The long-term nature of forest crop rotations makes it difficult to determine impacts of forestry on soil nutrients that might be depleted by forest growth. We used small scale, highly stocked plots to compress the length of the rotation and rapidly induce nutrient depletion. In the study, two species (Pinus radiata D. Don and Cupressus lusitanica Miller) are compared under two disturbance regimes (soil undisturbed and compacted), and two fertiliser treatments (nil and plus fertiliser), applied in factorial combination at 33 sites, covering the range of climatic and edaphic variation found in plantation forests across New Zealand. To assess our ability to rapidly highlight important soil properties, foliar nutrient concentrations were determined 20 months after planting. It was hypothesised that the densely planted plots, even at a young age, would create sufficient pressure on nutrient resources to allow development of relationships between properties used as indicies of soil nutrient availability and foliar nutrient concentrations. For both species significant relationships between foliar nutrients and 0–10 cm layer soil properties from unfertilised plots were evident for N (total and mineralisable N) and P (total, acid extractable, organic, Bray-2 and Olsen P). With the exception of Ca in C. lusitanica, foliar K, Ca and Mg were correlated with their respective soil exchangeable cation measures. The results thus confirm the utility of the experimental approach and the relevance of the measured soil properties for forest productivity.

In unfertilised plots foliar N and P concentrations in P. radiata exceeded those in C. lusitanica, the differences being eliminated by fertiliser application. Foliar N/P ratios in P. radiata also exceeded those in C. lusitanica. In contrast to N and P, foliar K, Ca and Mg concentrations were all higher in C. lusitanica, the difference being particularly marked for Ca and Mg. P. radiata contained substantially higher concentrations of the metals Zn, Mn and Al than C. lusitanica, whereas the latter contained higher B concentrations. Possible reasons for differences between species in foliar nutrient concentrations are discussed.  相似文献

We used an isotopic approach to evaluate the effects of three afforestation methods on the ecophysiology of an Aleppo pine plantation in semiarid Spain. The site preparation methods tested were excavation of planting holes (H), subsoiling (S), and subsoiling with addition of urban solid refuse to soil (S + USR). Five years after plantation establishment, trees in the S + USR treatment were over three times larger than those in the S treatment, and nearly five-fold larger than those planted in holes. Differences in tree biomass per hectare were even greater due to disparities in initial planting density and pine tree mortality among treatments. Pine trees in the S + USR treatment showed higher foliar P concentration, δ13C and δ15N than those in the S or H treatments. Foliar δ15N data proved that trees in the S + USR treatment utilized USR as a source of nitrogen. Foliar δ13C and δ18O data suggest that improved nutrient status differentially stimulated photosynthesis over stomatal conductance in the pine trees of the S + USR treatment, thus enhancing water use efficiency and growth. In the spring of 2002, trees in the S + USR treatment exhibited the most negative predawn water potentials of all the treatments, indicating that the rapid early growth induced by USR accelerated the onset of intense intra-specific competition for water. The results of this study have implications for the establishment and management of Aleppo pine plantations on semiarid soils. Planting seedlings at low density and/or early thinning of pine stands are strongly recommended if fast tree growth is to be maintained beyond the first few years after USR addition to soil. Foliar C, O and N isotope measurements can provide much insight into how resource acquisition by trees is affected by afforestation techniques in pine plantations under dry climatic conditions.  相似文献

