The reproductive biology of 315 cobia, Rachycentron canadum, from northeastern Australia was studied for an 18-month period. Cobia ranged from 181 to 1,470 mm FL (0.06–55 kg). Length–frequency distributions of males and females did not differ significantly. The sex ratio of females to males was 2.18:1. Histological data showed that cobia developed hydrated oocytes during a protracted spawning season between September and June. Gonadosomatic index peaked from October to December, coinciding with the monsoon or “wet” season. Estimated length at first maturity for female cobia was 671 mm FL. Length at 50% maturity (L 50) for females was estimated at 784 mm FL (1–2 years of age). Batch fecundity ranged from 577,468 to 7,372,283 eggs with a mean of 2,877,669 (± SD 1,603,760) eggs. Relative batch fecundity was 249 eggs per g, and no relationship between relative fecundity and fork length was found. There was a significant positive relationship between the total number of eggs produced and fork length. Spawning frequency, estimated by the post-ovulatory follicle method, was 7.6 days. Based on the detection of hydrated oocytes in fish caught at night, cobia most likely spawn at night. Cobia also feed throughout the spawning period. This is the first report on the reproductive biology of cobia in Australian waters, and provides valuable data for future population assessments of cobia throughout the Indo-Pacific.  相似文献

Growth and reproductive characteristics of jack mackerel Trachurus japonicus collected in the East China Sea were determined based on otolith readings and gonad histology, respectively. Translucent and opaque zones on sectioned otoliths were identified and opaque rings counted. Von Bertalanffy growth parameters did not significantly differ between males and females, and the combined growth curve was: L t  = 401{1 ? exp[?0.275 (t + 1.149)]} (0.8 < t < 6.9), where L t is fork length (mm) at age t. The calculated lengths at age 1 in our study were larger than those reported 50 years ago from the East China Sea. The spawning period was evaluated to be from December to June, but primarily from February to May, based on the monthly changes in the gonadosomatic index and histological observations. The minimum size and age at first maturity were smaller and younger, respectively, than those reported in previous studies.  相似文献

Age, growth, maturity, and sex changes of the monogrammed monocle bream Scolopsis monogramma were estimated from ca. 500 specimens collected at Okinawa-jima Island in southern Japan. Age was determined from sectioned otoliths: maximum ages were 10 years for females and 9 years for males. Parameters for von Bertalanffy growth functions were L t  = 206.6{1 ? exp[?0.68(t + 0.81)]} (n = 337) for females and L t  = 244.4{1 ? exp[?0.93(t + 0.32)]} (n = 130) for males. The spawning season was estimated to last from June to July, with a peak in July. The standard length (SL) and age at 50 % maturity for females were estimated as 186.4 mm SL and 3.3 years, respectively. Intersex individuals appeared from 159.6 to 237.5 mm SL (n = 16) in fish between 1 and six years old, with the highest frequencies occurring at 170 mm SL and 2 years old. Hence, almost all S. monogramma specimens found at Okinawa-jima Island exhibited pre-maturational sex change, although some may have been protogynous hermaphrodites. Biological characteristics such as age at growth, maturation, and spawning season are valuable factors that can inform the resource management of local fisheries.  相似文献

The growth and reproductive characteristics of dolphinfish Coryphaena hippurus collected in the waters off western Kyushu from May 2008 to April 2011 were determined based on scale and otolith readings and gonad histological examinations, respectively. Based on annual increments in scales and daily increments in sagittal otoliths, the von Bertalanffy growth curves in male and females were determined as $ FL_{t} = 1049[1 - \exp \{ - 0.835(t + 6.975 \times 10^{ - 14} )\} ] $ and $ FL_{t} = 938[1 - \exp \{ - 1.029(t + 6.975 \times 10^{ - 14} )\} ] $ , respectively, where FL t is the mean fork length (mm) at age t. The spawning period was found to last from June to August for dolphinfish, based on an examination of the monthly changes in the gonadosomatic index and histological observations. Therefore, based on the relationship between the fork length and the developmental stage of the testes or ovaries, male and female dolphinfish were found to reach sexual maturity by the following spawning season after hatching in the northern East China Sea.  相似文献

Age determination of wild captured Pacific bluefin tuna, Thunnus orientalis, was conducted using sagittal otoliths of 806 specimens (47–260 cm in fork length) caught in the waters off Japan and Taiwan. Otoliths were transversely sectioned and the opaque and translucent zones were analyzed. Opaque zones mainly appeared on the otolith edge from April to July, indicating that the opaque zone is formed annually. The opaque zones formed during later life (age 10+) were more distinct than the earlier zones. The estimated ages of specimens ranged from 1 to 26 years. Parameters of the von Bertalanffy growth function were estimated to be 249.6 cm, 0.173, and −0.254 years for L, k, and t0, respectively. Growth of younger fish was rapid up to 5 years old attaining about 150 cm, and then growth rate decreased. After that, fish attained about 200 cm at 9 years old and about 225 cm (90% of L) at 13 years old (50% of maximum age). This paper updates the biological information on length at age with a large size range to support stock assessment model analyses for this commercially valuable species.  相似文献

