OBJECTIVE: To determine whether certification in a Milk and Dairy Beef Quality Assurance Program (MDBQAP) was associated with a reduced risk of having antibiotic residues in milk and to define specific management factors that may have predisposed dairy farms to having violative antibiotic residues in milk. SAMPLE POPULATION: 124 dairy farms in Michigan that had > 1 violative residue in milk during 1993 and 248 randomly selected control farms in Michigan that did not have violative residues in milk during 1993. PROCEDURE: A pretested structured questionnaire was mailed to case and control farms. A conditional multivariate logistic regression model was developed to determine risk factors associated with having a violative antibiotic residue in milk. RESULTS: Certification in the MDBQAP did not significantly reduce the risk of having a violative antibiotic residue. Annual treatment of > 10% of a herd for metritis was associated with a reduced risk of having a violative residue. Evidence suggested that a routine request for a milk processor to perform residue testing was associated with a decreased risk of having had a violative antibiotic residue, but routine on-farm residue testing was associated with an increased risk of having had a residue. CONCLUSIONS AND CLINICAL RELEVANCE: MDBQAP certification was associated, although not significantly, with a reduced risk of having violative antibiotic residues in milk. Risk factors significantly associated with violative antibiotic residues are addressed by various critical control points in the MDBQAP and may be indicators for strengths and weaknesses of MDBQAP.  相似文献

The purpose of this study was to assess changes in dairy herd milk production and milk composition associated with changes in Salmonella contamination of bulk milk on dairy farms in southwestern Ontario. Twenty-three dairy farms that had submitted milk filters for culture from which Salmonella were isolated (cases) and 23 farms that submitted Salmonella-negative milk filters (controls) were included in the study. The rolling herd averages for milk and fat of case and control farms for the months of December 1985, December 1986 and April 1987 were compared and no significant differences were detected. Case and control farms were divided into three groups (A,B,C) on the basis of Salmonella culture results of milk filters submitted at various time periods throughout the study. Daily and monthly changes in milk production and composition parameters that reflected the time periods of milk filter culture were compared. The following unconditional associations between a changing Salmonella infection status on dairy farms and changes in milk production or composition variables were significant (p less than or equal to 0.05): group A: case farms had higher plate loop counts than control farms; group B: case farms had younger cows than control farms; group C: case farms had cows with longer average days in lactation than control farms. After analytical control of confounding variables, the disappearance of Salmonella from bulk milk supplies of dairy farms was associated with a decrease in percent fat and in somatic cell count.  相似文献

A study was performed in 1997 to estimate the prevalence and to investigate the etiology of subclinical mastitis in Swiss dairy herds managed under guidelines of controlled organic farming. It was planned as a longitudinal study over a period of 1 year and included a stratified random sample of 152 certified organic farms and 1907 cows. Two farm visits (the first from June to October when cows were on pasture, the second from January to March when cows were confined to barns) were performed on each farm. At each visit, farm management and individual-cow data (with emphasis on milking procedures and udder sanitation) were recorded. California mastitis tests (CMTs) were performed on each udder quarter of all cows in lactation. Milk samples with CMT >1+ were submitted for somatic cell counting (SCC), bacteriological examination and to test for antibiotic susceptibility. The SCC and germ-cell counts of monthly bulk-tank milk samples were available through Dairy Inspection and Advisory Services and milk production data of 567 herd-book cows were available from breeding associations. Possible individual and environmental predictors of subclinical mastitis were identified using logistic models adjusted for clustering of the data at herd and cow levels. Data were analyzed separately for cows from 7 to 100 and from 101 to 305 days post partum. Prevalences of subclinical mastitis at the quarter level were 21.2% for lactation period 7–100 days and 34.5% for 101–305 days post partum. The geometric mean SCC in bulk-tank milk samples was 85.6×103 cells/ml. Samples at 7–100 and 101–305 days post partum were positive for Staphylococcus aureus in 16.0 and 7.4%, for coagulase-negative Staphylococci in 51.5 and 50.6%, for Streptococcus agalactiae in 0.0 and 0.8%, for other Streptococci in 19.4 and 15.6%, for E. coli in 1.0 and 0.4%, and for Corynebacterium bovis in 25.7 and 45.1%, respectively. Risks of subclinical mastitis increased significantly with increasing days post partum and advancing age of cow. Cows that were sampled when staying in alpine dairies had considerably higher risks of subclinical mastitis than cows staying in home barns. Significantly lower risks of subclinical mastitis were observed in farms where CMT was performed regularly as a control measure. Bacteria in milk from cows with mastitis exhibited antibiotic resistance at a comparable frequency as found previously in conventional farms.  相似文献