The objectives of this study were: (1) to quantify the genetic variation in foliar nutrient concentration in relation to foliar carbon isotope composition (δ13C) and tree growth of 122 clones of ca. 4-year-old F1 hybrids between slash pine (Pinus elliottii Engelm var. elliottii) and Caribbean pine (P. caribaea var. hondurensis Barr. et Golf.) grown at two experimental sites with different water and nutrient availability in southeast Queensland, Australia and (2) to examine the potential of using foliar nutrient concentration of the 4-year-old tree canopies for selecting elite F1 hybrid pine clones with improved nutrient-use efficiency (NUE) and water-use efficiency (WUE), and ultimately enhanced tree growth under ambient growing conditions. There were significant differences in foliar nutrient concentrations between two canopy positions (upper outer and lower outer canopy) sampled, between summer and winter, and between the two sites. This highlights that foliar nutrient concentrations are influenced by sampling and environment. Significant genetic variations in foliar nutrient concentrations were detected between the clones, between the female parents, and between the male parents of the clones in both sampling seasons at both sites. Depending on the nutrient concerned, canopy position, season, and site sampled, the clones accounted for 4.7–33.9% of the total variation in foliar nutrient concentrations, the clone female parents for 0–25.1% and the clone male parents for 0–28.6%. The site-by-clone interactions were statistically significant for foliar N, P, Mg, Cu, Zn, Mn, Fe and mineral concentrations at the upper outer canopy in summer, and for foliar N concentration in winter. There were significant, positive correlations between clone means of foliar δ13C and N concentration at the upper outer canopy in summer for the wet site, while clone foliar δ13C was also positively related to clone foliar N concentration at both canopy positions in summer for the dry site. This suggests that clone WUE as reflected in foliar δ13C may be improved by selecting elite clones with higher foliar N concentration and increased photosynthesis, leading to enhanced tree growth when both water and N are the major growth-limiting factors. This is supported by the positive correlation detected between clone tree height and foliar N concentration at the upper outer canopy for both sites. Thus, foliar nutrient (particularly N) concentration, together with foliar δ13C, may be useful for assisting in selection of exotic pine clones with improved NUE and WUE, and enhanced tree growth under the nutrient- and water-limiting environments.  相似文献

Effects of simulated serpentine soil conditions (elevated Mg:Ca ratio and Ni concentration) on seedlings from populations of Virginia pine (Pinus virginiana Mill.) from serpentine and non-serpentine sites were evaluated in sand culture. We determined (1) how seedlings are affected by elevated Mg:Ca ratio and Ni concentrations, (2) if there are interactive effects between Mg:Ca ratio and Ni concentrations on seedling growth, needle pigment concentrations, and nutrition, and (3) if Virginia pine populations from serpentine areas are edaphic ecotypes. A Mg:Ca ratio of 5 and 50 microM Ni both reduced seedling growth compared with control seedlings grown in the presence of the standard Mg:Ca ratio of 0.5 and no Ni. Interactive effects between Mg:Ca ratio and Ni concentrations were highly significant for growth, foliar pigments, and needle and root elemental concentrations. Nickel-mediated reductions in growth and foliar pigment concentrations were less at the serpentine Mg:Ca ratio of 5 than at the standard (non-serpentine) Mg:Ca ratio of 0.5. Foliar N was reduced by Ni concentrations as low as 10 microM, and foliar and root K, Ca and P concentrations were significantly reduced by Ni concentrations above 25 microM, with greater reductions at a Mg:Ca ratio of 0.5 than at a Mg:Ca ratio of 5. There were no population x serpentine soil factor interactions for seedling growth, foliar pigment concentrations, or nutrition, suggesting that seedlings from trees growing on serpentine soils are not edaphic ecotypes. We conclude that serpentine conditions present at the site of seed collection have not resulted in the selection of edaphic ecotypes of Virginia pine with respect to Mg:Ca ratio and Ni concentration.  相似文献

Nine hardwood species were planted at a 3 m by 3 m spacing on a Mississippi River front soil (Aeric Fluvaquents) in western Mississippi and subjected to three intensities of cultural treatments. Because of the death of yellow-poplar during a severe spring flood (1973) and severe iron deficiency in three oaks caused from high soil pH, only five species are discussed in this paper. Periodic disking substantially increased heights, diameters, and survival of trees through 4 years. Disked plots had significantly lower soil N than mowed and control, while Mg was considerably higher in disked than control plots. Cultural treatments did not affect other measured soil nutrient levels.Trees growing on disked plots had significantly higher N and significantly lower P, K, and Mg concentrations than those in control plots. Foliar concentrations of K and Mg in disked and mowed plots were similar. Cultural treatments did not affect foliar Ca concentrations. Sweetgum had the lowest nutrient concentrations and cottonwood or green ash the highest for most nutrient elements tested. Other species were intermediate, and no ranking was readily apparent.

