  1. Pelagic spawning riverine fish (pelagophils) spawn in free‐flowing river habitats with downstream drift of eggs and larvae but the spatial scale is often unknown, and this constitutes a major ecological knowledge gap.
  2. In the arid Darling River in south‐eastern Australia, the present objectives were: (i) to determine the potential downstream dispersal distance of young golden perch (Macquaria ambigua); and (ii) to evaluate whether provision of environmental water enhanced dispersal of young fish from Menindee Lakes to the lower Darling River (LDR) while also cueing further spawning in downstream lotic reaches.
  3. Golden perch spawned in unregulated lotic tributaries on a flood pulse and larvae drifted or dispersed >1,600 km downstream and entered large ephemeral productive floodplain lake nursery habitats as fully scaled fingerlings.
  4. Planned releases of environmental water cued golden perch spawning in the LDR and enabled juvenile fish to disperse downstream from the Menindee Lakes nursery into receiving populations in the LDR, Great Darling Anabranch, and southern Murray River, with some fish potentially completing an active migration of >2,100 km by age 1 year.
  5. The Darling River case study highlights the need for a system‐scale approach to the conservation management of pelagophilic fish, along with multi‐year perennial flow strategies to improve ecosystem integrity in large rivers globally.

  1. Horseshoe crab population sizes and trends have been previously studied using surveys of spawning adults and counts of eggs from surface (top 5 cm) and deep (20 cm) sediment samples. The correlations between surface and deep eggs were studied at two locations, Delaware Bay and Jamaica Bay, USA, and the correlations between egg densities and spawning counts were examined in Jamaica Bay.
  2. There were significantly higher densities of eggs in deep sediments than in surface sediments. Only about 10% of the variability in surface egg density was explained by deep egg density. The numerical patterns between surface and deep eggs were similar between Delaware Bay and Jamaica Bay and across sampling dates.
  3. Nearly 20% of the deep samples in the combined data from Delaware Bay and Jamaica Bay with an egg density of ≥100,000 m−2 had zero surface eggs. Therefore, the use of surface eggs as an indicator of habitat suitability and spawning intensity may seriously underestimate the importance of a beach for spawning horseshoe crabs.
  4. When paired with nearest survey date, Jamaica Bay spawning indices did not predict deep or surface egg densities. This may be related to a temporal mismatch between survey methods, the extreme overdispersion (patchiness) of the eggs, and/or the dynamics of egg distribution after exhumation.
  5. Both egg density and spawning surveys can provide useful data on habitat suitability for horseshoe crabs and can offer excellent opportunities for student and citizen scientist engagement. More labour is required for egg surveys than spawning surveys because of the time required to sample, sort, and enumerate the eggs.

  1. Conservation of riverine fish often aims to improve access to spawning grounds and restore longitudinal connectivity by removing migration barriers, and involves substantial investments. However, these investments also enable non‐native predators to invade upstream into spawning areas and potentially adversely affect the recruitment of threatened freshwater fish through egg or fry predation.
  2. Detecting egg predation is often challenging. Visual inspections of fish gut contents may underestimate predation of soft materials such as eggs and fry, which limits the discovery of predators preying upon these life‐stages. DNA‐based detection assays may offer a more sensitive tool to assess predation of soft materials.
  3. A conservation issue was confirmed by developing and applying a species‐specific DNA‐based detection assay: invasive round goby (Neogobius melanostomus) prey on the eggs or fry of the threatened common nase (Chondrostoma nasus) in Switzerland.
  4. DNA‐based detection assays were also developed for five other valuable native fish species, including endangered salmonid and cyprinid river spawners. The applicability of the assays was confirmed in a series of laboratory and field feeding experiments involving eggs and fish tissue. In addition, this work provides a guiding framework for conservation managers regarding the use and applicability of different DNA‐based detection approaches for gut content analysis.
  5. The results of this study could inform local conservation measures – such as temporary reductions in the density of round goby at spawning sites prior to spawning – and demonstrate how targeted application of species‐specific molecular markers may advance freshwater fish management.

