Forty barrows (77.9 +/- 5.5 kg BW) were allotted to one of five treatment groups to examine the effects of various doses of human growth hormone-releasing factor (1-44)NH2 (hGRF) or porcine somatotropin (pST) administered twice daily on serum hormones and metabolites, performance and carcass traits. Barrows were injected s.c. with either a placebo, 10 micrograms hGRF.kg BW-1.12 h-1, 20 micrograms hGRF.kg BW-1.12 h-1, 20 micrograms pST.kg BW-1.12 h-1 or 40 micrograms pST.kg BW-1.12 h-1 for a 36-d growth trial. Blood samples were collected from 13 barrows at intervals for 360 min after injection on d 21. Compared with the placebo, 10 micrograms hGRF.kg-1.12 h-1 increased (P less than .01) serum pST and insulin and decreased (P less than .001) urea N. Injecting 20 micrograms hGRF/kg.12 h-1 elevated (P less than .001) serum pST, insulin and insulin-like growth factor-I (IGF-I) but lowered (P less than .001) urea N. Exogenous pST increased (P less than .001) serum pST, insulin, IGF-I and glucose but decreased (P less than .001) urea N. Growth rate tended to increase, and feed intake and feed/gain decreased, in a dose-related manner in response to hGRF. Also, pigs receiving 10 or 20 micrograms hGRF.kg-1.12 h-1 had reduced (P less than .1) backfat and increased (P less than .1) loineye area and percentage lean in the ham compared with pigs receiving the placebo. The effect of a human growth hormone-releasing factor (hGRF) analog ([desamino-Tyr1, D-Ala2, Ala15] hGRF(1-29)NH2) on the carcass composition of crossbred barrows was evaluated. pH, color and collagen content were measured on 74 animals distributed among the following five treatments started at about 50 kg BW: T1, control saline three times daily (TID); T2, hGRF analog (1.66 micrograms/kg, TID); T3, hGRF analog (3.33 micrograms/kg, TID); T4, hGRF analog (6.66 micrograms/kg, TID) and T5, hGRF analog (10 micrograms/kg, once daily). Animals were slaughtered at approximately 106 kg BW giving an average of 55 d on test. Carcass composition was determined on eight animals from T1 and eight animals from T4. The left side of each carcass was divided into four untrimmed commercial cuts: ham, loin, shoulder and belly, which then were dissected into muscle, separable fat, bone and skin. Ham, loin and belly weights were not affected by GRF treatment, but shoulder weight was increased (P less than .05; 10.11 vs 11.15 kg, SE = .21). There was an increase (P less than .0.05) in muscle content of all the cuts considered and a concomitant decrease (P less than .05) in fat content. The analog increased muscle weight by 16% and decreased fat weight by 25% in the pooled tissues of the shoulder, ham and loin. Overall, hGRF analog increased skin and bone weights by 39% and 19%, respectively. The dose-dependent effects of porcine somatotropin (pST) on growth performance and composition of carcass gain were investigated in 150 growing pigs. The experiment involved two genotypes (barrows from the Pig Improvement Company [PIC] and a University of Nebraska [NEB] gene pool line) and two sexes (PIC barrows and boars). At 30 kg, pigs were randomly assigned within each genotype and sex subclass to receive daily i.m. injections of 50, 100, 150, or 200 micrograms of pST/kg BW or an equivalent volume of an excipient. A diet (3.5 Mcal of DE/kg) supplemented with crystalline amino acids and containing 22.5% CP was available on an ad libitum basis until pigs were slaughtered at approximately 90 kg live weight. Excipient-treated PIC barrows exhibited faster and more efficient growth (P less than .001) and a higher capacity for carcass protein accretion (P less than .001) but similar rates of lipid deposition compared to excipient-treated NEB barrows. Within the PIC genotype, control boars grew at a rate similar to that of barrows, but they were more efficient (P less than .05) and deposited more carcass protein (P less than .05) and less lipid (P less than .001). Carcass protein accretion rate increased (P less than .001) up to approximately 150 micrograms of pST.kg BW-1.d-1, whereas lipid deposition decreased (P less than .001) with each incremental dose of pST. Although differences between PIC boars and barrows for all criteria were negated with increasing pST dose, they were maintained between the two genotypes. Polynomial regressions suggested that a slightly higher pST dose was required to optimize the feed:gain ratio compared with rate of gain and that the dose (micrograms per kilogram BW per day) was a function of the genotype and sex (feed:gain: 185, 170, and 155; rate of gain: 155, 155, and 125 for NEB barrows, PIC barrows, and PIC boars, respectively).  相似文献

