Biosecurity, biocontainment, and disease risk management on dairy replacement operations are time- and labor-intensive, planned programs. Oftentimes the value of these programs is realized only after disease is introduced to a facility or a disease outbreak occurs. There is no "one-plan-fits-all;" each plan must be tailored to meet the needs of management's goals and expectations and problems specific to a production enterprise or geographic region. A standard framework applicable to biosecurity programs includes: (1) hazard identification, (2) exposure assessment, (3) risk characterization, and (4) risk management. The discussion presented here helps lay the framework for development and implementation of biosecurity and risk-management programs within dairy replacement facilities. 相似文献

Five feline total hip replacements (including one case of staged bilateral total hip replacement) for management of proximal femoral physeal fractures are reported. The surgical procedure was a modified version of that widely used in dogs. Craniodorsal luxation was the only major complication encountered. Eight mature (12 +/- 2 yr; MAT) and 5 older (22 +/- 2 yr; OLD) Standardbred mares were used to test the hypothesis that aging and exercise training would alter apoptosis in white blood cells and antioxidant status. The horses were housed indoors overnight (16 h/d) in 3 m x 3 m stalls and were turned out in a drylot during the day. They were fed a diet consisting of total mixed ration, hay cubes fed ad libitum or an equine senior diet plus grass hay. Horses were trained for 20 to 30 min/d, 3 to 5 d/wk for 8 wk at a submaximal work intensity between 60 to 70% of maximal heart rate. A graded exercise test (GXT; stepwise test until exhaustion) was performed before (GXT1) and after (GXT2) the 8 wk of training. During the GXT, blood samples and heart rate were taken at rest, 6 m/s, fatigue, and at 5 and 60 min postfatigue. Fatigue plasma lactate concentration was greater in MAT (19.3 +/- 1.5 at 10 m/s) compared with the OLD (10.9 +/- 1.2 mmol/L at 9 m/s; P = 0.008) horses. There was no effect of age or training on plasma lipid hydroperoxide (LPO) concentration. However, there was a positive correlation between LPO and plasma lactate concentration (r = 0.27, P = 0.006) during acute exercise. There was a greater concentration of total glutathione after GXT1 than after GXT2 (111.8 +/- 5.0 vs. 98.6 +/- 3.4 microM, respectively; P = 0.0002) for both age groups. Apoptosis was less (P = 0.002) in white blood cells of the MAT vs. the OLD group. These results demonstrate that older horses are under similar amounts of oxidative stress, measured by LPO, and have similar levels of glutathione in their systems compared with mature horses. The observation that more glutathione was needed during GXT1 for both groups of horses indicates that training helps horses adapt their system for the intense post-training exercise tests. The greater level of white blood cell apoptosis also indicates that older horses may be immune-compromised during exercise. However, research still needs to be performed regarding dietary supplementation in the aged horse. 相似文献

The objective of this study was to empirically determine the economic value of genetic information in the selection of dairy replacements, and assess whether this value was sufficient to prompt producers to select replacements on this basis. The data set consisted of 1982 Michigan Holstein replacements in 115 herds. Each herd had a minimum of 10 replacements that were born in the last 6 months of 1992 and calved within the last 6 months of 1994. The data for each replacement included the estimated breeding value (EBV) for milk at the beginning and end of the rearing period, and the estimated lifetime profit corrected for the opportunity cost of postponed replacement (ELPCOC). The replacement selection decision for a profit-maximizing dairy producer selecting 70 or 80% of the replacements was modeled. We modeled three methods of selection: genetic, random and ex poste. Genetic selection was evaluated using the EBV milk available at the beginning or end of the rearing period. For each herd, the profit associated with each of the three methods of selection was simulated. The value of the genetic information and perfect information were the differences in herd profits of genetic selection and ex poste selection relative to random selection, respectively. The difference in value of the genetic information between the end of the rearing period and the beginning of the rearing period was the increase in value of the genetic information due to updating. The value of information was calculated as the average herd profit per replacement. The value of the genetic information ranged from 22 dollars/replacement to 30 dollars/replacement and was statistically greater than zero at a 95% confidence level. It is unclear whether this value is sufficient to prompt producers to select replacements on the basis of EBV milk as has been recommended. The negative value of EBV milk (from the end of the rearing period when selecting 80% of the replacements) for 32 herds was consistent with the noisiness of the genetic estimates as messages of ELPCOC. The increased value of the genetic information due to updating was approximately 5 dollars/replacement. This increased value is likely insufficient to warrant delaying replacement selection decisions solely to obtain the updated information. The value of EBV milk was approximately 4 dollars/replacement higher when selecting 70% of the replacements versus 80%. The genetic information captured between 15% (selecting 70% at the beginning of the rearing period) and 20% (selecting 80% at the end of the rearing period) of the value of perfect information. 相似文献

