The concentrations of growth hormone (GH), insulin-like growth factor I (IGF-I), thyroxine (T4), triiodothyronine (T3), reverse-triiodothyronine (rT3), triglycerides (Tri), free fatty acids (FFA) and glucose (Glu) were determined at 2, 4 and 6 weeks of age in blood plasma of male and female chickens of broiler lines selected for body weight (GL) or food conversion (FC). 2. Plasma concentrations measured in the same animal over a 24 h or a 2 week interval were not significantly correlated with each other. For different traits measured in the same plasma sample only the correlation between T4 and rT3 differed significantly from zero. 3. All traits were dependent on age. Line and sex effects were significant (P less than 0.05) for GH, T4, Tri, FFA and Glu. Additionally, line significantly influenced the plasma T3/T4 ratio and sex influenced plasma rT3. Interactions between line, sex and/or age were seldom significant. 4. Within line and sex, GH (at 6 weeks of age) and T3 (at 4 weeks of age) were negatively, and IGF-I and Tri (both at 6 weeks of age) positively correlated with the amount of abdominal fat at 6 weeks of age. No significant correlation between body weight at 2, 4 or 6 weeks of age and any of the plasma traits was found.  相似文献

Two studies were carried out to determine the effects of spaying and implanting on the growth of heifers and compare Ralgro and Synovex-S for spayed heifers. In the first study, 121 crossbred heifers were randomly allocated to four groups: intact and no implant; intact and progesterone and estradiol benzoate (Synovex-S); spayed and no implant; and spayed and Synovex-S. The average daily gain (ADG) and body weight (BW) data were analyzed as a 2 × 2 factorial experiment with a pasture effect which was considered as a block. Based on ADG for days 0-120, the response to implanting was 17.6% for spayed heifers and 1.8% for intact heifers. In the second study, 31 spayed heifers implanted with zeranol (Ralgro) were compared with 30 spayed heifers implanted with Synovex-S. The data were analyzed as a one-way analysis of variance. The ADG for spayed heifers on Ralgro did not differ significantly (p>0.05) from those implanted with Synovex-S over a period of 92 days, suggesting that both implants produce similar growth responses.  相似文献

The dose-dependent effects of naloxone on feed intake, and plasma chemicals (insulin, glucose, FFA) purportedly involved in feed intake regulation, were determined in 16-hr fasted sheep that were lean and chronically fed maintenance. Dorset ewes (n = 5) were treated with 0 (saline), 0.3, 1 or 3 mg/kg of naloxone in a generalized randomized block experiment with at least 7 d between successive doses. Feed intakes and plasma insulin, glucose and FFA were determined frequently during 24 hr of ad libitum intake after each naloxone treatment. The 0.3, 1 and 3 mg/kg doses of naloxone reduced (P less than 0.01) the 4-hr feed intake by 30, 40, and 60% respectively, whereas the initial feed intake (10 min) was decreased (P less than 0.05) 45% only by 3 mg/kg naloxone. However, total 24-hr intakes were similar across all doses because intakes between 4 and 24 hr of feeding in sheep treated with 0.3 (839 g), 1.0 (802 g) and 3.0 (1330 g) mg/kg naloxone exceeded (P less than 0.01) that in saline-treated sheep (391 g). Feeding-induced changes in plasma insulin, glucose and FFA concentrations were independent of naloxone treatment, suggesting that endorphinergic control of feed intake may not involve coincidental changes in plasma insulin, glucose and FFA levels which are thought to play a role in systemic regulation of appetite in animals. The endorphinergic regulation of appetite in sheep may involve the central nervous system, rather than peripheral opiate mechanisms that utilize blood-borne signals. Further, the ability of naloxone to suppress appetite in sheep appears inversely related to the duration of fasting or severity of negative energy balance.  相似文献

Six hundred sixty-five crossbred beef heifers initially weighing 225 kg were used in a completely randomized design to measure plasma glucose, lactate, and urea N concentrations at time of initial processing, determine the incidence of apparent bovine respiratory disease (BRD) in receiving cattle, and evaluate the effect of apparent BRD on subsequent cattle growth and carcass characteristics. Heifers were processed within 24 h of arrival, and processing included vaccination against common viral and clostridial diseases, recording rectal temperature, and sampling whole blood for subsequent measurement of plasma glucose, lactate, and urea concentrations. Heifers were monitored for clinical signs of apparent BRD, including depression, lethargy, anorexia, coughing, rapid breathing, and nasal or ocular discharge. Heifers exhibiting signs of apparent BRD received antibiotic therapy, and the number of times a heifer was treated for apparent BRD was recorded. Following the 36-d receiving period, heifers were transported to native grass pastures and allowed to graze for 136 d. At the end of the grazing season, heifers were transported to a commercial feedlot where they were adapted to a common finishing diet offered for ad libitum consumption. Following the 124-d finishing period, heifers were slaughtered and carcass data were collected. Heifers treated for apparent BRD had decreased plasma glucose (linear, P < 0.01), lactate (linear, P < 0.01), and urea N concentrations (linear, P < 0.06) measured at time of initial processing. Rectal temperature measured at time of initial processing tended to be greater (linear, P < 0.11) for heifers treated for apparent BRD. Heifers treated for apparent BRD during the receiving period had decreased overall ADG (linear, P < 0.10), final BW (linear, P < 0.01), HCW (linear, P < 0.01), fat thickness (linear, P < 0.01), and marbling score (linear, P < 0.03). These data suggest that initial plasma glucose and lactate concentrations might be affected by the health status of receiving cattle and that increased incidence of apparent BRD in cattle decreases ADG and carcass quality.  相似文献