A human growth hormone-releasing factor analogue, [DesNH2Tyr1,D-Ala2,Ala15]hGRF(1-29)NH2 (GRF-A), was infused s.c. into lambs for 28 d to determine its effects on growth performance and carcass composition. Twenty crossbred wethers weighing 47.0 +/- .5 kg were implanted with 7-d osmotic minipumps at weekly intervals. Minipumps contained either vehicle (dimethyl sulfoxide:H2O, 1:1) or GRF-A, released at a rate of 208 pmol (or .7 micrograms).h-1.kg-1. During the infusion period, plasma GH levels were increased (P less than .01) in GRF-A-treated wethers compared with control wethers (15.0 vs 9.3 ng/ml) and were higher on days that closely followed minipump implantation. Plasma IGF-I and hepatic IGF-I RNA concentrations were similar in lambs of both groups. Analogue treatment improved feed conversion (4.9 vs 5.8 kg dry matter/kg gain, P less than .05), increased average daily gain (.35 vs .30 kg, P = .05) and had no effect on feed intake, wool growth and body, carcass, selected organ and pituitary weights. Carcasses from GRF-A-infused lambs had less adjusted fat depth, a lower percentage of fat and a higher percentage of protein (P less than .05) than carcasses from control lambs. Magnitude of most effects of GRF-A on carcass measurements were correlated with the mean GH level that a lamb had during the infusion period. In conclusion, s.c. infusion of GRF-A improved feed utilization and altered carcass composition of feeder lambs in a relatively short period of time (28 d).  相似文献

Growth, carcass traits, and selected reproductive characteristics were evaluated in prepubertal gilts treated with either a constant mass of pGH or a mass of pGH adjusted periodically for changes in BW. Gilts (64 kg, n = 24) were given 24 daily injections of either vehicle (C; control) or one of two doses of pGH: 70 micrograms/kg of BW, with dose adjusted every 5th d for changes in BW (A; adjusted), or 70 micrograms/kg of initial BW (U; unadjusted). Gilts were slaughtered on d 25. Gilts treated with pGH had higher ADG (P less than .002) and improved feed efficiency (kg of feed/kg of gain; P = .0003) compared with controls. Weights of adrenal glands, liver, heart, and kidney were higher (all P less than .01) for Groups A and U than for Group C gilts. Average backfat thickness was less (P less than .004) for A and U gilts than for C gilts and less for Group A than for Group U (P less than .02). Furthermore, growth and carcass traits were similar (P greater than .05) for Groups A and U, except for measurements of first rib backfat, last rib backfat, and average backfat depth (P less than .05). Culture of granulosa cells (GC) was employed to assess ovarian function. Addition of FSH to the culture media enhanced secretion of progesterone (P4) by cultured GC from all in vivo treatments compared with unsupplemented cultures of GC (P less than .05). Two experiments were performed to examine the ability of human pancreatic growth hormone releasing factor (hGRF) administration to stimulate endogenous growth hormone (GH) secretion in lambs. Each study utilized eight Dorset wether lambs in replicated 4 X 4 Latin square experiments. Growth hormone response (integrated area under the curve for 150 min post-injection) for 0, 1, 5 and 10 micrograms hGRF/kg body weight averaged 13, 23, 92 and 134 units, respectively. While the 1-microgram hGRF dose was not different (P greater than .05) than the response to saline injection, there was an increased (P less than .01) GH response to 5 or 10 micrograms hGRF. Overall the GH response increased in a log dose-response fashion. There was distinct variation between lambs in their response to hGRF. Study II examined the optimal method to administer 40 micrograms hGRF/kg body weight to maximize GH concentration over 24 h. Continuous infusion (CI) was compared with eight (8X), four (4X), or two (2X) injections/d. Hourly blood samples were obtained from all lambs. Growth hormone response (area under the curve for 24 h) was 162, 305, 306 and 220 units for CI, 8X, 4X and 2X, respectively. Growth hormone response to CI was inferior to discrete injections, and the GH response to 4X or 8X was superior to 2X/d. Results demonstrate that, in spite of lamb-to-lamb variation, one can utilize exogenous hGRF to enhance GH secretion in lambs. Thus, the ability of exogenous hGRF to enhance growth performance merits further study.  相似文献

