Nine cases of colorectal plasmacytomas diagnosed between 1998 and 2001 were reviewed. Treatment consisted of complete surgical resection when possible. Two dogs had multiple plasmacytomas. Two dogs had local recurrence of the tumor at 5 and 8 months after resection. Two dogs were alive at 20 and 23 months with no recurrences at the time of follow-up. The median survival time was 15 months (range 5 to 33 months). Colorectal plasmacytomas are similar to mucocutaneous plasmacytomas, in that they tend to progress slowly and do not recur with complete excision.  相似文献

Extramedullary plasmacytomas were studied in 29 dogs. The site at which tumors occurred and the age and sex of the dogs were similar to those in previous reports. The skin of the digits, chin, ear, and lip represented the most common (17/29) tumor sites. Males and females were equally represented, and tumors occurred in middle-aged to old dogs (mean age, 9.0 years). A breed predilection was seen in the Cocker Spaniel (n = 7; 24%); Cocker Spaniels represented only 4% (210/4,725) of the submissions during the same period. Tumors were stained with immunohistochemical markers (lambda light chain, K light chain) and thioflavine T. Immunoreactivity was limited to either lambda or K light chains, consistent with a monoclonal plasma cell population. The majority of tumors expressed lambda light chains, consistent with previously reported canine plasma cell dyscrasias. Thioflavine T cytoplasmic fluorescence was seen in the majority (18/29) of plasmacytomas and with inflammatory plasma cells present in control specimens. Other round cell neoplasms (lymphosarcoma, histiocytoma, and mastocytoma) were negative with thioflavine T, indicating that positive staining with thioflavine T was specific for plasma cells (neoplastic and inflammatory). This study confirms by immunohistochemistry that canine extramedullary plasmacytomas disproportionately express lambda light chains and establishes thioflavine T staining as a rapid histochemical method for diagnosis of these tumors.  相似文献

Lesions of a chronic gastroenterocolitis were found in 9 cats of the Persian breed that were euthanized after a prolonged period of bloody diarrhea. Gross lesions consisted of gastrointestinal edema with prominent Payer's patches, multiple grayish nodules, and a few irregular erosions within the colonic mucosa. Microscopically, the changes were composed of degeneration, necrosis, and proliferation of gastric glandular epithelium, dilated intestinal crypts with lymphoplasmacytic cell infiltration of the lamina propria, and in 1 cat, severe transmural necrosis of the colon. With the Giemsa stain, spiral-shaped organisms in the gastrointestinal lumen and intracellularly in the gastric and the colonic epithelium were observed. These organisms could not be cultured. Although the role of these spiral-shaped organisms was not determined, other agents that could explain the disorder were not found.  相似文献

Ventricular preexcitation was diagnosed in 6 dogs and 7 cats examined because of weakness, syncope, or congestive heart failure, and as an incidental finding in 1 dog and 2 cats. Reciprocating tachycardias were documented in 8 of the cases. Six of the cats had a pathologic diagnosis of primary cardiomyopathy. Two of the dogs had an associated congenital heart defect. Reciprocating tachycardias were controlled in 4 cases with digoxin, in 2 cases with propranolol, and in 1 case with quinidine. Conduction through the accessory pathway was altered by quinidine (2 cases), digoxin, and propranolol (1 case each), resulting in a lengthened P-R interval and more normal QRS complex configuration.  相似文献

A case series of nine domestic cats with culture-confirmed Alternaria species infection is presented, with conclusions drawn regarding signalment, clinical signs, treatment and outcome. Middle aged neutered males were over-represented and all presented with cutaneous lesions involving the extremities (nose, pinnae and digits). Lesions were mainly slow-growing, poorly circumscribed nodules or plaques but some also presented as non-healing wounds. A combination of surgical excision with adjunctive medical therapy appeared to be the most successful treatment option but long courses of medical therapy were generally required and recurrence was common.  相似文献

Histopathologic findings in 158 globes obtained from 139 cats by enucleation or at necropsy, with histopathologic diagnosis of uveitis, were compared, and morphology was correlated with clinical and/or histopathologic diagnosis. The most common morphologic feature was a lymphocytic-plasmacytic anterior uveal infiltrate that was either diffuse or nodular; specific cause could not be associated with this nongranulomatous anterior uveitis. In decreasing order of frequency, other common causes of uveitis in cats included feline infectious peritonitis; FeLV-associated lymphosarcoma; trauma; and lens-induced uveitis.  相似文献

