We report a phenomenal increase in strength, modulus, and fracture strain of ultra high molecular weight polyethylene (UHMWPE) fiber by 103 %, 219 %, and 108 %, respectively through hybridizing this fiber with Nylon 6 as a minor phase and simultaneously reinforcing it with single-walled carbon nanotubes (SWCNTs). Loading of Nylon 6 and SWCNTs into UHMWPE was 20.0 wt% and 2.0 wt%, respectively. Hybridized fibers were processed using a solution spinning method coupled with melt mixing and extrusion. We claim that the enhancement in strain-to-failure of the nanocomposites is due to induced plasticity in the hybridized Nylon 6-UHMWPE polymers. The enhancement in strength and stiffness in the nanocomposites is attributed to the load sharing of the SWCNTs during deformation. Differential scanning calorimetry (DSC), X-ray diffraction (XRD), scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) studies showed that changes in percent crystallinity, rate of crystallization, crystallite size, alignment of nanotubes, sliding of polymer interfaces and strong adhesion of CNT/polymer blends were responsible for such enhancements.  相似文献

The multi-walled carbon nanotube (MWNT)/cellulose nanocomposites were prepared by using monohydrated Nmethylmorpholine-N-oxide (NMMO) as a solvent for dispersing the acid-treated MWNTs (A-MWNTs) as well as for dissolving the cellulose. The A-MWNTs were well dispersed in both monohydrated NMMO and the nanocomposite films. The nanocomposite films were prepared by a film-casting method onto a glass plate. The tensile strain at break, Young’s modulus, and toughness of nanocomposite films increased by ~5, ~2 and ~12 times, respectively at ? (A-MWNT content in the nanocomposite)=0.8 wt%, as compared to those of the pure cellulose film. The thermal degradation temperature of the nanocomposite films also increased from 329 to 339 oC by incorporation of 1 wt% A-MENTs. The electric conductivities of the A-MWNT/cellulose nanocomposites at ? =1 and 10 wt% were 2.09×10?5 and 3.68×10?3 S/cm, respectively. The transmittances were 86, 69 and 55 % at 550 nm for 0.4, 0.8 and 1 wt% nanocomposite films, respectively. Thus, these nanocomposites are promising materials in terms of all the properties studied in this paper and can be used for many applications, such as toughened cellulose fibers, transparent electrodes, etc.  相似文献

A useful reinforcement for carbon fiber (CF) composites was found by performing the assisted electrophoretic deposition (EPD) of graphene oxide (GO) for carbon nanotubes (CNTs) onto the CF surface. GO-assisted EPD of CNTs was conducted without the use any other pre-treatment or additives in order to avoid destroying the structure of the CNTs and to facilitate preparation of stable dispersion that was suitable for EPD. The presence of GO-CNTs may effectively increase both the roughness and wettability of the CF surface, resulting in an improvement to the interfacial bonding strength between the CF and the epoxy (EP). In contrast to the pristine CF/EP composite, the GO-CNTs/CF/EP composite exhibited a 64.6 % increase in interlaminar shear strength. Meanwhile, the water absorption of the composites decreased from 0.36 wt.% to 0.14 wt.%. The variable surface morphology, surface roughness, surface free energy and surface chemical composition of the CF were considered to have had an effect on the interfacial properties of the CF/EP composites; these effects could be seen using atomic force microscopes, scanning electron microscopes, X-ray photoelectron microscopes and contact angle analysis characterizations.  相似文献

A study on the tensile and flexural properties of jute-glass-carbon fibers reinforced epoxy hybrid composites in inter-ply configuration is presented in this paper. Test specimens were manufactured by hand lay-up process and their tensile and flexural properties were obtained. The effects of the hybridization, different fibers content and plies stacking sequence on the mechanical properties of the tested hybrid composites were investigated. Two-parameter Weibull distribution function was used to statistically analyze the experimental results. The failure probability graphs for the tested composites were drawn. These graphs are important tools for helping the designers to understand and choose the suitable material for the required design and development. Results showed that the hybridization process can potentially improve the tensile and flexural properties of jute reinforced composite. The flexural strength decreases when partial laminas from a carbon/epoxy laminate are replaced by glass/epoxy or jute/epoxy laminas. Also, it is realized that incorporating high strength fibers to the outer layers of the composite leads to higher flexural resistance, whilst the order of the layers doesn’t affect the tensile properties.  相似文献

