An experiment was conducted to evaluate the capabilities of dual photon absorptiometry (PA), radiographic photometry (RP), and ultrasound (U) to estimate bone mineral content (BMC) and bone strength of a group of bovine third metacarpals (McIII). Metacarpals were chosen for evaluating BMC and bone strength because of their accessibility and susceptibility to biomechanical stress. The right and left McIII of 14 Angus heifers (24 to 32 mo of age) were collected at slaughter and all soft tissues (including periosteum) were removed. The BMC was estimated at both the midpoint and 3 cm proximal to the midpoint on the McIII diaphysis. Metacarpals then were tested by three-point bending to determine breaking load (BL) and breaking strength (BS). Bones were reassembled and two 2-cm sections were removed, one at the midpoint and one 1 cm proximal to the midpoint section. Sections then were ashed and ash content was expressed as grams per 2-cm slice and defined as BMC. Correlation coefficients (r) between BMC vs PA, RP, and U were .908 (P less than .0001), .967 (P less than .0001), and .565 (P less than .0001), respectively; r values between BS vs PA, RP, and U were .406 (P less than .05), .429 (P less than .05), and .499 (P less than .01), respectively, and r values between BL vs PA, RP, and U were .870 (P less than .0001), .865 (P less than .0001), and .588 (P less than .001), respectively. These data indicate that noninvasive techniques are useful in predicting BMC and BL in the bovine.  相似文献

Tarentaise heifers fitted with a rumen cannula (539 +/- 7.5 and 487 +/- 15.7 kg avg initial BW in Exp. 1 and 2, respectively) were used in two Latin square metabolism experiments having 2 x 2 factorial treatment arrangements to determine the effects of supplementation with Aspergillus oryzae fermentation extract (AO) or laidlomycin propionate (LP) on intake, digestion, and digestive characteristics of Neotyphodium coenophialum-infected (IF) or uninfected (FF) tall fescue (Festuca arundinacea) hay diets consumed ad libitum. Heifers were housed in individual stanchions in a metabolism facility with ambient temperatures controlled to range between 26.7 and 32.2 degrees C daily. Total feces and urine were collected for 5 d following a 21-d dietary adaptation period. In situ DM and NDF disappearance and ruminal fermentation characteristics were also determined. In Exp. 1, DMI was 24% greater (P < 0.01) by heifers offered FF than by those offered IF (6.7 vs 5.4 kg/d). Heifers fed 2 g/d AO tended (P = 0.09) to consume 4% more DM than those fed a diet without AO. Degradable DM and NDF fractions of IF were greater (P < 0.01) than those of FF, but AO supplementation did not affect situ disappearance (P > or = 0.42). In Exp. 2, DMI was 18.9% greater (P < 0.01) by heifers offered FF than by those offered IF (6.6 vs 5.5 kg/d). Heifers fed LP (50 mg/d) consumed 10.6% less (P < 0.05) DM than those not fed LP (5.7 vs 6/5 kg/d). Digestibility of NDF tended to be greater (P = 0.08) and digestibility of ADF was greater (P < 0.05) from FF than from IF. Conversely, apparent N absorption (%) was greater (P < 0.05) from IF than from FF. Heifers fed LP had lower (P < 0.05) ADF digestibility than those not fed LP. In situ degradable DM and NDF fractions were greater (P < 0.01) from IF than from FF. Diets supplemented with LP had higher (P < 0.01) indigestible DM and NDF fractions than those without LP. Propionic acid and total VFA concentrations were greater (P < 0.05) from heifers offered FF than from those offered IF and from heifers fed LP than from those not fed LP. Therefore, it appears the major effect of N. coenophialum was a reduction in forage intake and total-tract fiber digestibility in certain situations. Response to the feed additives was similar whether heifers were offered IF or FF and no evidence was apparent that either additive would improve performance substantially by animals consuming low-quality fescue hay diets.  相似文献