Mortality rate in humans infected with Nipah virus (NiV) has been reported as high as 92%. Humans infected with NiV show a widespread multisystemic vasculitis with most severe clinical and pathologic manifestations in the brain, lungs, and spleen. The purpose of this study was to study pathologic and immunohistochemical findings in guinea pigs infected with NiV. Of 28 animals inoculated intraperitoneally, only 2 survived the infection, and most died between 4 and 8 days postinoculation (dpi). Viral antigen with minimal pathologic changes was first detected 2 dpi in lymph nodes and spleen. More severe changes were noted in these organs 4-8 dpi, where pathologic damage had a vasocentric distribution and viral antigen was abundant in vascular endothelium, tunica media, adventitia, as well as in macrophages lining sinuses. The urinary bladder, uterus, and ovaries were also affected with necrosis and acute inflammation. In these organs, immunohistochemical positive staining was intense in blood vessels, epithelial cells, and ovarian follicles. Approximately 50% of the animals that died or were euthanized in extremis had evidence of viral antigen and histopathologic changes in brain, especially involving meninges and ependymal cells, with lesser changes in the neural parenchyma. A unifying feature of the damage for all affected tissues was necrosis and inflammation of the vasculature, chiefly in arterioles, capillaries, and venules. Inoculation of guinea pigs intraperitoneally with NiV produces a disease with considerable resemblance to the disease in humans, but with reduced pulmonary involvement and marked infection of urinary bladder and the female reproductive tract.  相似文献

Clinical, hematologic, and immunophenotypic data were studied in 25 dogs with large granular lymphocyte (LGL) lymphocytosis. Primarily large-breed dogs were affected, with an average age at initial diagnosis of 10 years (range 5-14 years). All dogs had persistent (>4 months) LGL lymphocytosis except for three that were euthanized with aggressive disease. Splenomegaly was reported in 12 of 20 dogs in which splenic size was evaluated. The clinical course was heterogeneous and dogs were divided into four groups based on similar clinical and hematologic findings: acute leukemia (3/25), persistent lymphocytosis with anemia (12/25), persistent lymphocytosis without anemia (8/25), and reactive lymphocytosis (2/25). Immunophenotypes varied within groups but were homogeneous among cells from the same patient except in the two dogs classified as reactive LGL lymphocytosis. Analysis of T-cell receptor (TCR) usage identified three main LGL lineages. TCRalphabeta was expressed in 15/25 (60%) cases. TCRgammadelta was expressed in 8/25 (32%) cases, and 2/25 (8%) cases were CD3-, compatible with NK cells. beta2 integrin expression was distinctive. CD11a was consistently expressed, while CD11b was absent. CD11c was expressed only weakly in 16/25 (64%) cases. The leukointegrin alphadbeta2 was highly prevalent on all LGL lineages, being expressed in 23/25 (92%) cases. Prominent involvement of the spleen, relative sparing of bone marrow, an unexpectedly large proportion of gammadelta T-cell LGLs, and the distinctive beta2 integrin expression pattern on diverse lineages of LGLs suggest the disease arises from unique populations of lymphocytes that preferentially localize in the splenic red pulp.  相似文献

Nine cats that had surgical treatment for obstructive cholelithiasis were reviewed to evaluate clinical signs, diagnostic test results, and outcome after surgery. Common clinical signs included progressive vomiting (9/9), dehydration (9/9), anorexia (6/9), icterus (5/9), and lethargy (4/9). Five cats had a cholecystectomy performed, one cat had a cholecystotomy, and three cats had a biliary diversion procedure. Four of the cats that had a cholecystectomy had no recurrence of vomiting or anorexia. The majority of cats (7/9) had multiple choleliths, which were radiopaque and most commonly composed of calcium carbonate. Seven cats were diagnosed with cholangiohepatitis, and four of these cats did not need long-term medical therapy. Most cats (7/9) survived long term postsurgery (mean, 21 months; median, 24 months) without additional medical therapy, while the two cats with concurrent hepatic lipidosis died. Cholecystectomy appeared to have low morbidity with good clinical success.  相似文献

