Genetic variation, heritability and progeny testing in meadow bromegrass   总被引:2,自引:0,他引:2  
Meadow bromegrass is a recently introduced pasture grass in western Canada. Its leafy production and rapid regrowth have made it a major grass species for pasturing beef animals in this region. Because relatively little breeding work has been done on this species, there is little information on its breeding behaviour. The main objective of this study was to estimate genetic parameters and assess breeding methodologies for meadow bromegrass. Forty half‐sib (polycross and open‐pollinated) and full‐sib (selfed) progenies were evaluated for dry matter and seed yield, fertility index, harvest index, plant height, plant spread, crude protein, neutral detergent fibre and acid detergent fibre. Genetic variation for seed yield, harvest index, and plant height was significant in the open‐pollinated and selfed tests. Genetic variation estimates for dry matter yield were negative (polycross), not significant (open‐pollinated), or significant (selfed). Estimates of genetic variation for quality traits were not significant, except for acid detergent fibre (selfed). Correlations among characters indicated that it is possible to simultaneously improve seed and forage yield. Rankings of progenies by the half‐sib tests for forage and seed yield were not altered by the use of the synthetic parental value (SVi), which includes information from selfed progeny. The polycross progeny test did not discriminate parents as well as the open‐pollinated and selfed tests; this may have been a result of non‐random pollination in the polycross. Correlation among the progeny tests, showed that open‐pollinated and selfed progeny tests agreed for all characters, except for harvest index, while correlation between polycross and selfed tests were significant for six characters but not dry matter yield, and acid and neutral detergent fibres. The most dissimilar tests were polycross and open‐pollinated, with significant correlations found only for fertility index, height, spread and neutral detergent fibre. It was concluded that there was significant variation and moderate heritability for most traits in the meadow bromegrass populations evaluated, and that the open‐pollinated progeny test is the method of choice for selecting parents for synthetics of this species.  相似文献

Ten meadow bromegrass genotypes tested as half‐sib (polycross, PX; open‐pollinated, OP) and selfed (S1) progenies were surveyed using random amplified polymorphic DNA. Fourteen primers, which produced 32 markers, were selected to determine the genotypes of 360 individuals from the three progeny tests. Analysis of molecular variance was performed in each progeny test, and genetic distances between genotypes and progeny types were determined. Among genotype genetic variation in half‐sib (PX and OP) progenies was similar. Genetic variation among genotypes for S1 progenies (30.5%) was about twice that found in the half‐sib progenies. Variation between individual S1 progenies ranged from 15.7% to 50.1%, while in the half‐sib progenies, the range was 6.9‐24.1%. Based on average distances between progeny types for a given genotype, OP and PX were closer to each other than to the S1. An analysis of variance of the molecular marker frequency occurrence was performed for 12 plants within each progeny type of each genotype. Marker frequencies, expressed in percentages, ranged from 10.7% to 84.3%. No significant differences were found for genotype and progeny type‐genotype interaction suggesting that all genotypes behave in a similar manner across the different progeny types.  相似文献

Higher ruminant intake potential and in vivo digestibility as indicated by lower neutral and acid detergent fibre (NDF and ADF), respectively, and higher crude protein (CP), may be valuable targets in tall fescue breeding. Some 105 full‐sib families from a diallel cross of Mediterranean parent germplasm were grown in a heated greenhouse simulating the temperature pattern of a Mediterranean environment, to estimate genetic parameters for NDF, ADF, CP and dry matter (DM) yield in one autumn and one winter harvest. Family x harvest interaction was large for NDF and ADF, moderate for CP and absent for DM yield. Additive genetic variance was mostly larger than specific genetic variance, and tended to be small for quality traits and large for DM yield. Narrow‐sense heritability was low for CP and ADF in autumn and moderate to fairly high in the remaining cases. Predicted gains per selection cycle never exceeded 5% for quality traits while being greater than 10% for DM yield. An inverse genetic correlation between DM yield and any quality trait emerged in the presence of sizeable genetic variation.  相似文献

以9个不同的玉米自交系为亲本,按照Griffing I双列杂交模式组配72个杂交组合,研究其淀粉黏度性状的遗传效应。结果表明:沉降值和回落值存在超中亲优势,其他性状存在超低亲优势。杂交组合的峰值黏度、谷值黏度、终值黏度、回落值与父本的相关系数大于母本;除糊化时间和糊化温度外,其他性状的广义遗传力均较高。峰值黏度、谷值黏度和终值黏度的狭义遗传力均达到了较高水平。谷值黏度和终值黏度的遗传变异主要以加性为主,沉降值的遗传变异主要以显性为主,其他性状的遗传变异加性和显性共同作用。  相似文献