A survey on ovine dairy farms directly transforming own‐produced milk, in the Italian Marche region, was carried out to assess flock and milking practices that may influence milk hygienic‐sanitary conditions. A census survey established that 24 dairy farms were located in this region. Bulk milk samples were collected throughout the milking period in each dairy farm in 2013. Analyzed variables were: (i) chemical parameters such as fat, protein and lactose content, dry matter and pH; and (ii) total bacterial (TBC) and somatic cell counts (SCC). Chemical parameter values were in agreement with published data while, geometric mean (GM) log10 SCC was 5.91 and TBC GM was 57 978 colony forming units/mL, in compliance with Eropean Union criteria. A positive correlation was found between SCC and TBC when GMs of all farm data were considered (Spearman's rho = 0.7925; P = 0.0001). Statistical analysis did not show significant correlation between SCC or TBC GM and dairy farm principal characteristics. Although SCC levels detected in the present study should suggest the need to implement mastitis control programs, Marche's dairy sheep flocks revealed a good hygienic condition level. This is an important aspect in implementing safety for end users of the final product.  相似文献

OBJECTIVE: To determine herd characteristics and management practices associated with milk production in dairy herds enrolled in official Dairy Herd Improvement Association (DHIA) programs in Ohio. SAMPLE POPULATION: 186 dairy farms in Ohio. PROCEDURE: All herds in official DHIA programs in 9 counties were invited to participate. Information regarding herd characteristics and management practices was obtained, using a standardized questionnaire. Bulk-tank milk samples were obtained for bacteriologic culture. Official DHIA test-day records were obtained, and associations were identified, using multivariable ANOVA procedures. RESULTS: Of 479 eligible producers, 186 (39%) participated, and consecutive bulk-tank milk samples were available for culture from 172 (36%). Streptococcus agalactiae and Mycoplasma spp were not recovered from bulk-tank milk samples, but Staphylococcus aureus was recovered from 64 (37%) herds. Mean (+/- SD) number of lactating cows in participating herds was 97+/-66, with 123 (66%) herds milking < 100 cows. The RHA was significantly associated with number of cows in milk, estimated percentage of herd detected in estrus, reported annual percentage of heifer calves born alive that died before 8 weeks old, percentage days in milk, use of bovine somatotropin during the preceding 2 years, and sex of the person completing the questionnaire. CONCLUSIONS AND CLINICAL RELEVANCE: In this study, the strongest indicator of milk production was number of cows in milk. However, merely adding cows to a herd should not be considered to guarantee increased milk production, because other management traits could be confounded with increased number of cows in a herd.  相似文献

OBJECTIVE: To determine whether there would be detectable antibiotic residues in milk obtained from dairy cattle with papillomatous digital dermatitis (PDD) after topical treatment with oxytetracycline. DESIGN: Randomized controlled clinical trial. ANIMALS: 28 lactating Holstein cows with PDD. PROCEDURE: Cows were assigned to 2 treatment groups. Treatment 1 (n = 16) consisted of spraying of PDD lesions with 15 ml of a solution containing 100 mg of oxytetracycline/ml; lesions were sprayed twice daily for 7 days, using a garden sprayer. Treatment 2 (n = 12) consisted of a one-time application of a bandage that consisted of cotton soaked with 20 ml of a solution containing 100 mg of oxytetracycline/ml. Milk samples were obtained before and after treatment and assayed for tetracycline content by use of high-performance liquid chromatography and a commercially available tetracycline screening test. RESULTS: None of the cows in either treatment group had violative residues of oxytetracycline in milk samples. CONCLUSIONS AND CLINICAL RELEVANCE: Producers treating lactating cows that have PDD, via topical application of oxytetracycline solution at the concentrations reported in this study, have a low risk of causing violative antibiotic residues in milk.  相似文献

A series of least-squares analytical models were developed in a cross-sectional epidemiologic study of the observed variability in within-herd high somatic cell count (SCC) prevalence, a measure of mastitis prevalence in dairy herds. The dependent variable, high SCC prevalence, was calculated as the 12-month rolling herd average percentage of lactating cows with milk SCC in excess of 283 000 cells ml−1.

The first analysis involved the results of a bacteriologic survey of bulk-tank milk samples for the presence of Streptococcus agalactiae and coagulase-positive staphylococci, the two most common contagious intramammary pathogens. The presence of either pathogen in bulk-tank samples was associated with significantly higher high SCC prevalence.

The second analysis involved responses to a questionnaire concerning management and mastitis control practices. Both the practices of post-milking teat dopping and dry-cow antibiotic therapy were associated with significantly lower high SCC prevalence.

