1. Light hybrid hens between 32 and 68 weeks of age kept 4, 5 or 8 birds to the cage received one of three energy intakes, from a medium‐ or low‐energy diet.

2. Ad libitum fed birds laid more and heavier eggs than any of those restricted. A decrease in daily egg output of about 5 g was associated with each 100 kJ decrease in daily intake of metabolisable energy.

3. For the same energy intake, egg output of birds fed on the low‐energy diet was markedly greater than that associated with the medium‐energy diet.

4. The mortality of birds receiving restricted quantities of the medium‐energy diet was two to three times greater than that associated with similar rationing of the low‐energy diet.  相似文献

1. Three sequential experiments, each lasting 8 weeks, were carried out on 576 singly‐caged light hybrids.

2. In experiment 1 egg production was 84% using a conventional control diet, 61% with a basal low‐protein diet, and 79% with the basal diet supplemented with 10 essential amino acids + L‐glutamic acid (GA).

3. In experiment 2 supplementation with lysine and methionine (L + M) alone increased egg production significantly from 54 to 72%, compared with 83% with the conventional diet.

4. In experiment 3 egg production was 55% with the basal diet, 71% with the basal diet + L + M, 75% with a diet containing 141 g protein/kg + L + M, and 73% with the conventional diet.

5. In all three experiments supplementation with GA alone either gave no significant response or a depression in production.

6. Daily intakes of 1.24 g nitrogen as non‐essential amino acids and 13 to 14 g total crude protein per bird resulted in good egg production. Supplementation of the basal diet with L + M resulted in a daily intake of 413 mg methionine/bird day which was considered adequate, and a daily intake of 710 mg lysine which was considered slightly inadequate.  相似文献

1. This study investigated whether feather damage due to feather pecking and bird behaviour were influenced by plumage colour in Oakham Blue laying hens (black, white, grey colour variants). The reflectance properties of feathers and spectral composition of light environments experienced by the hens were also examined. 2. Nine hundred and seventy-nine birds were inspected and scored for feather damage; 10.5 h of video recordings were examined to record feather pecking and bird behaviour. Feathers and light environments were measured using a USB-2000 spectrometer and DH-2000-CAL-DTH lamp. 3. Oakham Blue birds with white plumage had less feather damage due to feather pecking than black or grey birds. There was more severe feather pecking in the mornings than in the afternoon. White birds feather pecked severely more than black or grey birds, although there were no other behavioural differences between plumage colours. 4. White feathers reflected at a higher intensity than black or grey feathers. However, black and grey feather spectra were relatively flat and the contribution of UV wavelengths to plumage reflection was proportionally greater than that for white feathers. 5. Light intensity inside a poultry house was 100 x (UW/cm2/nm) less than on the range and there was low or no UV reflectance. Under the dim, artificial lights inside a poultry house, Oakham Blue hens with black and grey feathers may be less visible to conspecifics than white birds because their plumage reflects at a lower intensity. Furthermore, the lack of available UV light inside vs. outside and the higher contribution of UV reflectance to black and grey plumage may make black and grey birds appear more different inside the house than white birds. It is possible that this novel/unusual appearance may make black or grey Oakham Blue hens more susceptible to feather pecking.  相似文献

1. Three experiments were carried out to determine the phosphorus (P) requirements of laying hens aged 34 to 58 weeks (experiment 1), 59 to 70 weeks (experiment 2) and 22 to 50 weeks (experiment 3) given diets containing wheat, sorghum and soyabean meals as the main ingredients. Dietary total P (Pt) varied between 3.2 and 7.3 g/kg (experiment 1), 3.2 and 4.6 g/kg (experiment 2) and 3.0 and 6.6 g/kg (experiment 3). Hens were housed at either 18° or 30°C (experiments 1 and 2) and uncontrolled temperature (experiment 3), and in experiment 2 diets were fed without or with a phytase supplement of 500 units/g.

2. Dietary Pt had no significant effect on production measures in any experiment. Increases in dietary Pt adversely influenced egg shell quality although uterine calcium (Ca), ATPase and carbonic anhydrase activities were unaffected.

