Eight malting cultivars of barley released from 1944 to 1998 in Argentina were sown in two growing seasons to evaluate the effect of breeding on malting quality. An adequate grain weight and screening percentage as in the older varieties were maintained in the recent releases. The grain protein concentration decreased in the modern cultivars together with a decreased in C-and an increased in B-hordein. These results were achieved without a clear trend through the time. Malt extract was increased by 0.054% per year in the period analysed and the most important contribution in the quality improvement was the introduction of Beka (known as a high quality cultivar released in Europe) in1966. There was not a clear trend in the breeding process to obtain more stability between years in the quality attributes, at least, in the characteristics analysed in the present study. Conversely, malt extract was less variable and this tendency was observed through the years of release of the cultivars. 利用28对SSR引物对包括22份野生材料,8份耐盐碱材料,21份优质高产甘啤系列品种(系)材料和9份日本早熟材料在内的60份啤酒大麦品种资源的遗传多样性及其亲缘关系进行分析。结果表明,所用28对引物,有25对有多态性;聚类结果表明这些材料遗传相似系数分布在0.4792~0.9948之间。在遗传相似系数0.63的水平上,这些材料聚类为2大类,下分7个亚类。从聚类结果看出,不同类型材料基本各自聚为一类,表明不同类型品种(系)内遗传差异较小;不同类型品种(系)间遗传差异较大,杂交可能会产生较强的杂种优势和较高的产量潜力。  相似文献

Naked (hulless) barley was neglected by plant breeders in Europe during the period of intensive crop improvement in the 20th Century, but it is now receiving renewed interest due to the potential health benefits it can convey. Very few naked barley cultivars have been developed for modern UK or European agricultural systems, in contrast to the wide diversity of naked barley in Asia. Prior to initiating any breeding programme, phenotyping in UK field conditions is needed to assess the value of existing exotic landraces. This article reports such a programme where naked barley landrace lines were grown alongside modern cultivars and unimproved UK hulled landrace lines over 4 years at a research station in North Wales and assessed for yield and agronomic traits. Multivariate analysis of the traits suggested that accessions clustered by region of origin. Himalayan landrace lines formed Eastern and Western clusters while Japanese and Korean landrace lines were distinct from these. European naked barleys were found to be closest to European hulled barleys, suggesting that the distinctiveness of the Asian naked barley landrace lines was due to origin rather than the naked grain trait per se. The only agronomic trait that could be attributed to naked grain was poorer crop establishment, but some Himalayan landrace lines showed vigorous seedling growth. Modern lines of naked barley from Syria gave superior yields to old UK hulled barleys, indicating that there is potential for breeding modern UK cultivars of naked barley.  相似文献

以江苏省近60年来各阶段具有代表性的12个粳稻品种(含超级稻)为材料,依据种植推广年代结合株型和基因型将其分为20世纪50年代、60年代、70年代、80年代、90年代和2000年以后6个类型,研究了品种演进过程中产量和形态生理的变化特征。结果表明,随着品种演进产量逐步提高,其原因主要是总颖花量的增加,而这又主要由于每穗粒数的显著增多。自早期的50年代品种,结实率逐步提高,但90年代品种和2000年以后的超级稻品种,结实率有下降的趋势,穗数和千粒重无明显变化。随着品种演进,生物产量和收获指数同步提高,以抽穗后增加的量尤为明显,主要生育期根干重、根冠比、根系氧化力和叶片光合速率显著增加,但现代超级稻品种的根系活力和叶片光合速率在结实期下降较快。品种改良提高了抽穗期总叶面积、有效叶面积、高效叶面积和粒叶比,还增加了穗长、着粒密度、一次和二次枝梗数目。由20世纪50年代到90年代品种,植株高度降低,而2000年以后的超级稻品种显著上升,升至120cm左右。抽穗期顶三叶叶片角度则随品种更替显著降低。上述结果说明随品种演进,粳稻的农艺、生理性状和产量均有明显改良,但超级稻较低的结实率限制了其产量潜力的发挥。  相似文献

