutathione peroxidase activity was lowest at 1 d of age and increased over the course of the experiment but was unaffected by treatments (P less than .05). Plasma tocopherol concentration decreased (P less than .01) with time, with E therapy tending to increase tocopherol concentration. Differences in mean plasma tocopherol concentrations among breeds were also observed (P less than .01). Selenium concentration increased over time and with the E injection (P less than .01). An interaction between ewe and lamb Se-E treatments also was observed (P less than .10), with nontreated lambs from nontreated ewes exhibiting lower Se concentrations than treated lambs from injected ewes. An increase in lamb plasma Se concentration was noted in response to Se-E treatments (P less than .001). In the ewes, plasma tocopherol concentration was lower while Se concentration was higher at 18 d than at 1 d postpartum (P less than .01 and P less than .001, respectively). Milk Se concentration was lower at 18 d than at 1 d (P less than .001) and was higher (P less than .10) in Se-E-treated ewes.  相似文献

Two winter feeding trials (1985-86; 1986-87) were conducted to evaluate the productivity of gestating ewes fed lasalocid (L) and two supplement levels while grazing Montana winter range. Five hundred range ewes were randomized within age and breed each year and allotted to .15 or .23 kg hd-1.d-1 of a 20% CP supplement and either no L or L at 70 mg hd-1.d-1. Feed treatments began on 18 Dec. approximately 100 d before the first expected lambing date and continued for 84 d. Ewes fed .23 kg of supplement per day gained more (P less than .01) total weight (4.9 vs 4.0 kg) during the 84-d experiment and had higher (P less than .05) grease fleece weights (4.2 vs 4.0 kg) than those fed .15 kg of supplement. Lasalocid had no effect (P greater than .05) on ewe weight change or grease fleece weights. Supplement level had no effect (P greater than .05) on reproduction, lamb mortality and lamb performance. Ewes fed L had a greater (P less than .05) percentage of lambs born per ewe than those not fed L (120.7 vs 112.1%); lamb performance was similar (P greater than .05) between treatments. However, because a greater percentage of lambs were born per ewe starting the experiment, ewes fed L produced more (P less than .05) kilograms of weaned lamb than those not fed L (25.9 vs 23.4 kg). In conclusion, ewes fed L and grazing winter range weaned more kg of lamb than did controls because of an improved lambing percentage.(ABSTRACT TRUNCATED AT 250 WORDS)  相似文献

An 8-wk growth trial was conducted to assess the effects of continuous infusion of thyrotropin-releasing hormone (TRH) and an active TRH analog less than Aad-His-Pro-NH2 (the less than Aad is L-pyro-alpha-aminoadipic acid) on growth trial performance, carcass composition and hormone profiles of growing lambs. Both drugs were infused at 600 micrograms X lamb -1 X d -1 with 16 lambs/treatment. Both TRH and less than Aad-His-Pro-NH2 decreased average daily gain (ADG; P less than .01) and increased feed conversion (FC; P less than .01) compared with saline infused controls. Average daily feed intake was not altered. Carcasses of lambs given TRH or less than Aad-His-Pro-NH2 contained fewer kilograms of moisture (P less than .05) and appeared to contain fewer kilograms of protein. Thyrotropin-releasing hormone and less than Aad-His-Pro-NH2 increased thyroid gland weights (P less than .05), but pituitary gland weights were not different. Plasma thyrotropin (TSH) concentrations were increased by both drugs compared with control lambs, peaking at 4 to 7 d after initiating infusion. However, by 14 d, TSH concentrations returned to control levels. Triiodothyronine (T3) and thyroxine (T4) were elevated by both drugs over the entire 8-wk trial, with peak levels reached at 10 d and maintained for the duration of the study. Both TRH and less than Aad-His-Pro-NH2 increased prolactin over the entire period. Growth hormone levels were not altered by either drug. The effects of less than Aad-His-Pro-NH2 infusion on growth trial performance, carcass composition and hormone profiles of growing lambs were very similar to TRH. The negative effects of TRH and less than Aad-His-Pro-NH2 infusion on ADG, FC and carcass protein appear to be the result of elevated T3 and T4 levels.  相似文献