  1. Single nucleotide polymorphism (SNP) markers in anchovy (Engraulis encrasicolus) egg samples were analysed to detect their origin on a small spatial scale (200 km) by assigning genotypes to adult anchovy stocks. The novelty of this work is the application of a rapid high‐throughput method for genotyping each single anchovy egg, in a single execution, using a set of 96 genome‐wide SNPs in a dynamic array system with microfluidic technology (Fluidigm 96.96).
  2. The existence of two ecotypes in E. encrasicolus had already been identified based on SNP polymorphism in the Atlantic Ocean and in the Mediterranean Sea, showing that habitat type (offshore versus coastal/estuarine) is the most important component of genetic differentiation among populations of anchovy.
  3. In this work, anchovy egg genotypes from areas of the Western Mediterranean were assigned to adult populations. Only two localities in which adult anchovies were sampled represented donor populations for the coastal/estuarine egg genotypes. Although some degree of mixing among the hauls could exist, the assignment of egg groups to adult populations led to distinguishing the contributions of distinct ecotypes to new wild generations. We can conclude that the high rate of egg dispersion caused by marine currents and the different degrees of local retention could explain the genetic heterogeneity observed in the adult populations, where eggs from neighbouring spawning sites tend to mix.
  4. The results highlight that this technique represents a new and useful tool for addressing evolutionary questions, breed recognition, assignment, and connectivity assessment of individual eggs, and anchovy population dynamics, for the management of stocks.

Abstract The effectiveness of live-algae replacement diets for the conditioning and spawning success of adult Manila clam, Tapes philippinarum (Adams and Reeve), was assessed. Two dried diets were tested: a diet of dried Tetrasetmis suecica (Kylin) Butch, and a mixed diet of dried T. suecica (70%) and dried Cyclotella cryptica Reimann et al. (30%). These diets were compared with three live diets: Skeletonema costatum (Grev.) Cleve, Dunaliella tertiolecta (Butcher) and T. suecica. An unfed group was used as a control. The same ration (dry weight) of food was supplied for all groups at 6% of the dry meat weight per day. The broodstock were conditioned for 7 weeks. After 4 weeks none of the animals was ready to spawn. After 6 weeks all the diets promoted spawning and after 7 weeks the unfed group also spawned. It seems that dried algal diets are effective for conditioning and spawning of Manila clams, as the dry meat weight, condition index and fecundity of broodstock fed these diets were significantly greater than for unfed animals. However, the fecundity and proportion of parental lipid released in the eggs of clams conditioned with dried diets was lower than for the clams conditioned with live algae.  相似文献

  • 1. The conservation of small aquatic habitats is fundamental to preserving diversity in Mediterranean freshwater ecosystems. Amphibians are particularly endangered, as their chemical world, represented by both abiotic and biotic scent trails, is highly susceptible to environmental changes.
  • 2. Breeding site fidelity in the northern spectacled salamander, Salamandrina perspicillata, an Italian endemic vertebrate, was investigated with respect to the ability of this species to locate its own home water rather than that from other places. The choice of aquatic habitat for spawning was investigated in dark conditions by comparing different types of experimental water (home breeding water vs. breeding water of allopatric populations vs. mineral water vs. distilled water). Fifty‐eight reproductive females were collected at four breeding sites in the Lepini Mountains (Latium, central Italy). The number of eggs spawned by each specimen in the different types of experimental water was counted.
  • 3. The very large majority of the eggs were found in the home breeding water. When the eggs counted in the other types of water were compared, no differences were found.
  • 4. These findings revealed that in the northern spectacled salamander the choice of spawning site was affected by the scent trail of its own aquatic habitat. This new information has improved knowledge of the auto‐ecology of S. perspicillata, thus contributing to strategies for its conservation.

Oceanographic and predation processes are important modulators of fish larvae survival and mortality. This study addresses the hypothesis that immature Norwegian spring‐spawning herring (Clupea harengus), when abundant in the Barents Sea, determine the capelin reproduction success through consumption of Barents Sea capelin (Mallotus villosus) larvae. Combining a hydrodynamic model and particle‐tracking individual‐based model, a realistic spatio‐temporal overlap between capelin larvae and predatory immature herring was modelled for the summer seasons of 2001–2003. Capelin larvae originating from western spawning grounds became widely dispersed during the summer season, whereas those originating from eastern spawning grounds experienced a rapid drift into the southeastern Barents Sea. Herring caused a 3% mortality of the capelin larvae population in 2001 and a 16% mortality in 2003, but the effect of predation from herring on capelin larvae was negligible in 2002. Despite a strong capelin larvae cohort and a virtual absence of predatory herring, the recruitment from the capelin 2002 year class was relatively poor from a long‐term perspective. We show that the choice of capelin spawning grounds has a major impact on the subsequent capelin larvae drift patterns, constituting an important modulator of the capelin larvae survival. Variation in drift patterns during the summer season is likely to expose the capelin larvae to a wide range of hazards, including predation from young cod, sandeel and other predators. Such alternative predators might thus have contributed to the poor capelin recruitment during 2001–2003, leading to the collapse of the capelin stock in the subsequent years.  相似文献