Carbon fibers were coated with E51 plus Methacryl-POSS together in an attempt to improve the interfacial properties between carbon fibers and unsaturated polyester resins matrix. Atomic force microscopy (AFM), scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) were performed to characterize the changes of carbon fiber surface. AFM results show that the coating of E51 plus POSS significantly increased the carbon fiber surface roughness. XPS indicates that silicon containing functional groups obviously increased after modification. Dynamic mechanical analysis was carried out to investigate the surface energy of carbon fiber. Force modulation atomic force microscopy (FMAFM) and Interlaminar shear strength (ILSS) were used to characterize the interfacial properties of the composites. ILSS was increased by 21.9 % after treatment.  相似文献

In recent years, composites based on glass fiber reinforced polymer have been widely used in order to meet increasing durability and safety regulations, particularly in the power cable, automotive and plane industry. In this paper, mechanical and electrical properties of high density polyethylene (HDPE) and HDPE containing glass fiber polymer composites were investigated and compared at different temperatures. Composite materials were prepared with the hot pressing method. Tensile strength, % elongation and the modulus of elasticity (or Young’s modulus) were determined for each sample at different temperatures. In addition to this, at different temperatures τ σ and τ E have mechanical and electrical lifetime respectively, corresponding to mechanical tension (σ) and electrical strength (E), and this was investigated for each sample. As compared to the mechanical and electrical properties of neat HDPE, HDPE/0.5 % glass fiber composites have been found to have better mechanical and electrical durability.  相似文献

In this paper, the bending properties of woven carbon/glass and carbon/aramid fabric-reinforced polymer laminates is studied using a combination of experimental analysis and fracture observation. Six types of each hybrid composite were manufactured by lamination of the carbon/aramid fabric and carbon/glass fabric using VARTM. Bending behaviors were fundamentally evaluated for the six types of monolithic composites laminated by the same fabric. The objective was to achieve a good bending strength by effective combination of composite structures using limited amounts of a raw material. It was shown that the bending property was different, depending on the type of fiber, lamination structure, and the number of layers.  相似文献

In order to assess the effect of cosolvent on the dissolved amounts of supercritical carbon dioxide (SCCO2) in bamboo fiber/polypropylene (BF/PP) composites, the dissolved amounts were measured at 313.15 K and pressures ranging from 15 to 25 MPa by a gravimetric method. The diffusion of mixed solvents out of BF/PP presented Fickian behavior and Fick’s diffusion model was applied to determine the dissolved amounts. The increase of dissolved amounts with the addition of ethanol can be explained not only by the density effect, but also by the specific interactions (especially hydrogen bonding) between the solute and cosolvent. The cosolvent effect reached a clear maximum at 20 MPa for both 2 % and 4 % ethanol, which seemed to be the result of specific interactions in concert with the difference between local and bulk density.  相似文献

Intra-layer and inter-layer hybrid composite laminates were made with epoxy resin and compositions were varied in six different proportions. In-plane compressive mechanical properties were studied using finite element analysis and experiments, and the results found were in good agreement. Properties of intra-layer and inter-layer hybrids were compared with plain carbon/epoxy and plain glass/epoxy composites, and a comparison among themselves was also made. It was found that intra-layer hybrids to some extent exhibit better compressive properties compared to inter-layer hybrids. Percentage enhancement in compressive failure strain was noticed. Negative hybrid effects on compressive strength was noticed for both intra-layer and inter-layer hybrid configurations. It was found that proportion of carbon fiber content plays a key role in determining the compressive properties. According to macro-scale observation all composite laminates failed catastrophically under compressive loading. SEM observation depicted that under compressive loading carbon fibers break first followed by glass fiber.  相似文献

In this paper, the short carbon fiber (SCF)/PP composite foams with fine open cell were prepared with batch foaming technique using supercritical CO2. The effects of SCF contents, saturation pressure and depressurization rate on the cell morphology were studied. The experimental results indicate that the cell morphology of foamed composites was significantly influenced by the SCF contents and saturation pressure. It is found that the cell size increased and cell density decreased with the increment of SCF contents while the saturation pressure had the opposite effect. However, depressurization rate showed little impacts on the cell morphology due to the presence of SCF.  相似文献