Thirty-eight pregnant Suffolk ewes were assigned randomly to a control group or implanted with approximately 2 g of testosterone propionate (TP) when they were between d 40 and 60 of gestation. Implants were removed 3 wk prior to lambing. Five ewe lambs born to implanted ewes and ten ewe lambs born to nonimplanted ewes were utilized in this experiment. Ram lambs were not used in this trial. No differences (P greater than .10) were observed for fecal, urinary and total N excretion and amount of N absorbed. Nitrogen retained (percentage of N intake and g/d) was higher (P less than .05) in prenatally androgenized ewe lambs than in control ewe lambs. Plasma insulin concentrations averaged 99% higher (P less than .05) in prenatally androgenized ewe lambs. Plasma insulin-like growth factor I (IGF-I) concentrations averaged 29% higher (P less than .06) in ewe lambs treated prenatally with testosterone. Nonesterified fatty acid (NEFA) concentrations averaged 41% higher (P less than .05) in prenatally androgenized ewe lambs. Significant (P less than .05) treatment x time effects were observed in plasma thyroxine, glucose and urea N concentrations of prenatally androgenized vs control ewe lambs. These significant modifications in the plasma metabolite and endocrine status could be an important element of the physiological mechanism(s) by which prenatal androgenization improves growth performance and leanness of ewe lambs.  相似文献

The objective of this study was to compare reproductive efficiency and wool production of 1/4 Finn crossbred ewes with straightbred Columbia, Rambouillet and Targhee ewes. In Phase I, white-faces ewes (WF; Columbia, Rambouillet and Targhee) were bred to either rams of their own breed or Finnish Landrace X Rambouillet rams (F X R) to produce 821 lambs from 563 lambings. Ewes bred to F X R had similar average litter size and individual lamb weights at birth, 60 d and weaning as those bred to WF. Lambs sired by F X R had 7% higher (P less than .01) lamb weaned per ewe lambing for ewes bred to F X R rams. For Phase II, approximately equal numbers of F X R-sired (1/4Fx) and WF-sired female lambs produced in Phase I each year were exposed to Suffolk rams at yearly intervals beginning at 7 mo of age. At 1 yr of age, 1/4Fx had higher fertility (P less than .01) than WF (37.7% vs 1.3%), resulting in 14.0 kg more lamb weaned per ewe exposed to breeding. Mature (ages 2 to 6 yr) 1/4Fx ewes had similar fertility to mature WF ewes, but litter size, number of lambs at 60 d and weaning was .36, .24 and .22 lambs higher (P less than .01), respectively, for mature 1/4Fx. Progeny of 1/4Fx were lighter at birth (P less than .01), but not different (P greater than .05) at 60 d and weaning than those of WF. Survival to 60 d unadjusted and adjusted for birth weight was 4.6% (P less than .05) and 7.6% (P less than .01) higher, respectively, for 1/4Fx progeny than for WF progeny.(ABSTRACT TRUNCATED AT 250 WORDS)  相似文献

The 4 yr productivity of 25% (QF; n = 533) and 50% (HF; n = 531) Finnsheep ewes exposed to either Suffolk or Columbia rams in one of three production systems was monitored to test the effects of system, terminal sire breed, maternal line, and their interactions on annual market lamb production. Ewe lambs and yearlings were randomly assigned to either a high-input accelerated lambing system (HIGH), a high-input annual system (MED), or a low-input annual system (LOW). Nursery facilities were available for weak lambs or those born in triplet or more births for the HIGH and MED but not for the LOW systems. Accelerated lambing protocol required early weaning. Sex-adjusted lamb weaning weights were corrected to within-system mean ages of 42 d for HIGH and 70 d for MED and LOW. The HIGH ewes weaned 1.55 lambs per year compared with 1.46 for MED and 1.18 for LOW (P less than .01). However, because of early weaning, HIGH yielded the lowest weight of weaned lamb per year. The MED ewes weaned 5.9 and 11.1 more kilograms of lamb per year than the LOW and HIGH ewes, respectively (P less than .01). The HIGH system may be economically feasible if young lambs could be inexpensively grown to feeder or market lamb weight. The HIGH ewes did not, however, increase lamb numbers in proportion to increased exposures compared with the annual systems. Breed-group effects for ewe productivity (kilogram of lamb weaned per ewe per year) were consistent across management systems, although some interactions among breed group and system were present for components of productivity. Suffolk rams yielded an advantage of 1.6 kg of weaned lamb per exposure over Columbia rams (P less than .05) due to a 3% better lamb survival (P less than .01) and heavier weaning weight, especially in the LOW system. The HF ewes weaned .1 more lambs per exposure than QF ewes (P less than .01); .06 of the lambs were nursery-reared. However, lambs from HF ewes had a 2% lower survival rate (P less than .05) and were 1.4 kg lighter at weaning (P less than .01), so overall productivity among HF and QF ewes was similar.  相似文献

