This is the first study to investigate the occurrence, risk factors and hematological findings of hemoplasmas in dogs from Chile. Complete blood count and 16S rRNA conventional PCR for Mycoplasma spp. were performed in 278 blood samples from rural (n = 139) and urban (n = 139) dogs in Valdivia. Real time 16S rRNA PCR (qPCR) allowed species identification. Mycoplasma spp. occurrence was 24.8%. ‘Candidatus M. haematoparvum’ (CMhp) was identified in 12.2% and Mycoplasma haemocanis (Mhc) in 11.9% dogs. It was not possible to identify species in two Mycoplasma spp. samples by qPCR. Sequencing allowed identifying one of them as ‘Candidatus M. turicensis’ (CMt). Frequency in rural localities was higher (41.7%) than in urban (7.9%). Rural locality, maleness and older age were risk factors for hemoplasmosis. Hemoplasma-positive dogs had a higher total protein. This is the first report of Mhc, CMhp and CMt in dogs from Chile, with a high occurrence in rural localities.  相似文献

Four distinct cat hemoplasma species are recognized worldwide. However, this is the first study to investigate the prevalence, risk factors, and hematological findings of hemoplasmas in cats from Chile. Complete blood count and 16S rRNA real-time PCR for cat hemoplasma species were performed in 384 blood samples from domestic cats in Valdivia, Chile. Among the 384 samples the species-specific prevalence was as follows: ‘Candidatus Mycoplasma haemominutum’ (7.8%), Mycoplasma haemofelis (4.4%), ‘Candidatus Mycoplasma turicensis’ (1%), ‘Ca. M. haemominutum’ + M. haemofelis (0.78%), ‘Ca. M. haemominutum’ + Ca. M. turicensis’ (0.52%), ‘Ca. M. haemominutum’ + Candidatus Mycoplasma haematoparvum’ (0.26%) and ‘Ca. M. haemominutum’ + M. haemofelis + Ca. M. haematoparvum’ (0.26%). Male sex, older age, outdoor access, and FIV status were risk factors for hemoplasmosis. Mycoplasma haemofelis-positive cats had higher mean corpuscular volume and monocyte count. Four hemoplasma species circulate in the cat population of Valdivia. ‘Candidatus M. turicensis’ and ‘Ca. M. haematoparvum’ have been reported for the first time in Chilean cats.  相似文献

Entamoeba histolytica, a protozoan parasite that affects humans and other primates all over the world. It is a common waterborne pathogen in endemic areas that have fecal oral transmission cycle. The aim of the present study was to examine the prevalence of E. histolytica and other Entamoeba species cysts in three different dog populations. Fecal samples from 600 dogs were collected and processed to detect Entamoeba cysts using the triple fecal test (light microscopy) and fecal antigens of E. histolytica were detected using a fecal antigen ELISA (TechLab E. histolytica II). Because it is impossible to differentiate E. histolytica from Entamoeba dispar and E. moshkovskii, using light microscopy we referred to all cysts morphologically consistent with E. histolytica as E. histolytica/dispar/moskovskii to reflect this uncertainty. Samples from 197 household dogs without clinical signs, 122 samples from household dogs exhibiting clinical signs of diarrhea, dysentery and vomiting and 281 stray dogs with no specific clinical signs were examined. Entamoeba histolytica-like cysts were observed in 94 (15.6%, 95% CI = ±3.88) by triple fecal test microscopy and E. histolytica antigens were demonstrated in 66 (11%, 95% CI = ±4.41) by fecal antigen ELISA in 600 fecal samples. Significant differences (P  0.05) in prevalence were found between the three populations. Twenty (10.1%, 95% CI = ±7.86) and 11 (5.6%, 95% CI = ±7.70) of 197 fecal samples from household dogs without clinical signs were positive by microscopy and by antigen ELISA, respectively. Twenty-nine (23.8%, 95% CI = ±6.58) and 23 (18.8%, 95% CI = ±7.81) of 122 the fecal samples from household dogs with clinical signs were positive by microscopy and by antigen ELISA, respectively. Forty-five (16.01%, 95% CI = ±5.62) and 32 (11.3%, 95% CI = ±6.38) of 281 fecal samples from stray dogs were positive by microscopy and by fecal antigen ELISA, respectively. Dogs from the youngest age group (6 months to 1 year) were more likely to be E. histolytica antigen positive than were dogs from the other two older age groups, with a significant difference (P  0.05) between all age groups. Statistically, no significant (P  0.05) difference of prevalence was seen in male and female dogs. The local dogs had the highest prevalence rate of E. histolytica antigens (36 of 246, 14.2%, 95% CI = ±6.32) followed by imported breeds (11 of 115, 9.5%, 95% CI = ±10.4) and crossbred (19 of 239, 8.3%, 95% CI = ±7.47), indicating a significant (P  0.05) trend of positivity between various breeds of dogs. These findings suggest that dogs may play an important role in the epidemiology of this pathogen.  相似文献