The impacts of different methods of mechanical site preparation (MSP) on performance and foliar nutrition of planted white spruce (Picea glauca (Moench) Voss) seedlings were examined at two mixed-wood boreal forest sites (Judy Creek, Fox Creek) in Alberta, Canada. The treatments included three types of MSP: disc trench, ripper plough, and bladed, the latter including thin and thick microsites (based on depth of remaining organic matter); as well as a harvested-control (no MSP). Seedlings were planted in June 1991, four months after MSP, and foliar N, P, K, Ca, Mg, S, Mn, Fe, and Al were assessed in the second and third growing seasons (13, 25, and 28 months later). Nutrient concentration and relative (among treatments) foliar nutrient content scaled up to the level of the whole seedling were examined. Following analysis of variance, significant responses were interpreted using vector analysis. MSP did not significantly affect seedling survival, height or unit needle weight. There was a non-significant trend of higher foliar biomass for seedlings in MSP areas than for control seedlings. Overall, the impact of MSP on foliar nutrient status on these sites was minimal. The only consistent positive effect of MSP on seedling nutrition was increased foliar Mg concentrations in blade-thin sites at Fox Creek. Indications of possible negative impacts of MSP include: increased Fe and Al concentrations in MSP areas at both sites; reduced P and K concentrations at both sites; and reduced Mn concentration and content at one site. The ripper treatment had the greatest positive effect on foliar nutrient status (P, K, Mn concentration). Blading (particularly blade-thin) resulted in the lowest concentrations of foliar P, K and Mn and the greatest increases in foliar Fe and Al.  相似文献

Nutrient dynamics of an Aleppo pine (Pinus halepensis, Mill.) ecosystem located in the Kassandra peninsula, Central Macedonia, Northern Greece, were studied using a chronosequence approach. The nutrient composition of the Aleppo pine trees, the understory evergreen broadleaves and forest floor in adjacent stands of 23, 48, 70 and over 100 years old was determined to estimate postfire nutrient losses. The concentration of nutrients in the Aleppo pine trees, except of Ca, was reduced with increasing stand age. Ca was the most abundant nutrient in the aboveground vegetation and in forest litter, followed by N, K, Mg and P. The accumulation of nutrients in the aboveground biomass was positively related to stand age. For younger stands nutrient accumulation was considerably larger in the understory vegetation as compared to the pines, due to substantial enhancement of the understory biomass and the number of understory species present. In middle-aged stands, however, nutrient accumulation in the understory and overstory vegetation reached a balance. In addition, considerable quantities of nutrients have been accumulated in the forest floor particularly in stands of 48 years old. Therefore, any destruction during the period of maximum nutrient accumulation in the forest floor will cause degradation of the ecosystem. It is postulated that the competition for nutrients between overstory and understory vegetation may be as important as competition in soil. Forest management practices leading to the direct conversion of the understory biomass into littermass would be of great significance for the sustainability of the Aleppo pine ecosystem.  相似文献

Concentrations of foliar N, P, S, K, Ca, and Mg were studied in relation to stand age, tree growth, site index, and soil nutrient amounts for natural white spruce stands on a wide range of site conditions in the sub-boreal spruce zone of British Columbia, Canada. While Ca was sufficient in every sampled stand, relatively widespread deficiency in N was diagnosed. Deficiencies of other nutrients were diagnosed only on wet to very wet sites. Foliar N, P and K were negatively correlated with stand age and positively correlated with height and diameter growth. White spruce site index was positively correlated with foliar nutrients, and their relationships were quantified using a quadratic function. Foliar nutrients, except Ca, are positively correlated with soil nutrients measured in routine chemical analysis, and their relationships were quantified using Mitscherlich's function. It is recommended that the existing standards need to be modified should they be applied to nutrient diagnosis in natural white spruce stands. These standards appear too high for N and too low for P, K, and Ca.  相似文献

Residual effects, after 5 years, of four site preparation treatments: (1) cut and leave; (2) cut, leave and burn; (3) chop and burn; (4) shear, pile, burn and disk; originally applied in regenerating Pinus taeda L. plantations on three soils in eastern Texas; were evaluated by determining soil bulk density, organic matter, total nitrogen and extractable P, K, Mg, Ca and foliar P, K, Ca and Mg concentrations. By the fifth growing season, surface soil (0–8 cm) properties did not vary significantly except for N and Ca concentrations which were lowest for soils on the shear, pile, burn and disk treatments. Increased N and Ca concentrations for the shear, pile, burn and disk treatment below the 0–8 cm depth indicated the lower surface concentrations were a residual effect of disking. Foliar nutrient concentrations did not differ significantly except for foliar N concentrations which were lower for trees on the shear, pile, burn and disk plots.Residual treatment effects on stand development were evaluated by measuring fifth year stand density, stem diameter at breast height (1.4 m) and total height. Although the parameters were not significantly different, stands on the shear, pile, burn and disk treatment tended to have more stems of larger size than the other treatments.  相似文献