Seed yield is a major breeding target in tetraploid red clover. We investigated if marker‐assisted parentage analysis can identify progeny plants with two high seed‐yielding parents in tetraploid red clover and if this technique is more advantageous than traditional half‐sib selection. Parentage analysis was successfully performed on the progeny from the 10% highest seed‐yielding genotypes from a second‐cycle family selection trial: 16.0% of progeny were identified with a high seed‐yielding father. However, progeny plants with two high seed‐yielding parents did not produce more seeds than traditionally selected progeny (27.3 g vs. 30.7 g/plant, respectively). The 10% highest seed‐yielding genotypes displayed on average 2% self‐fertilization. Four genotypes were self‐fertile with individual selfing rates up to 20%. Our results discourage the use of marker‐assisted parentage analysis to improve seed yield in tetraploid red clover when the material has been preselected for seed yield. Breeders should be aware that intensive selection for seed yield in tetraploid red clover may inadvertently lead to selection for increased self‐fertility, which may increase inbreeding in the long term.  相似文献

Thickspike wheatgrass (Elymus lanceolatus [Scribn. & J.G. Sm.] Gould) is an important native perennial grass species used for rangeland revegetation in North America. Plant breeding efforts relying on space‐plant evaluations have resulted in limited improvement in this species. The purpose of this study was to characterize the performance of thickspike wheatgrass half‐sib families under space‐plant and sward plot evaluations, estimate the correlation between measured traits in both evaluation settings, and determine the validity of selecting thickspike wheatgrass for rangeland revegetation in the nontarget environment space‐plant plots. The study included 50 thickspike wheatgrass half‐sib families and five commercial cultivars and experimental populations which were evaluated over 3 years in space‐plant and sward plot evaluations at a field site in Box Elder County, Utah, USA. Collected data included stand percentage, flag leaf height, and herbage dry mass. Narrow‐sense heritability estimates were low to moderate (h< 0.60) and Spearman and genetic correlation estimates among traits were also generally low to moderate. Overall, there was little evidence to suggest the use space‐plant evaluations in thickspike wheatgrass improvement programmes.  相似文献

采用加性-显性与环境互作的遗传模型,分析陆地棉8个杂交亲本和F128个组合的7个产量性状的两年试验资料,估算各项遗传方并非分量和F1、F2的杂种优势.结果表明,产量性状受加性效应和显性效应共同控制,加性×环境各产量性状均极显著,铃重、衣分、籽指还受显性×环境的极显著影响,7项产量性状的广义和狭义遗传率均达到极显著水准.  相似文献

为了明确三峡库区玉米地方品种育种潜势,以三峡库区常用的7个玉米自交系为测验种,采用NCⅡ设计,对三峡库区14个玉米地方品种的配合力以及主要性状遗传参数进行了分析。结果表明,‘文峰白玉米’、‘大寨玉米’、‘太阳河白玉米’在单株产量、穗长、穗粗、穗行数、行粒数、百粒重上具有较高的一般配合力。‘文峰白玉米’、‘大寨玉米’在改善株型、提高产量有更为突出的表现。不同性状SCA效应值变幅差异较大,其中单株产量变幅最大,为-25.48%~30.47%。所有性状中,亲本的基因加性效应均对F1性状形成起主导作用;穗长、穗粗、行数等7个性状广义遗传力和狭义遗传力均较高,可在早代进行选择;秃尖长、单株产量的广义遗传力较高,但狭义遗传力较低,不宜过早进行选择。  相似文献

The genetic control of tall fescue forage yield has been poorly investigated. Full‐sib families from diallel crosses of Mediterranean germplasm were evaluated for forage yield over 34 months in a Mediterranean environment with severe drought stress (diallel 1, with 20 parents) and over 16 months under irrigation in a heated greenhouse simulating the Mediterranean temperature pattern (diallel 2, with 15 parents). Genetic parameters were estimated for fresh biomass in diallel 1 and dry‐matter yield in diallel 2. Additive genetic variance was always larger than non‐additive (dominance) variance. Narrow‐sense heritability was fairly high (h2 = 0.61) in diallel 1 and moderate (h2 = 0.45) in diallel 2. Predicted yield gains from one selection cycle were larger in the former diallel (23.9%) than in the latter (10.5%), suggesting that gains can be enhanced by selection under severe drought stress and over a time span sufficient to allow the variation in persistence to fully emerge. General combining ability effects of eight parents that were common to both diallel crosses were highly correlated (r = 0.94) across the contrasting evaluation environments. The extent and consistency of additive genetic effects across environments suggest that rapid improvement of forage yield is possible.  相似文献

