First-pass nuclear angiocardiography (FPNA) was performed in 5 normal dogs and in 19 dogs with left-to-right shunting patent ductus arteriosus (PDA). Affected dogs were evaluated before and after an occlusion procedure (surgical ligation or transarterial coil embolization). Two methods of analysis were used to evaluate the pulmonary time-activity curves and assess the magnitude of the shunt. One method involved the calculation of a simple count ratio (C2:C1). The other method used gamma variate modeling to estimate the ratio of pulmonary to systemic blood flow (QP:QS). Values for normal dogs (mean +/- SD) were C2:C1 = 0.39 +/- 0.11 and QP:QS = 1.10 +/- 0.03. Values for affected dogs were C2:C1 = 0.59 +/- 0.17, QP:QS = 2.01 +/- 0.46 before intervention and QP:QS = 1.21 +/- 0.17, C2:C1 = 0.42 +/- 0.12 after intervention. Both methods detected significant differences between normal and affected dogs (QP:QS, t-test, P < .001; C2:C1; t-test; P = .018) and between affected dogs pre- and postocclusion (QP:QS. paired t-test, P < .001; C2:C1, paired t-test, P = .002). However, QP:QS was a better separator of normal from affected animals. First-pass nuclear angiocardiography, by the gamma variate method, may be a useful, adjunct diagnostic test in evaluation of animals with left-to-fight shunting PDA, particularly in animals with residual shunting after an occlusion procedure.  相似文献

Seventy-seven horses with atrial fibrillation (AF) were treated orally with quinidine sulfate (QS) at the University of Pennsylvania, School of Veterinary Medicine, Thirty-seven horses (48%) had adverse reactions to QS, the most common of which were nasal mucosal edema, anorexia, colic, and diarrhea. The mean highest daily QS dose was slightly greater in horses showing toxicity (P less than 0.1) and their conversion rate was less (P less than 0.05). A schedule of gradually increasing QS dose was time consuming, costly and not associated with fewer adverse reactions. Horses were compared by their response to QS: conversion for at least 12 months (Group I; 25 horses); reversion with 12 months (Group II; 8); nonconversion (Group III; 14). All horses with congestive heart failure (CHF) failed to convert. The mean age (P less than 0.05), total QS dose and highest daily QS dose (P less than 0.05) were significantly greater in Group III horses. The mean duration of signs before treatment and occurrence of adverse reactions to QS were greater in horses in Group II and III than Group I. (P less than 0.05). All horses in Groups I and II returned to performance, and many (81%) were successful. Most Group III horses (13/14) are known to have died. It was concluded that most horses with AF uncomplicated by CHF have a good prognosis when treated early with QS. Delayed QS therapy may reduce chances for conversion of AF or increase the probability of reversion.  相似文献

