Age, growth, maturity, and sex changes of the monogrammed monocle bream Scolopsis monogramma were estimated from ca. 500 specimens collected at Okinawa-jima Island in southern Japan. Age was determined from sectioned otoliths: maximum ages were 10 years for females and 9 years for males. Parameters for von Bertalanffy growth functions were L t  = 206.6{1 ? exp[?0.68(t + 0.81)]} (n = 337) for females and L t  = 244.4{1 ? exp[?0.93(t + 0.32)]} (n = 130) for males. The spawning season was estimated to last from June to July, with a peak in July. The standard length (SL) and age at 50 % maturity for females were estimated as 186.4 mm SL and 3.3 years, respectively. Intersex individuals appeared from 159.6 to 237.5 mm SL (n = 16) in fish between 1 and six years old, with the highest frequencies occurring at 170 mm SL and 2 years old. Hence, almost all S. monogramma specimens found at Okinawa-jima Island exhibited pre-maturational sex change, although some may have been protogynous hermaphrodites. Biological characteristics such as age at growth, maturation, and spawning season are valuable factors that can inform the resource management of local fisheries.  相似文献

Growth and reproductive characteristics of jack mackerel Trachurus japonicus collected in the East China Sea were determined based on otolith readings and gonad histology, respectively. Translucent and opaque zones on sectioned otoliths were identified and opaque rings counted. Von Bertalanffy growth parameters did not significantly differ between males and females, and the combined growth curve was: L t  = 401{1 ? exp[?0.275 (t + 1.149)]} (0.8 < t < 6.9), where L t is fork length (mm) at age t. The calculated lengths at age 1 in our study were larger than those reported 50 years ago from the East China Sea. The spawning period was evaluated to be from December to June, but primarily from February to May, based on the monthly changes in the gonadosomatic index and histological observations. The minimum size and age at first maturity were smaller and younger, respectively, than those reported in previous studies.  相似文献

The age and growth of two Nematalosa species around Okinawa Island were examined using sectioned otoliths collected from September 2003 to April 2006. Monthly changes in the frequency of the appearance of a translucent band on the outer margin of the otoliths indicated that ring formation occurred once a year from January to July for Nematalosa come and from January to March for Nematalosa japonica. The von Bertalanffy growth equations for both species were as follows: N. come: L t  = 365.5{1 − exp[−0.111 × (t + 0.288)]} for females and L t  = 214.7{1 − exp[−0.700 × (t – 1.110)]} for males; N. japonica: L t  = 205.1{1 − exp[−1.068 × (t − 1.180)]} for females and L t  = 195.5 {1 − exp[−1.293 × (t − 1.269)]} for males. The maximum ages observed for N. come and N. japonica were 11 and 6 years old, respectively. The growth of these species was characterized by the slow growth of N. come over many years, resulting in a larger size than N. japonica.  相似文献

This study details the growth and maturation processes of Pacific saury Cololabis saira from eggs to first spawning under laboratory conditions. They were reared at 20°C, and fed almost to satiation every day. There was no significant difference in the knob length (KnL) between males and females, and so data for both sexes were combined in the following Gompertz growth formula: KnL t  = 277.1 exp[?exp(?0.015 (t ? 83.8))]. The first spawning was observed 243 days after hatching (DAH). At the beginning of spawning, when the mean KnL was about 250 mm, only several hundred eggs were spawned at most. The spawning continued, and the number of spawned eggs increased notably after 260 DAH. Correlation and stepwise multiple regression analysis of the gonad somatic index (GSI) of Pacific saury versus KnL, CF, and DAH revealed that only DAH (R = 0.88 and 0.72 for males and females, respectively) was significantly correlated with GSI of Pacific saury (P < 0.001). This result suggests that DAH is one of the most influential factors for maturation in this species.  相似文献

We studied the age and growth of the lizardfish Saurida elongata using ground thin sections of otoliths (sagittae) from specimens collected in the Tsushima/Korea Strait between May 1999 and June 2001. A total of 695 individuals with fork lengths (FL) ranging from 189 to 478 mm were examined. The frequency of translucent zone occurrence at the outer margin of the otoliths indicated that translucent zones formed once a year between November and February. Most of the males examined were estimated to be 2–7 years old and the females, 3–9 years old. The maximum estimated age of a male specimen was 10 years and that of a female, 11 years. The estimated von Bertalanffy growth curves were FL t  = 451{1 − exp[−0.172(t + 2.50)]} and FL t  = 515{1 − exp[−0.151(t + 2.47)]} for males and females, respectively. At all ages, the FL at a specific age for females was greater than that for males, suggesting that females of this species grow faster than males.  相似文献