Late blight, caused by Phytophthora infestans (Mont.) de Bary, is the most destructive disease of potato worldwide. As this pathogen can rapidly overcome major race‐specific resistance genes, identifying the basis for enhanced quantitative resistance has become a crucial element for implementing advanced breeding strategies. A population of 230 full‐sib progeny derived from a cross between two diploid hybrid Solanum phureja × S. stenotomum clones was evaluated for foliage resistance against late blight in replicated trials at multiple locations in Pennsylvania between 1999 and 2002. In field experiments, plants were evaluated visually for per cent defoliation, and area under the disease progress curve (AUDPC) was determined. The two parents and three control cultivars (‘Atlantic’, ‘Kennebec’ and ‘Katahdin’) were included in all trials. In all three experiments, the presence of a significant number of clones exhibiting transgressive segregation were observed. There were significant differences among environments as well as among clones, and the clone × environment interaction was also significant. Stability analysis revealed that 37 clones made a significant contribution to the overall environment × clone interaction. Broad‐sense heritability for resistance, measured as AUDPC, was estimated as 0.67. The overall results indicate the presence in this potato family of a high level of field resistance against late blight. This segregating diploid family appears to be a good candidate for quantitative trait loci mapping to identify and characterize the genetic components of partial late blight resistance.  相似文献

Summary White clover genotypes were selected for high and low values of leaf size, taproot diamater, number of taproots, proportion of total root and taproot dry weight. Crosses within selected groups of genotypes resulted in 14 seed lines, which were compared with parent genotypes in field tiles. Selections for taproot diameter and proportion taproot were more successful than those for taproot number and proportion root.Narrow sense heritability of characters calculated by regression of progeny on mid-parent values were well correlated with broad sense heritabilities derived from replicated clonal comparisons (r=0.73*), indicating that the genetic variation is controlled predominantly by additive gene effects.  相似文献

Early blight disease, caused by Alternaria solani Sorauer, is a serious disease of potato foliage and tubers that occurs in most potato‐growing regions world‐wide. Developing new potato cultivars with resistance to early blight may reduce losses in the field and in storage, and lessen the need for fungicide applications. A total of 280 clones, derived from 72 maternal half‐sib families from a diploid random‐mated hybrid population of Solarium phureja×Solarium stenotomum were examined for resistance to early blight. The clones that were evaluated in a replicated field trial for 2 years in Pennsylvania, USA, had similar early blight intensity both years. Significant differences were found among families, within families and for the interaction of years × within families. Broad‐sense heritability for resistance, measured as area under the disease progress curve (AUDPC), was estimated as 0.73, with a 95% confidence interval of 0.65‐0.78, and narrow‐sense heritability was estimated as 0.61 ± 0.29 (P = 0.05). The correlation of AUDPC for early blight between years was 0.57 (P < 0.0001). These results suggest that this diploid population is worthy of use in breeding for early blight resistance.  相似文献

To study the effectiveness of genetic divergence for cross prediction in potato, progeny means, heterosis and specific combining ability effects were correlated with parents’ genetic distances (D values) estimated under six in vitro and four in vivo conditions, for tuber yield in 72 crosses (18 × 4) of 22 parents under autumn crop conditions for three successive generations. Genetic distances under in vitro conditions had no relationship with the progeny means for tuber yield. Whereas, those under in vivo conditions in the autumn seasons were positively associated with the progeny means. Similarly, heterosis for tuber yield had a stronger relationship with genetic distances based on an in vivo crop than those based on an in vitro crop. All correlation coefficients between genetic distances and specific combining ability effects were non-significant. The magnitudes of the significant correlation coefficients showed that genetic divergence can be used as an indirect parameter of moderate effectiveness in selecting parents to produce heterotic high yielding progenies. Such cross predictions, however, would be effective only if parents are evaluated under the conditions similar to those under which crosses are likely to be evaluated. Summary Mesocotyl length is an important character in promoting seedling emergence of direct-seeded rice. Genetic analysis of rice mesocotyl length was conducted using a six parent diallel cross. Generation mean analysis was carried out on parents (P), F1, F2 and backcrosses (B) of three crosses to complement the genetic information from the diallel analysis. Both analyses demonstrated the presence of significant additive and dominance effects. Duplicate type of non-allelic interaction was detected by the generation mean analysis and two crosses showed significant negative dominance gene effect. Dominance was partial and the narrow sense heritability estimate for mesocotyl length was high, indicating the preponderance of the additive effects.Mesocotyl length was negatively but weakly correlated with the coleoptile length and length of the second internode L2. There was no correlation between mesocotyl length and other mature plant characters such as plant height and internode lengths L1, (L1 being the peduncle with subsequent internodes to the base of the plant). Selection for mesocotyl length can therefore be carried out independent of these plant characters and semidwarf rice varieties with long mesocotyl can be developed.  相似文献