Fifty-nine crossbred heifers (427 kg) bred to one Hereford sire were randomly assigned at 75 d prepartum to two diets. Heifers were individually fed, and diets were isocaloric but contained either a low (LP = 81% NRC, .56 kg/d) or high (HP = 141% NRC, .98 kg/d) level of crude protein. Jugular vein cannulae were inserted into 16 LP and 16 HP heifers at 10 prepartum. Daily preprandial blood samples that were collected until parturition were analyzed for serum estradiol-17 beta (E2), progesterone (P4), glucose (G) and urea nitrogen (UN). Heifers fed LP gained slower than HP-fed heifers before calving (.73 vs 1.02 kg/d; P less than .01); immediate post-calving weights and condition scores were 418 vs 444 kg (P less than .01) and 5.4 vs 6.1 (P less than .01; LP vs HP, respectively). Calf birth weights (35.3 vs 36.1 kg), average calving difficulty score (1.6 vs 1.6) and percent assisted births (35.5 vs 35.7%) did not differ (P greater than .10; LP vs HP, respectively). Prepartum concentrations of UN (6.2 vs 13.5 mg/dl) and G (52.9 vs 58.2 mg/dl) were lower (P less than .05) and P4 (5.94 vs 4.26 ng/ml) was higher (P approximately equal to .07) in LP heifers. Prepartum concentration profiles were related to calving difficulty score (CD, 1 = no assistance to 3 = hard pull) for E2 (CD1 vs CD2 + CD3, P less than .01; CD2 vs CD3, P approximately equal to .01), P4 (CD1 vs CD2 + CD3, P less than .05), G (CD1 vs CD2 + CD3, P less than .05) and UN (CD2 vs CD3, P less than .05). After calving, all dams were maintained together on pasture and supplemented with alfalfa hay and grain mix until adequate range forage was available to maintain weight gains. Dams that were fed LP prepartum gained faster than HP dams during this period (.49 vs .15 kg/d; P less than .01). Prebreeding weights (443 vs 453 kg; LP vs HP) and condition scores (5.1 vs 5.1) did not differ, nor was the postpartum interval affected (44 vs 40 d; LP vs HP). There was no effect of dietary protein on dystocia or postpartum interval, although there were diet-induced differences in body weight and condition of the dams at calving. Results indicate that differences in prepartum profiles of serum steroid hormones and metabolites may be related to dystocia, in addition to relative fetal oversize.  相似文献

Six wether lambs (31 kg) were randomly assigned to two treatments (three lambs/treatment): a high protein intake (HP; 21 g N/d) or a low protein intake (LP; 12 g N/d). Each lamb received 860 g/d dry matter (DM) of a pelleted diet (75% corn-soybean meal, 25% cottonseed hulls) offered hourly in 24 equal portions. Single injections of 15N-labelled compounds were made into the ruminal NH3-N and blood urea-N pools to measure the rate of flux through, and transfer of N between, these and the bacterial N pool. Total tract digestibilities of DM and N were lower (P less than .05) for the LP than the HP treatment. Abomasal flows of total, feed or bacterial N tended to be greater (P greater than .05) in lambs fed HP than LP. Lambs fed HP excreted more (P less than .01) urinary N, yet retained a greater (P less than .01) amount of N than lambs fed LP (6.2 vs 1.8 and 9.7 vs 4.1 g N/d, respectively). Pool size and production rate for both ruminal NH3-N and blood urea-N were greater (P less than .05) for the HP than LP treatment. Lambs consuming HP degraded more (P less than .05) blood urea-N in the gastro-intestinal tract (13.4 vs 6.9 g N/d); however, lambs fed LP degraded a greater (P less than .05) percentage of synthesized body urea-N (88.7 vs 71.8%). Ruminal NH3-N absorption was greater (P less than .01) for the HP than LP treatment (3.1 vs .5 g N/d). Although the percentage of bacterial N derived from ruminal NH3-N was similar (P greater than .05) between diets (51.1 vs 63.9), a greater (P less than .05) percentage of bacterial N was derived from blood urea-N in lambs fed LP than HP (77.1 vs 30.2%). Lambs fed LP incorporated a greater (P less than .10) amount of blood urea-N into bacterial N than lambs fed HP (5.5 vs 2.6 g N/d). These data are interpreted to suggest that blood urea-N may provide a substantial quantity of N for bacterial protein synthesis and, thus, may be an important source of protein in the deficient animal. In addition, urea recycling may play an important role in the recovery of ruminal NH3-N lost through absorption in animals fed a high level of protein.  相似文献