3. A 3‐d‐feeding trial in experiment 1 gave maximum Pt retentions of 228 mg/d at 18°C and 204 mg/d at 30°C. These were obtained with diets containing, respectively, 4.6 and 6.0 g Pt/kg.

4. Plasma inorganic P (Pi) increased consistently with increases in dietary Pt at all temperatures but plasma total Ca, and tibia Ca and P, were unaffected.

5. The inclusion of the phytase supplement in diets containing 3.2 and 4.6 g Pt/kg had an adverse effect on egg production at both temperatures in experiment 2.

6. A dietary Pt concentration of 3.2 g/kg, providing a calculated 1.2 g available P (Pav) /kg, with a dietary phytase activity of less than 200 units/kg, satisfied the P requirements of the hens used in these studies. However, the data from experiment 3 suggest that the Pt requirement of some flocks fed on wheat‐based diets may be lower than 3.2 g/kg.  相似文献

1. The effect of feeding the detergent, sodium lauryl sulphate at concentrations up to 10 g/kg diet on egg‐shell quality was examined in laying hens at 24, 36 and 48 weeks of age.

2. Lauryl sulphate at 2.5 g/kg or more in the diet significantly increased shell breaking strength, shell thickness and shell weight at 24 and 36 weeks. In 48‐week‐old hens only shell breaking strength was increased significantly. Egg production and egg weight were not affected significantly by lauryl sulphate.

3. Lauryl sulphate might increase these measures of quality by increasing shell deposition and/or shell elasticity.  相似文献

1. This study investigated effects of plastic anti‐pecking devices on food intake and behaviour to assess their applicability in commercial layer flocks.

2. In experiment 1, 72 individually caged ISA Brown pullets were fitted at 16 weeks of age (point of lay) with either ‘ring’ or ‘bumper’ beak devices or no device (control), half being fed on pellets and half on mash. The devices were held in place by lugs inserted in the nares.

3. There was evidence of discomfort immediately after fitting the devices, but not thereafter. In the first week, the devices reduced food intake, and were removed from 7 (15%) birds that lost weight consistently. Between 16 and 21 weeks, however, there were no significant effects of beak treatment or food form on either total food intake or egg production with the 65 remaining birds.

4. Beak treatment did not affect feeding efficiency (food intake per minute of feeding). The only behaviour affected was pecking at birds in adjacent cages, which was reduced with the ring device.

5. At 21 weeks, the birds were placed together in groups of 4 to 6 in 12 pens, each group consisting of birds from one of the 6 original treatments, and their behaviour was observed in experiment 2 between 21 and 23 weeks.

6. The only effects of beak treatment on behaviour were that pecking at pen walls was increased with the ring device, while pulling and eating feathers from group mates was seen mainly with control birds fed on pellets. Two birds were cannibalised in a control group on pellets.

7. Devices came off 3 (7%) birds in experiment 1 and were replaced, and rings slipped over lower mandibles of 2 (5%) birds in experiment 2 and were corrected.

8. At 23 weeks, beak lengths were increased with ring and bumper treatments, and pecking damage scores were low with all treatments.

9. It is concluded that these devices are not applicable commercially, but further trials would be justified with new improved designs.  相似文献

1. Single comb White Leghorn hens of an inbred line highly susceptible to fatty liver haemorrhagic syndrome (FLHS) were fed supplemented dietary ascorbic acid (200 mg/kg), α‐tocopherol (75 mg/kg), or L‐cysteine (3 g/kg, and 6 g/kg) for 28 d in order to evaluate the potential therapeutic effect of these compounds against the disease.

2. Supplementation of ascorbic acid, α‐tocopherol, or a low level of L‐cysteine (3 g/kg) did not significantly affect any of the hepatic variables evaluated. Hepatic glutathione was not increased by the supplementation of dietary L‐cysteine.

3. L‐cysteine supplemented at a level of 6 g/kg decreased hepatic dry matter and fat contents without affecting the hepatic malondialdehyde or the liver haemorrhagic score.

