Using the world wide web to develop key professional skills in veterinary undergraduates

This paper outlines the pedagogical and practical reasons for developing two interactive online pathology modules for use by third-year undergraduates in veterinary medicine at the University of Glasgow: namely, to further students' understanding of general and systems pathology, as well as their acquisition of key professional skills, and to provide access to a core-elective system of education and to subsequent employment and lifelong learning.

利用在中国知网内近十多年内有关蓝莓研究的文献作为材料,采用文献计量分析法,对5年间我国蓝莓文献的年份分布、文献研究领域、被引频次、文献作者所在机构、基金论文比、作者合作度以及发文量位于前十的机构进行了研究,根据洛特卡定律确定了核心作者。本论文将为相关研究人员把握蓝莓研究现状和为今后研究提供有益参考。     

Effective bibliographic searching for animal alternatives in veterinary medical education: the UC Davis web site

To prepare students in just four years to enter veterinary practice, veterinary medical educators offer an array of laboratory and clinical experiences coordinated with didactic instruction. Recent curricular changes have reduced the numbers of animals involved in painful or terminal procedures. For each use of animals, veterinary educators are required by the USDA's policies 11 and 12 to complete animal-use protocols that include questions on alternatives to procedures causing more than momentary pain or distress. Veterinary medical educators seeking improved teaching resources and methods or completing animal-use protocols may find it frustrating to locate the relevant information, which is dispersed across many databases. This paper addresses a gap facing veterinary educators by presenting user-friendly searching tools that are targeted toward (a) locating teaching resources and (b) conducting effective bibliographic searches on standard teaching laboratory procedures, as required for animal-use protocols. These tools simplify searching by providing streamlined access to the resources being sought. Facilitating efficient and effective searching by users can improve teaching and simplify compliance with USDA requirements.     

An integrated web system to support veterinary activities in Italy for the management of information in epidemic emergencies

The management of public health emergencies is improved by quick, exhaustive and standardized flow of data on disease outbreaks, by using specific tools for data collection, registration and analysis. In this context, the National Information System for the Notification of Outbreaks of Animal Diseases (SIMAN) has been developed in Italy to collect and share data on the notifications of outbreaks of animal diseases. SIMAN is connected through web services to the national database of animals and holdings (BDN) and has been integrated with tools for the management of epidemic emergencies. The website has been updated with a section dedicated to the contingency planning in case of epidemic emergency. EpiTrace is one such useful tool also integrated in the BDN and based on the Social Network Analysis (SNA) and on network epidemiological models. This tool gives the possibility of assessing the risk associated to holdings and animals on the basis of their trade, in order to support the veterinary services in tracing back and forward the animals in case of outbreaks of infectious diseases.     

Online Zoological Collections of Australian Museums (OZCAM): a national approach to making zoological data available on the web

Museums increasingly seek to publish data on the internet. However, individual records from a natural sciences database are not meaningful. The combined results of a number of datasets can be made much more meaningful by using a graphical display. In this paper, a project undertaken by a group of Australian natural sciences collecting institutions is described. Issues about data quality and other aspects of data management are discussed.