Sixty male dairy grain-fed calves, raised from 70 to 223 kg BW in individual crates, were used in a 2 X 2 factorial arrangement to determine the effect of administration of human growth hormone-releasing factor (1-29)NH2 (GRF) and(or) thyrotropin-releasing factor (TRF). Calves received twice-daily s.c. injections of .9% NaCl (control), GRF (5 micrograms/kg BW), TRF (1 micrograms/kg BW) or GRF (5 micrograms/kg BW) plus TRF (1 micrograms/kg GTRF). Average daily gain and days on feed were not affected by treatments, but TRF treatment increased (P less than .05) total intake of dry matter (DM) and feed conversion ratio: 3.00, 3.02, 3.08, and 3.22 kg DM/kg weight gain for control, GRF, TRF, and GTRF, respectively. During two 7-d periods, after 66 and 75 d of treatment, feces and urine were collected from 40 calves (5 per treatment per period). Treatment with GRF increased (P less than .05) digestibility of DM, nitrogen (N), and energy and tended (P less than .20) to increase N retention. At slaughter, withers height was increased (P = .05) by GRF and carcass length was increased (P less than .05) by TRF. Pituitary and liver weights were increased (P less than .05) by TRF. The combination of GRF and TRF slightly increased (P less than .10) protein content and decreased (P less than .05) fat content of the 9-10-11th rib section. After d 1, GRF treatment chronically increased (P less than .05) insulin concentrations and also increased (P less than .10) IGF-I concentrations on d 29 and 57. In summary, chronic treatment with GRF and(or) TRF did not improve growth or efficiency, although GRF increased digestibility of DM, N, and energy and the GRF plus TRF combination resulted in slightly leaner carcasses.  相似文献

Targhee x Hampshire lambs (average BW 23 +/- 1 kg) were used in two experiments to determine the effects of finishing on concentrate with an anabolic implant or forage grazing after concentrate feeding on growth, organ and viscera weights, and carcass tissue accretion. In Exp. 1 and 2 lambs were penned by sex and assigned for slaughter at initial (23 kg), intermediate (37 kg), or end BW (ewes, 47.7; wethers 50.4 kg). From 23 to 37 kg BW, lambs were fed all-concentrate diets in drylot (DL) or grazed on alfalfa (ALF). Experiment 1 was a 2 x 2 factorial with 28 lambs; factors were wether vs ewe lambs and unimplanted vs DL implanted with trenbolone acetate-estradiol benzoate. There were no differences in organ and viscera weights due to implant status. However, ADG (P < .03) and lean gain (P < .02) were greater for implanted than for unimplanted wethers (507 vs 357 g and 1,314 vs 656 g, respectively). Ewes did not respond to the implant. Fat accretion was not affected by implantation. Experiment 2 was a 2 x 3 factorial with 42 lambs; factors were wether vs ewe lambs and drylot during growing and finishing phases (DL-DL) vs drylot during growing and alfalfa grazing during finishing (DL-ALF) vs alfalfa grazing during growing and finishing phases (ALF-ALF). In Exp. 2, ADG of DL-DL lambs was greater (P < .01) than ADG of DL-ALF or ALF-ALF lambs. Lambs on ALF-ALF had smaller (P < .05) livers and rumen/reticulum weights but heavier (P < .04) kidney, omasum, small and large intestine, and cecum weights than those on DL. In Exp. 2, DL-ALF and ALF-ALF lambs had overall hindsaddle lean gain equal to those on DL-DL with less mesenteric fat and 100 g less separable fat. Finishing lambs on alfalfa reduced fat accretion without decreasing lean accretion, whereas trenbolone acetate implants for lambs fed concentrate increased BW gain and lean accretion without affecting fat accretion.  相似文献