Small abalone Haliotis diversicolor (Reeve, 1846) is one of the smallest commercial abalone in the world. The successful application of artificial propagation and mass seed production techniques since the 1980s have resulted in the establishment of well-developed culture systems for small abalone in Taiwan. In the study reported here, we estimated the growth of a population of small abalone after a decade in a closed culture system and its growth characteristics with those of wild populations reported in previous studies. The von Bertalanffy growth equations of the shell length (L) and body weight (W) of cultured abalone were L t  = 71.73 (1 ? e?0.84 (t?0.16)) and W t  = 47.70 (1 ? e?0.84 (t?0.16))3.180, respectively. The instantaneous rate of change for weight had an inflection point at the age of 1.54 years, indicating that cultured abalones reach their apex of body growth around this age. Compared with the wild populations, the cultured population exhibits a significantly smaller maximal shell length (L ) and a significantly larger growth coefficient (k). Based on our results, it appears that the artificial culture of generations of small albalone for one decade or more in a closed system could be one of the major factors causing the observed minimization of size in the cultured abalone; this may be an adaptation in which growth is traded off for the larger k.  相似文献

A 60-day feeding trial was conducted to study the effect of dietary microbial levan on growth performance and metabolic responses of Cyprinus carpio fry exposed to sublethal dose (1/10th LC50) of fipronil [(±)-5-amino-1-(2,6-dichloro-α,α,α-trifluoro-p-tolyl)-4-trifluoromethylsulfinylpyrazole-3-carbonitrile]. Two hundred and twenty five fry were randomly distributed in five treatments in triplicates. Four purified diets were prepared with graded levels of microbial levan. Five different treatment groups were levan control L0P0 (basal feed + 0 % levan without exposure to pesticide); pesticide control L0P1 (basal feed + 0 % levan with exposure to pesticide); L0.25P1 (basal feed + 0.25 % levan with exposure to pesticide); L0.50P1 (basal feed + 0.50 % levan with exposure to pesticide); and L0.75P1 (basal feed + 0.75 % levan with exposure to pesticide). Weight gain% and specific growth rate were significantly higher (p < 0.05) in levan fed groups compared to their non-levan fed counterpart. Highest (p < 0.05) content of ascorbic acid in muscle, liver and brain tissues was observed with higher level of dietary levan. Glucose-6-phosphate dehydrogenase activity decreased with the increasing level of dietary levan in the liver and muscle. Aspartate aminotransferase activity exhibited a second order polynomial relationship with the dietary levan, both in liver (Y = ?1.001x 2 + 5.366x + 5.812, r 2 = 0.887) and muscle (Y = ?0.566x 2 + 2.833x + 6.506, r 2 = 0.858) while alanine aminotransferase activity showed third order polynomial relationship both in liver (Y = 1.195x 3 ? 12.30x 2 + 35.23x + 9.874, r 2 = 0.879) and muscle (Y = 0.527x 3 ? 8.429x 2 + 31.80x + 8.718, r 2 = 0.990). Highest (p < 0.05) superoxide dismutase activity in gill was observed in the group fed with 0.75 % levan supplemented diet. Overall results indicated that dietary microbial levan at 0.75 % in C. carpio fry ameliorated the negative effects of fipronil and augmented the growth.  相似文献

ABSTRACT:   The age, growth and maturation of the redbelly tilapia Tilapia zillii introduced into the Haebaru Reservoir on Okinawa-jima Island were studied using 2197 specimens ranging from 7.3 to 168.0 mm standard length (SL). The spawning season was estimated to be from April to August, with a peak in April and May. The first maturation sizes of females and males were estimated to be 38.1 and 33.0 mm SL, respectively. The opaque zones in otoliths that form annually were found to correlate with the spawning season. Maximum ages of females and males were 7 and 6 years, respectively. The von Bertalanffy growth formulae were expressed as: L t  = 99{1 − exp[−0.67( t  + 0.09)]} for females and L t  = 155{1 − exp [−0.36( t  + 0.12)]} for males. Males grew to be larger than females from the first year onward. Populations of this species are characterized by early maturation life history parameters and are thought to adapt and become established quickly after being released into new water systems. Furthermore, extermination activity in winter is thought to be an effective strategy before the newly recruited fish begin breeding in the warmer months.  相似文献