Summary Methods for assessing malting quality in barley breeding were evaluated for their precision, including variation between different batches, analysts and barley samples. The barley characters measured were grain moisture, ground grain moisture (two methods), grain weight, steep moisture, malt moisture (two methods), malt yield, malt nitrogen, malt soluble nitrogen, Kolbach index, malt diastatic power, malt -amylase, malt -glucanase, wort refractive index, hot water extract, extract yield, wort reducing sugars, wort total carbohydrates, wort -amino nitrogen and wort total nitrogen. This study gives estimates of breeding progress achieved in winter barley (Hordeum vulgare L.) since the 1960′s in grain yield and the change in several morphological traits for seventeen historically important cultivars: 12 six-rowed and 5 two-rowed, grouped into four epochs according to the period of major commercialization in Italy. All genotypes were evaluated across a range of soil fertility and climatic environments. The modern six-rowed cultivars have shown a consistent increase in tillers/m2 and seeds/spike (16 and 28 %, respectively) over the local populations. In the modern two-rowed cultivar ‘Igri’ the increase in tillers/m2 and seed weight were, respectively, 20 and 14 % snd seeds/spike decreased by 20 % over the local populations. The modern six-rowed and two-rowed cultivars have less lodging, are earlier and shorter than the old varieties and local populations. In the last quarter of a century, the breeding progress for gram yield has been increased by 52 and 74 kg/ ha/year or 0.75 and 1.1 % per year respectively, for six-rowed and two-rowed genotypes: while the gain in biomass yield in the same period was not uniform for six-rowed cuitivars and increased by 64 kg/ha/ year or 0.46 % in two-rowed cultivars. The grain yield improvement in the modern six-rowed and two-rowed cultivars is the result of a better partitioning of the photosynthetic products into the grain.  相似文献

Culture medium composition is critical for the successful induction of microspore division in vitro. The present experiments have focused on a relatively neglected area of cell and tissue culture research, namely the carbohydrate component used in the medium. Three spring barley genotypes were cultured on a medium which was modified by replacing sucrose with the following carbohydrates (6 % w/v): maltose, fructose, malt extract, galactose and a glucose (3 % w/v)/fructose (3 % w/v) mixture. Both maltose and malt extract were superior to sucrose in their capacity to induce green plantlet differentiation from microspores. The concentrations of both sucrose and maltose were also varied. Overall the response of anthers on maltose based media was higher than on sucrose based media. Furthermore, a concentration of maltose m the range 6—12 % w/v produced a higher frequency of green plants than a low concentration (1—3 % w/v). The effect of maltose based media on germplasm of direct relevance to barley breeders was also tested. The cultivar ‘Blenheim’ was shown to be very responsive and this genetic factor was transmitted to the F1 hybrid. The frequency of haploid to diploid regenerants was not consistent over genotypes, but in general there were more haploid than diploid regenerants. The implications of these results for barley breeding are discussed.  相似文献

Retrospective analyses may provide an understanding of unexploited genetic potential and indicate possible pathways for future yield improvement. The objectives of this study were to present maize(Zea mays L.)yield trends and plant traits changes for maize cultivars from the 1950s to the 2000s in China. Trials were conducted at three locations in 2007 and 2008, and at four locations in 2009. Twenty-seven single hybrids, four double-cross hybrids, and four open-pollinated varieties, were grown at three densities at each location each year. 56% of total yield gain was contributed to breeding from 1950 to 2000. New hybrids had more resistance to compound stress. Levels of response of all hybrids to higher-yielding environments were similar, and greater than that of OPVs. All maize cultivars showed morphological changes for all characteristics tested in a volatile manner from 1950 to 2000, except for relatively stable leaf number. ASI decreased and tolerance to root lodging improved, which were enhanced at higher plant densities. There were no trends for other characteristics at higher densities. Shorter maturity, smaller plant size and more tolerance to root and stalk lodging will be required for further yield improvement. Chinese maize yield improvement can benefit from agronomic strategies at higher plant densities.  相似文献

