The Merkel cells and associated nervous terminal plates have been called toruli tactiles (TT). These structures can be ubiquitously seen on the shaved hairy skin after staining with a methylene blue solution. Four La Mancha goats of both sexes were examined for the density of TT. TT were visually located under a binocular dissecting microscopic (14x) and then the number of TT in the field was directly counted. The density of TT in different corporal areas of the body surface was estimated from the mean of several two-cm square samples of skin. The results obtained are as follows: The mean number per two-cm square on the whole body surface ranged from 10.06-11.36 in the male specimen and from 12.98-14.32 in the female specimen. The density of TT was rather high in the temporal and buccal areas, on the neck, chin and cranial breast, and on the lateral surface of the arm, thigh and leg. Density was moderate in the fronto-parieto-occipital area (female), on the loin and buttocks, in the upper costal, lower caudo-costal, xiphoid-umbilical and umbilical-pubic areas, and on the lateral surface of the forearm. TT were absent or very few in number on the nose and chin, the scrotum, caudal-pubic area of males, the udder, the vulva, and the digitorum manus et pedis.  相似文献

Mast cell counts, epidermal thickness and hair follicle density were quantified in toluidine blue stained sections of normal skin from 20 different body regions in 10 dogs and compared to the predilection sites of canine atopic dermatitis. Mast cell distribution varied significantly from site to site (P < 0.0001) and counts in the superficial dermis were significantly higher than the deeper dermis (P < 0.05). Mast cell counts were highest in the medial and lateral pinna (mean 10.4–11.3 per high power field, HPF) and in the ventral interdigital skin of the hind and fore feet (mean 9.2–9.5 per HPF). Counts in these regions were at least 150% higher than all the other sites (means ranging between 2.9 and 6.0 per HPF). Variations in mast cell counts, epidermal thickness or hair follicle density did not adequately explain the predilection sites of canine atopic dermatitis. However, the results provide some evidence that cutaneous mast cell distribution may be involved in the frequent occurrence of ear and foot pruritus in this disease.  相似文献

AIMS: To determine the effects of liveweight (LW) and condition score (CS) of ewes at mating on both mating performance and scanning percentage, and to determine if effects of CS were independent of LW. METHODS: Two groups of ewes, comprising 1,780 mixed-aged Romney (Rom MA) and 692 composite two-tooth (1/8 East Friesian 1/16 Finn 13/16 Romney, Comp TT) ewes were grazed separately with harnessed rams for two reproductive cycles. Romney rams were used for the first 17 days of mating and then replaced on the morning of Day 18 by Suffolk rams. Ewes were weighed and CS assessed on a scale of 0-5 before the introduction of the rams. Ewes were identified as having been mated during the first cycle only, during both cycles, during the second cycle only, or not mated. All mated ewes were scanned using ultrasound, 50 days after the end of mating, and identified as being either non pregnant, single-, twin- or triplet-bearing. RESULTS: Linear relationships (R2=0.99) between mean LW and CS at mating were evident for both Rom MA and Comp TT ewes and the mean increase in LW per unit increase in CS was greater in the Rom MA ewes (7.88 kg) than the Comp TT (4.78 kg) ewes (p<0.05). Ewes mated in the second cycle only were significantly (p<0.05) lighter than those mated in the first cycle only. In Rom MA ewes, a greater proportion were mated in the first cycle only if CS was >/=2.0 than if CS was <2.0, and the proportions of ewes mated in the first cycle only or in both cycles did not differ if CS was >/=2.5. In Comp TT ewes, there was no difference in the proportions mated in the first cycle or both cycles, if CS was >/=2.0. Triplet-bearing ewes were heavier than twin-bearing ewes, which were in turn heavier than both singleton-bearing and non pregnant ewes. Twin-bearing ewes had higher CS than both single-bearing and non pregnant ewes (p<0.05) but differences were not significant if LW was included as a covariate. In both Rom MA and Comp TT ewes, greater proportions were non pregnant and lower proportions had twins if CS was <2.0 than if CS was >/=2.0. In Rom MA ewes only, a greater proportion again had twins and a lower proportion had singletons if CS was >/=3.0 than if CS was <3.0. In Comp TT ewes, the proportion that were non pregnant or twin-bearing did not vary with CS if CS was >/=2.0. Reproductive performance was maximal for Rom MA and Comp TT ewes that had CS at mating >/=3.0 and >/=2.0, respectively, equating to LW of 62.6 and 48.5 kg, respectively. CONCLUSIONS: In both groups of ewes, CS and LW at mating positively affected reproductive performance measured at the time of mating and at scanning, however, no reproductive advantage was evident above a minimum CS of 3.0 and 2.0, equating to LW of 62.6 and 48.5 kg, for Rom MA and Comp TT ewes, respectively. Sheep farmers should direct management to ensure that no ewes are below these minimum targets rather than ensuring high average LW and/or CS of a mob.  相似文献