Pituitary adenomas are commonly reported in older horses. The typical clinical signs associated with this condition, also known as equine Cushing's disease (ECD), are related to increased adrenocorticotropin (ACTH) production resulting in hyperadrenocorticism. The primary purpose of this study was to determine whether plasma ACTH concentrations differed between cushingoid and healthy horses. The second objective was to determine the effects of blood sample handling techniques on ACTH concentrations. A commercial human ACTH radioimmunoassay (RIA) was used to quantify equine plasma ACTH. Intra-assay and interassay variations, as well as dilutional parallelism were determined during the RIA validation. Plasma ACTH concentrations were evaluated in a group of healthy equids composed of 18 horses and 9 ponies, and in 22 equids with a clinical diagnosis of hyper adrenocorticism (11 horses and 11 ponies). The mean plasma ACTH concentrations in healthy horses and ponies, (18.68 ± 6.79 pg/mL (mean ± SD) and 8.35 ± 2.92 pg/mL, respectively), were significantly different (P = .009). The mean plasma ACTH concentration in horses and ponies with ECD, (199.18 ± 182.82 pglmL and 206.21 ± 319.56 pg/mL, respectively), were significantly higher than the mean ACTH concentration in the control animals (P < .001). Plasma ACTH concentrations appeared to be a sensitive and specific indicator of ECD in horses and ponies. ACTH concentrations measured in plasma samples kept at room temperature (19°C) as long as 3 hours after blood collection were not statistically different from those of samples kept at 1°C. A total of 16 mature healthy horses (body weight: 515.3 ± 37 kg [mean ± SD]) were used in two experiments to determine (1) how psyllium affects postprandial blood glucose and insulin concentrations, and (2) how psyllium affects blood glucose and insulin concentrations after an intravenous glucose infusion. Psyllium was fed along with a grain and hay ration (given twice daily) for 60 days. Treatments were as follows: (1) 90 g psyllium/d, (2) 180 g psyllium/d, (3) 270 g psyllium/d, (4) an isocaloric, no supplemental psyllium control. Pre- and postprandial blood samples were collected on day 60 for experiment 1, and blood samples collected before and after intravenous glucose infusion were analyzed for experiment 2. In experiment 1, horses fed with psyllium for 60 days had lower (P < .01) mean postprandial blood glucose concentrations and there was a treatment × time effect for glucose (P < .001) and insulin (P = .03). Plasma glucose was lower at 90 minutes (P = .05) and 120 minutes (P < .001) after a meal in horses fed with psyllium as compared with an isocaloric control. Postprandial serum insulin concentrations were lower at 90 minutes (P = .002) and 300 minutes (P < .001) after a meal in horses fed with psyllium as compared with an isocaloric control. In experiment 2, peak glucose concentrations were lower (P = .01) in horses fed with psyllium for the previous 60 days compared with untreated horses and there was a treatment by time effect for glucose (P = .05). Peak blood glucose response was lower (P = .01) in horses fed with psyllium as compared with an isocaloric control after intravenous glucose infusion, whereas peak insulin concentrations and average insulin concentrations remained similar. Psyllium fed daily for 60 days alters postprandial glycemia and insulinemia in normal, nonobese, and unexercised horses.  相似文献

Concentrations of the non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drug (NSAID) alclofenac were determined by a sensitive high performance liquid chromatographic procedure in plasma and urine of horses following oral administration of a dose of 3 g. In plasma, alclofenac was present in detectable concentrations for 72 h. The plasma disposition in individual horses was best described by a bi-compartmental model with two successive rate constants ka1= 0.05 ± 0.06 h-1 and ka2= 0.06 ± 0.01 h-l. Alclofenac half-lives t ½ and t 1/2β were 1.0 ± 0.8 h and 6.9 ± 1.5 h, respectively. Maximal concentrations (38.9 ± 16.2 μg/ml) were obtained after 8.5 ± 2.4 h. Alclofenac was detected in urine for at least 48 h after dosing. The percentage of the dose excreted as unchanged alclofenac in 12 h was very low (0.68 ± 0.19%), total (free + conjugated) alclofenac accounted for 2.16 ± 0.55% of the dose.  相似文献

Objective— To determine the effect of continuous infusion of lidocaine on fecal transit time in normal horses.
Study Design— Experimental randomized cross-over study.
Animals— Healthy horses (n=6).
Methods— Barium-filled microspheres were administered to horses by nasogastric intubation and feces were collected every 2 hours for 4 days. A bolus of 2% lidocaine (1.3 mg/kg) was administered randomly, followed by a continuous infusion of lidocaine (0.05 mg/kg/min) for 3 days or an equivalent volume of saline. The washout period was 10 days. Variables assessed included defecation frequency, weight of feces produced, intestinal transit time (number of microspheres observed on radiographs), fecal moisture content, borborygmus score, heart and respiratory rate, and signs of lidocaine toxicity (e.g., ataxia, CNS depression).
Results— During the first 24 hours of lidocaine administration, mean (±SD) fecal output (10.8±6.9 kg) was decreased compared with controls (15±4.9 kg). Mean (±SEM) time for passing 50% of the barium-filled microspheres was shorter in controls (42±1.13 hours) compared with the lidocaine group (50±1.32 hours).
Conclusions— Continuous infusion of lidocaine increases the transit time of feces in normal horses.
Clinical Relevance— Clinicians need to be aware of the effects of using a continuous infusion of lidocaine on the transit time of feces in normal horses, with a potential for exacerbating those effects when combined with drugs that decrease motility and in horses with medical colic (e.g., impaction) or where a diagnosis has not been made.  相似文献