Foliar mineral concentration may provide a basis for monitoring the consequences of long-term environmental changes, such as eutrophication and acidification of soils, or increase in atmospheric CO(2) concentration. However, analytical drifts and inter-tree and year-to-year variations may confound environmental effects on long-term changes in foliar mineral concentration. We have characterized the relative effects of these potentially confounding factors on foliar carbon, nitrogen, phosphorus, calcium, potassium, magnesium and manganese concentrations in 118 pure beech (Fagus sylvatica L.) stands, sampled in 1969-71 and 1996-97. Interannual fluctuations of these elements were quantified in a subset of six beech stands monitored for 5 years. Intercalibration between the methods used at each sampling period for nitrogen and phosphorus analyses showed significant, but low, relative differences (0.8 and 3.3% for N and P, respectively). Based on inter-tree variability, elements could be arranged in four groups: C (constant), N and P (low variability), K and Ca (medium variability), Mn and Mg (high variability). Inter-tree coefficients of variation were 2, 6, 8, 15, 18, 22 and 27%, respectively. Year-to-year fluctuations increased in the order N, P, Mg, K, Ca, and Mn coefficients of variation of 4, 4, 7, 9, 11, 15 and 29%, respectively). Between the two sampling periods, foliar N concentration increased 12%, whereas decreases were observed for P (-23%), Mg (-38%) and Ca (-16%). Ratios of N/P, N/K and N/Mg increased by 42, 19 and 77%, respectively. These changes were larger than the interannual variations for P, Mg, N/P, N/Mg and Mg/Ca. Decreasing concentrations of P and cations were particularly marked for trees growing on acidic soils, whereas the positive N trend did not depend on soil type. Both increasing atmospheric CO(2) concentrations and acidification of forest soils could contribute to decreasing P and cation concentrations in foliage. The increase in foliar N concentration with time suggests a nitrogen deposition effect. Whatever the causes of these changes, the large shift in element ratios indicates an accelerating imbalance between nitrogen and cation status.  相似文献

Retranslocation, resorption and relocation of nutrients are important adaptive mechanisms developed by plants to acquire the amount of the nutrients required for growth. They are usual mechanisms in deciduous and conifer trees that occur in Mediterranean regions where drought periods are usual. Soil factors, environmental characteristics and species factors are key drivers of nutrient retranslocation in conifers but is not well understood how soil fertility or intraspecific competition influences the process. We studied retranslocation in Pinus halepensis Mill. stands showing different site quality (differences in climate and intraspecific competition) occurring in Southeast Spain. We monitored reforested mature Aleppo pine forests in stands with differences in site quality, climate and intraspecific competition. Stands were characterised, the content of nutrients of soil and green samples (twigs and pine needles) were recorded, and seasonal nutrient retranslocation was obtained. Site characteristics were related to growth rate and nutrient content of foliage and soil. We evaluated whether the retranslocation of nutrients from older to younger foliage was related to the current-year growth rate and to the nutritional status of the plant as influenced by intraspecific competition. Foliar macronutrient concentrations and the amount of retranslocated macronutrients were seasonal, with differences related to site quality and tree density. As a general trend, nutrient concentrations increased after drought (autumn) and decreased during the growth period (spring). However, some micronutrients (mainly Na and Fe) decreased during both periods. The retranslocation pattern in Aleppo pine reinforced the hypothesis that pine adaptations to drought- and fire-prone habitats are linked to the resilience of these forest types. We developed scientific knowledge to assist decision making in adaptive forest management; e.g. fertilizer recommendations or reforestation programmes.  相似文献