Abstract

Triplet-bearing ewes were heavier than twin-bearing ewes, which were in turn heavier than both singleton-bearing and non pregnant ewes. Twin-bearing ewes had higher CS than both single-bearing and non pregnant ewes (p<0.05) but differences were not significant if LW was included as a covariate. In both Rom MA and Comp TT ewes, greater proportions were non pregnant and lower proportions had twins if CS was <2.0 than if CS was ≥2.0. The structure and fill of the omasum was investigated in summer and in winter in adult female reindeer living on the polar desert and tundra of the high Arctic archipelago of Svalbard and in sub-Arctic mountain habitats in northern Norway. The mean total mass of the omasum in non-lactating adult female Svalbard reindeer was 467 g (0.65 g per 100 g live body mass (BM)) in September and 477 g (1.03 g per 100 g BM) in April. By contrast, the mean mass of the omasum in non-lactating adult reindeer in northern Norway was 534 g (0.83 g per 100 g BM) in September but only 205 g (0.35 g per 100 g BM p < 0.05) in late March, owing to a decrease in both tissue mass and the wet mass of the contents of the organ. The mean absorptive surface of the omasum in Svalbard reindeer was 2300 cm2 in September and 2023 cm2 in April. In Norwegian reindeer, by contrast, the absorptive surface area decreased from 2201 cm2 in September to 1181 cm2 (p < 0.05) in late March. The marked seasonal decline of omasal tissue and contents in Norwegian reindeer probably results from intake of highly digestible forage plants, including lichens, in winter. Svalbard reindeer, a non-migratory sub-species, survive eating poor quality fibrous vascular plants in winter. The absence of any marked seasonal change in the mass, total absorptive surface area or filling of the omasum in Svalbard reindeer in winter despite a substantial decline in body mass presumably reflects their need to maintain maximum absorption of nutrients, including volatile fatty acids, when feeding on such poorly fermentable forage.  相似文献

To investigate the cutaneous distribution, localization, and persistence of imidacloprid in dogs, Advantage Topical Solution labeled with carbon 14 (14C) was topically applied as a single treatment at label rates and application pattern based on body weight to two adult beagles. One dog (8.5 kg) received 1.0 mL of the test solution at a single spot in the interscapular area (14 mg active ingredient/kg body weight); the second dog (12.3 kg) was treated with 2.5 mL of the test solution at four sites, each site receiving approximately 0.625 mL, along the dorsal thoracic and lumbar spine area (21 mg active ingredient/kg body weight). Samples of hair, skin surface residue, and skin taken from the application sites and/or distal body regions of the dogs at four intervals between 7 and 56 days after treatment demonstrated the migration of 14C radioactivity from the application sites to distal areas of the canine haircoat and skin. The 14C radioactivity concentrations in the skin biopsy and stratum corneum samples diminished steadily over 56 days after treatment. Microautoradiography of the skin showed focal concentrations of radioactivity in the superficial epidermis, hair follicles, and sebaceous glands. The presence of imidacloprid-derived radioactivity within hair follicles and sebaceous glands and on the skin surface is in good agreement with the reported efficacy of imidacloprid against fleas on dogs and cats for up to 1 month despite posttreatment bathing, shampooing, and/or swimming.  相似文献

The spatial distribution of chewing lice (Bovicola ovis) on their hosts was examined in Polypay and Columbia ewes initially artificially infested on the midside or the neck. Densities of lice were determined at 69 body sites in eight body regions at approximately monthly intervals for 2 years. In the second year, half of the ewes were mated and lice were counted at 26 body sites on the resulting lambs. Polypay ewes had higher densities of lice than Columbias at most inspections but there was little effect of infestation point or mating on either numbers or the distribution of lice. During periods of high louse numbers densities were generally greatest on the sides or the back. Densities on the head were also high at times and peaked later than overall louse densities. Shearing markedly reduced density but increased the proportion of lice found on the neck, belly and lowleg sites. The distribution of lice on the lambs was similar to that on the ewes except that fewer lice were found on the head. Comparisons of lice per part with the numbers of lice extracted from clipped patches indicated that a sheep with wool bearing area of 1 m2 and a mean count of one louse per 10 cm fleece parting carried approximately 2000 lice. At most times of the year inspections for sheep lice should be concentrated on the sides and back, but in recently shorn sheep greater attention should be paid to the lower neck and ventral regions. Implications of the observed distributions of lice for the efficacy of chemical treatments are discussed.  相似文献