Forty-six pregnant, crossbred, 2-yr-old heifers of large or small mature size were individually fed a 70% cottonseed hull diet during gestation. Heifers were fed at either 1.0% (nutritionally restricted) or 1.5% (nonrestricted) of body weight from 90 d gestation through parturition. Live weight, from 90 d gestation to parturition, was reduced by 20.5% and 1.0% for restricted and nonrestricted heifers, respectively. Whereas nonrestricted heifers gained maternal protein (3.2 kg) from d 90 through parturition, restricted heifers lost (P less than .05) protein (-5.4 kg) and mobilized twice (P less than .05) as much fat (49 vs 25 kg). Percentage of empty body protein increased 13.1 and 9.3% in restricted and nonrestricted heifers, respectively, whereas fat decreased (P less than .05) 31.7% (restricted) and 23.5% (nonrestricted) from 90 d to parturition. Daily metabolizable energy for maintenance (MEm) was greater for large than for small mature size heifers (169 vs 158 kcal/kg.75). Efficiency of ME use for gain was greater for small than for large mature size heifers (36.5 vs 31.2%). Efficiency in early gestation (45.4%) was greater than in late gestation (29.4%) and averaged 33.8% for 90 d gestation to parturition. Maintenance ME requirements increased 25% and efficiency of ME use decreased 35% with advancing stage of gestation. Nutritional restriction of heifers reduced (P less than .05) calf birth weight (27.3 vs 30.2 kg) and decreased gestation lengths (275 vs 282 d) compared with nonrestricted heifers. This research indicates that nutritional restriction of beef heifers alters birth weight, repartitions maternal tissues and changes rate of tissue mobilization.  相似文献

One lamb and three calf trials were conducted to determine if interactions existed between the effects of dry matter (DM) content of corn silage at harvest and sodium bicarbonate supplementation on diet digestibility, nitrogen balance, rate and site of digestion and feedlot performance. Corn plants were harvested from the same field when DM content was approximately 31% (early; E) or 44% (late; L). Sodium bicarbonate (1.2% of DM intake) was added in a completely mixed ration. When lambs were offered diets ad libitum, (trial 1), intakes were greater (P less than .05) for L-silage diets, but apparent digestibilities were similar. Nitrogen balance was greater for sodium bicarbonate-supplemented diets, and was a reflection of greater (P less than .10) DM intakes for these diets. At similar diet DM intakes, N balance was greater for L-silage diets, with no effects measured due to sodium bicarbonate addition. When growing, abomasally cannulated heifers (trial 2) were offered diets 12 times per day, a significant interaction among treatments was measured for total tract and acid detergent fiber (ADF) digestion. Adding bicarbonate to the E-silage diet increased (P less than .05) digestion by 9.1 percentage units (66.4 vs 75.5%) but decreased digestibility of the L-silage diet by 4.2 percentage units (73 vs 68.8%). Grams of ADF apparently digested in the rumen followed the same pattern as for total tract digestion. In trial 3, ruminal rates of liquid and particulate passage and in situ rats of NDF digestion were determined using four rumen-cannulated heifers calves.(ABSTRACT TRUNCATED AT 250 WORDS)  相似文献

Six ruminally fistulated steers (550 kg) and 24 heifers (315 kg) were used to determine the effect of source and amount of ruminal-escape lipid in a supplement on forage intake and digestion. Steers were used in a 6 x 6 Latin square digestion study to evaluate six supplementation treatments: 1) negative control (NC), no supplement; 2) positive control (PC), soybean meal:grain sorghum supplement; 3) low-Megalac (calcium salts of fatty acids; LM) supplement; 4) high-Megalac (HM) supplement; 5) low-Alifet (crystallized natural animal fat, LA) supplement; and 6) high-Alifet (HA) supplement. Supplements were fed at .30% of BW on a DM basis and were isoenergetic within fat levels (high vs low). Steers were fed mature brome hay (7.2% CP) at 1.5% of BW on a DM basis. In the forage intake trial, heifers were assigned randomly to the same supplement treatments. Prairie hay (4.4% CP) was offered at 130% of ad libitum intake. Dry matter and NDF digestibility, ruminal DM fill, indigestible ADF passage rate, and fluid dilution and flow rates were not different (P greater than .10) among treatments. Total VFA concentrations were greater (P less than .01) and acetate-to-propionate ratio (Ac:Pr) was less (P less than .01) in supplemented groups; however, neither source nor level of escape lipid influenced either total VFA or Ac:Pr. Forage intake was greater (P less than .01) for supplemented groups than for the NC. At the high level of fat inclusion, heifers supplemented with Alifet ate slightly more (P less than .05) forage than those supplemented with Megalac.(ABSTRACT TRUNCATED AT 250 WORDS)  相似文献

