Fibre morphological effects on mechano-sorptive creep   总被引:2,自引:2,他引:0
The increased creep rate of paper under load during moisture cycling conditions as compared to that at high constant humidity is a problem in the use of packaging materials. In order to investigate the influence of morphological factors of the fibres on the occurrence and magnitude of this phenomenon, i.e. the occurrence of mechano-sorptive creep, studies on wood fibres isolated from different parts of spruce wood were performed. Thus, creep properties were studied on earlywood and latewood fibres from both juvenile wood and mature wood. In general, latewood fibres showed a higher degree of mechano-sorptive creep than earlywood fibres, and mature wood showed a higher degree of mechano-sorptive creep than juvenile fibres. The difference in mechano-sorptive creep rate between different fibres was shown to be correlated to the differences in fibril angle. The smaller the fibril angle the higher was the mechano-sorptive creep ratio. It was suggested that at fibril angles approaching 45° wood fibres do not exhibit mechano-sorptive creep.  相似文献

Transverse swelling and its anisotropy in hinoki (Chamaecyparis obtusa) in several kinds of organic liquids and in water were investigated by means the replica method. There was more cross-sectional swelling of cell walls and cell wall thickness in earlywood than in latewood. Marked swelling toward cell lumens was observed in wood swollen in liquids that had higher swelling potentials than water. This suggests that the swelling of cell walls in these liquids is much greater than the external swelling. Feret's diameters of the cell lumens were reduced by swelling in all the observed cases except in the tangential direction of earlywood, suggesting that cell walls swell to a much less extent in width than in thickness. Deformation of cell shapes caused by the tensile force from the latewood were observed in the earlywood and in the transitional region from earlywood to latewood. When swollen in water, transverse swelling anisotropy caused only by the swelling in cell wall thickness were calculated to be 1.2 for the whole region over an annual ring and 1.4 for the earlywood. These values could not account for the external swelling anisotropy of 2.1. Considering obvious deformations of cell shapes in the earlywood and in the transitional region, we conclude that the interaction between earlywood and latewood is one of the prime factors contributing to the transverse swelling anisotropy of coniferous wood.Part of this report was presented at the 48th Annual Meeting of the Japan Wood Research Society, Nagoya, April 1998  相似文献

In this study, the contact angles of four different reference liquids (including distilled water, diiodomethane, formadide and glycerol) formed on the surfaces of wood, treated with chromated copper arsenate (CCA) and two other emerging copper-based water-borne systems (commercial names: NW and NS) were measured with sessile drop method. Based on the contact angle data, the surface energy was obtained from the acid-base approach. The total surface energy consisted of Lifshiz-van der Waals parameter and acid-base parameter. Results showed that the NW and CCA treatments made the wood surface more hydrophobic while the NS treatment had the reverse effect on the wood surface mainly owing to the increased penetration of earlywood. By using three liquids, diiodomethane, formamide and distilled water, the total surface energy obtained for untreated earlywood, untreated latewood, CCA-treated earlywood, CCA-treated latewood, NW-treated earlywood, NW-treated latewood, NS-treated earlywood and NS-treated latewood were 43.1, 44.5, 43.4, 45.1, 49.4, 40.6, 46.0 and 40.9 mJ/m2, respectively. The surface energy of CCA-treated wood was almost the same as untreated wood. After NW and NS treatments, the surface energy of both earlywood and latewood changed a little. However, the change was not so obvious as to draw any further conclusion concerning the influence of NW and NS treatments on the surface energy of wood. __________ Translated from Journal of Beijing Forestry University, 2006, 28(4): 1–4 [译自: 北京林业大学学报]  相似文献

A better understanding of the sorption behavior of different wood structures could be useful in protecting wood against wood deterioration and fungal attack. The purpose of this study was to investigate the effect of differences among earlywood, latewood, and tree ring location within the stem cross-section of loblolly pine (Pinus taeda) on the sorption kinetics and statics of water vapor under ambient conditions. The water vapor sorption of earlywood and latewood in different tree rings was recorded using a dynamic contact angle analyzer under relative humidity changes from 11 to 89%, as provided by saturated salt solutions. Earlywood had higher sorption rates and diffusion coefficients than latewood, while outer tree rings had higher sorption rates and diffusion coefficients than inner tree rings. The sorption isotherms of earlywood, latewood, and different tree ring locations within the stem cross-section were fitted very well by a Hailwood–Horrobin model.  相似文献