Counting of the growth layers in the earplugs is the most accepted technique for determining chronological age of Antarctic minke whales; however, unreadable growth layers form in some individuals, especially in young animals. In this study, aspartic acid racemization (AAR) technique was developed for estimating ages in this species with the aim of complementing the age estimated using earplugs. To validate the technique and to determine the specific coefficients for age estimation, the ratio of d and l-enantiomers of aspartic acid (Asp D/L) in lens of 18 whales and 20 fetuses were analyzed and compared with earplug-based age estimates. The equation for age estimation by AAR in this species was as follows: Loge{[1 + (Asp D/L)act]/[1 ? (Asp D/L)act]} = 2.30 × 10?3 × earplug age (year) + 0.0201 (p < 0.001, r 2  = 0.918). There is a strong correlation between the age estimates by AAR and earplugs. This study was successful in developing the AAR technique for the Antarctic minke whale, and the application of this technique can complement the age estimation of this species based on earplug readings, especially for young animals with unreadable earplugs.  相似文献

This study tested the feasibility of a low-cost seaweed biofiltration system for pond-based aquaculture through an indoor-integrated fish-seaweed culture experiment using weekly nutrient supply regime and different seaweed stocking densities. The culture experiment was conducted in glass aquaria that were stocked with Gracilariopsis bailiniae at 3 densities (low = 0.5 kg m?2, middle = 2 kg m?2 and high = 3.5 kg m?2) and provided either with effluents from intensive milkfish (Chanos chanos) culture or with effluent-free seawater (control) as nutrient source. Stocking density was used as a factor in optimizing nutrient availability for growth and nutrient removal under such low water exchange conditions. Our results showed that G. bailiniae cultivated in milkfish effluents had higher growth, biomass and nitrogen yields than those cultivated in effluent-free seawater. Among the different stocking densities tested, highest growth rate (1.03 % day?1) was obtained in the middle density. Increasing biomass and nitrogen yields were also obtained at this density until the end of the culture period. Poorer growth rates at low and high stocking densities were attributed to light limitation from phytoplankton and self-shading, respectively. Due to seaweed treatment, average outflow concentration of NH4 + was reduced from half of its pretreated level. This study showed that a weekly effluent supply at 2 kg m?2 seaweed stocking density can sustainably support the growth of G. bailiniae as long as the dissolved nutrients are present at high levels.  相似文献

A total of 518 Gerres sp. were collected around Okinawa Island, Japan, from November 2002 to July 2005, with monthly sampling where the standard length of females (n=218) were 56.2–147.1 mm, and males (n=149) were 62.2–139.4 mm. The maximum ages observed for females were 5+ years and males were 4+ years, estimated by transverse sectioned sagittal otoliths. Mean marginal increment indicated that opaque rings were formed once a year during April to July. The standard length (SL; mm) — body wet weight (BW; g) relationships were described as BW=(3.26×10−5) SL2.97 and BW=(3.13×10−5) SL 2.98 for females and males, respectively, and the standard length at age described by von Bertalanffy growth function for females, L t=137.1(1−e−0.80[t+0.80]) and males, L t=127.3(1−e−0.82[t+0.93]).  相似文献