This study utilized maternal undernutrition from early to midgestation in the ewe to determine the impact(s) of intrauterine growth restriction on postpartum growth of male offspring and the potential mechanisms involved. Multiparous ewes were fed 50% (nutrient-restricted) or 100% (control-fed) of their nutrient requirements (NRC, 1985) between d 28 and 78 of gestation, and then all ewes were fed 100% of the NRC requirements from d 79 through lambing. Male lambs born to nutrient-restricted (n = 9) and control-fed (n = 9) ewes exhibited similar BW (5.8 vs. 6.0 +/- 0.3 kg) and crown-rump lengths (53.8 vs. 55.4 +/- 1.0 cm) at birth. At 63 and 250 d of postnatal age, wether lambs were subjected to a glucose tolerance test, in which a bolus of glucose was administered i.v. to evaluate changes in glucose and insulin concentrations. After i.v. glucose administration at 63 d of age, lambs from nutrient-restricted ewes exhibited a greater area under the curve for glucose (AUCg; 6,281 vs. 5,242 +/- 429; P < 0.05) and insulin (AUCi; 21.0 vs. 8.6 +/- 1.9; P < 0.001) than lambs from control-fed ewes. After glucose administration at 250 d of age, lambs from nutrient-restricted ewes had greater AUCg (7,147 vs. 5,823 +/- 361; P < 0.01) but a lower AUCi (6.4 vs. 10.2 +/- 1.9; P = 0.05) than lambs from control-fed ewes. Lambs from nutrient-restricted ewes were heavier (26.6 vs. 21.8 +/- 2.3 kg; P < 0.05) and had more backfat (0.30 vs. 0.21 +/- 0.03 cm, P < 0.05) by 4 mo of age than the lambs from control-fed ewes. At slaughter at 280 d of age, lambs from nutrient-restricted ewes remained heavier than lambs from control-fed ewes, had greater (P < 0.05) amounts of kidney and pelvic-area adipose tissue, and tended (P < 0.10) to have reduced LM and semitendinosus muscle weights as a percentage of HCW. These data demonstrate that a bout of maternal undernutrition during early to midgestation in sheep increased BW and fat deposition during adolescence and dysregulated glucose uptake in the absence of any change in birth weight.  相似文献

The aim of this work was to investigate whether Cu, alone or in combination with Mo, reduces the Se status of sheep. Thirty-six Hampshire ewes were separated prior to mating into four treatment groups of nine sheep each. The four groups consisted of 1) basal (alfalfa hay or legume-grass low-moisture silage, corn, oats), 2) basal plus 10 mg Cu/kg diet, 3) basal plus 10 mg Mo/kg and 4) basal plus Cu and Mo (each 10 mg/kg). Copper and Mo were added to both ewe and lamb diets. Treatments continued until lambs were weaned at 10 wk postpartum. The basal ewe diet contained, in mg/kg, 5.6 Cu, .05 Se and 1.0 Mo. The basal lamb diet contained, in mg/kg, 6.1 Cu, .07 Se and less than 1.0 Mo. Sulfur concentrations in the ewe and lamb diets were .24% and .20%, respectively. Copper supplements increased, and Mo supplements decreased, the concentration of Cu in the livers of ewes and lambs (P less than .05). Despite this, there were no effects of treatment on Se concentration or glutathione peroxidase activity in blood or tissues. Selenium levels in plasma of all ewes declined throughout pregnancy and lactation, indicating that .05 mg/kg Se was insufficient for the maintenance of Se status during pregnancy in Hampshire ewes. Copper and Se levels (mg/kg fresh weight) in the liver of lambs at weaning for Treatments 1 through 4 were 48 and .13, 158 and .10, 11 and .11, and 136 and .13, respectively.(ABSTRACT TRUNCATED AT 250 WORDS)  相似文献