The tribological performance of PA6 and carbon fiber reinforced polyamide 6 (CF/PA6) under dry sliding condition was examined. Different contents of carbon fibers were employed as reinforcement. All filled and unfilled polyamide 6 composites were tested against CGr15 ball and representative testing was performed. The effects of carbon fiber content on tribological properties of the composites were investigated. The worn surface morphologies of neat PA6 and its composites were examined by scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and the wear mechanisms were discussed. Moreover, all filled polyamide 6 have superior tribological characteristics to unfilled polyamides 6. The optimum wear reduction was obtained when the content of carbon fiber is 20 vol%.  相似文献

The aim of this study is to investigate mechanical and fracture behavior of plane weave glass fiber reinforced high density polyethylene (HDPE) thermoplastic composite using a middle tension (MT) specimen with inclined through-thickness cracks under static tension. In this study, crack growth, crack opening displacement (COD), stress intensity factors and fracture toughness are studied. Crack growth and crack opening displacement values are taken as a damage parameter factor for crack geometry calculations. Experimental results are evaluates using both J-integraland stress intensity factormethods.  相似文献

In this paper, a novel strategy was used to prepare the bamboo fiber (BF)/polypropylene (PP) composites which greatly improved the distribution of BF. Both the raw and alkali treated BF were utilized for the fabrication of composites and silane coupling agent was used to improve the adhesion of BF and PP. The effects of BF content and the alkali treatment of BF on mechanical, thermal, morphological, dynamic mechanical properties and water absorption were studied. The Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR) analysis indicated that the hydrophilic nature of raw BF was significantly reduced by alkali treatment. In addition, the mechanical properties and the water absorption of the composites were found to increase with the increment of BF loading. Most importantly, the mechanical properties of the alkali treated BF showed much higher values than that of raw BF while the water absorption of alkali treated BF was much lower than that of raw BF. The results indicated the interaction of fiber-matrix was greatly improved by the alkali treatment. Moreover, from the Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM) images, it further proved that the distribution of BF was improved by the way of papermaking to premix BF and PP fiber. The Dynamic mechanical thermal analysis (DMA) results showed that the storage modulus of the composites was increased with further increase in BF content.  相似文献

The interface of fiber-reinforced composites has remained a vexing problem that limits the use of the excellent properties of carbon fiber (CF) in composite applications. In the present study, waterborne polyurethane (WPU) hybrid sizing agents were prepared to improve the performances of CFs and the interface strength of CF/PA6 composites. The structural and mechanical properties of the single-CF and CF/PA6 composites were systematic investigated. The results showed that the mechanical properties of the CF/PA6 composites were significantly improved by adding of WPU hybrid sizing agent. The tensile and flexural strengths of the WPU/SiO2/Al2O3 hybrid sizing agent treated CF/PA6 composites were increased by 24.0 % and 25.7 % than those of no-sizing treated CF/PA6 composites, respectively.  相似文献

Composite materials have a wide range of applications in structural components because of their high strength-to-weight and stiffness-to-weight ratios. However, the most crucial and common life-restricting crack growth mode in laminated composites i.e. delamination is of great concern. Air jet texturing was selected to provide a small amount of bulk to the glass yarn. The purpose was to provide more surface contact between the fibres and resin and also to increase the adhesion between the neighbouring layers. These were expected to enhance the resistance to delamination in the woven glass composites. The development and characterisation of core-and-effect textured glass yarns was presented in the previous paper. This paper describes the comparison of the mechanical properties of composites produced from air-textured glass yarns and the composites made from locally manufactured carbon fabrics. The tensile, flexure and inter-laminar shear strength (ILSS) were compared and it was observed that although glass fibres are inferior to carbon fibres in terms of mechanical properties however, the flexure strength and ILSS of glass based composites increases after texturing and were found closer to the properties of carbon based composites.  相似文献

We propose a novel method to uniformly graft high density carbon nanotubes (CNTs) onto carbon fiber (CF) using poly (acryloyl chloride) (PACl) as coupling agents. Compared to micromolecule couping agent previously reported in literature [2,3], PACl can supply much more active groups, which is beneficial for grafting high density CNTs onto CF surface. Moreover, in order to further increase the grafting density of CNTs, the solvothermal strategy was used for improving the reactive activity between CF and CNTs. After CNTs grafting treatment, there are still substantial amounts of reactive groups which can further react with various types of molecules to meet different requirements. In order to create chemical bonding between CF and unsaturated polyester (UP), CF-CNT was further grafted with undecylenic alcohol (UA) to get CF-CNT-UA hierarchical reinforcement. The interfacial adhesion of the resulting composites showed a dramatic improvement.  相似文献