Our objective was to determine cow- and herd-level risk factors associated with seropositivity for Neospora caninum in a large number of randomly selected Canadian dairy herds, controlling for important confounding variables and co-infections with bovine leukemia virus (BLV), bovine viral diarrhea virus (BVDV) and Mycobacterium avium subspecies paratuberculosis (MAP). Serum samples were obtained from 30 randomly selected cows, where available, in 240 herds using monthly milk testing, within 6 of 10 provinces, and these samples were tested for antibodies against BLV, MAP and N. caninum using commercially available ELISA test kits. Five unvaccinated cattle >6 months old from each herd were tested for antibodies to BVDV using virus neutralization. Most herd-level predictors were obtained through personal interviews with questionnaires administrated to each farm manager. A mixed logistic-regression model was built using N. caninum serostatus at the cow-level as the outcome variable, with herd as a random effect and province as a fixed effect. A BLV seropositive cow was 1.50 times more likely to be seropositive for N. caninum than a BLV-seronegative cow, and this was the only cow-level variable to remain in the final model. Regarding herd-level variables, with “no on-farm dogs” as the baseline, “presence of dogs but not known to eat placentas and/or fetuses” increased the odds of seropositivity for N. caninum by a factor of 1.66. For “presence of dogs known to eat placentas and/or fetuses”, the odds ratio (OR) was 2.75, demonstrating a dose–response relationship. “Using embryo transfer” (OR = 0.69), “asking for a BVDV-negative test before introducing an animal” (OR = 0.30), “using monensin in dry cows” (OR = 0.71), and “heifers having nose-to-nose contact with calves” (OR = 0.73) were all dichotomous variables negatively associated with seropositivity for N. caninum. “Number of milk cows on the farm” (OR = 0.99), and “area (acres) used for forage production” (OR = 0.99) were continuous variables negatively associated with N. caninum seropositivity.  相似文献

Giardia has a wide range of host species and is a common cause of diarrhoeal disease in humans and animals. Companion animals are able to transmit a range of zoonotic diseases to their owners including giardiasis, but the size of this risk is not well known. The aim of this study was to analyse giardiasis prevalence rates in dogs and cats worldwide using a systematic search approach. Meta-analysis enabled to describe associations between Giardia prevalence and various confounding factors. Pooled prevalence rates were 15.2% (95% CI 13.8–16.7%) for dogs and 12% (95% CI 9.2–15.3%) for cats. However, there was very high heterogeneity between studies. Meta-regression showed that the diagnostic method used had a major impact on reported prevalence with studies using ELISA, IFA and PCR reporting prevalence rates between 2.6 and 3.7 times greater than studies using microscopy. Conditional negative binomial regression found that symptomatic animals had higher prevalence rates ratios (PRR) than asymptomatic animals 1.61 (95% CI 1.33–1.94) in dogs and 1.94 (95% CI 1.47–2.56) in cats. Giardia was much more prevalent in young animals. For cats >6 months, PRR = 0.47 (0.42–0.53) and in dogs of the same age group PRR = 0.36 (0.32–0.41). Additionally, dogs kept as pets were less likely to be positive (PRR = 0.56 (0.41–0.77)) but any difference in cats was not significant. Faecal excretion of Giardia is common in dogs and slightly less so in cats. However, the exact rates depend on the diagnostic method used, the age and origin of the animal. What risk such endemic colonisation poses to human health is still unclear as it will depend not only on prevalence rates but also on what assemblages are excreted and how people interact with their pets.  相似文献