Commercial landings of a rare pleuronectid flatfish, barfin flounder Verasper moseri, recovered drastically after large-scale stock enhancement in Hokkaido conducted since 2006. This study investigated commercial landings, fishing grounds, size distributions, and sex and age compositions of barfin flounder during 2007–2011 in southern Tohoku, their major spawning ground, which is over 700 km south of Hokkaido. Landings, mostly comprising stocked fish, increased drastically in southern Tohoku: from 2.0 tons in 2007 to 20.8 tons in 2010. Over 98 % of them were landed during January–April, with the peak period during February–March. Fishing logbook data of offshore bottom-trawl vessels during 2007–2010 revealed the upper continental slope off southernmost Tohoku as the main fishing ground (35°40′–36°50′N, annual weighted mean depth 267–299 m). Two size modes in the landings consisted of males (ca. 40 cm) and females (ca. 60 cm). The main age at fishery recruitment in southern Tohoku was younger for males (age 2+) than for females (ages 3+ and 4+), the result of which was that the female percentage was lowest at 1.5 % in 2009 and highest at 7.9 % in 2011. Our results showed clearly how the effectiveness of large-scale stock enhancement in Hokkaido extended to southern Tohoku in association with spawning migration of stocked barfin flounder.  相似文献

A 4‐year study (May 1997–December 2000) of the reproductive biology of pink dentex Dentex gibbosus (Rafinesque) from the Adriatic Sea revealed that this species is a rudimentary hermaphrodite. The smallest mature males and females captured were 38.70 cm in total length (TL) and 39.80 cm in total length (TL) respectively. The von Bertalanffy growth parameters estimated for the entire population were: L=107.24, K=0.12 and t0=−0.90. Fifty per cent of the population were sexually mature at 41.50 cm TL, while 100% of the specimens were sexually mature at 57.00 cm TL. Both monthly gonadosomatic index and macroscopically determined gonad stages strongly indicate that the pink dentex from the Adriatic Sea spawn partially in August, September and October. The mean value of absolute fecundity (F) was 1672 × 106 eggs. The results of great fertility of the pink dentex, partial spawning and relatively late sexual maturation suggest that the pink dentex has a high potential for commercial culture.  相似文献

This study details the growth and maturation processes of Pacific saury Cololabis saira from eggs to first spawning under laboratory conditions. They were reared at 20°C, and fed almost to satiation every day. There was no significant difference in the knob length (KnL) between males and females, and so data for both sexes were combined in the following Gompertz growth formula: KnL t  = 277.1 exp[?exp(?0.015 (t ? 83.8))]. The first spawning was observed 243 days after hatching (DAH). At the beginning of spawning, when the mean KnL was about 250 mm, only several hundred eggs were spawned at most. The spawning continued, and the number of spawned eggs increased notably after 260 DAH. Correlation and stepwise multiple regression analysis of the gonad somatic index (GSI) of Pacific saury versus KnL, CF, and DAH revealed that only DAH (R = 0.88 and 0.72 for males and females, respectively) was significantly correlated with GSI of Pacific saury (P < 0.001). This result suggests that DAH is one of the most influential factors for maturation in this species.  相似文献

Fisheries management requires knowledge on the population dynamics of exploited stocks. To that end, the present study used a mark–recapture approach to characterise the population demographics of roundjaw bonefish Albula glossodonta (Forsskål) and their interaction with a data‐limited fishery on Anaa Atoll in the Tuamotu Archipelago of French Polynesia. Over the course of the study, 2,509 bonefish were tagged and 12.3% were recaptured. The L of bonefish was estimated at 71 cm fork length (FL) with a K of 0.17, based on changes in FL between capture events. Artisanal fish traps located in the migratory corridors of the atoll accounted for 94% of recaptures and these movements occurred during the waning moon. Fishing mortality increased as bonefish reach sexual maturity, recruiting to the trap fishery at age 4 with the onset of spawning behaviour. Bonefish abundance between ages 3 and 5 was estimated to be 29,079 individuals. This case study demonstrated the utility of mark–recapture in filling knowledge gaps that impede the management of data‐limited fisheries. Ultimately, these results supported the creation of an Educational Managed Marine Area and the resurgence of rahui (seasonal closure) to manage this fishery.  相似文献