The effects of cimaterol, a beta agonist, on basal metabolic rate, heat increment, maintenance requirements and carcass characteristics were determined using six treated and six control Suffolk ewe lambs. The lambs were fed a pelleted diet (18.7% CP, 2.64 Mcal ME/kg) with or without .5 mg cimaterol/kg BW.75 daily for 70 d. Heat production was monitored for 2 d on each animal at three levels of intake by respiration calorimetry. A 7-d total collection digestion trial was conducted on each animal at both high and low levels of intake. Cimaterol-fed lambs gained more (P less than .05) weight (174 vs 107 g/d) and had a higher (P less than .01) gain/feed ratio (151 vs 90 g/kg) than controls. Cimaterol did not affect diet digestibility or methane production. It reduced (P less than .01) urinary N excretion by 12% and improved (P less than .001) N retention by 18%. Cimaterol also increased carcass weight (26.9 vs 22.1 kg), dressing percentage (57.2 vs 53.9), longissimus muscle area (22.5 vs 15.0 cm2) and leg score (14.3 vs 12.2). Heat production was, on the average, elevated 7 to 10% on d 1 to 4 of cimaterol feeding but reverted to control levels by d 10. Cimaterol did not have any long-term thermogenic effects, either expressed as partial efficiency of ME use for growth (.48 vs .49), as maintenance ME requirements (76 vs 75 kcal/kg BW.75) or as fasting heat production (84 vs 80 kcal/kg BW.75) for treated vs control lambs, respectively. Results indicate little long-term thermogenic effect of cimaterol, even though growth rate and protein deposition were increased.  相似文献

We conducted two experiments to determine whether the efficacy of chromium picolinate (CrP) on growth performance, carcass composition, and tissue accretion rates is dependent on the lean gain potential of the pigs. In Exp. 1, 40 barrows (20 from each of two genetic backgrounds; two pigs per pen, five pens per treatment) were fed a fortified, corn-soybean meal basal diet (.95% lysine from 19 to 55 kg BW; .80% lysine from 55 to 109 kg BW) without or with 200 microg/kg of Cr from CrP. The addition of Cr had no effect on performance, carcass measurements, or accretion rates of carcass protein or lipid, regardless of the lean gain potential of the pigs. In Exp. 2, 60 group-penned pigs (three pigs per pen; five pens per treatment) were fed a fortified, corn-soybean meal basal diet without or with 200 microg/kg of Cr from CrP from 21 to 104 kg BW. Within the dietary Cr treatments, half of the pigs received daily injections of 3 mg of porcine somatotropin (pST) from 54 to 104 kg BW. The pST administration resulted in faster growth rates (P < .007), improved feed efficiency (P < .001), increased longissimus area (P < .001), and decreased 10th-rib backfat (P < .001). Administration of pST also increased the percentage and accretion rate of carcass protein (P < .001) and decreased the percentage and accretion rate of carcass lipid (P < .001). The addition of CrP to the diet had no effect on any variable measured in either the untreated or pST-treated pigs. In these studies, Cr was ineffective at altering the composition of the carcass and its effects were not dependent on the pig's potential for lean gain.  相似文献

Ninety-six pigs (49.5 +/- .5 kg BW) were allotted to six treatments and were injected once (SID) or three times daily (TID) s.c. with a [desamino-Tyr1, D-Ala2, Ala15] human growth hormone-releasing factor (1-29) NH2 analog (GRF-AN). Treatments were T1, noninjected control; T2, saline-injected control (TID); T3, GRF-AN (1.66 micrograms/kg BW, TID); T4, GRF-AN (3.33 micrograms/kg BW, TID); T5, GRF-AN (6.66 micrograms/kg BW, TID) and T6, GRF-AN (10 micrograms/kg BW, SID). Feed protein levels were 14% for T1 and 18.8% for T2 through T6. The GRF-AN increased serum growth hormone (GH) concentration for the entire growing period (about 56 d) in a dose-related manner and did not induce desensitization of the somatotroph cells; in fact, an increase (P less than .05) in the GH response to GRF-AN was observed in T4 and T5 after 1 mo of treatment. This GRF-AN produced (P less than .05) a dose-dependent effect on several variables in animals grown to 110 kg BW: in comparison to T2, T5 increased meat in carcass (6%), carcass length (3%), loin eye area (13%), liver weight (19%), kidney weight (30%), improved feed efficiency (20%) and decreased total feed intake by 50 kg (26%). Compared to T2, average daily gain was increased (P less than .05) by 13% by the 3.33 micrograms/kg TID dose. Blood parameters were measured on d 1, 29 and 57. Increased serum glucose and insulin levels were observed. Triiodothyronine and thyroxine concentrations were increased and decreased, respectively after 28 d of treatment but were unchanged on d 57. This potent GRF analog maintained high GH concentration for at least 56 d and affected several growth parameters and carcass characteristics in a dose-related manner similar in magnitude to that reported in studies using porcine GH.  相似文献