Milk production and lamb growth were characterized in 118 multiparous, 3- to 7-yr-old Rambouillet, Columbia, Polypay, and Suffolk ewes under spring sage range and high mountain meadow grazing from 28 to 98 d postpartum. Daily milk yield as measured by the lamb suckling weight differential technique did not differ (P greater than .05) among breeds, although milk production of Suffolk ewes tended to be higher than that of the other three breeds. Within the Rambouillet, Columbia, and Polypay breeds, total estimated yield of ewes with twins was 13 to 17% higher than that of ewes with singles, whereas in the Suffolk breed, suckling twins increased total milk yield 61% over that of ewes with singles. Twin lambs induced a larger differential in dam milk production in late lactation (70 to 98 d) than in earlier lactation (28 to 70 d). Number of lambs did not influence milk protein, Ca, or P content (P greater than .05). Fat levels in colostrum and 4-d milk were elevated 14 and 20%, respectively, in ewes suckling twins compared with ewes suckling singles. Under range conditions, Suffolk ewes suckling single or twin lambs lost more BW (12 and 21% of 4-d postpartum body weight, respectively) than Rambouillet (4 and 7%), Columbia (5 and 8%), or Polypay (8 and 8%) ewes. Correlation coefficients of milk production and lamb growth rate were positive and significant (P less than .05) up to 56 d of age. Growth rate was less closely associated with milk production for twin than for single lambs.  相似文献

The objective of this experiment was to examine the effects of body condition (BC) and of lasalocid (L) the last 4 wk of gestation on blood metabolite profiles, lamb birth weight and colostrum composition and production. Twenty-eight 3-yr-old Finn-Targhee ewes (73 kg) were assigned randomly within BC grouping (2.5 or 3.5) and individually fed a diet of 90% alfalfa pellets and 10% of a supplement containing either no L (C = control) or L. Gestation and 24-h postlambing weights were higher (P less than .05) for 3.5 BC versus 2.5 BC ewes. Lasalocid had no effect (P greater than .05) on ewe weight. Average number of lambs born within treatment groups were similar (P greater than .05). Total kilograms of lamb born were greater (P less than .10) for 3.5 BC ewes. Body condition 3.5 ewes had greater concentrations of total protein (P less than .10) and albumin (P less than .05) the last 4 wk of gestation than those in the 2.5 BC group. Feeding L decreased (P less than .05) blood urea-N in comparison with C ewes. Colostrum composition and production were not influenced (P greater than .05) by BC, L or number of lambs born. Serum 3-hydroxybutyrate seemed to be a good indicator of energy metabolism; albumin and blood urea-N concentrations reflected dietary protein intake. Lasalocid had a minimal effect on nutrient metabolism and productivity of ewes fed in excess of the NRC (1985) protein and energy requirements.  相似文献

Pregnant ewes (d 32 of gestation) were allocated to three treatments and given intraruminal controlled-release devices designed to deliver 0, 20 or 60 mg diammonium tetrathiomolybdate (TTM) per day. Ewes given 20 or 60 mg TTM/d also received an oral drench of 120 or 360 mg TTM twice weekly commencing on d 86 of gestation. Liver and kidney samples were taken from lambs 48 h after birth and from ewes on d 18 postpartum. Trichloroacetic acid soluble Cu, ceruloplasmin and superoxide dismutase activities in the plasma of ewes were decreased (P less than .05) by TTM. Liver Cu concentrations were decreased (P less than .05), but kidney Cu concentrations increased (P less than .05) by 16-fold in ewes given the higher dose of TTM. Liver and kidney Mo concentrations were elevated (P less than .05) 9- and 30-fold, respectively, in ewes given TTM. Plasma glucose concentrations in ewes were decreased (P less than .05) by the highest level of TTM treatment. Lambs of ewes given TTM had a fivefold increase (P less than .05) in liver Mo concentration, but kidney Mo concentration was not affected (P greater than .05) and liver Cu concentration was reduced (P less than .05). In ewes, Mo apparently caused Cu to be mobilized from the liver and a Cu and Mo complex accumulated in the kidney. Some Mo crossed the placenta, but only limited Mo accumulated in the fetal livers. When given to pregnant ewes, TTM reduced liver Cu levels in the lambs but did not affect the concentration of Cu in colostrum.  相似文献