Chopped hay supplemented with a volatile fatty acid salt mixture at 20% of metabolizable energy (ME) was fed to 30 Suffolk X Corriedale lambs (mean wt 29.6 kg) to determine the effects of dietary propionate on weight gain, body composition and plasma metabolites. Propionate accounted for 0, 25, 50, 75 or 100% of the salt mixture energy, and acetate accounted for the remainder. Each diet was fed at two levels of daily intake (158.7 and 130.6 kcal ME/W.75). Lambs on the high level of intake lost more (P less than .05) energy in feces, lost less (P less than .05) energy in CH4 and had carcasses with more (P less than .10) water and fat than lambs on the low intake level. Percentage of propionate in the salt mixture had no effect on ME or body composition of lambs. Increasing the percentage of propionate in the salt mixture increased plasma propionate in blood samples taken at 1 and 2 h after feeding (linear, P less than .05). Empty body weight gain per megacalorie of ME above maintenance increased as the percentage of propionate in the salt mixture increased, but not until propionate reached 75% of the salt mixture (linear, P less than .05; cubic, P less than .05). These results show that propionate in the blood has a positive, but nonlinear, effect on weight gain, even when energy intake is held constant.  相似文献

Fall born Angus x Hereford heifers were allotted to treatments at 9 mo of age to achieve the following growth rates: 1) fed to gain 1.36 kg/d (n = 10; HGAIN); and 2) fed to gain 0.23 kg/d for 16 wk, then fed to gain 1.36 kg/d (n = 9; LHGAIN). Growth hormone (GH), insulin-like growth factor-1 (IGF-I), insulin, glucose, nonesterified fatty acids (NEFA), and progesterone were quantified in twice weekly blood samples until onset of puberty. Body weight, hip height, and pelvic area were recorded every 28 d. Frequent blood samples (n = 8 heifers/treatment) were collected every 14 d, commencing on day 29 of treatment until onset of puberty to evaluate secretion of luteinizing hormone (LH) and GH. The HGAIN heifers were younger (369 d; P < 0.001), were shorter at the hip (115 cm; P < 0.05) and had smaller pelvic area (140 cm2; P < 0.10), but body weight (321 kg) did not differ at puberty compared with LHGAIN heifers (460 d; 119 cm; 155 cm2; 347 kg, respectively). The HGAIN heifers had greater (P < 0.05) concentrations of LH, IGF-I, and insulin in serum and glucose in plasma during the first 84 d of treatment than LHGAIN heifers, whereas LHGAIN heifers had greater (P < 0.05) concentrations of GH in serum and NEFA in plasma than HGAIN heifers. On Day 68 of treatment, HGAIN heifers had less mean GH (P < 0.01) and greater (P < 0.05) LH pulse frequency than LHGAIN heifers, whereas LH pulse amplitude and mean LH did not differ (P > 0.10) between treatments. Treatment did not influence secretion of LH and GH at 1 and 3 wk before puberty. Mean GH concentrations in serum and GH pulse amplitude in all heifers were greater (P < 0.05) 2 to 9 d (12.9 and 40.7 ng/ml, respectively) than 16 to 23 d (10.4 and 20.0 ng/ml, respectively) before puberty. Nutrient restriction decreased LH pulse frequency and delayed puberty in beef heifers. Furthermore, dramatic changes in mean concentration and amplitude of GH pulses just before puberty in beef heifers may have a role in pubertal development.  相似文献