BRCA1 is a high-penetrance breast cancer susceptibility gene and BRCA1-associated breast cancer has a high familial prevalence that is more common among certain populations of humans. A similar high prevalence also exists for canine mammary tumors (CMTs) and the objective of this study was to determine the breed-related differences in malignant CMTs. Comparative analyses of the expression of various prognostic factors for CMTs, including BRCA1, estrogen receptor (ER), progesterone receptor (PR), and human epidermal growth factor receptor-2 (HER-2) were conducted on 139 malignant CMT cases from five breeds with the highest prevalence of CMTs in Korea.Significant breed-related differences were observed in the expression of BRCA1 (P = 0.003), histological grade (P = 0.038), and extensive lymphatic invasion (P = 0.042). The Shih Tzu breed had the highest proportion of dogs with malignant CMT and strong overexpression of BRCA1. Cytoplasmic and membranous expression of BRCA1 was associated with the ER negative (P = 0.004), PR negative (P = 0.046), and triple negative (ER, PR, and HER-2 negative; P = 0.016) phenotype and the basal-like molecular subtype (P = 0.019) in Shih Tzu dogs. Since these features are similar to BRCA1-related human breast cancer, dogs with BRCA1-associated CMT, particularly Shih Tzu dogs, may serve as a suitable spontaneous model, although additional molecular studies are needed.  相似文献

We have performed a survey of Babesia canis prevalence within group of dogs living in Southern and Western Slovakia. Blood samples and sera from 217 dogs, including individuals suspected of having babesiosis, were examined by nested PCR-RFLP, light microscopy and indirect fluorescence antibody test (IFAT). The detection of B. canis DNA revealed the highest number of infected dogs in the region of Nové Zámky, with 23 B. canis-positive blood samples (35.4%, n = 65), followed by an area close to Komárno (both areas of Southern Slovakia), where 1 dog out of 52 collected (1.9%) had detectible B. canis DNA in the blood stream. The serological method revealed an opposing pattern, with only 3 dogs (4.8%, n = 63) sampled at Nové Zámky presenting IgG antibodies against B. canis, while in Komárno region such antibodies were detected in 15 dogs (28.8%, n = 52). This discrepancy may be because the majority of samples from Nové Zámky were dogs suspected of an acute phase of canine babesiosis, whereas dogs at Komárno were sampled during a vaccination campaign, and thus were without any clinical signs of the disease. The latter group contains evidently recovered carriers of IgG against B. canis. Hence, the combination of PCR-based and serological methods enabled us to discover both recently infected as well as recovered dogs, thus obtaining a more realistic view on the epidemiological situation. Remarkably, we did not find any positive samples in the vicinity of Stupava (district Malacky, Western Slovakia), either by PCR-RFLP, microscopy or IFAT (n = 100). Considering the numerous falsely diagnosed cases of canine babesiosis, we suggest that light microscopy as the simplest and most accessible diagnostic test. Southern Slovakia was confirmed as an area of high risk of canine babesiosis, whereas conclusions about B. canis spreading over Western Slovakia should be considered with wariness.  相似文献

The aim of this study was to assess the prevalence of heartworm in domestic dogs in Madera and Fresno Counties, California, dependent on habitat and other host and environmental factors. Dogs were screened for presence of heartworm antigen using the PetChek® ELISA on blood samples (N = 519) collected at seven sites during April-July 2009. Eighteen dogs were heartworm antigen positive. Pearson Chi-square analyses were conducted testing the presence of heartworm antigen against the following independent variables: elevation range, percentage of time spent outdoors during the day, percentage of time spent outdoors during the night, pet coat length, weight class, prevention status, and sex. Dogs that spent at least 50% of their time outdoors during the day were significantly more likely to have heartworm that those who spent less time outside (N = 519, df = 1, p = 0.031). Overall prevalence (3.47%) was lower than expected, with Madera County having 3.8% positive samples and Fresno County 3.5%; this prevalence is lower than in many previous studies. The effect of time spent outdoors on heartworm prevalence was similar to previous studies. The impact of elevation on infection, though not significant, requires further investigation, as does the prevalence and viability of larval stages in mosquitoes.  相似文献