Eight Angus heifer calves (234 kg) were assigned to either a high (HP; 126 g N/d) or low (LP; 66.5 g N/d) protein intake. Calves received 4.8 kg DM/d consisting of 30% cottonseed hulls and 70% corn-soybean meal in equal portions at 4-h intervals. Single doses of 14C- and 15N-urea and 15N-ammonium sulfate were injected into the blood urea-N (BUN) and ruminal NH3-N (RAN) pools, respectively, to measure rate of flux through, and transfer of N between, these and bacterial N. Nitrogen balance was greater (P less than .05) for HP than for LP (56.9 vs 25.1 g N/d), but abomasal N flow as a percentage of N intake was greater (P less than .05) for LP than for HP (124 vs 71.1%). Pool size and net synthesis rate for both RAN and BUN pools were greater (P less than .05) for HP than for LP. Calves fed HP degraded more (P less than .05) BUN in the gastrointestinal tract than calves fed LP (37.4 vs 14.0 g N/d). Quantities of RAN absorbed from the rumen also were greater (P less than .05) for HP than for LP (14.2 vs 2.8 g N/d). The proportion of total gastrointestinal BUN degradation occurring in the rumen averaged 53 and 26% for LP and HP. Data are interpreted to suggest that net incorporation of BUN into bacterial protein (urea recycling) is inversely related to level of protein intake.  相似文献

Three digestion experiments and one growth experiment were conducted to determine site, extent and ruminal rate of forage digestion and rate and efficiency of gain by cattle offered alfalfa haylage supplemented with corn or dry corn gluten feed (CGF). In Exp. 1, eight steers were fed alfalfa haylage-based diets with substitution of corn for 0, 20, 40 or 60% of haylage in a 4 X 4 latin square. Increasing dietary corn substitution increased (P less than .05) OM, NDF and ADF digestion by steers but decreased (P less than .05) rate of in situ alfalfa DM digestion. In Exp. 2, five heifers were fed alfalfa haylage-based diets with increasing dietary levels of CGF in a 5 X 5 latin square. Increasing dietary CGF increased (P less than .05) OM, NDF and ADF digestion by heifers. In Exp. 3 and 4, cattle were fed alfalfa haylage-based diets containing either 20 or 60% corn or CGF. In Exp. 3, supplementation increased (P less than .05) OM and NDF digestion but level X supplement source interaction (P less than .05) occurred, with added CGF increasing OM and NDF digestion more than added corn. In Exp. 4, supplementation improved (P less than .05) DM intake, daily gain and feed efficiency. Dry matter intake and daily gain were greater (P less than .05) for 60% supplementation than for 20% supplementation. Overall, whereas increasing the level of dietary supplement increased (P less than .05) OM, NDF and ADF digestion, only corn addition decreased (P less than .05) rate of in situ alfalfa DM digestion. Daily gains and feed efficiencies were similar in cattle fed either corn or CGF with alfalfa haylage.  相似文献

Five Angus heifers (285 kg) with duodenal and ileal cannulas were used to study the effects of feeding mineral acid neutralizers on digesta and fecal pH, intestinal acid flow, DM, starch and CP digestion and amino acid absorption in cattle fed a high-concentrate diet (7.5 kg/d). The experimental design was a 5 x 5 latin square. Treatments included control diet alone or control diet with the addition of 1.60% defluorinated rock phosphate-medium (DRP-M, 77% greater than 150 mu but less than 1,180 mu), 1.60% defluorinated rock phosphate-coarse (DRP-C, 85% greater than 850 mu but less than 1,700 mu), 1.28% limestone (92% greater than 150 mu but less than 850 mu) or .50% MgO, (81% greater than 250 mu but less than 1,180 mu), as an as-fed basis. Ileal pH was increased (P less than .05) from 7.49 to 7.85 by MgO. Fecal pH was increased (P less than .05) in this order: MgO (7.18) greater than DRP-M (6.86) = limestone (6.86) = DRP-C (6.75) greater than control (6.54). Liquid flow to the duodenum was increased (P less than .05) an average of 19.7% by the mineral treatments. Duodenal acid concentrations (mEq/liter) were greatest (P less than .05) for DRP-M (65.4) and DRP-C (64.0) vs limestone (55.5) and MgO (54.4). Acid flow to the intestine was increased (P less than .05) to 4.02, 4.53 and 4.82 Eq/d for animals fed limestone, DRP-M and DRP-C, respectively, from 3.51 Eq/d for control animals. Total tract DM, starch and CP digestibilities were similar (P greater than .10) among treatments. Limestone and DRP-M increased (P less than .10) the partial digestibility of most amino acids by about 6.8%. Mineral treatments did not increase total tract digestion of starch or CP. However, cattle fed DRP-M and limestone may have used protein more efficiently.  相似文献

