ObjectiveTo determine the effects of midazolam on the minimum anesthetic concentration (MAC) reduction of end-tidal isoflurane concentration (Fe′Iso) measured using an electrical stimulus in Quaker parrots (Myiopsitta monachus).Study designRandomized crossover experimental study.AnimalsA group of six adult Quaker parrots, weighing 98–124 g.MethodsBirds were anesthetized with isoflurane in oxygen delivered by mask, then tracheally intubated and mechanically ventilated. Three treatments were applied with a 4 day interval between anesthetic events. Each anesthetized bird was administered midazolam (1 mg kg−1; treatment MID1), midazolam (2 mg kg−1; treatment MID2) or electrolyte solution (control) intramuscularly. The treatments were administered using a replicated Latin square design and the observers were blinded. Based on a pilot bird, the starting Fe′Iso was 1.8%. After equilibration for 10 minutes, a supramaximal stimulus was delivered using an electrical current (20 V and 50 Hz for 10 ms) and birds were observed for non-reflex movement. The Fe′Iso was titrated by 0.1% until a crossover event was observed. The MAC was estimated using logistic regression.ResultsThe MAC of isoflurane (MACISO) was estimated at 2.52% [95% confidence interval (CI), 2.19–2.85] with a range of 1.85–2.65%. MACISO in MID1 was 2.04% (95% CI, 1.71–2.37) and in MID2 was 1.81% (95% CI, 1.48–2.14); reductions in MACISO from control of 19% (p = 0.001) and 28% (p < 0.001), respectively. Heart rate, temperature, sex and anesthetic time were not different among treatments.ConclusionsMidazolam (1–2 mg kg−1) intramuscularly resulted in a significant isoflurane-sparing effect in response to a noxious stimulus in Quaker parrots without observable adverse effects.Clinical relevanceMidazolam can be used as part of a balanced anesthetic approach using isoflurane in Quaker parrots, and potentially in other psittacine species.  相似文献

To evaluate potential factors related to avian atherosclerosis, plasma cholesterol and triglyceride values were measured in 35 apparently healthy captive monk parakeets (Myiopsitta monachus). Birds were categorized as healthy or at risk based on body condition score and weight and were also evaluated based on their aviary environmental conditions. Plasma cholesterol mean was 8.008 mmol/L (range: 4.655 to 20.33 mmol/L) or 309.65 mg/dl (range: 180 to 786 mg/dl) for all birds sampled. Plasma triglyceride mean for all birds sampled was 4.364 mmol/L (range: 0.960 to 44.62 mmol/L) or 386.54 mg/dl (range: 85 to 3952 mg/dl). Thirty plasma samples were evaluated through density gradient ultracentrifugation lipid profiling techniques used to examine risk of cardiovascular disease in humans. The resultant lipid density profile graph was determined from the hydrated densities of the following lipids: triglyceride-rich lipoproteins, low-density lipoproteins (LDL) and subfractions, and high-density lipoproteins and subfractions. When analyzed using linear discriminant analysis, lipid profiles of triglyceride-rich lipoproteins, LDL1, LDL2, and high-density lipoprotein 2b subfractions were increased (P < 0.05) in at-risk monk parakeets when compared with healthy cohorts. Gender and diet had no apparent effect on plasma cholesterol or triglyceride concentrations. Cholesterol and triglyceride concentrations and lipoprotein density profiles from captive monk parakeets, a species known to be affected by atherosclerosis, may prove useful as markers for use in future investigation of atherosclerosis in birds. However, the consequence of increased plasma lipid concentrations and changes of lipoprotein profiles on avian health requires additional investigation.  相似文献