Entire reproductive tracts were removed from seven normal healthy heifers and qualitative unbiased estimates made of endometrial gland volume density and glandular surface density. After examining approximately 55 microscopic fields of endometrium from each tract, a mean glandular surface density value of 10.2 mm(2)/mm(3) (CE 3.1%) was obtained. The stereological method was then employed in optimising the design of the main study. The endometrial height was measured for 17 healthy cycling heifers and 19 similar cows. Subsequently, unbiased estimates were made of intercaruncular endometrial gland volume per unit surface for all cattle were investigated; differences between heifers and cows generally, and the possible effect of the follicular and luteal phases of the oestrous cycle were compared. The mean surface area of glands per unit area of endometrium at the intercaruncular site in heifers and cows was approximately 18 mm(2)/mm(2) in the follicular phase and 26 mm(2)/mm(2) in the luteal phase, figures similar to the gland area found in women. The intercaruncular gland volume increased significantly, by about 30% during the luteal phase of the bovine oestrous cycle in heifers, from 0.01 to 0.13 per mm(3). The differences in endometrial anatomy between site of sampling and either follicular or luteal phases of the oestrous cycle were always more significant in heifers than cows. The endometrial thickness in cows was always greater than for heifers, irrespective of the site of sampling. It was concluded that the intercaruncular endometrium of cattle was far more active physiologically than recognised previously.  相似文献

A technique enabling simultaneous visualisation of skin and underlying bony structures in the walking horse was used to quantify skin displacements on the lateral surface of carpal, tarsal and fetlock joints. The technique employed implanted light-emitting-diodes (LEDs) for marking the bone, and self adhesive spot labels for marking the overlying skin. Photographic recordings were made. Skin displacement was measured in six Dutch Warmblood horses. Mean total displacements and mean displacement per degree of change of joint angle were calculated. Displacements at the level of the fetlock joints appeared to be generally small (less than or equal to 2 mm), but displacements up to 2 cm were measured in the distal tibia. Displacements of this magnitude are of importance for the interpretation of results obtained by modern gait analysis techniques.  相似文献

This retrospective study reports on the clinical presentation of equine atopic skin disease and evaluates response to treatment with allergen-specific immunotherapy (ASIT) based on intradermal testing and/or serum testing. Computerized medical records from January 1991 to December 2008 yielded 54 horses included in the study. Presenting clinical signs (CS) included urticaria (n=28), pruritus (n=8) or both (n=18). Forty-one of 54 horses received ASIT, and response to ASIT (n=32) was evaluated via telephone survey. Eighty-four per cent (n=27) of owners reported that ASIT reduced their horse's CS; 59% (n=19) were able to manage CS by ASIT alone. Three horses (9%) were managed with ASIT in combination with doxepin and discontinued use of corticosteroids. There was no statistical significance between type of test performed and reported success of ASIT (χ(2) analysis, P=0.53). Ninety-three per cent (n=30) of owners reported use of antipruritic medications prior to starting ASIT; 57% (n=17) of these owners reported discontinuing those medications due to success of ASIT. Adverse effects were limited to swelling at the injection site, seen in 16% (n=5). Seventy-five per cent (n=24) of owners elected to discontinue ASIT after 6 months to 8 years (mean 2.2 years): 15 due to resolution of CS, six due to persistent CS, two because the horse was sold, and one due to cost. Ten owners reported no recurrence of CS after discontinuing ASIT; five had recurrence within a median of 2 years of discontinuing ASIT (range 1-12 years). Allergen-specific immunotherapy is a safe and effective way to manage equine atopic skin disease.  相似文献