Fifty fall-weaned heifers with initial weights of 209 kg (yr 1) and 222 kg (yr 2) were used to determine effects of lasalocid on weight gains, forage intake and ruminal fermentation of stocker cattle grazing winter wheat pasture. The heifers grazed a single wheat pasture for about 100 d each year, and were individually fed 1.06 kg of supplement (6 d/wk) pro-rated to supply 0, 100 or 200 mg lasalocid.head-1.d-1. Also, eight mature Hereford steers with large rumen cannula were used to evaluate further effects of lasalocid (0 or 300 mg) on ruminal fermentation during two grazing periods (immature and mature wheat forage) of yr 2 and an additional third year. Daily gains of heifers fed 200 mg lasalocid/d were .11 kg greater (P less than .05) than those of heifers fed 0 or 100 mg lasalocid/d. One hundred milligrams lasalocid did not increase weight gains. Digestibilities of forage dry matter (DM) and organic matter (OM) were similar (P greater than .05) among treatments, and lasalocid did not affect (P greater than .10) forage intake. Ruminal ammonia concentrations (10.57, 15.22 and 17.81 mg/dl +/- 1.71) were increased (P less than .05) by both levels of lasalocid in yr 1, but differences among treatment means of 8.32, 11.95 and 11.66 (SE +/- 1.44) were not significant in yr 2. Lasalocid did not consistently affect total volatile fatty acids concentrations. The acetic:propionic acid ratios in heifers were not different (P greater than .05) among treatments, but were decreased (P less than .10) by lasalocid in cannulated steers.(ABSTRACT TRUNCATED AT 250 WORDS)  相似文献

A totaL of 160 crossbred pigs were fed a sorghum-soybean meal diet with ammonium polyphosphate (APP) or dicalcium phosphate (DiCa) as supplemental phosphorus (P) sources for growing-finishing swine. The diets contained P levels of .5 and .4% for the grower phase and .4 and .33% for the finisher phase. Ammonium polyphosphate was evaluated on the basis of pig performance and bone development and compared with DiCa as a standard. The first rib and third and fourth metacarpals were removed from eight barrows from each of the four treatments. Replacement of DiCa with APP as the P supplement did not affect (P greater than .05) average daily gain, average daily feed and feed:gain ratio of growing-finishing pigs. No effect on bone variables examined on the first rib and third and fourth metacarpals was obtained between pigs fed APP or DiCa. Pigs on the lower supplemental P levels had lower (P less than .05) dry fat-free weight and percentage ash for all three bones. The breaking force of the first rib was less (P less than .05) for the pigs fed the lower P supplements of APP and DiCa than for pigs fed the higher level of DiCa. A trend was observed for an apparent decreased P availability from APP than DiCa when fed at the lower level of supplementation, but this trend was not observed when APP was added to provide a P level to meet National Research Council requirements. Ammonium polyphosphate as a P supplement for growing-finishing swine was satisfactory for performance and bone mineralization as compared with DiCa.  相似文献

The frequency of occurrence of behavioral estrus without subsequent development of functional luteal tissue (termed nonpuberal estrus, NPE), was determined in 43 Simmental X Hereford-Brahman heifers. Blood samples were collected weekly from the start of the study to first behavioral estrus and then daily from d 1 (d 0 = estrus) through d 14 following first and subsequently observed estrous behaviors. All blood samples were analyzed for serum progesterone (P4) concentrations by radioimmunoassay. More heifers (62.8%) exhibited NPE than had luteal development after their first behavioral estrus (37.2%). There was a tendency for fewer light-weight heifers (less than or equal to 240 kg at the start of the experiment) to exhibit a puberal first estrus compared with the heavy-weight (greater than 240 kg at the start of the experiment) heifers (31.2% vs 68.8%, respectively; P = .12). Heifers that had a puberal first estrus were older (376 +/- 12 d vs 334 +/- 9 d, P less than .05) compared with heifers that had NPE. Weight at first behavioral estrus was similar between heifers that had a puberal first estrus and those that had NPE (298 +/- 8 kg and 289 +/- 6 kg, respectively). More heifers that had a puberal first estrus also had an elevation in serum P4 concentrations before that first estrus (64.3% vs 20.0%, P less than .05), and the serum P4 elevation was greater (2.5 +/- .4 ng vs 1.2 +/- .1 ng, P less than .05) than heifers that had NPE. We have concluded from these results that NPE is a common occurrence in heifers approaching puberty.(ABSTRACT TRUNCATED AT 250 WORDS)  相似文献