To investigate the effects of starvation and acclimation temperature on the escape ability of juvenile rose bitterling (Rhodeus ocellatus), we measured the fast-start escape and constant acceleration swimming performance of fish fasted for 0 (control), 1 and 2 weeks and half-lethal periods (6 or 4 weeks) at two temperatures (15 and 25 °C). Fish acclimated at a high temperature exhibited shorter response latency (R), higher maximum linear velocity (V max) and longer escape distance during escape movement (D 120ms) than those at the low temperature. Starvation resulted in a significant decrease in V max and D 120ms at either low or high temperature and a significant increase in R at only the high temperature in the half-lethal period groups (P < 0.05). The relationship between V max (Y, m s?1) and starvation time (X, week) was Y 15 = ?0.062X + 1.568 (r = ?0.665, n = 36, P < 0.001) at low temperature and Y 25 = ?0.091X + 1.755 (r = ?0.391, n = 40, P = 0.013) at high temperature. The relationship between U cat (Y, cm s?1) and starvation time (X, week) was Y 15 = ?1.649X + 55.418 (r = ?0.398, n = 34, P = 0.020) at low temperature and Y 25 = ?4.917X + 62.916 (r = ?0.793, n = 33, P < 0.001) at high temperature. The slopes of equations showed a significant difference between low and high temperature (F 1,63 = 9.688, P = 0.003), which may be due to the different energy substrate utilization when faced with food deprivation at different temperatures.  相似文献

Age and growth during immature stages of the mangrove red snapper Lutjanus argentimaculatus were examined using 129 sectioned otoliths of fish collected in rivers and coastal areas around Ishigaki Island. Monthly changes in the marginal growth index indicated that ring marks (inner edge of opaque zone) are formed once a year around May. Estimated ages of the sampled fish ranged from 0.2 to 4.5 years. The proportion of mangrove red snappers collected in each sampling set in the rivers was associated with age, namely, the older the fish, the smaller the proportion. This result suggests that the mangrove red snapper gradually moves from the river habitat to coastal areas with increasing age between 1 and 3 years. The relationship between standard length (Y; cm) and age (X; year) was expressed by the linear regression Y = 6.30X + 5.41. Both the somatic and otolith growth of age-one and age-two fish collected in coastal areas were faster than those of fish collected in rivers, suggesting that individuals with fast growth leave the rivers earlier than those with slow growth. Whereas the basic growth pattern obtained in this study is similar to that of the mangrove red snapper in waters around Great Barrier Reef, Australia, there is a clear difference in length of time spent in rivers between the two populations, probably associated with the difference in the scale of the rivers used as nursery grounds.  相似文献

The study was conducted to evaluate the effect of dietary lipid levels on growth, liver oxidative stress, and serum metabolites of juvenile hybrid snakehead (Channa argus × Channa maculata). Five isonitrogenous (crude protein 420 g kg?1) practical diets containing 58, 87, 115, 144, and 173 g kg?1 crude lipid (named L58, L87, L115, L144, and L173, respectively) were fed to triplicate groups of 30 fish (mean initial weight 24 g) for 8 weeks. The results showed that the final body weight (58.68–78.81 g), specific growth rate (1.41–1.75 % day?1), and protein efficiency ratio (1.66–2.64) increased significantly with the increasing dietary lipid levels. Liver lipid contents (71.65–101.80 g kg?1) and crude lipid (52.10–83.63 g kg?1) of whole body increased with increasing dietary lipid levels and reached the highest values in fish of L173. Fish of L173 showed lower alkaline phosphatase (23.81 King Unit gprot?1) and catalase activities (4.44 U mgprot?1) but higher malondialdehyde content (0.69 nmol mgprot?1) in liver than the other groups. Higher alanine transaminase activity (8.20 U L?1), aspartate transaminase activity (63.65 U L?1), and triglyceride (0.29 mmol L?1) in serum were observed in fish of L173 compared to the other treatments. Fish of L144 showed higher superoxide dismutase activity and glutathione peroxidase activities in liver than that of fish fed diet L58. Fish fed diet L58 showed lower total cholesterol (3.61 mmol L?1), high-density lipoprotein cholesterol (1.39 mmol L?1), and low-density lipoprotein cholesterol (0.46 mmol L?1) in serum. These results suggested that juvenile snakehead (Channa argus × Channa maculata) achieved good growth performance with dietary lipid level 173 g kg?1. Diet with 143 g kg?1 lipid was more conductive to liver health. The appropriate dietary lipid supplementation needs to be determined in further studies.  相似文献