Two canine haemoplasma species have been recognised to date; Mycoplasma haemocanis (Mhc), which has been associated with anaemia in splenectomised or immunocompromised dogs, and “Candidatus Mycoplasma haematoparvum” (CMhp), recently described in an anaemic splenectomised dog undergoing chemotherapy. The study aim was to develop quantitative real-time PCR assays (qPCRs) incorporating an endogenous internal control to detect Mhc and CMhp and to apply these assays to DNA samples extracted from canine blood collected in Northern Tanzania (n = 100) and from dogs presented to a Trinidadian veterinary hospital (n = 185).QPCRs specific for Mhc and CMhp were designed using 16S rRNA gene sequence data, and each was duplexed with an assay specific for canine glyceraldehyde-3-phosphate dehydrogenase (GAPDH). The assays detected ≤10 copies of a sequence-specific haemoplasma plasmid per reaction and neither assay showed cross-reactivity with 106 copies of the sequence-specific plasmid from the non-target canine haemoplasma species.Nineteen of the 100 Tanzanian samples (19%) were positive for Mhc alone and one (1%) was dually infected. One Trinidadian sample was negative for canine GAPDH DNA and was excluded from the study. Of the 184 remaining Trinidadian samples, nine (4.9%) were positive for Mhc alone, five (2.7%) for CMhp alone, and two (1.1%) dually infected.This is the first report of canine haemoplasma qPCR assays that use an internal control to confirm the presence of amplifiable sample DNA, and their application to prevalence studies. This study aimed to examine the aetiology of acute diarrhoea and the relapse rate in 100 client-owned dogs presented to a first-opinion clinic. History, physical examination, faecal testing and owner questionnaire data were collected at initial presentation (T0) and at either the time of relapse or at a recheck performed within 3 months. All dogs received treatment according to their clinical signs. Of 96 dogs that completed the study, 37 (38.5%) relapsed during the study period, 21 (21.9%) relapsed within 3 months, and 16 others (16.6%) at 3 months to 1 year after initial examination. Dogs that had undergone a change in housing location within 1 month prior to presentation and dogs <1 year old were significantly more likely to have positive parasitological analyses (P = 0.02 and P = 0.001, respectively). ObjectivesTwo-dimensional (2D) speckle tracking echocardiography (STE) is a new angle-independent ultrasound technique based on tracking of speckles within the myocardium on 2D grayscale images. The aims of this prospective study were as follows: (1) to assess the variability of left ventricular peak systolic radial strain (St) and strain rate (SR) in awake dogs using STE (Protocol 1); and (2) to quantify these variables in a healthy canine population and compare them with tissue Doppler imaging (TDI)-based St and SR values (Protocol 2).BackgroundSt and SR may be assessed using TDI, which is limited by angle dependency.Animals, materials and methodsThirty-six STE examinations were performed on 6 healthy dogs for Protocol 1 and 37 healthy dogs were recruited for Protocol 2. In both studies, STE measurements were obtained offline from the right parasternal short-axis view by the same trained observer using automatic frame-to-frame tracking of grayscale speckle patterns.ResultsAll within- and between-day coefficients of variation were <10% (Protocol 1). In Protocol 2, St (46.7 ± 12.2%) and SR (2.7 ± 0.6 s−1) measured by STE were correlated with heart rate (p < 0.01), but not with the ratio of early mitral inflow velocity to early mitral annular velocity. There was a good correlation between STE and TDI for both St and SR values (p < 0.001).ConclusionsSTE is a repeatable and reproducible non-Doppler method for assessing radial St and SR. The combination of these indices with conventional echo-Doppler variables could provide a new approach for accurately quantifying canine systolic function.  相似文献

Canine Steroid-Responsive Meningitis–Arteritis (SRMA) is a suitable animal model for studies on the development of neutrophilic pleocytosis in aseptic meningitis. Samples of dogs in the acute phase of SRMA (n = 16) were examined for gene expression of matrix metalloproteinases (MMP)-2 and -9 and tissue inhibitors of metalloproteinases (TIMP)-1 and -2. Results were compared to those of dogs under glucocorticosteroid treatment for SRMA (n = 16) and dogs with other inflammatory and neoplastic diseases of the central nervous system (CNS) (n = 19). Samples included mononuclear (PBMCs) and polymorphonuclear cells (PBPMNs) of peripheral blood and cerebrospinal fluid white blood cells (CSF WBCs). In the acute phase of SRMA CSF WBCs showed mRNA expression for MMP-2 and -9 and TIMP-1 and -2, highlighting a contribution of these cells to the overall content of MMPs and TIMPs in CSF. MMP-2 mRNA levels in CSF WBCs were significantly up-regulated in comparison to PBMC expression levels, suggesting that MMP-2 is relevant for PBMC invasion into the subarachnoidal space and that the expression is influenced by migratory activity through the blood–CSF-barrier.  相似文献

Objective

To evaluate replicate effects and test–retest reliability of mechanical and thermal quantitative sensory testing (QST) in normal dogs and dogs with osteoarthritis (OA)-associated pain.

Study design

A prospective clinical study.

Animals

A total of 54 client owned dogs (OA, n = 31; controls, n = 23).