We report the spontaneous spawning, larval development, survival rate and larval growth rate patterns observed in the green and red variants of the Japanese sea cucumber Apostichopus japonicus. The green variant adapted well to the captive conditions in the Sasebo City Fisheries Center and spontaneously spawned without any induction or stimulation. One hundred individual green variants spawned nine times and produced approximately 155 million eggs. In contrast, 50 individual red variants showed poor adaptation to captivity and spawned spontaneously only three times, producing about 12 million eggs. Larval development and growth rate pattern was almost identical between the two variants of A. japonicus. In contrast, the larval survival rate for the green variant was over 90% up to the auricularia stage (10 days), but much low (less than 30%) for the red variant. We demonstrated that the green variant of A. japonicus was easier to rear in captivity. This provides a useful method for maintaining sustainable harvests and eventually contributing to restocking and sea ranching of the existing population. Further studies about optimal ecological conditions and behaviour are needed to improve egg production and survival rate of the red variant of A. japonicus.  相似文献

Large pond-reared Penaeus monodon were used in three maturation and spawning trials lasting 60 days. One group of prawns was fed a fresh diet only; a second group was supplied a fresh diet combined with a formulated pelleted diet; a third group of prawns received the formulated diet only. Total maturation (N = 66 and 55) and spawning events (N = 63 and 48) were much greater for prawns receiving only the fresh diet, and the combined fresh with formulated diets, respectively. Prawns receiving only the formulated diet matured only 12 times, and spawned 11 times. Prawns fed a fresh diet produced significantly more eggs than those given a formulated diet alone. No significant differences were seen in eggs produced per spawning event, % fertilization, % hatch or % metamorphosis from egg to protozoea. Female prawns exhibited greater mortality than did males, while females on the fresh diet only had greater mortality than did other females, presumably due to greater handling and other stress factors. Female prawns on a combined diet had lower mortality than other females. The formulated diet used is suitable for supplementation, but not as a sole maturation food.  相似文献

We have numerically modeled the advection and diffusion of sardine eggs and larvae to investigate the larval transport processes of Japanese sardine from the spawning grounds by the Kuroshio.
The results indicated that the offshore drift current induced by the winter monsoon and the location of the spawning ground have significant effects on the survival of the Japanese sardine. The contribution of the drift current, the distance of the spawning ground from the Kuroshio axis, and the eddy diffusivity to the larval retention in the coastal area is approximately expressed by the following equation: where R is the retention rate in the coastal area, a the variance of initial distribution of eggs, T the time after the eggs were spawned, – V0 the velocity of the wind-induced offshore current, y0 the distance of the center of the spawning area from the Kuroshio axis, and K the coefficient of horizontal eddy diffusivity.
The year-to-year variation in larval survival rates stimulated by the two-dimensional model are consistent with those estimated previously by using field data of egg and larval abundance during 1978–1988.  相似文献

Fertilized eggs of the Nile tilapia (Oreochromis niloticus L.) spawned in freshwater, were removed from mouthbrooding females, 1 day post-spawning and artificially incubated at elevated salinities. At 6 days post-hatching, mean survivals of 85.5, 84.4, 82.5, 56.3, 37.9, 20.0 and 0% were recorded for broods incubated at salinities of 0, 5, 10, 15, 20, 25 and 32 ppt, respectively. Fertilized eggs exhibited a 96-h median lethal salinity (MLS-96) of 18.9 ppt, a value identical to that of 7- to 120-day-old fry and fingerlings. Fertilized eggs exhibited a higher median survival time (ST50 = 978 min) than 7- to 395-day-old fry and fingerlings (ST50 = 28.8–179.0 min). The salinity tolerances of fry spawned at various salinities and fry spawned in freshwater but hatched at various salinities, were determined using the median survival time (ST50), mean survival time (MST) and 96 h-median lethal salinity (MLS-96) indices. For comparative purposes, fry spawned and hatched in freshwater were acclimatized to various salinities and their salinity tolerance determined. Fry salinity tolerance progressively increased with increasing salinity of spawning, hatching, or acclimatization. However, at equivalent salinity, early exposure (spawning) produced progeny of comparatively higher salinity tolerance than those spawned in freshwater and hatched at elevated salinity. Similarly, at equivalent salinity, progeny spawned in freshwater but hatched at elevated salinity exhibited higher salinity tolerance than those spawned and hatched in freshwater, then acclimatized to an elevated salinity. The utility of these methods of early salinity exposure toward the saltwater culture of tilapias is discussed.  相似文献