Pharmacokinetics of chloramphenicol in the neonatal horse   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1  
Chloramphenicol sodium succinate was administered as an intravenous bolus (50 mg/kg) to eight foals which weighed 49–57 kg (mean ± 1 standard deviation = 53.19 ± 2.66) each, and were 1–9 days (4.5 ± 2.56) of age. The drug was rapidly distributed and followed first-order elimination. Mean pharmacokinetic values were: zero-time serum concentration (C0) = 36.14 μg/ml (±14.80); apparent specific volume of distribution ( Vd ) = 1.614 1/kg (±0.669); and elimination rate constant ( K ) = 0.7295 h-1 (±0.3066) which corresponds to a biological half-life ( t 1/2) = 0.95 h. These values do not differ greatly from those reported for adult horses and ponies.
A suspension of chloramphenicol was administered by nasogastric tube (50 mg/kg) to a second group of seven foals which weighed 49 to 57 kg (51.34 ± 2.82) each and were 1 to 7 days (4.43 ± 1.90) of age. A mean peak serum chloramphenicol concentration of 23.97 μg/ml (±7.06) was achieved 1.14h (±0.63) after administration. The bioavailability of this preparation was 83.27 percent.  相似文献

The pharmacokinetics of thiopentone sodium administered intravenously as a single dose (11 mg/kg) were studied in acepromazine pre-medicated horses and ponies in which anaesthesia was maintained with either halothane (Group 1) or isoflurane (Group 2). The results showed that the disposition kinetics of thiopentone in horses and ponies were best described by a three-compartment open model. In plasma, a very short initial distribution phase in both horses and ponies, half-life 1.4 ± 1.2 min (mean ± SD) and 1.3 ± 0.7 min, respectively, was obtained, which was followed by a second comparatively slower redistribution phase, half-life 16 ± 12 min and 11 ± 5 min, respectively. The volume of distribution for the drug was large, especially in the ponies which received isoflurane (1127 ± 86 ml/kg). compared to the horses which received halothane (742 ± 89 ml/kg). The drug had a somewhat shorter elimination half-life in the horses (147 ± 21 min) than in the ponies (222 ± 44 min), but no obvious difference in clearance of the drug was observed between the horses (3.5 ± 0.5 ml/min/kg) and ponies (3.6 ± 0.8 ml/min/kg).  相似文献

Objectives— To determine the relationship between plasma lactate concentration and colonic viability and survival in horses with ≥360° volvulus of the ascending colon.
Study Design— Retrospective study.
Animals— Horses (n=73) with ≥360° volvulus of the ascending colon.
Methods— Medical records (January 2000–November 2005) of all horses examined for colic at Michigan State University Veterinary Teaching Hospital were reviewed. Horses were included only if plasma lactate concentration was measured preoperatively and a diagnosis of ≥360° volvulus of the ascending colon was confirmed by surgery or necropsy. Non-survivors were only included if the ascending colon was evaluated histopathologically. Logistic regression analysis was used to model the relationship between lactate, colonic viability, and survival.
Results— Of 73 horses, 61 were discharged. Mean (±SD) plasma lactate concentration was significantly lower in survivors (2.98±2.53 mmol/L) compared with non-survivors (9.48±5.22 mmol/L; odds ratio [OR]=1.628, 95% confidence limit [CI]=1.259–2.105). Plasma lactate concentration was significantly lower in horses with a viable colon (3.30±2.85 mmol/L) compared with horses with a non-viable colon (9.1±6.09 mmol/L; OR=1.472, 95% CI=1.173–1.846). Plasma lactate concentration <6.0 mmol/L had a sensitivity of 84% and a specificity 83% for predicting horse survival.
Conclusions— Our results demonstrate a strong association between plasma lactate concentration at the time of hospital admission and outcome in horses with ≥360° volvulus of the ascending colon.
Clinical Relevance— Plasma lactate concentration may help predict colonic viability and horse survival after ascending colon volvulus in horses.  相似文献