Methods

Mechanical [electronic von Frey (EVF) and blunt pressure] and thermal (hot and cold) sensory thresholds were obtained in dogs with OA-associated pain and control dogs at two visits, 7 days apart, to assess test–retest reliability. Thresholds were measured at the OA-affected joint (hip or stifle), over the tibial muscle and over the midpoint of the metatarsals. Five replicates were obtained for each modality at each site bilaterally.

Results

Overall, there was no significant effect of replicates on QST response. EVF thresholds were significantly lower at the second visit in OA dogs at the affected and metatarsal sites (p = 0.0017 and p = 0.0014, respectively). Similarly for control dogs, EVF thresholds were significantly lower at the second visit at the metatarsal site (p = 0.001). Significantly higher hot thermal latencies were seen in OA dogs at the affected and tibial testing sites (p = 0.014 and p = 0.012, respectively), and in control dogs at the tibial site (p = 0.004).

Conclusions

In QST, a replicate does not show a strong effect. However, QST results show variability over time, particularly for EVF and hot thermal stimuli.

Clinical relevance

If QST is to be used clinically to evaluate a sensitized state, the variability over time needs to be accounted for in the study design.  相似文献

Tick-transmitted rickettsial pathogens belonging to the Ehrlichia and Anaplasma genera can infect dogs and humans. In this study, four dogs from the North of Portugal, in which an ehrlichial disease was suspected clinically, were tested by molecular methods. After DNA extraction from blood on filter paper, a 345 bp fragment of the Ehrlichia/Anaplasma 16S rRNA gene was amplified by the polymerase chain reaction (PCR). Sequence analysis of PCR products revealed one dog infected with Ehrlichia canis and three with Anaplasma platys. One of these latter animals was co-infected with Babesia canis subspecies vogeli. This is the first report of the genetic characterisation of both A. platys and E. canis in naturally infected dogs from the North of Portugal.  相似文献

An epidemiological survey for canine parvovirus (CPV) and canine coronavirus (CCoV) infections was conducted in Western Europe. A total of 156 faecal samples were collected from dogs with diarrhoea in Spain (n = 47), Italy (n = 39), France (n = 26), Germany (n = 21), the United Kingdom (n = 8), Belgium (n = 10), and the Netherlands (n = 5). Using molecular assays for virus detection and characterisation, CPV and CCoV were found to be widespread in European dog populations, either alone or in mixed infections. In agreement with previous reports, the original type CPV-2 was shown not to circulate in European dogs. The recently identified virus variant CPV-2c was predominant in Italy and Germany and present at high rates in Spain and France but was not detected in the UK or Belgium. Except for the UK, CCoV genotype I was identified in all European countries involved in the survey, albeit at a lower prevalence rates than CCoV genotype II.  相似文献

The aim of this study was to evaluate lipid peroxidation, protein oxidation and activity of enzymes that are indicators of oxidative stress in Rangelia vitalii infection in dogs. Animals were divided into two groups: negative control (n = 5) and infected with R. vitalii (n = 7). After inoculation, the parasitemia was estimated daily by microscopic examination of smears. Lipid peroxidation (TBARS) and advanced oxidation protein products (AOPP); and delta-aminolevulinate dehydratase (δ-ALA-D), superoxide dismutase (SOD) and catalase (CAT) activities in blood were evaluated. The samples were collected at days 10 and 20 post-inoculation (PI). TBARS and AOPP levels were higher in the infected group in both analyzed periods (P < 0.01). The δ-ALA-D activity was reduced in blood of dogs infected with R. vitalii on days 10 and 20 PI. SOD activity was significantly increased (P < 0.01) in the blood of dogs infected with R. vitalii at days 10 and 20 PI, while CAT activity was significantly increased (P < 0.01) only at day 20 PI when compared to non-infected animals. A positive correlation was observed between the degree of parasitemia and TBARS and AOPP levels and activity of antioxidant enzymes. The δ-ALA-D activity was negatively correlated with the degree of parasitemia. Based on the increased levels of TBARS, AOPP, SOD and CAT activities, and inhibition δ-ALA-D activity, we concluded that dogs experimentally infected with R. vitalii develop a state of redox unbalance and that these changes might be involved in the pathophysiology of disease.  相似文献