Summary Spring barley is an important feed crop in eastern Canada, and the development of high-yielding, high grain protein cultivars is desirable. This study was conducted to assess the impact of breeding on the yield and protein aspects of cultivar development, and to identify related changes in plant characteristics which may have been altered over time. A 3-year field experiment was conducted to evaluate twenty six-rowed spring barley genotypes representing the majority of cultivars developed from 1910 to 1988 for eastern Canada. The yields of barley cultivars released from 1935 to 1988 increased at a rate of about 0.03 t ha-1 yr-1, and showed no evidence of having reached a plateau. Increases in yield were associated with higher total dry matter production and harvest index, reduced plant height and increased lodging resistance. No consistent change in main stem or tiller yield components was observed. Grain protein concentration decreased progressively with time, especially with the newer cultivars. Reduction in grain protein concentration was not associated with lower protein content on a per grain basis, but rather with an increase in the amount of non-structural carbohydrate per grain. Total plant and grain N accumulation showed positive trends with time. No trends were observed for N harvest index, apparent post-heading N uptake, N retranslocation, and retranslocation efficiency. Thus, while the newer cultivars accumulated more total and grain N, proportional N partitioning to the grain was not altered.  相似文献

The genetic gain of oats in Italy over the past 40 years was evaluated using 14 cultivars belonging to three different groups: (i) five cultivars derived from local populations at the beginning of the oat breeding in Italy; (ii) four foreign cultivars, introduced in Italy in the 1980s; (iii) five modern cultivars, selected through specific breeding programmes. The genotypes were tested for 2 years in three locations characterised by different climatic conditions and agricultural practices; furthermore in one location in Southern Italy, irrigated and rainfed plots were compared. Genetic gain was estimated equal to 3.6 g m−2 y−1 based on eight environments. The performance of the most recent cultivars was high under both irrigated and rainfed conditions, showing a good adaptation of these genotypes to both fertile and drought prone environments. Finally, yield increase in oats was found to be negatively correlated with plant height and positively correlated with test weight and seed weight.  相似文献

In Europe, during the 1960s, mainly two-rowed spring barley was used for malting. Traditionally, spring malting barley was produced in regions with moderate temperatures and adequate rainfall throughout the growing season. Winter malting barley, on the other hand, was mostly grown in the milder arid and semiarid parts of Europe. Due to global climatic changes and its higher yield, winter malting barley is now increasing in acreage in the traditional spring barley regions. Our study included a comparative analysis of several grain and malt characters of the winter and spring malting barley grown under the agroecological conditions of the Vojvodina Province, Yugoslavia. One thousand grain weight was shown to be approximately the same for both growth habits, whereas winter malting barley proved to have a higher hectoliter mass than the spring one. In those years that were less favorable for spring barley production, winter malting barley had better quality characters, namely a higher fine extract content, a better malt modification, and a lower malt protein content. Barley landraces from the western Mediterranean area have not been thoroughly exploited by modern breeding. This study aims at assessing the agronomic value of a core collection of lines derived from landraces of Spanish origin and to compare them with sets of successful old and modern cultivars. The agronomic performance of a set of 175 barley genotypes, comprising 159 landrace‐derived lines and 26 cultivars, was evaluated in a series of 10 field trials, carried out over 3 years and several locations. The most relevant trait of the landraces was higher grain yield at low production sites than cultivars, which may be related with better ability to fill the grain under stressful conditions. On the other hand, lateness, excessive plant height and lodging were negative traits frequently found in the landraces. Large genotype‐by‐environment interaction (GEI) for grain yield was detected, related partly with differences between germplasm groups, probably indicating local adaptation. GEI was also associated with the interaction of heading time and powdery mildew resistance with temperature.  相似文献

