Our aim was to compare bucks' homosexual mating behavior after mixing 2 groups of bucks, one that was reared in permanent contact and another in complete isolation from female goats, and determine if this behavior was related with testosterone concentration. Two groups of 1-year-old Saanen bucks were reared in permanent contact with 4 adult females until 1 week before the experiment (n = 8; group RF) or isolated from females (n = 9; group RI). When bucks were 1 year old, both groups were mixed (day 0), and mount attempts and matings were recorded on days 1, 3, 6, and 9. Testosterone concentrations were determined by radioimmnoassay from blood samples collected twice daily on days ?7, 0, 1, 3, 6, and 9. Each RI male attempted to mate more RF than RI males (31.9 ± 5.1% vs. 16.7 ± 3.6%, respectively; P = 0.01), but there was no difference on the frequency in which RF males attempted to mate RI (19.4 ± 0.1%) or RF (11.1 ± 0.1%) males (P = 0.24). Similarly, RI males mated more RF than RI males (12.5 ± 2.9% vs. 5.6 ± 0.02%, respectively; P = 0.04). Furthermore, there was no difference on the frequency in which RF males mated RI (10.7 ± 8.9%) or RF (3.6 ± 0.02%) males (P = 0.23). Testosterone concentrations tended to be greater in RF than RI (P = 0.054), but no interaction between time and group was observed (P = 0.13). We propose that as RI bucks never had contact with females, they directed their sexual behavior toward other males that had the stimulating effect of the novelty. On the other hand, for RF bucks, although the novelty effect of the new bucks existed, the previous knowledge of females determined that other bucks were not considered as highly sexual attractive. 1. Previous studies have shown that a bunch of string is a particularly attractive pecking stimulus for chicks and adult laying hens. Because movement is thought to be an important attribute of enrichment objects, this study determined whether occasional movement would affect the attractiveness of this device. 2. In experiment 1 the responses of pair-housed chicks to string were compared when devices in adjacent cages were either linked (so that pecking or pulling at the string in one cage moved the adjoining one) or not (separate). In experiment 2 the devices in half the cages were jigged remotely by the experimenter whereas the others remained static. In both cases, the string devices were introduced into the cages for 10 min on each of 5 consecutive days. 3. No treatment effects were apparent in experiment 1 when pooled data was analysed but comparison of responses on days 1 and 5 revealed that only the chicks presented with non-linked devices showed increased interest with repeated exposure. 4. Chicks given static devices in experiment 2 pecked sooner, more often and longer at them than did those exposed to similar ones that were jigged regularly by the experimenter. Jigged devices attracted slightly more pecking with repeated exposure, which may have reflected familiarity-induced fear-reduction, but chick responses showed no apparent changes from day 2 onwards. Conversely, rather than showing habituation, the chicks pecked progressively more at the static devices with repeated presentation. 5. The present results show that chicks pecked readily at bunches of white string, thus confirming its attractive properties but that static devices were more attractive than those incorporating occasional movement. These and previous findings are discussed in terms of their implications for the development of effective environmental enrichment.  相似文献

Does control of bovine viral diarrhoea infection make economic sense?   总被引:3,自引:0,他引:3  
AIM: To provide an economic analysis of the costs of control or eradication of bovine viral diarrhoea (BVD) against the estimated costs of the disease. METHODS: A decision-tree approach was adapted to an analysis of the costs of bovine viral diarrhoea virus (BVDV) infection and that of three main control options (vaccination, test-and-cull, and increased biosecurity) and their combinations, to the dairy industry in New Zealand. The model was based on an average herd of 322 milking cows. Endemic, epidemic and sporadic effects of BVDV infection were modelled in the herd, to derive an estimate of costs. RESULTS: The cost of BVDV infection to an infected average-sized dairy herd in New Zealand was estimated to be NZ $11,334 (or NZ $35.19 per cow) per annum, and NZ $48,311 over 10 years. Based on these calculations, the estimate of the annual cost of BVDV infection to the dairy industry in New Zealand was in excess of NZ $23 million per annum. While all of the control options required financial input, the rate of return compared with the cost of BVD, when viewed over a 10-year term, was as high as 123%. CONCLUSIONS: All control options offered considerable savings compared with the cost of BVD infection, and control is economically favourable. Uncertainty over the likely efficacy of the control options under field conditions in New Zealand would not allow a firm choice of one option over another at this stage, and more work on determining the efficacy of those control options in New Zealand is needed.  相似文献

The general role of veterinary epidemiology and economics to national animal-disease control throughout the world is considered for the four main groupings of animal diseases: zoonotic, food-borne, endemic and epidemic diseases. This is done by considering how veterinary epidemiology and economics has contributed to priority setting (which diseases come first?), decision-making (for a given disease, which strategy is best?), and disease control implementation (how can optimal delivery and adoption of selected interventions best be achieved?). Within each of these categories, progress made and future opportunities are discussed. In addition, a review is made of how veterinary epidemiology and economics has been institutionalised. We conclude that veterinary epidemiology and economics holds a unique role in the development of national policies and strategies for improved animal health world-wide. However, we consider that we must capitalise more on the unique comparative advantage of the partnership between veterinarians and agricultural economists. We believe that much remains to be done to improve the "institutionalisation" of veterinary epidemiology and economics, and the adoption and impact of the products of our unique partnership, particularly in countries of the developing world.  相似文献