Fifteen spring-born Angus (AN) and 25 Brangus (BN) weanling heifers were used in a 2x5 factorial arrangement of treatments to evaluate the effects of breed and postweaning winter diet on heifer growth and development. Dietary treatments were warm-season perennial grass hay (H), ammoniated H (AH), H plus .68 kg/d cottonseed meal (HP), H plus .45 kg/d cottonseed meal plus 1.37 kg/d ground corn (HPE) and HPE plus 200 mg/d monensin (HPEM). Mean initial weight and age for the 107-d feed trial were 207 kg and 270 d. Brangus had .06 kg greater (P less than .05) ADG than AN during the trial. Although digestible DM intake (DDMI) relative to body weight was greater (P less than .10) for AN than for BN, ADG:DDMI was greater (P less than .05) for BN than for AN. Heifers fed H and AH lost weight, but heifers fed AH had 50% (P less than .05) less daily weight loss than those fed H. Daily gain increased (P less than .05) incrementally in response to sequential supplement additions of cottonseed meal (AH vs HP; -.10 vs .17 kg), ground corn (HP vs HPE; .17 vs .29 kg) and monensin (HPE vs HPEM; .29 vs .39 kg). Hay DM intake relative to body weight and DDMI were increased (P less than .01) by ammoniation. Intake did not differ between HPE and HPEM. Diet affected age at puberty (P less than .05), which decreased with increased dietary components. Weight differences among diet groups following the winter feed trial were largely eliminated prior to breeding. Nevertheless, H- and AH-fed heifers collectively weighed less (P less than .01) prior to breeding than did heifers of supplemented diet groups. Reproductive development tended to be adversely affected by weight loss during the postweaning period.  相似文献

This research was conducted to determine the effect of corn genetics and cutting height on the composition and nutritive characteristics of corn silage. An in situ study involving eight commercially available corn hybrids indicated main effects and interactions (P < 0.01) of hybrid and cutting height on NDF, ADF, and starch content and on in situ DM and NDF degradablility. Four ruminally cannulated Angus heifers (initial BW = 378 +/- 3 kg) were used in a 4 x 4 Latin square digestion experiment with a 2 x 2 factorial treatment arrangement. Main effects and interactions of hybrid (Pioneer Hi-Bred Int., Inc., hybrids 3335 and 3223) and cutting height (LO = 20.3 cm, and HI = 61 cm) were evaluated. Dietary treatment consisted of 40% chopped alfalfa hay and 60% corn silage. Although corn silage hybrids used were of equivalent maturity at harvest (60% milkline), 3335 treatments had 37.8% starch and 34.8% NDF, whereas 3223 treatments had 33.7% starch and 38.6% NDF. The LO treatments averaged 3.1 percentage units greater in NDF and 3.45 percentage units less in starch content than the HI treatments. Intake of DM was greater for heifers fed 3335-HI than 3335-LO; however, DMI was greater by heifers fed 3223-LO than 3223-HI (hybrid x cutting height interaction, P < 0.05). Starch intake was greater (P < 0.05) and NDF intake was less (P < 0.05) by heifers fed HI vs. LO and fed 3335 vs. 3223 dietary treatments. Digestibility of DM, starch, and NDF was greater (P < 0.05) by heifers fed 3223 than 3335 dietary treatments, but digestibility differences were not observed (P > 0.10) between cutting heights. Rate of in situ DM and starch degradability was not affected (P > 0.10) by hybrid or cutting height; however DM degradability was greater (P < 0.05) for HI than LO corn silage substrates at 8, 16, and 24 h of incubation. Rate of NDF degradability tended (P = 0.08) to be greater for 3223 than for 3335, and for LO compared with HI corn silage. Degradability of NDF was greater (P < 0.05) for 3223 compared with 3335 substrates at 24, 36, and 48 h of incubation. These data suggest fiber may not be an accurate measure of corn silage quality. Whereas cutting height affected chemical composition, we observed genetics to have a greater effect on corn silage quality.  相似文献