Summary Intra-increment variation in specific gravity of wood is studied in relation to the types of annual increments in Pinus wallichiana. In the normal annual increments specific gravity increases almost linearly across the ring, displaying minimum value in the first-formed earlywood and maximum value in the last-formed latewood. The occurrence of false rings and that of compression wood in an annual ring causes a localized increase in specific gravity. The change in specific gravity at the false growth ring boundary is slight and gradual, whereas at the true annual rings boundary the change is steep and abrupt. The specific gravity in the first-formed earlywood portion gives the most consistent value as compared to whole earlywood, whole latewood and whole ring when studied around the circumference. The financial support from University Grants Commission (India) is gratefully acknowledged  相似文献

Changes in the fracture behaviour of Norway spruce tonewood after fungal treatment were studied. Specimens were incubated for 6, 9 and 12 months with Physisporinus (P.) vitreus. Fracture tests were performed in a compact-tension fracture experiment set-up, and the results were compared with the morphological analysis of the degraded wood structure and transverse sections of the crack tip viewed under light and fluorescence microscopy. It was evident that both the failure load and critical stress intensity factors were reduced in wood after prolonged incubation periods. Weight losses were significantly higher in sapwood than in heartwood. With prolonged incubation periods, the frequency of unstable fracture and brittle behaviour of the wood increased. In untreated wood, cracks were initiated in the earlywood. The process involved both delamination of the cells within the middle lamellae and rupture of the cell walls, inducing a zigzag crack tip pattern. In fungally treated wood, cracks often commenced from the intersection between late- and earlywood, resulting in a straight tangential crack line. Micrographic images showed that P. vitreus was more active in the secondary walls of latewood tracheids. In this region of the wood, the cell walls were strongly degraded after 9–12 months of incubation, resulting in a reduction in tensile strength, even though the wood did not show strong features of decay at the macroscopic level.  相似文献

Genetic parameters for various wood density traits were estimated in 29-year-old trees of 18 full-sib families of hybrid larch (Larix gmelinii var. japonica × Larix kaempferi) F1. Intra-ring density variation (IDV) was also evaluated using a model that expresses the pattern curve from earlywood to latewood as a power function. A high IDV indicates an abrupt change in wood density from earlywood to latewood. The ring width and wood density traits of individual rings were determined by X-ray densitometry. Overall wood density (RD) was shown to increase with increasing ring number, ranging from 0.42–0.59 g/cm3, whereas IDV of individual rings decreased gradually from pith outwards. Estimates of individual tree narrow-sense heritability of RD and IDV were 0.66 and 0.67, respectively. IDV showed negative genetic and phenotypic correlations with RD (r g = −0.99, r p = −0.72). The predicted genetic gains in latewood proportion and IDV were higher than that of RD. These results suggest that the intra-ring density variation is under moderate genetic control equivalent to wood density. The trend of increasing wood density from earlywood to latewood was associated with changes in both tracheid diameter and cell wall thickness.  相似文献

Summary Specially designed wood blocks from Norway spruce were used to study the nature of the fracture surfaces developed in shear using a tensile tester. In the case of the control (water-soaked blocks), the fracture in the latewood takes place mainly in the S1 layer while in the earlywood the fracture occurs across the double cell wall. After dilute alkali treatment, some earlywood cells also fracture in the S1 layer. For sulfite-treated samples, on the other hand, both earlywood and latewood fracture in the middle lamella.Financial support from the Empire State Paper Research Associates (ESPRA) is greatly appreciated  相似文献

The interactions of alkaline copper quat (ACQ) components with the earlywood and latewood tissues of southern pine were investigated. There was a highly significant redistribution of the copper amine component from the earlywood to the latewood during post-treatment fixation at 50°C, which was mainly attributed to diffusion of copper amine from the earlywood into the latewood. A small amount of copper amine redistributed between the tissues and toward the wood surfaces during drying following fixation. The redistribution within the wood was similar whether the preservative penetrated longitudinally, tangentially, or radially into the wood during pressure treatment. This redistribution resulted in lower solubility of copper, and this effect contributes to the overall copper fixation in ACQ-treated wood. The quat component did not significantly diffuse after treatment, and its concentration remained much higher in the earlywood compared to the latewood.  相似文献

Summary Fibril angles were greater for earlywood (avg. 33.4°) than for latewood tracheids (avg. 26.9°). For earlywood, fibril angle did not differ between growth rates when the specific gravity was low (avg. 33.3°). When the specific gravity was high, wood of fast growth had a higher fibril angle (avg. 35.1°) than wood of slow growth (avg. 32.0°). No differences were detected between core, middle, and outer wood. In latewood tracheids, fibril angles were greater in corewood (avg. 28.0°) than in middle or outer wood (avg. 26.3°). For whole wood (a weighted average of earlywood and latewood), fibril angle averaged 30.7° and was greater in corewood (avg. 32.2°) than in middle or outer wood (avg. 29.9°).  相似文献