We investigated the growth of juvenile common snook (Centropomus undecimalis) reared at 25°C and 28°C and salinities of 0.3, 15, and 32 g L?1. Total length, weight, RNA/DNA, and protein/DNA ratios were determined after 90 days of experiment. Higher growth was observed at 28ºC compared with 25°C, at the same salinity. At 28°C and 15 g L?1 salinity, the weight (25.14 g) of juveniles was twice that of the juveniles reared at the lower temperature. At different salinities, only higher temperature affected growth, with higher weight values obtained at 15 g L?1 in comparison with 0.3 and 32 g L?1. Length was similar at 0.3 and 15 g L?1. The RNA/DNA ratio was greater in juveniles reared at a salinity of 15 g L?1 when compared with 0.3 and 32 g L?1. This study shows that the combination of higher temperature and intermediate salinity promotes better growth of common snook juveniles.  相似文献

The growth and reproductive characteristics of dolphinfish Coryphaena hippurus collected in the waters off western Kyushu from May 2008 to April 2011 were determined based on scale and otolith readings and gonad histological examinations, respectively. Based on annual increments in scales and daily increments in sagittal otoliths, the von Bertalanffy growth curves in male and females were determined as $ FL_{t} = 1049[1 - \exp \{ - 0.835(t + 6.975 \times 10^{ - 14} )\} ] $ and $ FL_{t} = 938[1 - \exp \{ - 1.029(t + 6.975 \times 10^{ - 14} )\} ] $ , respectively, where FL t is the mean fork length (mm) at age t. The spawning period was found to last from June to August for dolphinfish, based on an examination of the monthly changes in the gonadosomatic index and histological observations. Therefore, based on the relationship between the fork length and the developmental stage of the testes or ovaries, male and female dolphinfish were found to reach sexual maturity by the following spawning season after hatching in the northern East China Sea.  相似文献

The anesthetic activities of the essential oils (EOs) of Hesperozygis ringens (EOHR) and Lippia alba (EOLA) and their effects in silver catfish (Rhamdia quelen) after anesthesia and recovery were investigated. Fish (32.19 ± 1.24 g) were submitted to one of the following treatments for each EO: basal group, control, or anesthesia (150, 300, or 450 μL L?1 EO). After that the anesthesia was induced or simulated and the biometric measurements were completed, fish were transferred to anesthetic-free aquaria to allow for recovery. Fish were sampled at 0, 15, 30, 60, and 240 min after recovery. At time 0 of recovery, the ventilatory rate was lower in the groups anesthetized with either EO. In comparison with the basal group, control fish showed an increase in plasma glucose, aspartate aminotransferase (AST), and Na+ levels and a reduction in Na+/K+-ATPase activity at 0 min of recovery. Plasma levels of ammonia and Na+ were lower in the fish anesthetized with EOLA (450 μL L?1) and EOHR (all concentrations), respectively, than in the control fish. Additionally, lactate, AST, alanine aminotransferase, K+ plasma levels, and gill Na+/K+-ATPase and H+-ATPase activities were higher in the fish anesthetized with either EOHR or EOLA than in the control fish. The EOs promoted slight changes in silver catfish that enabled both an adaptive response and the recovery of most of the measured parameters after 240 min regardless of concentration or EO that was used. These findings support the use of EOHR and EOLA as anesthetics for fish.  相似文献

This study evaluated whether anesthesia with essential oil (EO) of Lippia alba (300 mg L?1 for 4 min) prior to electronarcosis (128 V m?1 × 300 Hz for 5 s) or hypothermia (ice/water slurry) could delay fish spoilage during chilled storage of whole fish. Silver catfish (Rhamdia quelen) were subjected to two different pre-stunning treatments (water or anesthesia with EO of L. alba) followed by two different stunning procedures (hypothermia or electrical stunning), yielding four groups (n = 32/group): water (control) + hypothermia, water (control) + electrical stunning, EO of L. alba + hypothermia, and EO of L. alba + electrical stunning. After stunning, fish were slaughtered by percussion and stored in ice. Preslaughter anesthesia with the EO of L. alba extended fish shelf life by delaying the loss of freshness (nucleotide degradation), growth of Enterobacteriaceae, and fish deterioration (sensory evaluation). Such preservative effect was most remarkable for fish that were subsequently submitted to electrical stunning, as they had the lowest demerit scores and greatest shelf life in the sensory evaluation. Our results showed that preslaughter anesthesia with EO of L. alba followed by electrical stunning can delay the loss of freshness and extend fish shelf life during chilled storage.  相似文献