The aim of this study was to investigate whether dietary protein intake during gestation less than or greater than recommendations affects gilts growth and body composition, gestation outcome, and colostrum composition. German Landrace gilts were fed gestation diets (13.7 MJ of ME/kg) containing a low (n = 18; LP, 6.5% CP), an adequate (n = 20; AP, 12.1%), or a high (n = 16; HP, 30%) protein content corresponding to a protein:carbohydrate ratio of 1:10.4, 1:5, and 1:1.3, respectively, from mating until farrowing. Gilts were inseminated by semen of pure German Landrace boars and induced to farrow at 114 d postcoitum (dpc; Exp. 1). Energy and protein intake during gestation were 33.3, 34.4, and 35.8 MJ of ME/d (P < 0.001) and 160, 328, and 768 g/d, respectively, in LP, AP, and HP gilts (P < 0.001). From insemination to 109 dpc, BW gain was least in LP (42.1 kg), intermediate in HP (63.1 kg), and greatest in AP gilts (68.3 kg), whereas increase of backfat thickness was least in gilts fed the HP diet compared with LP and AP diets (3.8, 5.1, 5.0 mm; P = 0.01). Litter size, % stillborn piglets, and mummies were unaffected (P > 0.28) by the gestation diet. Total litter weight tended to be less in the offspring of LP and HP gilts (14.67, 13.77 vs. 15.96 kg; P = 0.07), and the percentage of male piglets was greater in litters of HP gilts (59.4%; P < 0.01). In piglets originating from LP and HP gilts, individual birth weight was less (1.20, 1.21 vs. 1.40 kg; P = 0.001) and birth weight/crown-rump length ratio was reduced (45.3, 46.4 vs. 50.7 g/cm; P = 0.003). Colostrum fat (7.8, 7.4 vs. 8.1%) and lactose concentrations (2.2, 2.1 vs. 2.6%) tended to be reduced in LP and HP gilts (P = 0.10). In Exp. 2, 28 gilts (LP, 10; AP, 9; HP, 9) were treated as in Exp. 1 but slaughtered at 64 dpc. At 64 dpc, LP gilts were 7% lighter than AP gilts (P = 0.03), whereas HP gilts were similar to AP gilts. Body composition was markedly altered in response to LP and HP feeding with less lean (P < 0.01) and greater fat content (P = 0.02 to 0.04) in LP and less fat content (P = 0.02 to 0.04) in HP gilts. Fetal litter weight and number, and embryonic survival at 64 dpc were not affected by the diets. These results indicated that gestation diets containing protein at 50 and 250% of recommendations and differing in protein:carbohydrate ratio led to marked changes in protein and fat metabolism in gilts resulting in fetal growth retardation of 15%, which mainly occurred during the second half of gestation.  相似文献

Effects of degree of obesity on basal concentrations of insulin, glucose, thyroxine (T4), triiodothyronine (T3), estradiol-17 beta (E) and progesterone (P) were measured in serum from 50 estrous and 73 diestrous Holstein heifers and the insulin response to glucose infusion was assessed in diestrous obese (n = 7) and lean (n = 7) heifers. Basal concentrations of glucose, T4, T3, E and P were not correlated with degree of obesity, although concentrations of glucose, T4 and T3 were higher (P less than .05) at estrus than diestrus. Basal concentrations of insulin at estrus and diestrus were positively correlated (r = .6; P less than .001) with degree of obesity but this relationship was different (P less than .001) between estrus and diestrus. Furthermore, there was interaction (P less than .001) between body condition and stage of the estrous cycle only for basal concentrations (mean +/- SE) of insulin, with the difference in insulin levels (microU/ml) between 12 obese and 12 lean heifers at diestrus (11.7 +/- 1.3 vs 6.7 +/- .6; P less than .05) increasing during estrus (21.9 +/- 2.4 vs 10.8 +/- 1.3; P less than .001). Insulin response to glucose infusion was greater in obese than in lean heifers, whether determined as actual concentration (P less than .01) or as insulin response areas (P less than .05) above base-line concentrations. Obese heifers were less responsive to insulin since hyperinsulinemia and euglycemia coexisted, and because glucose fractional removal rates were similar in both groups after glucose infusion in spite of greater concentrations of insulin in obese heifers. Thus, obesity in heifers was associated with insulin resistance, basal hyperinsulinemia and greater glucose-induced secretion of insulin.  相似文献