Abstract

Wood properties, including tracheid cross-sectional dimensions, show a large degree of variation. To improve the properties of products made from wood, different methods to control variation have been developed. This study aims to determine the theoretical efficiency of three control strategies: the fractionation of pulped tracheids into earlywood and latewood, the separation of juvenile and mature wood, and sorting of logs according to tree size. The efficiency of each method was studied by first constructing virtual trees from measured tracheid cross-sectional dimensions, then simulating the efficiency of above-mentioned methods. The tracheid dimension data include Norway spruce (Picea abies (L.) Karst.) and Scots pine (Pinus sylvestris L.). The simulations show that separation into earlywood and latewood classes has the highest theoretical efficiency and yields the lowest variances in raw material. Classification into juvenile and mature wood groups is the second most efficient method, and the sorting of logs according to the size class of the tree is the least efficient method. It was also concluded that the variation in cell-wall thickness and radial diameter mainly originates from differences between earlywood and latewood, whereas the variation in tangential diameter mainly originates from differences between mature and juvenile wood.  相似文献

Summary Variations and correlations of various ring width and ring density features were analyzed in 18 European oak (Quercus petraea andQuercus robur) trees from northeastern France. In light of these analyses, the goodness of various tree-ring features as a climatic parameter was discussed. In general, ring density features (viz. earlywood density, latewood density, average ring density, minimum density and maximum density) show a stronger response to calendar year, a comprehensive climatic variable, than ring width features (viz. earlywood width, latewood width, total ring width and latewood percent). The response of latewood features (viz. latewood width, latewood density and maximum latewood density) is stronger than that of earlywood features (viz. earlywood width, earlywood density and minimum earlywood density). Average ring density seems to be the most sensible tree-ring feature in European oak in terms of the response to calendar year. Moreover, total ring width as a climatic parameter is not as good as latewood width, and maximum (latewood) density and minimum (earlywood) density appears not to contain as much climatic information as (average) latewood density and (average) earlywood density, respectively. This project was supported by the institut National de la Recherche Agromonique (INRA). • ? Each annual ring in pines consists of earlywood and latewood with considerable difference in density and width. To get a better determination of the genetic regulation of total wood density in Scots pine (Pinus sylvestris L.), density and width of those ring sections were measured in annual ring numbers 12 to 21 of Scots pines in a full-sib progeny test. Tree height and stem diameter were also measured.
  • ? Heritabilities for the annual ring sections increased with age for earlywood density from 0.08 to approximately 0.25; latewood density showed similar reductions. Heritability over all 10 annual rings was 0.25 for earlywood density, 0.22 for latewood density, 0.29 for height and 0.10 for stem diameter. Genetic correlations between earlywood and latewood density and growth traits were negative, while they were strongly positive between densities of adjacent annual rings (0.70–1.0).
  • ? Despite the higher heritability of earlywood density, the strong positive genetic correlation between those traits indicates little benefit from focusing solely on earlywood density when selecting for wood density. Analysing earlywood and latewood separately does not benefit from including the width of the corresponding ring section as a covariate. Juvenile wood may possibly turn into mature wood 15–20 y from the pith.

The effect of strain on dry, clear Norway spruce (Picea abies [L.] Karst.) wood was studied by tensile testing along the cell axis and by in situ X-ray diffraction measurements. The mean microfibril angle (MFA) was initially 3–12 degrees and did not decrease due to strain. Based on the positions of the reflections 200 and 004 of crystalline cellulose, cellulose chains elongated and the distance between the hydrogen bonded sheets of chains decreased due to the strain. The elongation of the unit cell parallel to the cellulose chains was twice as high in juvenile wood as in mature wood. The (X-ray) Poisson ratio ν ca for crystalline cellulose in Norway spruce was calculated from the deformation of the unit cell. The average ν ca of earlywood was 0.28 ± 0.10 in juvenile wood and 0.38 ± 0.23 in mature wood. In latewood, the average ν ca was 0.48 ± 0.10 in juvenile wood and 0.82 ± 0.11 in mature wood. The average ν ca values were not directly correlated to the crystallite dimensions or to the mean MFA in juvenile and mature earlywood and latewood. The results show that the amorphous matrix has a definite effect on the deformation of cellulose crystallites.  相似文献