Summary The objective of this study was to evaluate traits which can facilitate and improve selection for grain yield of spring barley. Five experiments were conducted in different environments to measure grain yield and yield related traits of breeding lines and exotic varieties. Differences for rate of canopy expansion were significant and offer the opportunity to select for a high weed suppressing potential but there was no relation to grain yield. Dry matter yield/m2 at anthesis and its water-soluble-carbohydrate content were not correlated with grain yield/m2 and number of grains/m2. Variation in biomass among breeding lines with a similar development and plant height was small. Biomass standardized for plant height was stable across environments and showed a good correlation with number of grains and grain yield. The contribution of pre-anthesis assimilation to grain yield was only important under low yielding experimental conditions, but the differences among the genotypes for this trait were inconsistent. It may be difficult to select genotypes with a high potential contribution of pre-anthesis assimilation to grain yield.  相似文献

Variation in seed production and its components was investigated between and within four cultivars of the pasture grass Setaria sphacelata, in two experiments over two years, as a basis for future cultivar improvement. The study sought to determine the basis for the considerable differences in seed production of the four cultivars Nandi, Narok, Solander and Kazungula, to determine the extent of genetic variation in the four cultivars in attributes which contribute to seed yield, and to investigate genotypic consistency in seed production over years and seasons. Each experiment comprised 50 genotypes of each cultivar. In the first experiment, plants were harvested a set number of days after median flowering date whereas in the second experiment, which was unreplicated, each genotype was harvested a set number of days after it had flowered. In the first experiment, seed yields were generally highest for Kazungula, lowest for Narok and intermediate for Nandi and Solander. All measured attributes contributing to seed yield exhibited a high order of variation between and within cultivars, but the basis for the large difference in seed yield per plant between cultivars was tiller fertility rather that total tiller number. Averaged over the four harvests, there was a six fold to > 100–fold intra-cultivar genetic range in seed production, associated with differences in tiller fertility, which were associated with differences in date of first flowering. Broad sense heritability for seed yield averaged 0.68 for the four cultivars and showed little change over the four harvests. Genotypes which produced high seed yields in summer were also more productive of seed in autumn and the 0ore productive genotypes in the first year were also more productive in the second year. Cultivars differed in the relative importance of factors which contributed to the high seed yield of high-yielding genotypes. In the second experiment, genotypes with a high seed yield also generally had the highest tiller fertility, even though all genotypes were harvested the same number of days after first flowering. Within-cultivar correlations in seed yield between the two experiments were generally significant and the elite 20% of genotypes from this experiment had 1.2–2.9 times the seed yield of the same genotypes with a very different harvesting regime in the first experiment. It is concluded that opportunities exist in all four cultivars for improvement in seed production and that the selection criterion offering the best opportunity for advance would be fertile tiller number. In Narok, Solander and Nandi, this would result in increased tiller fertility, whereas in Kazungula, it would result in an increase in total tiller number. Energy efficiency can be increased either by increasing the production per m2 or by reducing the energy input per m2, e.g. by reducing temperature set-points in the greenhouse. So far, in Dutch glasshouse tomatoes energy efficiency was almost exclusively raised by yield increases. To study the role of tomato breeding in this production increase, yield and underlying components of 7 cultivars released between 1950 and 2002 were studied. Furthermore, variation in temperature response between cultivars was studied. In three experiments yield and biomass production of in total 11 cultivars were evaluated at two temperature regimes (17/15°C and 21/19°C day/night temperature set-points). Breeding has resulted in a remarkable increase in production. Under current conditions, yield of modern cultivars was on average 40% higher than yield of ‘Moneymaker’, released in 1950. This increase in production resulted from a higher light use efficiency. Although the fraction of assimilates partitioned to the fruits showed small differences between cultivars, this trait was not related to year of release. Furthermore, more recently introduced cultivars produced larger fruits rather than more fruits. All cultivars responded similar to both temperature regimes for all important characteristics, limiting the possibilities of using existing cultivars in a breeding program for improved yield at lower temperatures.  相似文献