Objective To determine morbidity and mortality rates in yearling heifers spayed by two methods under commercial conditions in northern Australia. Design In study 1,600 Brahman heifers were allocated to one of three treatments: physical restraint and ear-tagging (Control); physical restraint, ovariectomy by the Willis dropped ovary technique, ear-tagging and ear-marking (WDOT); or electroimmobilisation, ovariectomy via flank incision, ear-tagging and ear-marking (Flank). Heifers were monitored post spaying. Mortalities occurred at unanticipated times, so study 2 investigated their timing and cause in similar WDOT-spayed heifers (n = 574). Results In study 1, morbidity on the day of spaying was 6.0% in the Flank and 2.7% in the WDOT group (not statistically different). Spayed heifers showed behaviours indicative of acute pain/discomfort in the 6 h post spaying. Body weights and gains were significantly lower in the spayed compared with control heifers at days 21 and 42, and 5% of flank wounds were not healed at day 42. Mortalities were 0%, 1.5% and 2.5%, respectively, for Control, WDOT (3 estimated to have occurred on day 11) and Flank (2 on the day after spaying and 1 on each of days 5, 11 and 22). In study 2, the mortality was 0.5%, all within 4 days of spaying. Conclusions In yearling heifers, WDOT spaying resulted in lower morbidity and short-term mortality compared with flank spaying. Both methods compromised the health and welfare of some animals for up to 4 days and body weight gains were reduced during the 6 weeks post spaying.  相似文献

A sensitive and reproducible method permitting the estimation of 0,030-3,000 mM free fatty acids (FFA) in plasma with a standard error of 0,006 5 was developed. The method is based on the extraction of phosphate-buffered plasma with a chloroform-heptane-methanol mixture, formation of the cobalt complex and on the subsequent determination of the metal with 1-nitroso-2-naphthol. The method was used to obtain normal values (mean 0,547 mM range 0,147-1,197 mM) for Merino wethers fed lucerne hay.  相似文献

The effect of starving cockerels and geese for 8 d followed by re‐feeding on plasma glucose, FFA and triglycerides has been studied. In both species plasma glucose concentration fell while FFA concentration rose during starvation. The fall in plasma glucose was followed by a secondary gradual increase. Re‐feeding caused a rebound in plasma glucose, and restored the FFA to its initial concentration. Plasma triglycerides were not affected by starvation in either species. Re‐feeding was followed by a rise in plasma triglycerides in geese only.  相似文献

The plasma of the laying domestic fowl contains quantities of unesterified fatty acids, which are considerably in excess of those in the immature pullet or mature cockerel. The levels of the plasma FFA sometimes vary widely in a single bird, samples taken at intervals of 2–3 days yielding values ranging from 1000–3000 μ equiv. FFA./litre of plasma.

In an attempt to determine whether such variations were associated with different stages of the ovulatory cycle, blood samples were taken from groups of birds during the 24–26 hr. period between the laying of two eggs. In eight birds so studied, no consistent and large change was noted in the levels of the plasma FFA during the ovulatory cycle. It was concluded that the large variations in levels of plasma FFA found in samples taken at intervals of 2–3 days could not be attributed to an influence of ovulation on the release of oestrogenic substances into the blood stream.  相似文献

Intravenous infusion of 0.5 mmol/kg B.W. to lambs aged eight to 14, 15 to 21, 22 to 28, and 29 to 35 days led to higher blood plasma levels of insulin and total alpha-amino-N. Rises were stronger and longer lasting after infusion of 1.25 mmol/kg B.W. of arginine. Blood plasma levels of glucose and free fatty acids were temporarily decreased in response to infusion. Infusion to lambs aged between eight and 14 days of 0.5 mmol/kg B.W. of glycin did not change insulin, glucose nor free fatty acids, though total alpha-amino-N was very slightly increased for very short time. Infusion of 1.25 mmol/kg B.W. of glycin proved less effective than that of arginine with regard to higher levels of insulin and total alpha-amino-N.  相似文献

The present study examined the potency of smooth or rough Pasteurella haemolytica lipopolysaccharide infusion (LPS, 24 ng kg-1 min-1 for 500 min) on plasma cyclic-nucleotides and several free fatty acids (FFA) in calves. Both smooth or rough LPS increased plasma cAMP immediately to its maximum at 1 h of infusion, whereas plasma cGMP levels rose slowly and peaked 12 h later. The increases in cAMP levels were more prolonged for smooth LPS than rough LPS. The maximum plasma cAMP rise coincided with increases of several plasma FFA. Rough LPS increased plasma oleic greater than palmitic greater than stearic greater than linoleic acids in the second hour and reached their steady state levels between 2 h of infusion and 5 h post-infusion. Thereafter, oleic acid remained maximally elevated, while stearic acid decreased and other FFA returned to baseline. Smooth LPS had no effects on palmitic and stearic acids, but elevated oleic acid in an essentially similar manner to rough LPS and increased linoleic acid initially at 5 h, followed by decreases throughout post-infusion. These results demonstrate that endotoxemia produces early marked elevations in plasma cAMP, a gradual rise in plasma cGMP and disproportionate increases in several plasma FFA. The data also demonstrate that smooth and rough LPS differ in their abilities to increase plasma cAMP and FFA and these may be attributed to differences in their in vivo mechanisms of action. The study suggests that cAMP and cGMP may mediate actions of endotoxin at the cellular level and that differences exist in release and/or utilization of each FFA at different stages of endotoxemia.  相似文献