Effects of number of lambs suckled and supplemental protein source on ewe performance were determined. Lactation performance of ewes nursing twin or triplet lambs was compared in Exp. 1 and 2. In Exp. 1, ewes giving birth to and nursing triplets produced 21% (P less than .05) more milk/unit metabolic body weight, were 10% more efficient in the conversion of feed to milk and produced 26% (P less than .05) more kg of lamb/ewe on d 42 of lactation than did ewes giving birth to and nursing twins. In Exp. 2, lactation performance of ewes giving birth to triplets and rearing only two lambs was compared with performance of ewes giving birth to triplets and rearing three lambs. Ewes rearing three lambs produced 28% (P less than .08) more milk and were 26% (P less than .05) more efficient in converting feed to milk than were those rearing two lambs. This suggests that direct nursing stimulation of the mammary gland is responsible for the improvement in milk production observed when ewes nurse additional lambs. The efficacy of slowly degradable protein sources for improved lactation was studied in Exp. 3 and 4. When blood meal was fed to twin-rearing ewes at 3.30% of the diet (25% of total dietary protein), milk production was greater (3,176 vs. 2,506 g/d, P less than .05) and efficiency of milk production was greater (1.05 vs .79 g milk/g feed, P less than .05) than when ewes were fed supplemental soybean meal. Ewes in this experiment fed supplemental meat and bone meal also tended to produce more milk than those fed soybean meal.(ABSTRACT TRUNCATED AT 250 WORDS)  相似文献

Lactation and growth of three contemporary lines of grade Targhee sheep developed from the same genetic base were characterized by three experiments performed over a period of 2 yr. Two lines (HW and DH) had been selected for 120-d weaning weights for 24 yr prior to beginning these experiments. A third line (C) was a randomly selected control. Year I experiment contrasted 10 DH with 7 C ram lambs fed to 58 kg. Year II experiments utilized 9 C, 14 DH and 10 HW ram lambs and 11 ewes suckling twins from each line. All Year II ram lambs were born and weaned as twins, then fed to 50 kg. Mature DH and HW ewes were heavier (P less than .05) than C ewes (65.2 and 68.8 vs 54.9 kg), and the DH and HW lambs grew faster than C lambs both before (P less than .05) and after weaning (P less than .05). While both DH and HW lambs drank more milk (2,419 and 2,368 vs 2,059 g X d-1 X pair-1; P less than .10) only HW ewes showed a trend towards greater potential milk production than controls (HW = 2,774 vs C = 2,155 g X d-1 X ewe-1 P less than .12). The HW lambs tended to be leaner than C lambs (P less than .05), but DH lambs did not differ from either line. Lambs from DH and HW lines required less post-weaning feed (121.9 and 129.3 vs 152.0 kg P less than .05) and exhibited 17 and 16% greater weight per day of age at 50 kg than controls (P less than .05). The DH line displayed lower feed: gain ratios than controls in both post-weaning trials (6.68 vs 7.30 to 58 kg; 5.83 vs 6.24 at 50 kg; P = .06).  相似文献