The objective of this study was to characterize grain yield and adaptation of barley cultivars released in recent decades in north-eastern Spain. Ten six-rowed and 10 two-rowed barley genotypes were grown in eight environments. Mean yields varied among environments between 1.7 and 5.8 tha?1. New releases showed higher mean yields and were specifically adapted to nonlimiting growing conditions. The average genetic advances were estimated as 40.7 and 32.9 kg ha?1 years?1 for two- and six-rowed genotypes, respectively, in the four most productive environments. Old genotypes, with lower overall grain yields, were specifically adapted to the poorer sites. A negative genetic gain, estimated as -14.8kg ha?1 years?1. was reorded for six-rowed culiivars in the four poorest sites. No significant association was observed between heading date and year of release. Variations in carbon isotope discrimination (Δ) were examined to assess whether changes in adaptation could be partially explained by shifts in the genoiypic transpiration efficiency (TE) over time, in the most favourable environments, new releases showed the highest grain yields and carbon isotope discrimination values (Δ). By contrast, older cultivars had constitutively? lower Δs and therefore higher TEs. These results suggest a genetic association between low TE and yield potential and specific adaptation to stress-free conditions so that selection for yield under favourable conditions could have resulted in an indirect downward genetic shift in the TE of modern cultivars.  相似文献

Historically, wheat yields in drought‐prone Australian environments have been consistently increasing for over a century. There is currently an agreement that approximately half of that increase is attributable to breeding programmes, but their physiological basis remains poorly documented. In this investigation, we hypothesized that limited whole‐plant transpiration rate (TR) under high atmospheric vapour pressure deficit (VPD) could result in advantageous water conservation and crop yield increase under south Australian conditions. Therefore, TR response to VPD was measured in the 0.9–3.2 kPa range for a group of 23 wheat cultivars that were released from 1890 to 2008. Consistent with a water‐conservation hypothesis, all genotypes displayed a VPD break point (BP) in TR with increasing VPD such that TR was limited at VPD above a BP of about 2 kPa. The BP and slope of TR with increasing VPD above the break point were correlated with the year of release, although the changes were in different directions. Such changes in these transpiration parameters were independent of plant leaf area and only marginally correlated with Zadok's stages. These results indicated that selection over 120 years by breeders for yield increase unconsciously resulted in genotype selection for the expression of the limited‐TR trait.  相似文献

The grain protein content (GPC) in barley is influenced to a high degree by the environment and this may cause problems if the barley is intended for malt. Barley used for malt should have a GPC not exceeding 11.5% under any environmental condition. It is, therefore, important to breed for cultivars with low and less environmentally influenced GPC. In a 2-year field experiment seven spring barley (Hordeum vulgare L.) cultivars, with varying GPC stability, were grown at two or three nitrogen application rates, respectively, to determine the differences in leaf area development, N-uptake, yield components, GPC and GPC stability. The time course of leaf area index was followed by measuring light transmission and light reflectance. Total shoot N and biomass and yield components were determined by sub-sampling an area of 3×0.25 m−2 at heading and at maturity. No clear differences were observed in leaf area development between cultivars with low or high GPC stability, but two of the three stable cultivars showed an earlier reduction of the leaf area and less variance in leaf area index during grain filling. Cultivars with low GPC stability tended to be late, had more biomass accumulated at heading, a larger number of ears per m2, and a higher yield and a lower GPC than more sensitive cultivars. From the results of a factor analysis an ideotype for low and stable GPC is postulated. This type is characterized by late heading, many tillers and many seeds per ear. It is suggested that breeding for a prolonged vegetative period would reduce the environmental effects on GPC.  相似文献

Grain protein accumulation during grain development was studied as a function of defoliation at anthesis in barley ( Hordeum vulgare L.) genotypes grown under pot culture and non limiting nitrogen conditions. The data indicates that per cent grain protein did not decrease proportionally despite 50 % or more decrease in grain yield per plant. These data support the contention that shrivelling need not result in proportional increase in grain protein %. The data also suggests that accumulation of grain protein and carbohydrate during the grain development may not be negatively associated. The data also brings about the importance of grain protein yield per plant as a useful parameter for breeding high grain protein genotypes.  相似文献