4. Because one of the predisposing factors of FLHS is a high hepatic fat content it was concluded that dietary supplementation of L‐cysteine (6 g/kg) may be useful in the prevention of the disease.  相似文献

1. During the last quarter of 1995 an unusual disease outbreak characterised by black sticky diarrhoea, severe reduction in food intake, egg production and body weight follow by lameness and death was observed in 2 layer farms in Andhra Pradesh. A total of 6700 hens of 64 weeks age and 3000 hens of 36 weeks age were affected.

2. Around 10% mortality and a 20% reduction in egg production was observed. Postmortem examinations showed pale yellow coloured livers with peripheral congestion, mild haemorrhage in the proventriculus and watery accumulations in the intestine.

3. The disease was traced to a new batch of food and its withdrawal improved the health status of the flocks.

4. Analysis of the diet indicated contamination with fumonisin B1 up to 8–5 mg/kg and with aflatoxin B1 up to 0.1 mg/kg.

5. Diarrhoea was induced in day old cockerels by feeding the suspect diet containing 8.5 mg/kg fumonisin Bi, and in laying hens by feeding a normal diet with fumonisin B1 additions of 8 and 16 mg/kg.  相似文献

A total of 1584 Lohmann Selected Leghorn hens were kept in 144 modified cages furnished with—perch, nest and sandbath for 5, 6, 7 or 8 hens per cage or in 162 conventional cages for 4 hens. Cage floor area was 600 cm2 per hen excluding nest and sandbath. Doors to nests and sandbaths were time monitored. Production, mortality, exterior egg quality, health, integument and the birds use of facilities were registered from 20 until 80 weeks. No effects of group size or keeping system on production or mortality were detected, but the furnished cage gave more cracked and less dirty eggs than the conventional cage. Hens in the furnished cage had better plumage condition, less toe pad hyperkeratosis, shorter claws, less rear body wounds and stronger humerus, but dirtier feet than hens in the conventional cage. Hens in the larger group sizes had the dirtiest feet. In the furnished cage, on average, 86% of all eggs were laid in the nests and 0.6% in the sandbaths. The rolling out efficiency from nests was best in the larger group sizes. During night less than 0.5% of the hens stayed in the sandbath and less than 2% stayed in the nest. Average use of perches was 28% during the day and 91% at night. Hens in the small group sizes used the sandbath most. Dust‐bathing behaviour also occurred on the wire floor.  相似文献

1. The individual and combined effects of T‐2 toxin and 4,15‐diacetoxyscirpenol (DAS) on laying hens were investigated in an experiment consisting of a 2 X 2 completely randomised factorial design with dietary concentrations of 0 and 2 mg/kg T‐2 toxin and 0 and 2 mg/kg DAS.

2. Individually, T‐2 toxin and DAS induced oral lesions in half of the hens and decreased significantly egg production and food intake.

3. The effects of T‐2 toxin and DAS were additive for reduced food consumption and incidence of oral lesions. However, a synergism for reduced egg production was observed during the last experimental period.

4. No effects on body weight were observed during this study. Mild changes in selected plasma enzymes activities and no change in liver malondialde‐hyde content were detected.

5. The combination of T‐2 toxin and DAS was more toxic than the single mycotoxins, for some parameters, and therefore, may pose a greater economic threat to the poultry industry than either of the toxins individually.  相似文献

1. Vascular adjustments to the process of egg formation were examined in the unanaesthetised laying hen, by the radioactive microspheres method.

2. Three‐ to four‐fold increases in blood flow were found in segments surrounding the egg during its passage along the oviduct, possibly due to an enhanced metabolic activity in the muscle layer of the oviduct.

3. Shell‐gland blood flow was minimal in the absence of an egg and increased gradually to a maximum (5‐fold) about 5 h after entrance of the egg into the shell gland. This parallels the rate of calcification of the egg shell.