The performance of different and expedite spawning induction methods was compared on samples of both mature wild and captive Paracentrotus lividus sea urchin populations. Thermal, saline and mechanical shocks, emersion during different periods of time, addition of con-specific gametes and different KCl concentrations were tested. Percentage of spawned sea urchins, mean number of released eggs, percentage of males that released more than 200 million spermatozoa, and survival after 5 days were the variables analysed. Results indicate that both thermal and saline shocks were ineffective methods to trigger spawning. Mechanical shock and addition of con-specific gametes were able to promote spawning but with a reduced number of released gametes. Emersion for a period of 3 h induced spawning with 100% broodstock survival but longer periods up to 12 h, although increasing the number of spawners can cause significant broodstock mortality. An injection of 1-mL intra-peristomial KCl was an expedite method to obtain P. lividus gametes, but high mortalities were always recorded and was related with excessive KCl concentrations. When there is need for a small number of gametes, the mechanical shock technique can be considered since led to 100% survival. When large spawnings are required, the emersion procedure can be a viable method, but further investigation must be carried out to assess the best time period to obtain broodstock full survival.  相似文献

ABSTRACT:   The spawning bed selection of herring Clupea pallasii off Minedomari, Atsuta, on the west coast of Hokkaido, Japan, is discussed in relation to the topography of the rocky shore and wave conditions during the spawning season. From 1998 to 2003, herring have spawned their eggs mainly on the leaves of the seagrass Phyllospadix iwatensis Makino in almost the same site on the rocky shore off Minedomari in the Atsuta area. The site is connected to a valley-like feature offshore. Wave conditions were surveyed at Minedomari during the spawning season in 2000 and the wave height was estimated from 1998 to 2003, except for in 2000, using the correlation of wave height between Minedomari and Ishikari Bay New Port, approximately 18 km south-west of Minedomari. Herring spawned under calm conditions, during which the wave height was approximately 0.5 m off Atusta and Aoshima and was 0.18–1.28 m off Minedomari. The distribution of water particle velocity on the sea bottom surface as a result of ocean waves off the Minedomari area, which was estimated based on the wave height and the topography of the coast, suggested herring could swim easily into the shallower area along the valley-like feature off Minedomari. Therefore, topographical features are thought to be one of the reasons why herring have used Minedomari as a spawning bed. Additionally, seepage of freshwater from the bottom, which was observed in this area, could also be the reason why herring spawn in Minedomari repeatedly.  相似文献

In August 2019, visual inspection of intertidal zones of the Gulf of Maine (ME, USA) revealed young and adult wild blue mussels, Mytilus spp., in Alley Bay (Jonesport area) with the distinctive L-shaped shell deformity (LSSD) and green spots (GS) in the mantle and adductor muscle. LSSD is a characteristic sign of current or previous mussel infection by photosynthetic unicellular alga from the group Coccomyxa, while GS are algal colonies. Based on these findings, this study represents the first report of infection signs by pathogenic Coccomyxa-like algae in mussels from the coastal waters of the Northeastern United States, providing a base for future large scale monitoring of the alga in the region.  相似文献

Abstract. Observations of spawning by uninjured and injured Atlantic salmon, Salmo salar L., indicated that uninjured fish usually spawned in the outlets, or inlets, to pools and on coarse bottom sediments, whereas injured females spawned in different places. Frequently, the spawning sites lay in very shallow water with a slow current and on a bed of sand or fine gravel. Subsequent excavation of the spawning redds revealed that about 28% of the eggs laid by uninjured females were recovered, compared with only about 8% of those laid by injured females. This difference was significant (P < 0·01).  相似文献