The third carpal bone (C3) was collected from both forelimbs of 27 Thoroughbreds. On the basis of age, training, and history, specimens were assigned to 1 of 5 groups: yearling, untrained horses (group 1, n = 4); 2- to 3-year-old, untrained horses (group 2, n = 7); trained 2-year-old horses (group 3, n = 6); trained 3-year-old horses (group 4, n = 6); and 3-year-old, trained horses with carpal pathologic features (group 5, n = 4). A transverse section of subchondral bone 5-mm thick was cut in a precise fashion 10 mm below the proximal articular surface of all specimens. After high-detail radiography was done, indentation testing was performed on the proximal surface of the section at points 5 mm apart. The stiffness of the subchondral cancellous bone was determined from the slope of the load vs displacement curve. Topographic plots of stiffness measurements were compared with radiographs of each specimen. Point determinations were averaged to derive measures for the radial and intermediate facets, and for regions 5, 10, 15, and 20 mm from the dorsal margin of C3. Area fraction (1-p; p = porosity) was measured for the radial and intermediate facets, using an automated image analysis system. Significant (P less than 0.05) increases in stiffness and area fraction were found in the C3 from trained horses (groups 3 to 5), compared with untrained horses (groups 1 to 2). REASONS FOR PERFORMING STUDY: Clostridium difficile has been associated with acute colitis in mature horses. OBJECTIVES: To survey C. difficile colonisation of the alimentary tract with age, occurrence of diarrhoea and history of antibiotic therapy; and to study the occurrence and survival of C. difficile in the environment and antimicrobial susceptibility of isolated strains. METHODS: A total of 777 horses of different breeds, age and sex were studied. Further, 598 soil samples and 434 indoor surface samples were examined. Antimicrobial susceptibility of 52 strains was investigated by Etest for 10 antibiotics. RESULTS: In horses that developed acute colitis during antibiotic treatment, 18 of 43 (42%) were positive to C. difficile culture and 12 of these (28%) were positive in the cytotoxin B test. Furthermore, C. difficile was isolated from a small number of diarrhoeic mature horses (4 of 72 [6%]) with no history of antibiotic treatment, but not from 273 healthy mature horses examined or 65 horses with colic. An interesting new finding was that, in normal healthy foals age < 14 days, C. difficile was isolated from 1/3 of foals (16 of 56 [29%]). All older foals (170) except one were negative. Seven of 16 (44%) nondiarrhoeic foals treated with erythromycin or gentamicin in combination with rifampicin were also excretors of C. difficile. On studfarms, 14 of 132 (11%) outdoor soil samples were positive for C. difficile in culture, whereas only 2 of 220 (1%) soil samples from farms with mature horses were positive for C. difficile (P = < 0.001). By PCR, it was demonstrated that strains from the environment and healthy foals can serve as a potential reservoir of toxigenic C. difficile. The experimental study conducted here found that C. difficile survived in nature and indoors for at least 4 years in inoculated equine faeces. The susceptibility of 52 strains was investigated for 10 antibiotics and all were susceptible to metronidazole (MIC < or = 4 mg/l) and vancomycin (MIC < or = 2 mg/l). CONCLUSIONS: C. difficile is associated with acute colitis in mature horses, following antibiotic treatment. Furthermore, C. difficile was isolated from 1 in 3 normal healthy foals age < 14 days. POTENTIAL RELEVANCE: Strains from healthy foals and the environment can serve as a potential reservoir of toxigenic C. difficile.  相似文献

Endoscopic tracheal lavage cytology was evaluated before and 24 hours after standing transendoscopic laser surgery of the upper airway in 18 horses (9 patients undergoing Neodymium:yttrium aluminum garnet [Nd:YAG] surgery and 9 non-patient horses undergoing argon surgery). Paired endoscopic tracheal lavages taken 24 hours apart were evaluated in six control horses to determine if the lavage technique influenced the cytology. After 24 hours, no inflammation was noted in three, mild inflammation was noted in six and suppurative inflammation in four surgically treated horses. Five of the surgically treated horses underwent general anesthesia prior to baseline tracheal lavage and had evidence of inflammation in pre-laser lavage samples; this made it difficult to assess the true incidence of laser-induced inflammation in horses in this report. Five of six control horses had a normal tracheal lavage at 24 hours. Six normal adult horses had baseline tracheal mucous clearance rates determined using scintigraphy followed one week later by tracheal mucous clearance rates two hours after either standing transendoscopic Nd:YAG ventriculectomy or standing transendoscopic argon cauterization of a 2 × 2 cm area of dorsal pharynx. The horses were left in pasture for three weeks, followed by a second baseline and post-laser tracheal mucous clearance rate using the opposite laser technique. There was no significant difference between the first and second baseline measurements. The order of laser treatments had no effect on the results obtained. There was no significant difference between the baseline tracheal mucous clearance rates (mean 1.65 ± 0.65 cm/min) and tracheal mucous clearance rates post-laser surgery (mean 1.62 ± 1.21 cm/min). Neither laser technique altered tracheal mucous clearance rates significantly (argon mean 1.57 ± 0.59 cm/min and Nd:YAG mean 1.67 ± .68 cm/min.  相似文献