Twin-bearing Targhee ewes (Exp. 1, 1 yr, n = 42) and 1,182 single- and twin-bearing whiteface range ewes (Exp. 2, n = 8 experimental units over 2 yr) were used in a 2 x 2 factorial arrangement of treatments to determine the effect of supplemental energy source and level of vitamin E supplement on lamb serum metabolites and thermogenesis (Exp. 1) and on lamb growth (Exp. 2). During late gestation, ewes were individually fed (Exp. 1) or group-fed (Exp. 2) a daily supplement. Supplements were 226 g/ewe of daily safflower seed (DM basis; SS) with either 350 IU/ewe daily (VE) or no added supplemental (VC) vitamin E; or 340 g/ewe daily of a barley-based grain supplement (DM basis; GC) and either VE or VC. One hour postpartum in Exp. 1, twin-born lambs were placed in a 0 degrees C dry cold chamber for 30 min. Lamb rectal temperature was recorded every 60 s and blood samples were taken immediately before and after cold exposure. In Exp. 2, lambs were weighed at birth, at turnout from confinement to spring range (32 d of age +/- 7; turnout), and at weaning (120 d of age +/- 7). Ewes were weighed at turnout and weaning. In Exp. 1, a level of vitamin E x energy source interaction was detected (P < 0.10) for body temperature and change in NEFA and glucose concentrations. Lambs from SSVC ewes had the lowest (P = 0.01) body temperature and had decreased (P = 0.08) NEFA concentration. The SS lambs tended to have decreased (P < 0.11) concentrations of blood urea N (BUN) and thyroxine at 0 min than did lambs born to GC ewes. After 30 min of cold exposure, SS lambs had increased and GC lambs had decreased BUN, triiodothyronine, and triiodothyronine:thyroxine concentrations (P < 0.10). In Exp. 2, kilograms of lamb per ewe at turnout and weaning and lamb survival at weaning were greater (P < 0.07) for GC than SS lambs. Based on the decreased body temperature in SSVC lambs at birth, the greater change in BUN during the cold exposure for SS than GC lambs, and the decreased survival rate for SS than GC lambs, SSVC-supplemented ewes appeared to give birth to lambs with an apparently decreased energetic capacity. This may compromise the ability of the newborn lamb to adapt to extreme environmental conditions.  相似文献

A total of 64 Rambouillet ewes was utilized in this study. Ewes were fed a 50:50 mixture of alfalfa and prairie hay ad libitum and either no concentrates (C), .4 kg concentrates . head-1 X d-1 (S) or .4 kg concentrates containing 73 ppm lasalocid . head-1 X d-1 (SL) during the last 50 d of pregnancy and through 60 d of lactation. A total of 163 skin samples was obtained from the mid-side region of the lambs at birth, 1 and 2 mo of age, and follicle traits were estimated by histological techniques. Wool growth per unit area (100 cm2) was estimated by clipping wool from both right and left mid-sides of all ewes 60 d postpartum. Birth weight of single lambs did not differ (P greater than .20) among treatments. Twin lambs of supplemented ewes were heavier (P less than .01) at birth than those of control ewes and the difference between S and SL groups was not significant. Compared with the control, concentrate supplementation with or without lasalocid increased (P less than .01) postnatal lamb survival and ewe productivity, expressed as kilograms of lamb weaned per ewe lambed. The C, S and SL groups weaned 12.50, 18.52 and 20.72 kg/ewe lambed (P less than .01), respectively. Maternal concentrate supplementation did not influence secondary to primary wool follicle ratio (Sf/Pf) of single lambs (P greater than .20). Twin lambs of the S ewes tended to have higher Sf/Pf than controls. The SL twins had intermediate Sf/Pf values (P greater than .20).(ABSTRACT TRUNCATED AT 250 WORDS)  相似文献