The objectives of this study were: (1) to examine how foliar carbon isotope discrimination (Delta) and oxygen isotope composition (delta(18)O) are related to tree growth, ash mineral nutrient concentration and foliar nutrient concentration in 7-year-old clones of the F(1) hybrid between slash pine (Pinus elliottii Engelm.) and Caribbean pine (P. caribaea var. hondurensis Barr. et Golf.) in subtropical Australia; and (2) to evaluate the potential of using foliar Delta, ash mineral nutrient concentration and delta(18)O measurements for selecting F(1) hybrid pine clones with high water-use efficiency (WUE) and growth potential. There were significant differences in tree growth, foliar Delta, delta(18)O and ash mineral nutrient concentration among the eight clones tested. Significant negative linear relationships existed between tree growth and Delta, extrapolating to zero growth at Delta = 24-30 per thousand. There were strong genetic correlations (r = -0.83 to -0.96) between Delta and tree growth, particularly tree height. Significant non-genetic correlations (r = -0.62 to -0.80) existed between Delta and foliar K concentration. Foliar delta(18)O, ash mineral nutrient concentration and foliar nutrient concentration were unrelated to tree growth. In the F(1) hybrid pine clones, variation in tree WUE, as reflected by Delta, was largely attributed to a genetic effect on leaf photosynthetic capacity rather than on stomatal conductance, as reflected by foliar delta(18)O.  相似文献

Scots pine (Pinus sylvestris) and lodgepole pine (Pinus contorta) needle litters were compared in terms of nutrient composition and its change during decomposition. Initial nutrient composition differed between the species, with lodgepole pine needle litter having significantly higher concentrations of P, Mg and Mn. However, no difference was found for concentrations of N, Ca or K. Increases in concentrations of N, P and K during decomposition were significant in both litter types. For Ca the pattern of concentration changes followed a quadratic function as decomposition proceeded. Concentrations of Mg and Mn decreased in lodgepole pine needle litter. In Scots pine litter there was also an initial decrease, but it was followed by an increase in most incubations. For both Mg and Mn, changes in concentrations during decomposition differed significantly between species. In the late decomposition stages, concentrations of Mg and Mn became similar in both litter types. Nutrient concentrations generated by the models were compared with those of the humus (F and H) layer in the stands. The model was quite accurate in predicting concentrations of N and P for both species and the concentration of Mg for lodgepole pine. By contrast, it was not accurate in predicting concentrations of Ca and Mn. Nutrient release was estimated for the two species using both measured litterfall data and long‐term estimates, and regression models were used to predict concentration changes. Rates of release of P, Mg and Mn in the lodgepole pine stands were found to be about twice as high compared with those in Scots pine. Calcium was also released to a greater extent although the difference was not significant.  相似文献

Abstract

Individual and interactive effects of simulated acidic rainfall and mycorrhizal inoculation on growth and nutrient and water relations of loblolly pine (Pinus taedaL.) and white oak (Quercus albaL.) grown in a loam soil were examined. Seedlings of each species inoculated with basidiospores of the ectomycorrhizal fungus Pisolithus tinctorius(Pers.) Coker and Couch, a known my-cobiont of both loblolly pine and white oak, and uninoculated control seedlings received two simulated rains per week of either pH 3.6, 4.2, or 4.8 for 26 weeks. Higher acidity rainfall reduced the growth but increased mycorrhizal colonization of loblolly pine, while both loblolly pine and white oak exposed to these rains exhibited greater foliar injury. Inoculation with P. tinctoriusincreased growth and reduced foliar injury of both species. Foliar concentrations of P, S, and Cu in loblolly pine and white oak, Ca in loblolly pine, and Fe and Zn in white oak decreased with increasing rain acidity while the Al concentration of both species increased. Higher rainfall acidity also reduced soil pH and Ca and Mg concentrations while increasing soil AI. Foliage of inoculated seedlings of both species had higher N and P concentrations and lower Al concentrations than control seedlings. Following the final rain applications, a drought cycle was simulated by withholding irrigation for two weeks during which seedling xylem pressure potential and soil water potential were measured. One day after cessation of irrigation, xylem pressure potential of loblolly pine that had received pH 3.6 rains was lower than that of other treatments. Thereafter, xylem pressure potential and soil water potential of the inoculated treatment decreased below those of the control treatment in both species. These results suggest that acid deposition is detrimental to juvenile loblolly pine and white oak, but the magnitude of this effect is less than the positive response to ectomycorrhizal inoculation.  相似文献