REASONS FOR PERFORMING STUDY: An objective measure of neck, back and croup pain is needed in horses with musculoskeletal injuries, vague upper limb lameness or poor performance. OBJECTIVES: To establish mechanical nociceptive thresholds (MNTs) within the axial skeleton and evaluate the effects of subject status and ridden exercise. METHODS: Thirty-six mature horses (10 nonridden; 26 actively ridden) were used to assess MNTs evoked by a pressure algometer (PA) with a 1 cm2 rubber plunger tip at 62 midline and bilaterally symmetrical anatomical landmarks along the axial skeleton. Pressure was applied at a uniform rate of application until a local avoidance reaction was noted. The repeatability of 3 consecutive measurements was evaluated. Left-to-right comparisons and the effects of subject status and ridden exercise on MNTs were assessed. RESULTS: MNTs were repeatable and increased in a cranial-to-caudal gradient within the axial skeleton. Typically, there were no significant left-to-right differences. Within-horse variability was less than between-horse variability. Higher MNTs were measured in young, heavy, non-Thoroughbred, castrated males, and in horses that were ridden and actively exercised. CONCLUSIONS AND POTENTIAL RELEVANCE: PA provides an objective, noninvasive, and repeatable tool to measure mechanical nociception in horses. MNTs vary in horses with differing subject status and ridden exercise level.  相似文献

Antigen-induced airway hyperresponsiveness in allergic horses has previously been demonstrated when clinical signs of acute airway obstruction were apparent, as a consequence of exposure of animals to hay and straw for variable periods of time, and repeat measurements of hyperresponsiveness have been made no earlier than 1 week after challenge. In the present study airway responsiveness to methacholine has been measured in normal horses and allergic horses in clinical remission before and 24, 48 and 72 h after a hay and straw challenge of fixed, short, duration (7 h). Correlations between early increases in interpleural pressure and hyperresponsiveness have also been investigated. As in other studies, the mean airway responsiveness of groups of normal and allergic horses in clinical remission was not significantly different. The responsiveness to methacholine of allergic, but not normal, horses was increased after antigen challenge and was significantly greater than that of normal horses at 48 and 72 h after challenge (log PD 8 cm: -0.77 ± 0.28 vs. 0.27 ± 0.14 at 48 h and -0.6 ± 0.25 vs. 044 ± 01 at 72 h; P < 0.05). There was also a significant correlation between interpleural presssure at the end of the 7-h challenge in allergic horses and the increase in responsiveness to methacholine at 24, 48 and 72 h. These results demonstrate that antigen induces an increase in airway responsiveness in allergic horses that persists for up to 3 days and which may be linked to the initial increase in interpleural pressure.  相似文献

An extralaryngeal approach to partial arytenoidectomy in the horse was developed by in vitro experiments on isolated larynges and then on intact equine cadavers. The goals of the approach were to preserve the laryngeal mucosa, eliminate the need for a laryngotomy or tracheotomy, and minimize postoperative complications. The new approach was evaluated in seven horses with normal upper respiratory tracts. Left laryngeal hemiplegia was surgically created, and, after a 30-day convalescence, left partial arytenoidectomy was performed using an extralaryngeal approach. The left-to-right hemilaryngeal ratio was calculated before and after left recurrent laryngeal neurectomy and 60 days after partial arytenoidectomy. Left partial arytenoidectomy was successfully completed in all horses without performing a laryngotomy or tracheotomy. Preservation of the laryngeal mucosa (6/7 horses) and apparent stabilization of the adjacent soft tissue (6/7 horses) was achieved. In one horse, a 1 -cm laryngeal mucosal tear healed without complication, and in another some collapse of adjacent soft tissue occurred when a retention suture failed. The mean left-to-right hemilaryngeal ratio was significantly increased compared to horses with left laryngeal hemiplegia, but it remained significantly less than the pre-recurrent laryngeal neurectomy ratio (p < .05). Coughing, aspiration, and airway narrowing were not observed. Partial arytenoidectomy could be reliably performed through an extralaryngeal approach in horses with a normal underlying arytenoid cartilage with preservation of the laryngeal mucosa.  相似文献