Genetic variation for NaCl tolerance at the vegetative stage was assessed in nutrient solution culture in maize (Zea mays L.). Shoot growth, and plant fresh and dry weight of the two cultivars, Akbar and Sadat were severely reduced after three weeks growth in 120, 150, and ISO mol m?3 NaCl. There was however considerable variability between seedlings. Ten-thousands seeds of cv. Akbar were therefore screened for shoot growth at 180 mol m?3 NaCl after four weeks growth in sand culture. A selection intensity of 0.42 % was achieved. Eighteen selected plants were polycrossed for estimation of narrow-sense heritability based on female parent-progeny regression. A narrow-sense heritability estimate of 0.54 was obtained. The progeny of the salt-tolerant selection line and selfed progeny plants of the unselccted control lines of cvs Akbar and Sadat were grown for six weeks in 0, 30, 60, 90, 120, 150, and 180 mol m?3 NaCl in sand culture. The tolerant line produced significantly greater fresh and dry biomass and had greater shoot length than the unselected cv. Akbar, but the selection line derived from cv. Akbar was equal to the salt tolerant cv. Sadat in all the growth parameters measured. These data suggest that in maize, improvement in salt tolerance could be obtained through further cycles of selection and breeding.  相似文献

Genetic diversity is considered as one of the criteria for the selection of parents for hybrid breeding. The present study was undertaken to evaluate genetic divergence among seven pepper cultivars and to assess the relationship between heterosis and parental genetic distance. Twenty‐one F1 hybrids and seven parents were evaluated for 15 morphological characters in a greenhouse and in the field. The parents were examined for DNA polymorphisms using six amplified fragment length polymorphism (AFLP) primer combinations. Cluster analysis using two genetic distance measures grouped the seven parents differently. Mid‐parent and high‐parent heterosis was observed for most characters. Most hybrids outperformed the parental lines for fruit yield, earliness and plant height. Morphological and AFLP‐based distance measurements were efficient enough to allocate pepper genotypes into heterotic groups. The correlations of morphological distances with mid‐parent heterosis were significant for days to flowering and maturity, suggesting earliness can be predicted from morphological distances of parental lines. However, the correlations of AFLP‐measured genetic distances with mid‐ and high‐parent heterosis were non‐significant for all characters, except for fruit diameter, and proved to be of no predictive value.  相似文献

Crosses were made between seven hexaploid wheat genotypes. Twenty-one F1 hybrids and their parents were grown in a greenhouse with 16 h day/8 h night at 25°C and 15°C, respectively. The experiment was a complete randomized block design with three replications. Each replication consisted of one pot with three plants. Anther culture was performed in two different induction media (CHB and W14) and androgenetic traits were studied. Statistical analysis was carried out separately for each induction medium. Genetic variation was highly significant for androgenetic traits and the best parent (IBPT 19) produced 68 embryos and 9.3 green plants per 100 anthers in CHB medium. Genetic components were affected by induction media and some components were significant in one medium and non significant in the other. General combining ability (GCA) was significant for all androgenetic traits, except for albino plant regeneration in both media and total plant regeneration in CHB medium, whereas specific combining ability (SCA) was not significant for the traits studied. Narrow sense heritability was high for embryo induction frequency and green and total plant regeneration. All our results indicate that androgenetic parameters can be improved in hexaploid wheat by genetic means.  相似文献

Eleven mating designs, 6 top-crosses and 5 North Carolina II, were used to estimate narrow sense, broad sense and within-cross heritability of Coffea canephora yield in Côte d'Ivoire. The objective was to predict achievable genetic gains according to different breeding strategies. Narrow sense, broad sense, family and within-cross heritabilities were 0.32, 0.43, 0.83 and 0.22, on average respectively. The percentage of additivity was high (81% on average). A degree of variation was nevertheless observed for estimates over trials. This was found to be mainly due to parent sampling in each trial. By theoretical computation, the minimum number of parents required to obtain optimum precision was found to be around 30. Predicted genetic gains for yield through clonal selection at a selection level of 1% ranged from 7 to 28% over the best hybrid in each trial, suggesting thus clones still interesting for breeders. The consequences for coffee breeding are discussed.  相似文献

Summary Seventy-two plants regenerated from leaf-derived calli of a single plant of Lotus corniculatus have been evaluated for several morphological and agronomical traits. The analysis of selfed and polycross progenies of the regenerants indicates that the variation among regenerants was, at least in part, of genetic origin. Most of the mutations induced by tissue culture were recessive and were detected only after sexual propagation. Although in vitro culture had a depressive effect for most of the traits, the selfed progenies of 2 regenerants displayed higher values for leaflet width and seed yield than the selfed progeny of the initial plant. However the somaclonal variation did not increase the variation for any trait with respect to the variation of the donor cultivar of the initial plant.  相似文献