Pregnant St. Croix White and Barbados Blackbelly hair sheep ewes were used to evaluate the effect of supplemental nutrition around the time of lambing on ewe and lamb performance during the dry and wet seasons on St. Croix. Beginning 14 d before expected day of lambing (d 0) and for 21 d postpartum, one group of ewes was fed a pelleted supplement in addition to grazing guinea grass pasture (FEED). Other ewes in the flock grazed pasture only (CONTROL). This study was conducted during the dry season (June through September; FEED n = 14 and CONTROL n = 15) and during the wet season the next year (October through January; FEED n = 11 and CONTROL n = 12). The 24-h milk production of each ewe was measured on d 7, 21, 35, 49, and 63. Ewes were exposed to sterile rams equipped with marking harnesses to detect estrus during the postpartum period. The FEED ewes lost less weight postpartum during both seasons (P < 0.0001) and had higher milk production (P < 0.009) than CONTROL ewes during the dry season. During the dry season, the time to the first postpartum estrus did not differ (P > 0.10) between FEED and CONTROL ewes (46.9 +/- 2.7 vs 52.9 +/- 2.6 d, respectively). During the wet season, the time to first postpartum estrus was less (P < 0.07) in FEED than in CONTROL ewes (33.0 +/- 3.1 vs 41.1 +/- 2.9 d, respectively). The FEED ewes had higher lamb birth weight (P < 0.04) and weaning weight (P < 0.05) than CONTROL ewes (3.2 +/- 0.1 and 12.2 +/- 0.5 vs 2.9 +/- 0.1 and 10.9 +/- 0.5 kg, respectively) during the dry season. In the wet season, lamb birth weight and weaning weight were similar (P > 0.10) between FEED and CONTROL (3.2 +/- 0.1 and 15.5 +/- 0.7 vs 3.1 +/- 0.1 and 15.3 +/- 0.6 kg, respectively). Lambs born during the wet season had higher (P < 0.0001) ADG than lambs born during the dry season (194.4 +/- 5.9 vs 127.7 +/- 4.7 g/d, respectively). Strategic nutritional supplementation of hair sheep ewes may provide a method for increasing the weight of lambs produced during the dry season in the tropics, but it does not seem to be beneficial during the wet season.  相似文献

Six hundred sixteen ewes of six strains were inoculated twice with ovalbumin in Freunds' incomplete adjuvant. To quantify the humoral immune response to the foreign antigen, blood samples were collected from all ewes 1 wk post-second injection. Blood samples were also collected between 4 and 40 h of age from their 709 lambs, to examine genetic differences in ability of lambs to acquire maternal anti-ovalbumin antibodies. Titers of anti-ovalbumin antibodies were determined using kinetic enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA) techniques. Strain did not affect ewe immune response, but sire within strain was highly significant. In pregnant ewes, anti-ovalbumin antibody titers in 12- and 30-mo-old ewes were higher than those in 21-mo-old ewes. Number of lambs in utero did not significantly affect ewe immune response. Heritabilities of anti-ovalbumin titer from a paternal half-sib analysis were .27 +/- .17 for all ewes and .57 +/- .25 for only the pregnant ewes. The effect of strain of lamb on lamb anti-ovalbumin titer approached significance, and sire within strain was highly significant. Lamb anti-ovalbumin antibody concentration increased as time from birth to blood sampling increased to 18 h but declined thereafter. The size of the litter in which a lamb was born had a highly significant effect on the lamb's acquired immunity, with titer decreasing as litter size increased. The heritability estimate for lamb anti-ovalbumin antibody concentration from a paternal half-sib analysis was .38 +/- .11; it was .28 +/- .15 from the sire variance component of a full-sib analysis. When lamb titer was considered a maternal trait (lambs nested within their maternal grandsires within strains), the maternal grandsire variance component was negative. The average anti-ovalbumin antibody concentration of lambs that died between blood sample collection and 120 d of age was less than the average antibody concentration of lambs that survived (P less than .01).  相似文献