Daily injection of ovine and bovine somatotropin (oST and bST, respectively) has been shown to improve performance and carcass quality of finishing lambs. To evaluate responses to continuously released bST and porcine ST (pST), which have 99 and 91% sequence homology with oST, respectively, finishing lambs were implanted with 2-wk Alzet pumps containing bST or pST, which was released at rates of 2 or 4 mg/d. Six-week growth rate and feed efficiency responses to bST were greater than those to pST (P less than .05). Overall feed efficiency was improved 15% and growth rate was increased 16% in lambs treated with 4 mg/d of bST compared with control lambs and neither trait was affected in pST-treated lambs. Performance responses were reflected by changes in circulating glucose, blood urea nitrogen, and insulin-like growth factor I (IGF-I) concentrations. Scatchard analysis of sera with relative binding of greater than 30% revealed that average binding capacities and affinities of pST-treated lambs were 7.0 mg/liter and 6.0 x 10(9) liters/mol, respectively, and of bST-treated lambs were .8 mg/liter and 1.3 x 10(9) liters/mol, respectively. In addition, lambs with high-capacity pST antibodies had lower 6-wk IGF-I concentrations than those of controls, suggesting that these antibodies may have been attenuating responsiveness to pST. It is concluded that continuously released bST, but not pST, improves performance of finishing lambs.  相似文献

To evaluate the effect of zeranol implants in steers on compensatory ++growth, 80 steer calves (9 mo of age; 200 kg) were fed at two feeding levels (RO = 9.2 MJ ME/kg DM; R1 = 6.9 MJ ME/kg DM) for 119 d (Period 1). During Period 2, steers were full-fed to 400 kg BW with (Z1) or without (ZO) zeranol implants. Ten steers were slaughtered at the end of Period 1 to estimate carcass composition. Differences of 100 kg in BW were achieved by restriction in Period 1. Subsequent to restriction, cumulative ADG remained greater (P less than .05) up to the 24th wk of recuperation and implants increased (P less than .001) BW gain by 31% and 24% for RO and R1, respectively. The average daily energy intake (ME/W(.75) in Period 2 was similar for all treatments. Feed conversion was improved by 21.5% (P less than .05) by implants. At the end of Period 2 the R1ZO had 8.6 kg less muscle (P less than .001), 2.9 kg less bone (P less than .001) and 5.9 kg more fat (P less than .05) than the ROZO. In comparison, the carcasses of the implanted animals did not show significant differences (P greater than .05) due to restriction. Carcass daily gains were increased by previous restriction (P less than .01) and implants (P less than .05). Zeranol increased daily live weight gain and feed conversion in animals in continuous growth as well as in those observed in compensatory growth an tended to eliminate a tendency for higher content of fat in carcasses of nonimplanted animals making compensatory growth.  相似文献