4. Changes in blood flow in the ovarian follicles and other parts of the oviduct were small while the egg was in the shell gland. This might be typical for the reproductive system of the fowl, which undergoes little structural alteration during egg formation.  相似文献

The aim of this experiment conducted at four sites in Switzerland was to investigate the transmission and infectivity of the two main helminth parasite species of poultry (Ascaridia galli and Heterakis gallinarum) in outdoor runs with two different stocking rates. Additionally, the influence of a simple management practice (mowing of run) on helminth transmission was studied. Three run types were created on each site: runs C served as control (stocking rate 10 m2/hen, no management), runs B corresponded to runs C but were managed (10 m2/hen, management). In runs A stocking rates were doubled compared to control runs (5 m2/hen, no management). During two subsequent layer flocks, a set of parasitological parameters (faecal egg counts (FECs), prevalence, worm burdens in hens and in tracer animals, helminth eggs in soil) as well as parameters describing the run vegetation were determined. The increased stocking rate (runs A) led to a larger proportion of bare soil and to a reduction of the average vegetation height. In runs with a lower stocking rate (B and C), the proportion of bare soil did not increase during the experimental period. Irrespective of the run type, numbers of helminth eggs in the soil decreased significantly with an increasing distance to the hen houses, while the percentage of ground coverage as well as vegetation height increased. However, across runs the correlation between the percentage of ground cover and the values of eggs per gram soil between runs was very low (r2 = 0.0007, P = 0.95) indicating a non-causal relationship. Significant differences in FEC were found in flock 2 (P < 0.001): FEC of hens in managed runs B were 24% lower (P < 0.05) than those of the control animals. Although not significant, the corresponding prevalence was lower (−9.7%) in hens from managed runs as well. Hens from runs with a high stocking rate (A) had significantly higher FEC than hens from control runs (C). In flock 2 management (n.s.) and higher stocking rates (−62%, P < 0.05) decreased the worm burdens. Tracer animals from runs with a high stocking rate (A) had significantly higher FEC than tracers from runs B and C in two tracer series. This was not reflected in the worm burdens. Overall, the stocking rate of hens in the outdoor run seemed not to influence the transmission patterns of A. galli and H. gallinarum and repeated mowing of runs did not reduce helminth infections. Lower stocking rates, however, led to a substantial improvement of the run vegetation.  相似文献

  1. The aim of this study was to increase the n-3 fatty acid (n-3 FA) content of eggs without affecting their sensorial and/or technological properties or the laying performance of hens. Laying hens from line 477 were divided into 5 groups corresponding to 5 different diets over the laying period: control diet (C) and diets containing extruded linseed with a high level of fibre (ELHF), extruded linseed with a low level of fibre (ELLF), microalgae, or a combination of 75% ELLF and 25% MA (ELLF+MA).

  2. Dietary enrichment with n-3 FA had no effect on the laying performance, hen body weight or egg white viscosity. The egg yolks produced by hens fed the diet containing microalgae were redder than egg yolks from the other groups, suggesting the presence of red pigments in the microalgae preparation. However, the colour difference was low and not perceptible to the human eye. Moreover, colour measurement of egg yolks by sensorial analysis panellists using the Roche colour fan did not reveal a diet effect on this parameter.

  3. Egg yolk lipid content was not affected by diet. The egg yolk of hens fed on diets containing linseed and/or microalgae had greater n-3 FA content (×2.5 to 2.9 compared to group C). Linseed mainly increased the linolenic acid content (×3.0 to 3.4 compared to group C) and the microalgae increased the LC n-3 FA content (×4.1 compared to group C). Dietary enrichment with n-3 FA had no effect on the sensorial quality of shell cooked eggs except for the “unusual flavour” criterion for which the score was higher for the MA group compared to the other groups and corresponded to a fishy flavour.