We evaluated the efficacy of acyclovir against experimentally induced herpesvirus infection (Pacheco's parrot disease) in Quaker parakeets. Thirty-two of 40 birds were challenge-exposed with 0.1 ml of a suspension of herpesvirus (10(4) median cell culture infective doses [CCID50]) given IM. Treatment with acyclovir was started 24 hours later and was continued for 7 days. The birds were allotted to 5 groups of 8 birds each. There was a considerable difference in mortality between groups 1-5. Of 8 bird in each group, 6 died in group 1 (control), 1 died in group 2 (gavage), 3 died in group 3 (low dose, IM), 4 died in group 4 (high dose, IM), and none died in group 5 (contact controls). There was a significant (P = 0.023) difference in mortality between groups 1 and 2, thus the oral form of acyclovir administered by gavage was the most efficacious therapeutic regimen. Clinical signs and death occurred after discontinuation of acyclovir in groups 2 and 3, whereas the mean time of death for the control group was 6 days after challenge exposure. Herpesvirus was recovered by inoculation of chick embryo cell culture with pooled tissue suspensions from all birds that died. Histologic evidence of herpesvirus infection was found in most birds that died, with the control group having the most severe lesions. Surviving Quaker parakeets were transferred to cages with seronegative Quaker parakeets with no known exposure to herpesvirus. There have been no deaths attributable to herpesvirus infection in a period exceeding 2 years.  相似文献

BackgroundFeather damaging behavior (feather picking) is a common malady of captive parrots. Diagnosis is challenging as a primary disadvantage to clinicians faced with diagnosis of parrot skin disease remains the lack of normative data for the healthy parrot epidermal microbiology. The objective of this pilot study was to establish bacterial and fungal cutaneous microbiota baselines for quaker parrots with and without feather loss.MethodsHealthy quaker parrots (Myiopsitta monachus n = 12) with intact feathers were compared to 12 quaker parrots with evidence of feather loss via next-generation DNA sequencing of bacteria and fungus swabbed from skin.ResultsOf 351 bacterial and 97 fungal species identified, no statistical differences occurred in bacteria or fungal alpha-diversity or beta-diversity based on age, sex, or feather loss. However, enclosure affected bacterial beta-diversity. The most abundant bacterial species for fully feathered quaker parrots were Exiguobacterium indicum, Sphingomonas yabuuchiae, and Corynebacterium spp.,. Fragaria/Populus euphratica, S. yabuuchiae, and E. indicum for quaker parrots with feather loss. Lactobacillales, Acinetobacter, Kocuria sp., and Streptococcus epidermidis were significantly enriched in fully feathered quaker parrots, while Streptococcaceae, Methylobacterium, Clostridiales, Nocardioidaceae, Nesterenkonia, and Actinomycetospora were significantly enriched in quaker parrots with feather loss. Both groups had Cladosporium halotolerans/sphaerospermum as the predominant fungus, while Capnodiales was significantly enriched in quaker parrots with feather loss. Conclusions and clinical relevanceUse of next generation microbial sequencing as a preliminary diagnostic tool of bacterial and fungal communities of captive birds allows veterinarians to confirm cytologic diagnoses and circumvent the limitations of culture testing. Diagnostic implications include the potential transmission of pathogenic bacteria and/or fungi and pathogen resistance between cohoused birds.  相似文献

The effect of α‐linolenic acid from a flaxseed (FLX)‐enriched diet on plasma lipid and fatty acid metabolism and possible atherosclerosis risk factors was studied in Monk parrots (Myiopsitta monachus). Twenty‐four Monk parrots were randomly assigned to diets containing either 10% ground SUNs or 10% ground FLXs. Feed intake was calculated daily. Blood samples, body condition scores and body weights were obtained at ?5 weeks, day 0, 7, 14, 28, 42 and 70. Plasma samples were analysed for total cholesterol, free cholesterol, triacylglycerols and lipoproteins. Phospholipid subfraction fatty acid profiles were determined. By day 70, the FLX group had significantly higher plasma phospholipid fatty acids including 18:3n‐3 (α‐linolenic acid), 20:5n‐3 (eicosapentaenoic acid) and 22:6n‐3 (docosahexaenoic acid). The sunflower group had significantly higher plasma phospholipid levels of 20:4n‐6 (arachidonic acid). By day 70, the high‐density lipoprotein (HDL) peak shifted resulting in significantly different HDL peak densities between the two experimental groups (1.097 g/ml FLX group and 1.095 g/ml SUN group, p = 0.028). The plasma fatty acid results indicate that Monk parrots can readily convert α‐linolenic acid to the long‐chain omega‐3 derivatives including docosahexaenoic acid and reduce 20:4n‐6 accumulation in plasma phospholipids. The reason for a shift in the HDL peak density is unknown at this time.  相似文献