This study investigated effects of birth weight and postnatal nutrition on regulation of energy metabolism in the neonatal lamb. Low (mean +/- SD 2.289 +/- 0.341 kg, n = 28) and high (4.840 +/- 0.446 kg, n = 20) birth weight male Suffolk x (Finnsheep x Dorset) lambs were individually reared on a liquid diet to grow rapidly (ad libitum fed, ADG = 337 g, n = 20) or slowly (ADG = 150 g, n = 20) from birth to live weights (LW) up to approximately 20 kg. At birth, small newborns had higher plasma concentrations of urea nitrogen (mean +/- SEM 8.31 +/- 0.25 vs 6.39 +/- 0.32 mM, P = 0.002) and somatotropin (ST, 49.1 +/- 17.0 vs 10.8 +/- 4.3 ng/mL, P = .045) and lower IGF-I (36.1 +/- 6.8 vs 157.7 +/- 21.8 ng/mL, P < 0.001) than large newborns. Plasma glucose (1.42 +/- 0.23 vs 2.63 +/- 0.95 mM, P = 0.147) and insulin (0.09 +/- 0.02 vs 0.13 +/- 0.06 ng/mL, P = 0.264) concentrations did not differ. Urea nitrogen concentration in plasma peaked and then declined rapidly in all lambs during the first week postpartum, and plasma ST declined on a body-weight-related basis from birth. During rearing to 20 kg LW, plasma insulin was higher in low- vs high-birth-weight lambs. Lambs fed ad libitum had greater plasma concentrations of glucose, urea nitrogen, insulin, and IGF-I compared to those fed a restricted diet (ADG = 150 g). The results suggest that during the early postpartum period, newborn lambs exhibit the fetal characteristic of high rates of amino acid oxidation. The results also support the notion that, at birth, low-birth-weight lambs are less mature than high-birth-weight lambs in aspects of metabolic and endocrine development, which may enhance their capacity to utilize amino acids for energy production and to support gluconeogenesis during the immediate postpartum period. Being small at birth also resulted in elevated plasma insulin concentrations when adequate nutriment to support moderate or rapid growth was provided postpartum, although it remains to be elucidated whether this more chronic effect persists in the longer term.  相似文献

Nitrogen metabolism by lactating ewes and their lambs   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
Twenty multiparous ewes and their newborn lambs were assigned to a 2 x 2 factorial experiment in which ewes were fed ad libitum either a moderate (MP, 15%) or a low (LP, 10%) CP diet and nursed either twin (T) or single (S) lambs. Nitrogen (N) balance trials were conducted on both the ewes and lambs during wk 2, 4 and 8 of lactation. Nitrogen balance, N digested and the portion of digested N retained were greater (P less than .01) with the MP diet. Nitrogen retention and serum urea-N values were lower for the ewes nursing T lambs. Plasma beta-hydroxybutyrate and serum glucose values were lower (P less than .01) for ewes fed the LP diet, and certain plasma amino acids and the ketogenic amino acids were lower with the LP diet. Insulin increased (P less than .01) with time throughout lactation. Triiodothyronine (T3) concentrations were higher (P less than .01) in ewes nursing T lambs. Thyroxine (T4) was greater (P less than .04) with the LP diet and greater (P less than .01) for ewes nursing T lambs. The T4:T3 ratio was lower (P less than .02) in the ewes consuming LP. The portion of the ewe's retained N used for milk synthesis was lower (P less than .01) with the MP diet. Ewes fed LP and nursing T lambs utilized all of their retained N plus a portion of their body protein reserves for milk production by the 2nd wk of lactation. Body weights of creep-fed lambs were not changed by protein content of the ewe's diet.  相似文献

Lifetime production of first-generation 1/4 and 1/2 Finnsheep crossbred ewes from Rambouillet (R), Targhee (T) and Columbia (C) dams was compared with that from randomly selected purebred R, T and C ewes. All 1,190 ewes, representing nine breed groups, were managed under range conditions and mated annually to Suffolk rams. Lifetime production was evaluated as the total lamb and total wool production per ewe from the time each entered the breeding flock at 7 mo of age through the period each remained in the flock (potentially seven producing years). Culling was for debilitating unsoundness only. The study was designed to determine the average lifetime production per breed group as affected by natural ewe attrition. Orphan-reared lambs were not included in lamb production nor were foster lambs, except those actually born in and reared by the groups. Differences among pooled breed groups (1/4 Finns, 1/2 Finns and purebreds) were not significant for average final age in the flock (5.1, 5.1 and 4.9 yr, respectively), but differences were significant (P less than .01) for lifetime lamb and wool production. Average lifetime fleece weights of 1/4 and 1/2 Finn ewes were only 95 and 82% as high, respectively, as those of purebreds. However, 1/4 and 1/2 Finn ewes had 34 and 46%, respectively, higher numbers of lambs weaned (at 130 d) and 30 and 38% higher total weight of lamb weaned than purebreds.(ABSTRACT TRUNCATED AT 250 WORDS)  相似文献