Swimming performance of jack mackerel Trachurus japonicus (18.2 ± 0.8 cm fork length (FL), n = 185) was examined in a flume tank by measuring the stride length at low and high tail beat frequencies with electromyogram monitoring and a muscle twitch experiment. Stride length was analyzed by monitoring the tail beat frequency according to the swimming speed at different temperatures of 10, 15 and 22 °C. In the electromyographic observations, the initiation of ordinary muscle activity occurred between 71.4 and 99.6 cm/s, that is 3.7 to 5.3 FL/s, when the tail beat frequency was over 6 Hz. The swimming speeds increased rectilinearly with the tail beat frequency at each water temperature both for the low and high tail beat frequency. Lower stride length was observed at the lowest temperature (10 °C) tested. The forced swimming exercise significantly affected the muscle contraction time to become longer than the control fish, which indicated a reduction of the maximum swimming speed performance.  相似文献

Small abalone Haliotis diversicolor (Reeve, 1846) is one of the smallest commercial abalone in the world. The successful application of artificial propagation and mass seed production techniques since the 1980s have resulted in the establishment of well-developed culture systems for small abalone in Taiwan. In the study reported here, we estimated the growth of a population of small abalone after a decade in a closed culture system and its growth characteristics with those of wild populations reported in previous studies. The von Bertalanffy growth equations of the shell length (L) and body weight (W) of cultured abalone were L t  = 71.73 (1 ? e?0.84 (t?0.16)) and W t  = 47.70 (1 ? e?0.84 (t?0.16))3.180, respectively. The instantaneous rate of change for weight had an inflection point at the age of 1.54 years, indicating that cultured abalones reach their apex of body growth around this age. Compared with the wild populations, the cultured population exhibits a significantly smaller maximal shell length (L ) and a significantly larger growth coefficient (k). Based on our results, it appears that the artificial culture of generations of small albalone for one decade or more in a closed system could be one of the major factors causing the observed minimization of size in the cultured abalone; this may be an adaptation in which growth is traded off for the larger k.  相似文献

Mulloway (Argyrosomus japonicus) occur in estuarine and coastal waters surrounding Australia, Africa, India, Pakistan, China, Korea and Japan, where they are important in fisheries. This study identified that mulloway in south-eastern Australia had similar growth rates, but matured at smaller lengths and younger ages, to those in South Africa and Western Australia. Growth of both sexes was similar to about 5 years, after which females grew faster and attained a greater maximum length than males. Female mulloway matured at 4–5 years of age with a L50 of 68 cm, whereas males matured at 2–3 years of age with a L50 of 51 cm. The commercial fishery in New South Wales was characterised by declining catches and a reduction in the proportion of mulloway of mature lengths in landings. During 2002–2005 commercial landings were dominated (83%) by fish within 15 cm of the current minimum legal total length of 45 cm and aged 2 and 3 years (>80%), even though mulloway can attain lengths of 200 cm and live >30 years. Estimates of the rates of instantaneous total mortality ranged between 0.34 and 0.45, whilst the rate of instantaneous natural mortality (M) was estimated to be approximately 0.12. Yield-per-recruit analyses indicated that mulloway in New South Wales are being growth overfished and substantial increases in yield could be achieved by increasing the length at first harvest. Values of the spawning potential ratio were below 0.2 under a range of mortality estimates, suggesting that mulloway are at risk of recruitment overfishing. These results suggest that the spawning stock of mulloway in south-eastern Australia has been depleted and that remedial management action is required to protect this iconic species.  相似文献

Two adult male freshwater eels, Anguilla japonica, were captured in June 2008 in the West Mariana Ridge (13°N, 142°E) in the North Pacific, but collections of females have yet to be reported. In September 2008, we successfully caught two adult female A. japonica, 55.5 and 66.2 cm in total length, in the adjacent but northern area (14°N, 143°E). Six newly hatched eel larvae (pre-leptocephali) were also collected by subsequent plankton sampling conducted near the female catch area. Female adults appeared to be in the post-spawning state, probably a considerable time after spawning, since a small number of remarkably regressed oocytes (50–250 μm in diameter) were observed in the ovaries. Capture of post-spawning female eels and newly hatched larvae near the Suruga Seamount (14°N) together with the previous collection of mature males in the southern area (13°N) corroborates that the area along the West Mariana Ridge is the spawning area of this species, but suggests that the eel spawning may occur over a wider area than previously expected.  相似文献

Biological data on Atlantic halibut, Hippoglossus hippoglossus, caught in an exploratory bottom trawl fishery in November–February 1983–1986 in a recently discovered deep water spawning area and in other both coastal and bank areas in Faroese waters, are presented.Studies of increases in length and weight confirmed the sex-dependent growth patterns found in earlier works, i.e. a higher growth rate in females than males especially after sexual maturity. The data show that Faroese halibut grow much more rapidly and mature at lower average ages (c. 4.5 years in males and slightly above 7 years in females) than in any other area investigated in the North Atlantic. Average length and round weight at sexual maturity were slightly above 55 cm and c. 1.7 kg in males, while the corresponding values in females were 110–115 cm and c. 18 kg.Spawning in the area appeared to commence in January and intensify in February. The peak in spawning activity was apparently not attained during the study period (November–February), and most probably occurred later in winter or early in spring.  相似文献