Sixteen Debouillet wether lambs (approximately 3 mo old) were placed indoors in 1.5- x 3-m pens (14 h light:10 h dark) 28 d after weaning. Lambs received no implant or a 12-mg zeranol implant on d-2 (eight lambs/group). Two days later (d 0), animals received either 0 or 2.5 mg ovine growth hormone (oGH, eight lambs/group) s.c. on alternate days for 42 d. Animals had ad libitum access to water, salt, mineral and a pelleted alfalfa diet (16% CP). After 42 d, lambs were slaughtered to evaluate carcass traits, organ weights and femur characteristics. Zeranol by oGH interactions were not detected (P greater than .20). Zeranol increased (P less than .05) BW, improved (P less than .05) feed:gain during the first 20 d and increased (P less than .10) feed intake during the last 22 d of the 42-d trial compared with controls. Carcass characteristics were not altered (P greater than .10) by 12 mg zeranol. Serum insulin and prolactin were elevated (P less than .05), but serum GH was not influenced by zeranol compared with controls. Exogenous oGH decreased feed intake (P less than .10) and improved feed:gain (P less than .05) during the initial 20 d compared with controls, but did not influence (P greater than .20) these variables during the last 22 d of the study. Carcass traits were not influenced (P greater than .10) by oGH. This study was conducted to establish the extent to which different doses of pituitary porcine growth hormone (ppGH) increase pig growth performance. Pigs were treated daily for 11 wk with 0, 35 or 70 micrograms ppGH/kg BW. In addition, these effects were compared with those produced by treating pigs with 0, 35, 70 or 140 micrograms.kg BW-1.d-1 of a recombinantly derived analog of porcine growth hormone (rpGH). This analog lacks the first seven amino acids at the NH2 terminus. Growth rate was increased similarly by ppGH and rpGH (the maximal increase was 19%). Feed efficiency was improved by ppGH and rpGH (the maximal response was 25%). This improvement in feed efficiency was associated with a decrease in feed intake (17% with the largest dose of rpGH). Both ppGH and rpGH decreased adipose tissue growth and increased muscle mass. Carcass lipid was decreased by 68% in pigs treated with the largest dose of rpGH. The recombinant pGH analog appeared to be less potent than ppGH in decreasing adipose tissue growth rate. All other parameters measured, however, indicated that rpGH mimicked the biological effects of ppGH (including binding to pig liver membranes and induction of insulin-like growth factor I production). Sensory panel evaluations indicated that neither ppGH nor rpGH affected pork palatability. Larger doses of pGH (greater than 70 micrograms/kg BW) adversely affected pig mobility. This impairment in mobility appears to be due to osteochondrosis. Our findings establish that the rpGH analog is equipotent to ppGH in stimulating growth performance and that pigs can be treated without any significant adverse effects when they are treated with less than 70 micrograms of pGH.kg BW-1.d-1.  相似文献

Two finishing trials, one with lambs and one with cattle, were conducted to determine the effect of combinations of dry corn (whole or rolled) with dry rolled wheat on animal performance. The cattle (mixed crossbred yearlings) trial also evaluated methods of getting cattle to full feed by stepping-up using either grain combinations or dry rolled corn and then feeding the appropriate grain combination. In the lamb trial, as the level of dry whole corn increased in the diet of 80 Rambouillet X Suffolk lambs (29 kg), feed intake (linear, P less than .01), gain (linear, P less than .01; quadratic, P less than .15) and feed efficiency (linear, P less than .01; quadratic, P less than .15) were improved. The major improvement occurred in the first 30 d of feeding when feed efficiency was improved (linear, P less than .01; quadratic, P less than .01) by the inclusion of dry whole corn. In the cattle trial (272 mixed crossbred yearling cattle, avg = 358 kg), as the level of dry rolled corn increased, feed intake (linear, P less than .01), gain (linear, P less than .01; quadratic, P less than .01) and feed efficiency (linear, P less than .05; quadratic, P less than .05) were improved. Cattle fed 67 or 33% dry rolled corn with 33 or 67% dry rolled wheat gained 4% faster and 4.4% more efficiently than the average performance of cattle fed 100% corn or wheat. In three experiments the interrelationship between dietary CP and recombinant porcine somatotropin (rpSt, i.m. daily) on ADG, feed efficiency (F/G) and carcass traits was examined in crossbred Yorkshire gilts and barrows given ad libitum access to their diets during the finishing period (55 to 110 kg BW). Pigs, blocked by BW and gender, were assigned (four/pen) within block. In Exp. 1, 140 pigs were assigned two/gender per pen to each of five pens/block and received a diet of either 12%, 18% or 24% CP (n = 2, 1 and 2 pens/block, respectively). Pigs received rpSt, either 0 or 120 micrograms/kg BW (12% and 24% CP groups) or 60 micrograms/kg BW (18% CP group). When CP was 12%, rpSt decreased ADG and increased F/G (P less than .05), whereas when CP was 18% or 24%, rpSt increased ADG and lowered F/G (P less than .05). Backfat thickness was reduced (P less than .05) by rpSt regardless of CP. In Exp. 2, 120 pigs were assigned two/gender per pen to each of five pens/block and received a diet of 24% CP. Either 0, 15, 30, 60 or 120 micrograms of rpSt/kg BW was administered to each pig. All doses of rpSt increased ADG, lowered F/G and decreased backfat thickness compared with measurements for control pigs (P less than .05). In Exp. 1, 72 Targhee lambs (initial BW 22.1+/-.3 kg) were used to determine the effects of energy source (alfalfa pasture vs limit-fed, all-concentrate) and ionophore addition on performance, visceral organ mass, and carcass characteristics. There were no differences (P > . 10) in ADG or gain/ feed due to ionophore supplementation. Lambs that grazed alfalfa had greater (P < .05) liver, omasum, abomasum, small intestine, cecum, and large intestine weights than did lambs fed the concentrate diet. Lambs fed the concentrate diet had greater (P < .01) hot carcass weights, larger (P < .01) loin eye areas, and greater (P < .001) dressing percentages than lambs that grazed alfalfa. In Exp. 2, lambs offered the concentrate diet had greater (P < .001) DM and OM digestibilities than lambs offered alfalfa (89.5 and 91.1 vs 72.4 and 74.2%, respectively). Apparent and true N digestibilities were greater (P < .001) for the concentrate diet than for alfalfa (90.9 and 101.7 vs 77.7 and 91.9%, respectively). Likewise, grams of N retained per day were twice as great (P < .001) with the concentrate diet than with alfalfa (14.9 vs 6.0 g/ d). The greater visceral organ mass and resulting increases in energy and protein requirements in lambs that grazed alfalfa were probably responsible for the lesser hot carcass weight and dressing percentage compared with lambs fed 100% concentrate.  相似文献