Feline myeloma-related disorders (MRD) are rare neoplasms of plasma cells. The multistep transformation model of myeloma in humans is based on the premise that plasma cells undergo neoplastic transformation primarily within the intramedullary compartment and that over time they become poorly differentiated and metastasize to extramedullary locations. Historically, diagnostic criteria used for human multiple myeloma have been applied to the cat, with the assumption that feline MRD commonly arises in the intramedullary compartment. Our objectives were to describe the features of feline MRD confirmed by cytology, histopathology, histochemistry, and immunohistochemistry and to categorize these tumors. A priori hypotheses were 1) tumor category predicts survival and 2) cats with well-differentiated tumors commonly have extramedullary involvement in contrast to human myeloma patients. This multicenter, retrospective study identified 26 MRD cases. There was good agreement between histopathologic and cytologic tumor categorization. Histochemistry and immunohistochemistry were shown to be valuable adjunct tests in the diagnosis of MRD. Cats with well-differentiated tumors had increased median survival relative to those with poorly differentiated tumors (254 versus 14 days). We have reported that marked extramedullary involvement at initial clinical presentation is significantly more common in the cat than in human MRD patients. In this study, we demonstrate that cats with well-differentiated tumors more commonly have extramedullary involvement than human myeloma patients with well-differentiated tumors (90% versus 20%, P < 0.0002). These results contrast strongly with the human myeloma model of primary intramedullary neoplastic transformation and suggest that primary extramedullary neoplastic transformation may be more common in feline MRD.  相似文献

A prospective study was performed in 34 fasted healthy cats to describe the normal ultrasonographic anatomy of the cardia and pylorus. Measurements were obtained for the caudal esophageal wall thickness (Ew), cardia wall thickness (Cw), pyloric wall thickness (Pw), thickness of the pyloric muscularis (Mp), length of the thicker part of the proximal duodenal submucosa (Dl). Among the 34 cats, 24 were examined using a linear transducer, and 10 with a microconvex transducer. Ew and Cw could be measured in 70% of the cats when a linear transducer was used, in 100% of the cats when a microconvex probe was used, Pw and Mp could be measured in 100% of the cats whatever probe was used. The submucosa of the most proximal part of the duodenum was thicker in half of the cats in longitudinal section. The muscularis layer of the pylorus was triangular in longitudinal section and thicker than the muscularis of the proximal duodenum. The mean for Ew, Cw, Pw, Mp, and DI was 4.9 mm (SD = 1.1), 5 mm (SD = 0.6), 4.4 mm (SD = 0.6), 2.5 mm (SD = 0.5), and 4.7 mm (SD = 2.38), respectively. Three cats with abnormalities of the cardia and pylorus are also described to illustrate clinical implications.  相似文献

Objective— To report clinical features associated with iatrogenic peripheral nerve injury in dogs and cats admitted (1997–2006) to a referral teaching hospital.
Study Design— Retrospective study.
Animals— Dogs (n=18), 9 cats.
Methods— Patients had acute signs of monoparesis attributable to sciatic nerve dysfunction that developed after treatment. Neurologic examination and electrodiagnostic testing were performed. Surgical therapy was used for nerve entrapment and delayed reconstructive surgery used in other cases.
Results— Of 27 nerve injuries, 25 resulted from surgery (18 with treatment of pelvic injuries). Iliosacral luxation repair resulted in tibial (4 cats) and peroneal (3 dogs) nerve dysfunction. Other causes were intramedullary pinning of femoral fractures (3), other orthopedic surgery (cemented hip prosthesis [2] and tibial plateau-leveling osteotomy [1]), and perineal herniorrhaphy [1]. Nerve injury occurred after intramuscular injection (1 cat, 1 dog). Immediate surgical treatment was removal of intramedullary nails, extruded cement, or entrapping suture. Delayed nerve transplantation was performed in 2 dogs. Within 1 year, 13 patients recovered completely, clinical improvement occurred in 7, and there was no improvement in 7. Five of the 7 dogs that did not recover had acetabular or ilium fracture.
Conclusion— Iatrogenic sciatic nerve injury occurred most commonly during treatment of pelvic orthopedic diseases and had a poor prognosis. Clinical variation in sciatic nerve dysfunction in dogs and cats can be explained by species anatomic differences.
Clinical Relevance— Iatrogenic sciatic nerve injury leads to severely debilitating locomotor dysfunction with an uncertain prognosis for full-functional recovery.  相似文献

Staphylococcus simulans was found to be the most common staphylococcal species present on the healthy skin and in the nares of cats. S. aureus was the most frequent Staphylococcus species in lesions. Most of the S. aureus strains showed the characteristics of the human ecovar. Other strains isolated formed a heterogenic collection in which not less than 13 species were represented. One of these, S. epidermidis, was almost exclusively associated with lesions. It was concluded that coagulase-positive staphylococci are not endogenous to cats. Staphylococci from other sources, most frequently from man, are often associated with lesions in these animals.  相似文献