A papova-like virus infection of splendid parakeets (Neophema splendida)   总被引:2,自引:0,他引:2
The lesions associated with a papova-like virus infection in two splendid parakeets (Neophema splendida) are described. The most obvious microscopic lesion in both birds was enlargement of renal medullary collecting-duct epithelial cells. The nuclei of these cells were also enlarged, pleomorphic, and often bizarre, and intranuclear and intracytoplasmic virus-like particles (48 nm in diameter) were demonstrated within them. One bird also had a hepatopathy characterized by hepatocyte enlargement and nuclear pleomorphism.  相似文献

The gross and histological lesions of a protozoan infection, possibly caused by Leucocytozoon, in parakeets (genera Neophema and Cyanoramphus), budgerigars (Melopsittacus undulatus) and a wild buzzard (Buteo buteo) are described. The infection appears not to have been identified before in budgerigars in Great Britain, and in its chronic form resulted in vomiting and wasting. The possible identity of the parasite and the epidemiological factors are considered.  相似文献

This study aimed to determine the minimum anesthetic concentration (MAC) and dose-related cardiovascular effects of isoflurane during controlled ventilation in cinereous vultures (Aegypius monachus). The MAC was determined for 10 cinereous vultures as the midpoint between the end-tidal isoflurane concentration that allows gross purposeful movement and that which prevents the movement in response to clamping a pedal digit. Immediately after the MAC was determined, the cardiovascular effects of isoflurane at 1.0, 1.5, and 2.0 times the MAC were investigated in seven of the 10 birds. The MAC of isoflurane for 10 cinereous vultures during controlled ventilation was 1.06 +/- 0.07% (mean +/- SD). When the isoflurane concentration was increased to 1.5 and 2.0 times the MAC, there was significant dose-dependent decrease in the arterial blood pressure. However, the heart rate did not change over a range of 1.0 to 2.0 times the MAC.  相似文献

The aim of this study is to describe radiographic, ultrasonographic, and computed tomographic appearance of normal cinereous vulture’s eye and to determine normal biometric values of intraocular structures. Twenty-six eyes of thirteen healthy cinereous vultures were examined. Under general anesthesia with isoflurane, ultrasonography (US), computed tomography (CT) and skull radiography were performed. Differences between both eyes as well as between US and CT measurements were investigated and correlation of measurements between both eyes as well as correlation between CT and US measurements of the various ocular structures were calculated. Most of paired data did not show any significant differences between both eyes and the CT and US measurements, while there were significant differences (P<0.05) between CT and US measurements of depth of both vitreous and anterior chambers, and axial length of the lens in right eyes. There was also a significant difference (P<0.05) between both eyes in depth of vitreous measured by CT. All the measurements had strong correlations between both eyes and between US and CT. In conclusion, ocular imaging techniques provided useful data of biometry and morphology, showing good correlation between CT and US in cinereous vulture’s eye. Especially, when ophthalmoscopic examinations would not be available due to opaque anterior segment, imaging techniques could be essential for diagnosing and managing of the eye.  相似文献