Ten crossbred (Suffolk X Rambouillet) whether lambs were randomly assigned to receive 0 or 10 ppm cimaterol (CIM) in a completely mixed high-concentrate diet for 8 wk. Total weight gain and feed efficiency were improved 29% (P less than .05) and 14%, respectively, in the CIM-fed group. CIM also improved (P less than .01) dressing percent by 4.9 percentage points and improved yield grade by one grade. CIM increased longissimus muscle (LD) area 38% (P less than .01) and the yield of four lean cuts 28% (P less than .01). No difference was found in the proportion of type I (slow-contracting, oxidative) and type II (fast-contracting, mixed glycolytic/oxidative) fibers in LD and semitendinosus (ST) muscles between control and CIM groups, indicating no change in fiber type. The cross-sectional area of type II fibers in LD and ST muscles of the CIM group was 2,081 and 1,951 micron 2 as compared with 1,391 and 1,296 micron2 of the control group, respectively. The increase was approximately 50% (P less than .01). No difference was found in cross-sectional area of type I fibers, indicating that the increase of muscle mass was due to hypertrophy of type II fibers only. DNA concentration (micrograms/g wet muscle or microgram/g protein) of CIM muscle was much lower (P less than .01) than that of control muscle, suggesting that the protein accretion in muscle was accomplished without additional incorporation of nuclei from satellite cells.  相似文献

Thirty-six barrows were used in a 2 X 3 factorial treatment array to determine the effects of time of injection (0800 [AM] or 1800 [PM]) of recombinant porcine somatotropin (rpST) (0, 50, or 100 micrograms.kg BW.d-1 adjusted weekly) relative to time of feeding on growth performance, carcass composition, serum hormones and metabolites, and muscle RNA, DNA, and protein. Pigs were fed at 85% of ad libitum and allowed access to feed between 0800 and 1200. Treatments were initiated at 38 kg and continued until each pig consumed an average of 7.5 Mcal of DE/d. There was no significant effect of injection time for any measure of growth performance or composition of gain even though rpST treatment improved most criteria evaluated. Treatment with rpST increased ADG by 30%, improved feed:gain by 23%, reduced lipid accretion by 46%, increased protein accretion by 69%, and increased loin eye area (LEA) by 26%. Time of injection also had no effect on serum hormones or metabolites, except for nonesterified fatty acids (NEFA), which were 20% higher in the AM-injected animals. Treatment with rpST increased (P less than .05) RNA concentration (21%) and RNA/DNA (17%) in longissimus dorsi (LD) muscle. In semimembranosus (SM) muscle, however, rpST administration resulted in an increased (P less than .05) DNA concentration (10%) and a decreased DM content (4%). These results suggest that rpST influences growth differently in these two muscles. We conclude that time of rpST administration (AM vs PM) has no effect on its metabolic properties and, therefore, no effect on growth performance in the pig.  相似文献