Total hip replacements in the dog have become well established over the past 20 years as an effective method for treating disabling hip conditions. A fixed head prosthesis has been the mainstay during most of this period. Return to normal function with this prosthesis has been reported at 95 per cent. Although patient selection, pre- and post surgical care, the surgical technique and the treatment or prevention of complications has been continually improved, it was not until recently that the prosthesis and its instrumentation were improved. Now a modular prosthesis with improved instrumentation gives the veterinary surgeon ‘state of the art’ implants and instruments. The prosthesis is easier to implant, the surgeon has greater flexibility in surgery and improved results are expected. Total hip replacement continues to be an effective way to give dogs a pain-free, mechanically sound hip joint. 相似文献

Brucella canis was isolated from the cement or bone surrounding a hip prosthesis after total hip replacement was performed for treatment of hip dysplasia in 2 dogs. Lameness or signs of infection were not evident for 9 and 16 months after surgery. Osteomyelitis surrounding the prostheses was detected radiographically only after the lameness developed. The origin of the B canis infection in the 2 dogs was believed to be hematogenous because of the biologic behavior of this organism and because of the duration of excellent limb function after hip replacement. A slide agglutination test for B canis should be performed as a screening test on any canine total hip candidate when the anamnesis and physical examination indicate that the dog may have been exposed to or infected with B canis. 相似文献

OBJECTIVE: To create a model in sheep for investigation of early changes related to the formation of an interface membrane in hip prosthesis. STUDY DESIGN: Experimental study. ANIMALS: Twenty-four female adult Swiss Alpine sheep. METHODS: Sheep were divided into 2 groups of 12 for unilateral cemented total hip arthroplasty. In Group I, the prosthesis was fixed with retrograde cement gun injection to achieve a complete cement mantle, whereas in Group II a primary cement mantle defect was produced. Groups I and II were further divided into 2 sub-groups with study end points of 2 and 8.5 months after surgery. Radiographs were evaluated postoperatively and at euthanasia for migration of the femoral component and bone resorption. Histologic sections were evaluated semiquantitatively for changes in cell types and numbers, and bone reactions; and quantitatively for size of interface membrane and new bone formation. RESULTS: Radiographically, there tended to be an increase in bone resorption and periosteal bone formation throughout the femoral shaft in Group II compared with Group I, but this was only statistically significant at the region of the femoral neck (R5) at both time periods (P<.05). Semiquantitative histologic evaluation revealed significant increases (P<.05) in cellularity, numbers of fibroblasts, giant cells, macrophages, and mononuclear cells, in Group II primarily at 2 months after surgery. This was also true for interface membrane formation and bone remodeling. Quantitative data showed an increased in the size of the interface membrane and area of bone formation at 8.5 months in Group II. CONCLUSIONS: The cement defect model offered controlled and repeatable production of an interface membrane. The results suggest that a primary cement mantle defect could be a possible trigger for implant instability, eliciting a cascade of biomechanical and molecular events in bone tissue leading to aseptic loosening. CLINICAL RELEVANCE: The results show the effect of defects in the cement mantle in promoting interface membrane formation. Long-term and biochemical studies are required to evaluate the relevance of this interface membrane formation. 相似文献