Nutrient resorption is an important mechanism for nutrient preservation in plants. Variations in nutrient availability can interfere with resorption-regulating mechanisms. Disturbances (such as forest harvest) leading to a loss of organic matter and nutrients in the soil could therefore determine important changes in resorption rates. This paper examines the effect of pine forest harvest on N and P resorption in young common oaks (Quercus robur) living under pine cover over a 4-year study period. The results obtained show a decrease in N-NH4+ concentration in the soil in the 2 years following the forest harvest process. Forest harvest did not affect the edaphic concentration of NO3 and PO43−, which presented relatively low values in both areas. Foliar concentration of N was significantly lower in the areas affected by forest harvest, whereas the differences in the foliar concentration of P varied each year. The mean foliar N/P ratio was greater in the non-harvested areas, but showed possible limitation by P in both harvested and non-harvested sites.  相似文献

Teak (Tectona grandis L.f.) is widely planted in the world due to its high market demand, economic, ecological and social value. Its plantations have mostly been established and expanded into sites that are acidic to severely acidic in southern China. But, there are no available and specific evidence-based nutrient management techniques. To better recognize and understand the relationship between teak tree growth and nutrient content in the foliage and soil and establish nutrient norms are critical to optimally manage these young plantations. We studied the foliar nutrient and soil chemistry in 19 representative teak plantations aged 5–8 years. Regression analysis indicated that the mean annual increment of teak volume was linearly and positively correlated with foliar N, Ca, Fe and B concentrations, with soil base saturation percentage, available P and Zn concentrations, and negatively correlated with soil Al concentration. Only if the Ca and Mg contents in soil were enhanced, could the increase in soil base saturation percentage benefit teak growth. A revised classification of low-and high-yielding stands was established by using a sorting method of principal components over 6 foliar macro and 8 micro elements in a Diagnosis and Recommendation Integrated System (DRIS). Specific DRIS norms for teak plantations in acid soils were derived. The nutrient balance of N, P, K Ca, Mg, Zn, B with Fe or Al, Ca with Mg, and Fe with Al provided a key to promote the growth of teak in acid soils. Meanwhile, soil Zn was also found as a primary trace element that affected teak growth in this study.  相似文献

An investigation of wildfire effects on mineral nutrition of Jeffrey pine (Pinus jeffreyi Grev. & Balf.) along with species comparisons of the nutrition of unburned specimens of this pine to those of unburned California white fir (Abies concolor var. lowiana [Gord.] Lemm.) were conducted in an eastern Sierran mixed conifer stand. Foliar Fe and Mn concentrations were frequently higher and Al was consistently so in burned than in the unburned pine as assessed in six sampling periods distributed over more than two postfire growing seasons while base cation/metallic element molar ratios consisting of Ca/Al, K/Al, K/Mn, Ca/Fe, Mg/Fe, K/Fe, and Ca/Zn were often lower in the former. Foliar N, P, Fe, Zn, and Cu were frequently higher in unburned pine than unburned fir while the reverse proved true concerning K, Ca, Mn, B, and Al; and likewise several molar ratios involving Al and Mn were higher in the former while several involving Fe, Zn, and Cu were higher in the latter. At midstudy, mineral soil in the burned stand portion had lower K but higher S, Mn, and Zn than that in the unburned portion, and the former had several molar ratios that were lower as well.  相似文献

Foliar mineral contents of hemlock stands in coastal and Cascade Mountain zones of the Pacific Northwest were studied to determine the effect of urea fertilization on foliar nutrients. The results demonstrate that mineral concentrations vary among foliage age classes, stands, and zones. Concentrations of N, P, K, Ca, Mg, Al, Mn, Fe, Cu, Zn and B were significantly higher in the Cascade Mountain stands than in the coastal stands. Urea fertilization significantly increased the N content in all age classes of foliage but reduced the concentrations of P, Ca, Mg, Mn, Fe, Al and B, especially in coastal stands. The poor response of coastal stands to urea fertilization, therefore, is probably due to further reduction in already low foliar levels of essential nutrients other than N.  相似文献