An experiment was conducted to evaluate the effects of laying hen diets supplemented with δ-aminolevulinic acid (ALA) and vitamin C (VC) on productive performance, iron status and egg quality. A total of 252 Hy-line brown commercial laying hens were fed two levels of VC (0 and 500 mg/kg) and three levels of ALA (0, 5 and 10 mg/kg) in a 2 × 3 factorial arrangement from 57 to 63 weeks of age. Each treatment contained seven replicates with six hens in each replicate. Supplementation of the diet with both ALA and VC resulted in a significant increase in egg production during 4-6 weeks (p < 0.05). The haematocrit (HCT), total iron-binding capacity (TIBC), white blood cell (WBC), total protein and albumin concentrations were not affected by the dietary treatments. However, ALA and interactive effect of ALA and VC were observed to increase the RBC, haemoglobin and serum iron concentrations (p < 0.05). In addition, inclusion of both ALA and VC increased blood lymphocyte percentage in relation to hens not supplemented with ALA (p < 0.05). Moreover, single effect of ALA or VC improved (p < 0.05) the yolk colour unit and albumin height from 3 to 6 weeks. The egg shell colour was increased (p < 0.05) by the effect of ALA. The addition of VC also led to an increase (p < 0.05) of the Haugh unit at the end of the experiment. However, neither ALA, nor VC exerted an effect on egg weight, egg shell breaking strength or egg shell thickness. The results demonstrate that dietary ALA and VC supplementation can improve the iron status and egg quality of laying hens.  相似文献

1. One thousand two hundred and ninety‐six medium‐ and 1296 lightweight hens were housed, four to a cage, in deep (conventional) cages, 405 mm wide by 460 mm deep, or shallow cages, 610 mm wide by 305 mm deep, between 18 and 70 weeks of age. The performance of the hens during different periods of the laying stage and over the full laying year was measured.

2. Egg number per medium‐weight hen housed in shallow cages was significantly higher than of hens housed in deep cages between 18 and 30 weeks and 31 and 42 weeks. Thereafter significant differences were not found. With the light‐weight hens the increase was significant only in the 18‐ to 30‐week period. Apart from the 19‐ to 30‐week period hens of both strains housed in shallow cages consumed significantly less food than those in deep cages, the reduction over the full year being about 4%. In all periods the hens housed in the shallow cages converted food more efficiently. Gage shape had no significant effect on mortality.

3. The incidence of hair‐cracked, cracked and broken eggs between 60 and 70 weeks of age from hens housed in shallow cages was lower than that from hens housed in the deep cages but only with the light‐weight hens did this difference reach significance. Shell thickness, shell weight and albumen quality of eggs laid by hens housed in the different shaped cages were not significantly different.  相似文献

This study was conducted to evaluate the effect of γ-aminobutyric acid (GABA) on laying performance, egg quality, digestive enzyme activity, hormone level and immune activities in Roman hens under heat stress. Roman hens (320 days old) were fed with 0, 25, 50, 75 and 100 mg/kg GABA, respectively during a 60-day experiment. Compared with control, supplementation of 50 mg/kg GABA improved the laying performance and egg quality by significantly increasing egg production, average egg weight and shell strength (P < 0.05), while decreasing the feed–egg ratio and cholesterol level. Anti-oxidation activity was improved by significantly increasing the activity of superoxide dismutase (SOD) and glutathione peroxidase (GSH-Px), but decreasing malondialdehyde level in serum (P < 0.05), while significantly increasing the glucose and total protein (TP) level, follicle stimulating hormone (FSH), luteinizing hormone (LH), estradiol (E2), insulin, triiodothyronine (T3) and free triiodothyronine (FT3) levels, and IgG, IgA and complement (C3)activity in serum (P < 0.05). The results indicated that oral GABA improved laying performance and physical condition mainly by modulating hormone secretion, enhancing anti-oxidation and immune activity, and maintaining electrolyte balance. Fifty mg/kg was the optimum level for laying hens under heat stress in the present study.  相似文献

1. Experiments were conducted with laying hens to determine the effects of supplementing 0, 1.0, 2.0 and 3.0 or 4.0 g trp/kg diet to a maize and soyabean meal‐based laying ration (basal tryptophan = 1.66 g/kg) on tissue lipid concentrations.

2. Plasma cholesterol, triglycerides and nonesterified fatty acids were increased by supplementing the diet with 1.0 g trp/kg diet and decreased with 3.0 or 4.0 g trp/kg diet. A significant quadratic effect of supplemental tryptophan was observed on plasma lipids in most cases. The observed effects diminished with time. No consistent changes were observed in plasma glucose concentrations.

3. Total liver lipids were reduced by supplemental tryptophan at all concentrations.  相似文献