The objective was to determine correlations between individual bones and total body bone ash to identify the bone that is most representative of total body bone ash in growing pigs. Twenty growing pigs were allotted to 1 of 2 diets that were formulated to contain 60% or 100% of the requirement for standardized total tract digestible (STTD) P. Both diets had an STTD Ca to STTD P ratio of 1.90:1. Growth performance and carcass weights were determined. Metacarpals, metatarsals, femur, tibia, fibula, 3rd and 4th ribs, and 10th and 11th ribs, and all other bones from the left half of the carcass were collected separately. Each bone was defatted and ashed. Pigs fed the diet containing 100% of required Ca and P had greater (P < 0.05) average daily gain, gain to feed, and ash concentration (%) in total and all individual bones except femur and fibula compared with pigs fed the diet containing 60% of required Ca and P. Calcium and P concentrations in bone ash were not affected by dietary treatments. Weights (g) of bone ash, bone Ca, and bone P were greater (P < 0.05) or tended to be greater (P < 0.10) for pigs fed the diet containing 100% of required Ca and P. Correlation coefficients between the weight of ashed metacarpals, metatarsals, and tibia and the weight of total bone ash were >0.95. In conclusion, metacarpals, metatarsals, and tibia were more representative of total body bone ash compared with other bones.  相似文献

Twelve Angus x Hereford heifer calves (233 kg) were fitted with abomasal infusion cannulas and used to study N and endocrine responses to abomasally infused arginine (Arg). Heifers were allotted randomly to three treatment groups and received continuous abomasal infusions (2 liters/d) of water (CON) or Arg solutions providing .33 g Arg.HCl/kg BW (LOW) or .50 g Arg.HCl/kg BW (HIGH) each day. A 12-d dietary adjustment period preceded a 7-d infusion and collection period. Each calf received 4,544 g DM/d of a basal diet in equal portions at 0600, 1200, 1800 and 2400. Calves were housed in individual metabolism crates and fitted with urinary bladder catheters for total excreta collection. On d 1 and 5, blood samples were collected at 15-min intervals for 8 h between 1200 and 2000. Single samples were obtained at 1400 on remaining days. The infusion of Arg increased the quantity of N retained by heifers (P less than .01) and the percentage of total N retained (P less than .10); however, no differences were observed between LOW and HIGH heifers. Increased (P less than .01) urinary N excretion by Arg heifers was associated with greater (P less than .05) quantities of urinary urea N and ammonia N. Blood urea N and serum Arg concentrations were highest (P less than .05) in Arg heifers, whereas total serum AA concentrations were lower (P less than .05) in Arg heifers than in CON heifers. Serum glucose and insulin concentrations were not affected (P greater than .10) by treatment. Characterization of somatotropin (STH) profiles revealed that amplitude and frequency of STH pulses were not affected (P greater than .10) by treatment, whereas mean (P less than .10) and basal (P less than .05) STH concentrations were elevated in HIGH compared to LOW heifers on d 1 and 5. The similar N retention responses of LOW and HIGH heifers and similar STH profiles of CON and LOW heifers suggest that the stimulatory effect of the HIGH dose on STH secretion occurred only after tissue N requirements had been satisfied.  相似文献

Thirty foals of mixed breeding, from two consecutive years, were used in two 120-d experiments to evaluate the effects of supplemental feeding (creep feed) on growth in nursing foals. At 10 d postpartum, foals were randomly assigned either to a creep-fed group (CF) or an unsupplemented group (NCF). Initial measurements of body weight (BW), height at the withers (WH), third metatarsal length (MtIII) and third metacarpal length (McIII) were made at 10 d of age and at 30-d intervals thereafter. Medial and lateral cortical peak values for radiographic bone density, cortical width and cortical area at the midpoint of the third metacarpal were used to assess bone quality. Creep feed containing National Research Council (NRC, 1978) recommended levels for all nutrients was offered at 1.5% of BW per day. When compared with unsupplemented foals, supplemented foals had greater gains in BW (P less than .05), in WH (P less than .10) and in MtIII (P less than .05). Mean gains during the trial in BW, WH, MtIII and McIII for the CF foals were 133.3 kg, 22.8 cm, 2.1 cm and 1.9 cm and for the NCF foals were 117.6 kg, 21.2 cm, 1.5 cm and 1.9 cm, respectively. The mean value for the lateral cortical peak was slightly lower (P less than .10) for the CF foals. No differences (P greater than .10) were observed for the medial cortical peak, cortical width or cortical area of the third metacarpal. The results of this study indicate that a creep feeding program that supplies NRC-recommended nutrient levels can increase the rate of skeletal growth with little decrease in quality of bone.  相似文献