The dose of 2% chlorhexidine acetate (2CA; Nolvasan® Surgical Scrub; Fort Dodge Animal Health, Fort Dodge, IA, USA) for canine superficial pyoderma was evaluated. The first trial compared three doses (group 1, 57 mL/m2 body surface area; group 2, 29 mL/m2 body surface area; and group 3, 19 mL/m2 body surface area) in a randomized, double‐blind, controlled fashion. Twenty‐seven dogs with superficial pyoderma were treated with 2CA at the allocated doses every 2 days for 1 week. The owners and investigators subjectively evaluated the dogs, and investigators scored skin lesions, including erythema, papules/pustules, alopecia and scales, on a 0–4 scale. There were no significant differences in response between the treatment groups. The second trial established a practical dose‐measuring method for 2CA. Sixty‐eight owners were asked to apply 2CA on their palm in an amount corresponding to a Japanese ¥500 coin, 26.5 mm in diameter. This yielded an average dose of 0.90 ± 0.40 mL. Mathematically, the doses used in groups 1, 2 and 3 can be represented as one coin per approximately one‐, two‐ and three‐hand‐sized lesions, respectively. The results therefore suggest that owners instructed to apply one coin of the product per two‐hand‐sized areas of superficial pyoderma would use the range of doses evaluated in this trial.  相似文献

It was the aim of this study to investigate the regional variations in surface temperature and sweating rate and to visualize body thermal windows responsible for the dissipation of excess body heat in dromedary camels. This study was conducted on five dromedary camels with mean body weight of 450 ± 20.5 kg and 2 years of age. Sweating rate, skin and body surface temperature showed significant (P < 0.001) circadian variation together with the variation in ambient temperature. However, daily mean values of sweating rate, skin and body surface temperature measured on seven regions of the camel body did not significantly differ. The variation in body surface temperature compared to the variation in skin temperature was higher in the hump compared to the axillary and flank regions, indicating the significance of camel's fur in protecting the skin from daily variation in ambient temperature. Infrared thermography revealed that flank and axillary regions had lower thermal gradients at higher ambient temperature (Ta) and higher thermal gradients at lower Ta, which might indicate the working of flank and axillary regions as thermal windows dissipating heat during the night. Sweating rate showed moderate correlation to skin and body surface temperatures, which might indicate their working as potential thermal drivers of sweating in camels.  相似文献

The ruminal mucosa of 15 pygmy goats of different age (Z1 approximately 4-5 months, Z2 approximately 1 year, Z3 approximately 1.5-5 years) were studied gross-anatomically concerning their colour, clumping of papillae, fodder precipitations on the papillae, areas poor in papillae or devoid of them and the development of papillae. Purpose of this study was to determine the distribution of external taste buds of flower fish (Pseudophoxinus antalyae) on different body locations (lip, lateral, ventral and dorsal areas, dorsal-pelvic-pectoral-anal fins). In this species, it was found that the density of taste buds was greater on lip epithelium than that of lateral (between pectoral-anal, anal-caudal fins), ventral (between pelvic and anal fins) and dorsal (close to the head) locations. It was observed that the shape of taste bud changed depending upon the epithelium thickness and it was found that some of these structures protruded towards to the exterior of epithelium.  相似文献

Carnivores as top predators are commonly found in relatively low densities even in optimal habitats. Despite a lack of empirical studies, it could be suspected that long‐term low density could result in genetic depletion. The genetic structure of European polecat Mustela putorius natural populations was investigated by allozyme electrophoresis in five distinct areas. Density estimates significantly differed among sites from 0.17 to 0.83 individuals/km2 with an average of 0.56 individuals per km2, resulting in a scattered distribution. Genetic structure varied among distinct populations both in number of polymorphic loci and heterozygosity. Polecats from Brittany revealed a very low observed heterozygosity (HO = 0.028) whereas mean heterozygosity reached HO = 0.072 in Brière. That the lowest heterozygosity levels and highest inbreeding coefficient FIS were significantly associated with the lowest densities suggests that low densities may affect populations of carnivores. Both the loss of polymorphic loci and the reduction in heterozygosity rates suggest a density‐dependent effect and population density can be arguably regarded as a factor affecting genetic diversity in top carnivores.  相似文献

Aim of the present study was to determine the distribution and quantification of Malassezia yeasts on a wide number of cutaneous sites in atopic dogs by means of a semiquantitative swab technique. A possible relationship between the presence of clinical signs and the occurrence and population size of yeasts was attempted. Forty-one privately owned atopic dogs of different age and breed were sampled. Results were expressed as colony forming units per swab. Malassezia colonies obtained from each plate were counted, scored and typed. All dogs yielded Malassezia pachydermatis from at least one skin area. Yeast population mean size by site was 6.98 (S.D.=3.47) as compared to other body areas. The frequence of isolation was higher from interdigital areas (70.7%), ears (63.4%), nail folds (35.7%), mouth (33.3%), groin (30.9%), conjunctiva and axillae (23.8%), perineum and anus (19%), perianal glands (9.5%). Ears, anus, interdigital areas, perianal glands and groin yielded the largest mycotic amount. M. pachydermatis was the sole species of yeast to colonize canine skin in examined animals. No statistical correlation between the presence of cutaneous alterations and Malassezia isolation was detected. Highest scores were not exclusively found on affected areas, but also on lesion-free sites, demonstrating that atopic animals can be heavily colonized also in apparently healthy areas.  相似文献