Summary The variation of the lignin content within one growth increment of Abies sachalinensis was investigated with the aid of an ultraviolet microscopic image analyser. The lignin content was determined continuously in each cell within a growth increment. The direct photometric scanning method of UV image is believed to give accurate results for determination of the lignin content of the cell wall, since it contains fewer assumptions. The lignin content of the earlywood was higher than that of latewood in adult wood as same as the others. It was high, however, in the terminal zone of the latewood. The trends of the juvenile wood were quite different from those of the adult wood. The lignin content increased from earlywood to latewood. This paper was presented at the Wood Anatomy Congress of IAWA, Aug. 27, 1979, Amsterdam. The purpose of this study was to explore the ring characteristics of Japanese cedar (Cryptomeria japonica) tree growth with thinning and unthinning regimes. The trees grown with thinning regimes increased in average ring width (RW), earlywood width, latewood width, ring density (RD), earlywood density, latewood density, maximum ring density, and latewood percentage (LWP) for the entire period of 16 years after thinning, as compared to those grown with unthinning regimes. The RW and RD components showed different reactions lasting several years after thinning. Overall, thinning caused immediate production (first year) of higher RD, lasting for several years; however, wider RW was delayed up to several years after treatment. There was a weak relationship between RW (growth rate) and wood density; and there were significant positive relationships between the RD and LWP. The results suggest that the compression wood produced after thinning.  相似文献

To investigate the fracture behavior of wood, the porosity and heterogeneities of its microstructure should be taken into account. Considering these features of wood microstructure in a continuum-based model is still a difficult problem and the lattice model might be an alternative. In the developed mixed lattice-continuum model, the probable crack propagation volume was modeled by defining a three-dimensional lattice of different beam elements and the other regions were considered as continuum medium. Different beam elements of lattice represented the earlywood fibers, latewood fibers, ray cells and bonding medium between the fibers. The proposed model was used to investigate the mechanism of mode I fracture in a small notched wood specimen in RL orientation. The resulting pre-peak and softening curve and also the crack opening trajectory in both cross-section and longitudinal-section in model were in good agreement with the experimental observations. This model shows the importance of considering the three-dimensional and distributed propagation of microcracks and main cracks in fracture stability. It was also shown that in mode I fracture, RL orientation, the main crack propagates in the earlywood ring.  相似文献

Summary The effects of air-drying and solvent-drying on the sapwood of Abies grandis have been investigated by a new method for the determination of the size and number of conducting tracheid lumina and pit membrane pores which involves the measurement of gaseous permeability at various mean pressures. Both earlywood and latewood tracheids (83% of the total) were found to be conducting in solvent-dried wood, but in air-dried wood only latewood tracheids (32% of the total) were conducting. In solvent-dried wood there were on average 27,000 pit membrane pores per conducting tracheid compared with only 600 in air-dried wood. In both, the average pit membrane pore radius was about 0.1 m.Liquid permeabilities have been predicted from the calculated radii and numbers. The liquid permeability of solvent-dried wood was 31 times greater than that of air-dried wood in which the lumina were responsible for 13% of the total resistance to flow. The lumina were responsible for 39% of the resistance in solvent-dried wood and it is suggested that in first-formed earlywood the lumina may cause more than half the total resistance.A new method is described for the cleaning of direct carbon replicas of wood. In this the cellulose is removed by cellulase instead of sulphuric acid, and no wax backing is required. This provides much cleaner replicas. Electron micrographs have been obtained of both earlywood and latewood dried by the two methods. The authors wish to thank Mr. A. R. Sayers for preparing the computer programme used in this work, Dr. R. Ph. C. Johnson for his help and advice regarding the electron microscopy and Professors Matthews and Weatherley for their advice and encouragement.  相似文献

Summary Graphical models have been developed to represent X-ray diffraction patterns for microfibril arrangements in each of the characteristic secondary wall layers of fibres in normal earlywood, latewood, compression wood, and tension wood. Models for usual combinations of typical layers S1, S2, and S3, and for complex tissues including more than one S2 layer class indicate a basis for a new analytical technique for diffractograms.Diffractograms of tissues from earlywood or latewood zones may involve effects of three to four S2 layer variations, possibly including tension wood or compression wood. The new technique enables assessment of the microfibril angle for each. Corresponding probable experimental errors are considered. Thus it is demonstrated that, even without direct calibration by other methods for measuring microfibril angle, realistic comparative values may be obtained for all S2 layer classes substantially represented. Such data constitute significantly more reliable indices of actual values than those provided by other techniques. Also, the data give qualitative information on other aspects of the variability of fibre types within each specimen.  相似文献