Rotaviruses (RVs) are the main aetiologic agent of severe acute diarrhoea in children under the age of 5, worldwide. Given that the currently available preventive measures to fight against the transmission of RV disease are not sufficiently effective, vaccination likely represents the only efficacious adapted response to the massive impact of this infection. Although the two current RV vaccines have shown good tolerance and significant efficacy to protect infant against severe RV disease, their development have raised key questions that are still unanswered regarding their cost, efficacy and safety. These two vaccines have in common the disadvantages related to the use of oral attenuated live viruses which limit their implementation in both developed and developing countries. In order to overcome these hurdles, it is important to support the development of new, non-replicating vaccines which will not suffer the potential disadvantages of the present vaccines. New approaches and other routes of administration are being tested in animal models and soon will be evaluated in humans. Among those are viral-like particle-based vaccines which have provided the most promising results. Finally, the epidemiology of the disease which differs in developed and developing countries can affect decisions about vaccine composition and delivery. The answer brought by the development of new RV vaccines could reside in developing several types of RV vaccines specifically designed to be used in different settings.  相似文献

OBJECTIVES: Titanium implants have a tendency for high bone-implant bonding, and, in comparison to stainless steel implants are more difficult to remove. The current study was carried out to evaluate, i) the release strength of three selected anodized titanium surfaces with increased nanohardness and low roughness, and ii) bone-implant bonding in vivo. These modified surfaces were intended to give improved anchorage while facilitating easier removal of temporary implants. MATERIAL AND METHODS: The new surfaces were referenced to a stainless steel implant and a standard titanium implant surface (TiMAX). In a sheep limb model, healing period was 3 months. Bone-implant bonding was evaluated either biomechanically or histologically. RESULTS: The new surface anodized screws demonstrated similar or slightly higher bone-implant-contact (BIC) and torque release forces than the titanium reference. The BIC of the stainless steel implants was significant lower than two of the anodized surfaces (p = 0.04), but differences between stainless steel and all titanium implants in torque release forces were not significant (p = 0.06). CONCLUSION: The new anodized titanium surfaces showed good bone-implant bonding despite a smooth surface and increased nanohardness. However, they failed to facilitate implant removal at 3 months.  相似文献

Background

One of the challenges faced by equine breeders is ensuring delivery of good quality semen doses for artificial insemination when the mare is due to ovulate. Single Layer Centrifugation (SLC) has been shown to select morphologically normal spermatozoa with intact chromatin and good progressive motility from the rest of the ejaculate, and to prolong the life of these selected spermatozoa in vitro. The objective of the present study was a proof of concept, to determine whether fertilizing ability was retained in SLC-selected spermatozoa during prolonged storage.

Findings

Sixteen mares were inseminated with SLC-selected sperm doses that had been cooled and stored at 6°C for 48 h, 72 h or 96 h. Embryos were identified in 11 mares by ultrasound examination 16–18 days after presumed ovulation.

Conclusion

SLC-selected stallion spermatozoa stored for up to 96 h are capable of fertilization.  相似文献

This study tested the hypothesis that milk has a direct effect on the establishment of infection with Teladorsagia circumcincta, and provides information on the effects of suckling on resilience to infection in young lambs. Of 46 six-week-old twin-born lambs, one from each twin was allowed to continue suckling (S-) and its twin-weaned (W-) while both were concurrently infected with an average of either 0 (-0; n=7/group), 250 (-250; n=8/group) or 1000 (-1000; n=8/group) third stage infective larvae (L3) of T. circumcincta per day, providing six treatment groups. All groups grazed minimally contaminated pasture, and after 42 days were slaughtered for necropsy. Low pasture larval contamination was confirmed in W0 and S0 lambs by faecal egg counts (FEC) of less than 30 eggs per gram (EPG) and burdens of less than 140 worms. There was no difference in FEC between weaned and suckled lambs. Within infection regime, total worm burdens were 55-60% greater in the weaned compared with their suckled counterparts (P=0.05), and represented 27 and 17%, respectively, net establishment of larvae. The greater worm burdens of both groups of weaned animals, which compared with their suckled counterparts, and of those infected with 1000 compared with 250 larvae per day, were associated with shorter female adults that had fewer eggs in utero, perhaps indicating intra-worm population regulation, but highlighting the limitation of FEC in assessing nematode burdens of such young lambs. There was no effect of infection on live weight gain of either weaned or suckled groups and the possibility was raised that, in such young lambs, immune unresponsiveness may be responsible. The major benefit of continued milk consumption appears to lie more in providing nutrients for enhanced growth rather than in improving resilience of the lambs to infection.  相似文献