The effect of moderate-to-deep pressure on soft tissue has been studied in both humans and nonhuman animals with positive results shown in reducing anxiety and promoting relaxation. Canine anxiety disorders are often treated with medications and behavior modification programming. Pressure wraps are sometimes used to treat canine anxiety, but the effects of this investigation have not been rigorously investigated. The aims of this study were to investigate the use of a pressure wrap (ThunderShirt®; ThunderWorks, Durham, NC) on heart rate and behavior in dogs diagnosed with an anxiety disorder. Subjects were 90 dogs (39 males and 51 females) that were diagnosed with Separation Anxiety or Generalized Anxiety Disorder. Dogs were randomly assigned to 1 of the 3 groups, namely Experimental Group 1 (dogs wore the ThunderShirt® per manufacturer's recommendations), Experimental Group 2 (dogs wore the ThunderShirt® loosely without pressure), and Control Group (dogs had no specific treatment). Average and maximum heart rates were measured at baseline and after 15 minutes alone in the kennel. Dogs were video-recorded and analysis completed for 12 behaviors, namely pacing, panting, yawning, tongue-flicking, drooling, elimination, barking, stress whining, howling, licking, door orientation, and calmness. The results were as follows: Dogs in Experimental Group 1 showed significantly less increase from baseline in average heart rate than the Control Group dogs (P < 0.001) and dogs in Experimental Group 2 (P < 0.001). Dogs in Experimental Group 1did not differ significantly from Control Group dogs in maximum heart rate when all dogs were considered, but did differ significantly from the Control Group (P = 0.04) when only those dogs not currently on anxiety medication were considered. There were no statistically significant differences among groups on behavioral outcomes, except that the dogs in the Control Group were significantly more likely to orient toward the door than the dogs in both Experimental Groups 1 (OR = 7.46, P = 0.01) and 2 (OR = 4.42, P = 0.04). Dogs in the Experimental Group 1 presented a trend of less tongue-flicking (P = 0.06) and yawning (P = 0.07) stress reduction behaviors when compared with the other 2 groups. More research should be conducted with the ThunderShirt® on behavioral outcomes. The ThunderShirt® can be used with behavior modification programming and medication as an adjunct treatment option to assist dogs diagnosed with anxiety disorder to reduce heart rate.  相似文献

The aims of this study were to evaluate the effect of age on bronchoscopic features and bronchoalveolar lavage fluid (BALF) cellularity in dogs. Thirty healthy beagle dogs from three age groups were included: young dogs (10 months to 4.5 years of age; n = 8), middle-aged dogs (5–8 years old; n = 13) and older dogs (>8 years; n = 9). Haematology, thoracic radiography, bronchoscopy and bronchoalveolar lavage were performed; bronchoscopic findings were scored and BALF total and differential cell counts were determined. The total bronchoscopic score was higher in older dogs; these dogs had more irregular bronchial mucosa, more prominent mucosal vessels and bronchiectasis. Younger dogs had a higher percentage of neutrophils in BALF compared with middle-aged and old dogs and a higher percentage of lymphocytes in BALF compared with middle-aged dogs. With the dual purpose of selecting both breeding animals and dogs for training, all German shepherd dogs in the Swedish Armed Forces (SAF) breeding program are subjected to a temperament test. During the test, the dog's behavioral responses are rated with 2 different methods. In a previous study, using Principal Components Analysis (PCA) on the test items, 5 and 3 underlying behavioral dimensions from each rating method were defined. Three of the dimensions were reported to correlate significantly to training success. Using the test results from 873 dogs, we estimated heritabilities of, and genetic correlations among, the 38 test items and the 8 underlying behavioral dimensions. Parameters were estimated using a mixed linear animal model including fixed effects of sex, training level, test age and test year-location combination, and random effects of litter, genetic effect of the individual, and residual. Heritabilities ranged from 0.00 to 0.28 (standard error [SE] = 0.05-0.10), which is similar to what has been reported in previous studies of traits defined and measured in a comparable way. Genetic correlations were high (rg = 0.92-0.98, SE = 0.08-0.12) between dimensions derived from each rating method and defined as either confidence, engagement, or aggressiveness, but relatively weak among these dimensions within rating method (rg = 0.00-0.45, SE = 0.29-0.41). Our results imply that the test measures 3 separate behavioral dimensions and that the SAF temperament test as a whole is possible to use for selection of dogs for breeding, but also that some test items should be measured differently to be meaningful for genetic selection purposes. Furthermore, aggregating variables based on a PCA performed on phenotypic data might be suboptimal when defining dimensions for breeding purposes; taking genetic parameters into consideration resulted in generally higher heritabilities for the dimensions.  相似文献