Pyrethroids like permethrin have been used as topical formulations for their ectoparasiticidal effects since the 1970s. There are numerous efficacy studies in dogs and livestock animals that indicate a fast spread of pyrethroids after topical administration onto rather confined areas of the skin. Some studies correlate the efficacy against ticks, fleas or lice with concentrations of pyrethroids in hair and, less frequently, stratum corneum samples. It is often stated that lateral transport is responsible for the distribution of the pyrethroids over the body surface. With this review, we attempt to demonstrate evidence for lateral transport of pyrethroids after topical administration in dogs, cattle and sheep and to present data gaps that should be addressed in follow‐up studies.  相似文献

根据2008~2009年实地考察研究结果,着重就该区2种有蹄类动物的分布、种群数量以及有关问题作概要性探讨。调查研究结果表明:(1)老虎台盘羊分布区盘羊平均密度=8.49/8=1.06只/km^2,黑英山盘羊分布区盘羊平均密度=5.34/3=1.78只/km^2。整个分布区盘羊种群数量1 488只,其中,老虎台分布区种群数量=480×1.06=509只,黑英山分布区种群数量=550×1.78=979只。(2)老虎台北山羊分布区北山羊平均密度=14.59/5=2.92只/km^2,黑英山北山羊分布区北山羊平均密度=7.01/4=1.75只/km^2。整个分布区北山羊种群数量5 604只,其中,老虎台分布区种群数量=1 200×2.92=3 504只,黑英山分布区种群数量=1 200×1.75=2 100只。以上数据为该区2种野生有蹄类动物开展狩猎与保护提供了对策性依据。  相似文献

This study was intended to determine the number and regional distribution of photoreceptor cells and different colored oil droplets in the retina of the Mallard Duck (Anas platyrhynchos var. domesticus). To estimate the number and density of photoreceptor cells, adult ducks were killed and both eyes were enucleated under deep anesthesia to prepare Nissl‐stained retinal whole‐mount samples. Different colored oil droplets were counted from color microphotographs of the freshly prepared retina. The mean number of retinal photoreceptors was approximately 6 308 828 ± 521 927, with a peak density of 33 573/mm2 in the central retina. The density was similar in the nasal, temporal, ventral and dorsal areas of the retina. Five types of oil droplets were identified on the basis of color: red, orange, greenish‐yellow, yellow and clear. The mean density of oil droplets was highest in the central retina (17 639/mm2) and gradually declined towards the nasal, temporal, ventral and dorsal areas. The size of oil droplets gradually increased with retinal eccentricity and varied even within an area. The greenish‐yellow oil droplets were most abundant across the retina. Taken together, these results demonstrate the differential retinal distribution of photoreceptor cells and oil droplets in duck retina. We conclude that the area of high photoreceptor cell density, which is matched by high neuron densities of the ganglion cell layer, corresponds to the site of acute vision in duck retina.  相似文献

Pharmacokinetic parameters of parathion were studied in pigs after intravenous (i.v,) and dermal administration of unlabelled and ‘“C-parathion. Plasma concentration-time data were subjected to non-compartmental analysis. Intravenous injection studies showed a mean residence time (MRT) of 2.15 h, a body clearance (ClB) of 4.4 l/kg/h and a volume of distribution (Vss) of 9.8 l/kg. Dermal application led to a mean absorption time (MAT) of 78 h. and a bioavailability of 9.9%. Plasma levels of 14C-parathion (parathion + metabolites) were much higher and more persistent than those of parathion itself. After i.v. administration, recovery of 14C-parathion from urine plus faeces was almost 100% within 3 d, while it was less than 20% after dermal application. Ten days after dermal application high I4C concentrations remained in the back skin, i.e. the application area. In skin samples from areas where contamination from the application area could not have occurred, the 14C-parathion concentration was as low as 2 μg/g. It is concluded that in view of the low dermal bioavailability for organophosphorus insecticides it is unlikely that pour-on preparations containing these insecticides reach the ectoparasites through absorption and systemic distribution, but rather that this happens after spreading on the surface of the skin.  相似文献