Recent outbreaks of equine herpes virus type-1 infections have stimulated renewed interest in the use of effective antiherpetic drugs in horses. The purpose of this study was to investigate the pharmacokinetics of valacyclovir (VCV), the prodrug of acyclovir (ACV), in horses. Six adult horses were used in a randomized cross-over design. Treatments consisted of 10 mg/kg ACV infused intravenously, 5 g (7.7–11.7 mg/kg) VCV delivered intragastrically (IG) and 15 g (22.7–34.1 mg/kg) VCV administered IG. Serum samples were obtained at predetermined times for acyclovir assay using high-performance liquid chromatography. Following the administration of 5 g VCV, the mean observed maximum serum ACV concentration ( C max) was 1.45 ± 0.38 (SD) μg/mL, at 0.74 ± 0.43 h. At a dose of 15 g VCV, the mean C max was 5.26 ± 2.82 μg/mL, at 1 ± 0.27 h. The mean bioavailability of ACV from oral VCV was 60 ± 12% after 5 g of VCV and 48 ± 12% after 15 g VCV, and did not differ significantly between dose rates ( P  > 0.05). Superposition suggested that a loading dose of 27 mg/kg VCV every 8 h for 2 days, followed by a maintenance dose of 18 mg/kg every 12 h, will maintain effective serum ACV concentrations.  相似文献

Thirteen horses of Thoroughbred or Standardbred breeding were used to study the effect of dietary fish oil supplementation on blood lipid characteristics. Horses were assigned to either fish oil (n = 7) or corn oil (n = 6) treatment groups for 63 d. The fish oil contained 10.8% eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA) and 8% docosahexaenoic acid (DHA). Each horse received timothy hay and a mixed-grain concentrate at rates necessary to maintain BW. Oil (corn or fish) was top-dressed on the concentrate daily at a rate of 324 mg/ kg of BW. The n-6:n-3 ratio was approximately 3.6:1 for horses receiving the corn oil diet and 1.4:1 for horses receiving the fish oil diet. Horses were exercised 5 d/wk during the study. Before supplementation, there was no difference in the concentrations of any serum fatty acids between the 2 treatment groups. The mean basal concentrations of EPA and DHA on d 0 were 0.04 and 0.01 mg/mL, respectively. After 63 d, horses receiving the fish oil treatment, but not those receiving the corn oil treatment, had increased concentrations of EPA and DHA (P <0.05). Fish oil supplementation for 63 d also increased the concentrations of C22:0, C22:1, and C22:5 fatty acids (P <0.05). Overall, horses receiving fish oil had a decreased concentration of n-6 fatty acids (P <0.05) and a greater concentration of n-3 fatty acids (P <0.01), resulting in a lower n-6:n-3 fatty acid ratio after 63 d (P <0.05). Serum cholesterol concentrations increased (P <0.05) during the supplementation period in horses receiving the corn oil but not in horses receiving the fish oil. Compared with horses receiving corn oil, horses receiving fish oil had lower serum triglycerides at d 63 (P <0.05). These results demonstrate that 63 d of fish oil supplementation at 324 mg/kg of BW was sufficient to alter the fatty acid profile and blood lipid properties of horses receiving regular exercise.  相似文献