In this research, halloysite nanotubes (HNTs) were incorporated into ultra-high molecular weight polyethylene (UHMWPE) in order to prepare the nanocomposite fibers by a gel-spun and hot drawing process. The HNTs were treated with oleic acid to improve the dispersion in the UHMWPE fibers. Both the crystallinity tested by differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) and mechanical properties increased with a low loading of HNTs, and decreased with a high loading. The thermal gravimetric analysis (TGA) test showed the thermal stability to improve with the incorporation of HNT. The addition of HNT did not change the crystal type, according to the X-ray diffraction (XRD) study.  相似文献

This study uses polypropylene (PP)/high-density polyethylene (HDPE) polyblends (80/20 wt.%) as matrices, which are then melt-blended with inorganic carbon fibers (CF) as reinforcement to form electrically conductive PP/HDPE composites. Tensile test, flexural test, Izod impact test, scanning electron microscopy (SEM), differential scanning calorimetry (DSC), and X-ray diffraction (XRD) are performed to evaluate different physical properties of samples. A surface resistance and electromagnetic interference shielding effectiveness (EMI SE) measurements are used to evaluate the electrical properties of the PP/HDPE/CF composites. Test results show that an increasing content of carbon fibers results in an 18 %, 23 %, and 60 % higher tensile strength, flexural strength, and impact strength, respectively. SEM results show that carbon fibers break as a result of applied force, thereby bearing the force and increasing the mechanical properties of composites. DSC and XRD results show that the addition of carbon fibers causes heterogeneous nucleation in PP/HDPE polyblends, thereby increasing crystallization temperature. However, the crystalline structure of PP/HDPE composites is not affected. Surface resistivity results show that 5 wt.% of carbon fibers can form a conductive network in PP/HDPE polyblends and reduce the surface resistivity from 12×1012 ohm/sq to 4×103 ohm/sq. EMI SE results show that, with a 20 wt.% CF and a frequency of 2-3 GHz, the average EMI SE of PP/HDPE/CF composites is between -48 and -52 dB, qualifying their use for EMI SE, which is required for standard electronic devices.  相似文献

In effort to improve the soft properties of ramie fiber, we synthesized a carboxylate-containing polymer for use as a modifying agent, and successfully modified the ramie fiber in a strong base with the carboxylate-containing polymer. We applied Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), X-ray diffraction (XRD), thermogravimetric analysis (TGA), and scanning electron microscopy (SEM) to investigate the structures of the raw and modified ramie fibers, and further investigated the mechanical and dyeing properties of the raw and modified ramie fibers. The results showed that the surface of the ramie fiber underwent significant changes due to the grafting reaction of the carboxylate-containing polymer and fiber. After the chemical modification, the flexural strength and initial modulus of the modified ramie fiber decreased while tensile strength increased, indicating that the softness of the modified ramie fiber increased though its tensile resistance remained high. In addition, the fixation of reactive dyes on the modified ramie fiber was larger than that of the reactive dyes on the raw ramie fiber. Our observations of mechanical properties and dye fixation indicated that the carboxylate-containing polymer is an effective and efficient soft modifier.  相似文献

In this article, we demonstrated the preparation of carbon-fiber-reinforced composites using a polyamide 6 (PA6)/thermoplastic polyurethane (TPU) blend, in which the addition of TPU resulted in superior mechanical performances and increased thermal stability. According to various characterization techniques, these results are attributed to an enhanced adhesion and a homogeneous dispersion of long-carbon-fibers (LCFs) with TPU sizing in blended polymer matrix. Above all, dynamic-mechanical thermal analysis (DMTA) measurements clearly show that the dynamic storage modulus (E') of the blend composites is increased by threefold with temperature ranges below and above the glass transition temperature. The presence of LCFs in TPU systems induces effective fiber orientation, exhibiting simultaneous improvements in the tensile strength, flexural strength, and thermal stability.  相似文献