The reproductive characteristics of Gymnocypris firmispinatus were determined from 582 individuals collected in the Anning River, China. The sex ratio (male: female) was 1:1 for the overall population but 3.1:1 for the mature group. Females reached a larger total length and total weight (242 mm and 148.17 g) than males (163 mm and 41.58 g). Lengths and ages at maturity were estimated to be 83.4 mm and 2.4 years for males, 130.7 mm and 5.9 years for females, respectively. Based on the analyses of gonad development and the size distribution of oocytes, G. firmispinatus spawned from March to May with high degree of the spawning synchronicity. The opposite tendency between gonado-somatic index and hepato-somatic index from January to March in females indicated that the energy requirement for the oocytes growth may be derived from the liver. In addition, the estimated mean fecundity and mean relative fecundity were 1227 and 29.7 eggs per g total weight. The fecundity of G. firmispinatus increased linearly with increasing of total length, total weight and ovary weight. This study provides details about the reproduction suggesting that G. firmispinatus might be especially vulnerable to exploitation in the Anning River.  相似文献

This study investigated variability in the growth, length, and age compositions and the rates of mortality of Flinders’ sillago Sillago flindersi exploited in a demersal trawl fishery in eastern Australia. Sampling was done over 2 years across three depth strata at two locations approximately 400 km apart. Ageing of sectioned sagittal otoliths indicated that the observed maximum age of females was 6 years and that of males 5 years, that growth was variable and that the von Bertalanffy growth parameters significantly differed according to gender and location. Females attained a greater L than males, but males displayed greater k values. The L values of both sexes and the mean length-at-age for fish aged 3–5 years were greater at the location of highest latitude. Length and age compositions differed according to depth, with smaller (<15 cm FL) and younger (<2 years) fish generally more predominant in the shallow (<30 m) strata than in the deeper (>31 m) strata. S. flindersi appear to use the shallow strata as a juvenile habitat, moving to deeper waters as they grow. This depth stratification between cohorts may reduce intraspecific competition and could potentially be used as a spatial management tool to reduce any fishing-associated impacts on juveniles. Fish between 1 and 3 years old dominated the age compositions of populations combined across all depths, with estimated total mortality ranging between 2.24 and 2.40. Fishing mortality ranged between 1.54 and 1.70 and was more than twice the derived natural mortality. Exploitation rates were approximately 0.70, indicating that the species was heavily fished.

Some anguillid spawning areas are known based on collections of small larvae, but recently for the Japanese eel Anguilla japonica, adult spawners have been caught in trawls and their eggs and preleptocephali collected. The spawning area of A. japonica is located along the western side of the West Mariana Ridge, but the natural spawning behavior of this species or that of any other anguillid species has never been observed. This study reports on the first effort to observe spawning aggregations of anguillid eels that was conducted by the R/V Yokosuka using the Shinkai 6500 submersible and a Deep-Tow camera system in the A. japonica spawning area in July 2012. The submersible was deployed mostly at 200–800 m during daytime and the Deep-Tow was deployed mostly at 130–250 m during nighttime, both in multiple oblique depth tracks along linear transects. Various fishes and invertebrates were seen in the pelagic environment during day and night, but no spawning aggregations were observed. One eel was briefly recorded by a Deep-Tow camera at 20:13 on 17 July (2 days before new moon) at a depth of 179 m. The eel was recorded for <1 s as it passed in front of the camera. Its anterior body and head shape were consistent with a male A. japonica, or possibly a Derichthys serpentinus eel, but not with other mesopelagic eels. Because the tail region of the eel was not visible, species identification was not possible.  相似文献

Abstract. The size selectivity of gillnets to pikeperch, Stizosiedion lucioperca (L.), and perch, Perca fluviatilis L., caught mainly wedged, was estimated by the selective use of the deterministic model of Holt (1963). The selectivity characteristics for pikeperch based on samples in gillnets with 48-65-mm bar mesh were: k= 0·903 and σ= 4·93cm (fork length). When a higher efficiency of large-meshed nets is accounted for, the estimated selectivity curve shifts to the right. The condition of the pikeperch had a major influence on the position and shape o(the selectivity curve. The selectivity to perch was established with 25–35-mm gillnets in a year with a poor food supply: k= 0·723 and σ= 2·59cm (fork length). Estimates based on literature data from an exploited perch population showed a much lower k= 0σ639 (total length) (σ= 2·69cm).  相似文献