Qiao, G.-L., Fung, K.-F. Pharmacokinetic-pharmacodynamic modelling of meperidine in goats (I): pharmacokinetics. J. vet. Pharmacol. Therap. 16 , 426–437. Plasma and cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) pharmacokinetics of meperidine were investigated after intramuscular (i.m.) or intravenous (i.v.) administration at a dose of 5 mg/kg in adult goats. After i.m. dosing, the plasma profile was best described by a one-compartment open model. In healthy (n = 16) and postoperative (n = 16) goats, the parameters were, respectively: /max 8.3 ± 3.9 and 9.2 ± 5.5 min, Vd 2.763 ±1.231 and 3.929 ±2.101 1/kg, Clb 0.125 ± 0.036 and 0.087 ± 0.025 1/kg/min, Kc 0.0563 ± 0.0358 and 0.0271 ± 0.0136 min-1. The plasma profile was best fitted by a two-compartment open model following i.v. injection. In this case, the parameters for healthy (n= 7) and post-operative (n= 13) goats were, respectively: Vd 5.212 ± 1.992 and 5.085 ± 2.288 1/kg, Clb 0.096 ± 0.028 and 0.075 ± 0.026 1/kg/min, P 0.0211 ± 0.0093 and 0.0160 ± 0.0052 min.-1. There were, however, a few individuals with a prolonged elimination phase. Bioavailability of i.m. meperidine was 66.5 ± 15.8% in healthy (n= 6) goats, but much higher in postoperative (n = 10) ones at 94.6 ± 30.0%. Meperidine diffused into and out of CSF according to a first-order rate process. The time-course of CSF drug concentration was simulated by a biexponential function. CSF kinetic parameters of i.m. meperidine for healthy (n = 7) and postoperative (n = 13) goats were: elimination rate constant (Kei) 0.0269 ± 0.0131 and 0.0305 ± 0.0177 min“1, peak CSF concentration time (Tnaxl) 15.9 ± 5.0 and 17.0 ± 6.9 min. For the i.v. dosed healthy (n = 6) and postoperative (n = 8) animals, Kel was 0.0408 ± 0.0107, 0.0414 ± 0.0123 min-1 and 7maxt was 10.0 ± 5.0 and 7.7 ± 2.5 min, respectively. It was demonstrated that an obviously lower peak concentration can be reached significantly later in CSF than in plasma, and the kinetic behaviour of meperidine in plasma is different from that in the CSF, indicating meperidine analgesia might not be predicted by simple extrapolation from the kinetic data.  相似文献

Two morbilliviruses were isolated from carcases of Mediterranean monk seals (Monachus monachus) which had died in coastal areas of Greece and Mauritania. They were characterised as being closely related to the previously identified dolphin and porpoise morbilliviruses on the basis of their serological cross-reactivities in immunofluorescence assays, and sequence homologies in their N and P genes. The results suggest that morbilliviruses of aquatic mammals may cross barriers between species of different orders.  相似文献

This work aimed at applying geometric morphometric analysis techniques to the skull of the Mediterranean monk seal ( Monachus monachus , Hermann, 1779). Inferential analyses were performed using a non-parameteric permutation framework based on a series of skulls of different age classes belonging to individuals of both sexes. Our goal was to establish whether a statistical approach based on osteometric measurements and surface analysis of photographs of the left lateral plane of the skull may lead to a different and scientifically sound method of age and sex classification in this critically endangered marine mammal. Our data indicate that non-parametric combination methodology enables the researcher to give local assessment using a combination with domains. Developing geometric morphometric techniques in a non-parametric permutation framework could be useful in solving high dimensional and small sample size problems as well as classification problems, including zoological classification of specimens within a specific population. The Mediterranean monk seal is believed to be the world's rarest pinniped and one of the most endangered mammals of the world, with fewer than 600 individuals currently surviving. The use of shape analysis would allow new insights into the biological characteristics of the monk seal by simply extracting potentially new information on age and size from museal specimens.  相似文献

Toltrazuril sulfone (Ponazuril®) is a triazine-based anti-protozoal agent with highly specific actions against apicomplexan group of organisms, which are undergoing intensive investigation. Toltrazuril sulfone may have clinical application in the treatment of Neospora. caninum and other protozoal infections in cattle. To evaluate absorption, distribution, and elimination characteristics of toltrazuril sulfone in cattle, a sensitive validated quantitative high-pressure liquid chromatography method for toltrazuril sulfone in bovine biological fluids was developed. After a single oral dose of toltrazuril sulfone at 5 mg/kg (as 150 mg/g of Marquis®; Bayer HealthCare, Shawnee Mission, KS, USA), samples from six cows showed good plasma concentrations of toltrazuril sulfone, which peaked at 4821 ng/mL ± 916 (SD) at 48 h postadministration. Thereafter, plasma concentration declined to 1950 ng/mL ± 184 (SD) at 192 h after administration with an average plasma elimination half-life of ∼58 h. Following oral dose of toltrazuril sulfone, the observed peak plasma concentrations were in relatively close agreement ranging from the lowest 3925 ng/mL to the highest of 6285 ng/mL with the mean peak plasma concentration being 4821 ng/mL. This study shows that toltrazuril sulfone is relatively well absorbed after oral dose in cattle. These results are therefore entirely consistent with and support the reported clinical efficacy of toltrazuril sulfone in the treatment of experimentally induced clinical cases of N. caninum and other protozoal-mediated bovine diseases.  相似文献