Contact neodymium:yttrium aluminum garnet (Nd:YAG) laser transscleral cyclophotocoagulation (TSCP) was performed on 23 eyes of 16 horses for treatment of glaucoma. The mean highest preoperative IOP was 51 ± 17 mmHg. Follow-up evaluation was available for 19 eyes 1 day after surgery, 14 eyes from 1 to 2 weeks, 16 eyes from 4 to 6 weeks, 9 eyes from 12 to 16 weeks, and 10 eyes greater than 20 weeks after laser treatment. The mean intraocular pressure (IOP) the day following surgery was 34 ± 13 mmHg. The mean IOP for each follow-up period was: one to two weeks postoperative, 23 ± 9 mmHg; four to six weeks, 24 ± 7 mmHg; 12–16 weeks, 28 ± 10 mmHg; and  20 weeks, 22 ± 9 mmHg. IOP measurements were significantly different from pretreatment values for all follow-up intervals except for weeks 12–16 ( P < 0.05). Treatment success was defined as maintenance of IOP < 30 mmHg. Treatment success was achieved in 93%, 88%, 78%, and 70% of the treated eyes at the 1–2 weeks, 4–6 weeks, 12–16 weeks, and the  20 weeks re-evaluation, respectively. No significant difference was found between the number of eyes visual at presentation (52.2%) and visual at 20 weeks (60%). The most common laser complications were conjunctival hyperemia (21.7%) and corneal ulcers (13.0%). Results of this study indicate that Nd:YAG TSCP is an effective method of controlling IOP and preserving vision in horses with glaucoma. An effective Nd:YAG laser protocol for TSCP in the equine glaucomatous eye is a power setting of 11 W, duration of 0.4 s, applied 5 mm posterior to the limbus at 60 sites, resulting in a total energy dose of 264 J.  相似文献

Purpose:  To describe the protocol and appearance of fluorescein angiography (FA) in normal horses.
Animals:  A total of 25 healthy horses aged between 5 and 15 years.
Materials and Methods:  The horses were sedated with 15 µg/kg detomidine and 50 µg/kg butorphanol and dilated with topical tropicamide 1%. All angiograms were recorded after intravenous bolus injection of 10 mg/kg of fluorescein sodium solution.
Results:  Two successive angiographic phases could be discerned: the choriopapillary phase, starting at 46.95 ± 9.48 s, and the retinal vascular phase, starting at 47.79 ± 10.38 s. The retinal vascular phase was divided in three parts: filling phase , maximum fluorescence point , and fading phase . During the filling phase, the dye progressed into the retinal vessels, obtaining maximum fluorescence at 59.79 ± 10.39 s, termed the maximum fluorescence point. The fading phase started immediately following the maximum fluorescence point. During this phase, vascular fluorescence decreased to complete reduction at 74.76 ± 9.81 s. Also, areas of delayed choroidal filling, the presence of short retinal vessels in the ventral region of the optic disc, and a particular filling of the optic disc were also observed.
Conclusions:  The normal angiographic sequence was described in horses. FA may be a useful method for studying the integrity of the blood–retinal barriers in horses.  相似文献

The aim of this study was to investigate the potential haemodynamic effects of valvular insufficiency and recurrent airway obstruction (RAO) in horses with atrial fibrillation (AF). Therefore in ten healthy horses (group 1) and 40 horses with AF a clinical examination, a lung examination, echocardiography and right heart catheterization for measurement of intracardic and pulmonary pressures were performed. According to the clinical findings the horses with AF were subdivided into 4 groups (group 2: AF; group 3: AF/valvular insufficiency; group 4: AF/RAO; group 5: AF/valvular insufficiency/RAO). Most of the horses of group 3 and 5 suffered from two valvular insufficiencies (mitral and tricuspid valve insufficiency: n=11, mitral and aortic valve insufficiency: n=2). The remaining horses showed a single mitral (n=6), tricuspid (n=2) or aortic valve insufficiency (n=1) or more than two valvular insufficiencies (n=4). In group 2 right ventricular mean pressure (RVPm) was higher than in group 1 and 4 (P<0.025); diastolic right ventricular pressure was higher than in group 1; PWP was higher than in group 1 and group 4; PDP was lower compared to group1. Compared to group1 in group 3 left atrial diameter (LA) was greater; the PAPs was higher and the PDP lower (P<0.05). In group 4 RVPm and PWP was lower compared to group 2. In group 5 LA, fractional shortening and diastolic left ventricular diameter were greater, PWP and PAPs were higher and PDP lower compared to group1. Twenty six of the 40 horses with AF (65%) were treated. Successful cardioversion to sinus rhythm occurred in 15 horses (58%). Therapy was successful in 50% of the treated horses of group 2 and 3, in 67% of the treated horses of group 4 and in 63% of the treated horses in group 5. In conclusion the presence of valvular insufficiency or RAO influences the haemodynamics of horses with AF.  相似文献