The third analysis combined the data collected for the first two analyses so that the independent variables included both bulk-tank bacteriologic results and management and mastitis control practices. This model was able to explain a greater proportion of the variability in high SCC prevalence than either of the other two models. There were three variables associated with significant decreases in high SCC prevalence namely the absence of Streptococcus agalactiae in the bulk tank milk, the adoption of post-milking teat dipping and the practice of dry-cow antibiotic therapy of all cows.

Milk somatic cell counting is now widely accepted and practiced in many countries, and individual-cow SCC data are available from large numbers of herds at a minimal expense. By corroborating the role of post-milking teat dipping and dry-cow antibiotic therapy in mastitis control programs, this study establishes the usefulness of high SCC prevalence data for epidemiologic studies of mastitis control practices.  相似文献

The aim of this study was to explore whether anti-Ostertagia ostertagi antibody levels measured by ELISA in individual milk samples hold promise as a decision parameter for either herd-level decisions or selective anthelmintic treatments by investigating (1) the relationship between individual and bulk-tank milk ELISA results; (2) the relationships of individual milk ELISA results with non-parasitic cow factors and (3) the relationship between individual milk ELISA results and the milk production response after anthelmintic treatment. Twelve farms were randomly allocated to a whole-herd treatment with eprinomectin or a placebo in October 2004 and individual milk samples and a bulk-tank milk sample were collected 1 month before and 1 month after treatment. Linear mixed models were used to investigate the associations of ELISA results with (a) breed, actual milk production, lactation stage, somatic cell count, age and sampling month and (b) the milk production response after anthelmintic treatment. There was a reasonable correlation between the mean individual and bulk-tank milk ELISA results (r = 0.72). Individual cow ELISA results increased with higher lactation number and were lower in November than September. The associations with the other non-parasitic factors were weak and not significant. Milk yield responses to anthelmintic treatment were greater when treatment was given in early lactation and increased with the pre-treatment ELISA result and cow age. However, these latter two interaction terms were not significant when they were put in the model together. We conclude that (1) O. ostertagi ELISA results from individual milk samples may provide more information on the herd's parasitic status than a single bulk-tank milk result; (2) lactation number should be taken into account when interpreting ELISA results from individual milk samples and (3) the value of the O. ostertagi antibody level in individual cow milk samples to predict individual production responses after anthelmintic treatment remains equivocal.  相似文献

Heifers (n=136) from 5 herds were treated with a commercially available beta-lactam intramammary (IMM) antibiotic preparation containing cephapirin sodium at 10-21 d prior to anticipated parturition to evaluate the risk of antibiotic residues occurring in milk postpartum and to determine factors associated with antibiotic residues and IMM pathogen presence in milk postpartum. Mammary secretions collected from quarters before antibiotic administration and during weeks 1, 2 and 3 postpartum were analyzed for mastitis pathogens. Composite milk was collected at milkings 3, 6 and 10 postpartum and analyzed for beta-lactam residues using a microbial inhibition antibiotic residue screening test. Antibiotic residues were confirmed with beta-lactamase treatment and re-tested for residues. Residues were detected in 28.0, 8.82 and 3.68% of milk samples obtained at the third, sixth, and tenth milking postpartum, respectively. Increases in interval between prepartum antibiotic therapy and parturition and an increase in the postpartum interval to sampling were associated with a decrease in risk of antibiotic residues. The presence of antibiotic residues in milk at the third milking was associated with a reduced risk for IMM pathogen prevalence in the first 21 d postpartum. Lower somatic cell counts, an increase in mean milk yield over 200 days in milk and a reduction in IMM pathogen prevalence were associated with the presence of an antibiotic in milk postpartum. Screening milk for antibiotic residues in milk postpartum following prepartum antibiotic therapy in heifers is recommended to reduce the risk for antibiotic residue contamination of milk.  相似文献

Abstract

Data from a questionnaire regarding housing factors were merged with data from the milk recording databases (herd mean annual milk yield per goat, somatic cell count (SCC) and bulk milk bacterial count), and the material included 235 herds. Associations with housing factors were tested at herd level and at individual goat level. Housing in insulated buildings with no access to outdoor areas during the winter season, expanded metal grating and no use of bedding predominated. None of the housing factors evaluated were significantly associated with milk yield. In herds using water nipples, SCC was lower compared to herds using water bowls. SCC was also lower in herds with milking facilities in separate milking stalls as compared with combined feeding milking stalls in common pens. No significant associations were found between housing factors and bacterial counts, but the counts were lower in herds with high average milk yields per goat.  相似文献

Monthly bulk-tank milk samples were obtained from 415 Nova Scotia dairy herds in each of the months of July-September 1998 and tested using an indirect microtitre ELISA against a crude saline-extract, whole-worm Ostertagia ostertagi antigen. ELISA results (optical densities (ODs)) were consistent across months (r=0.85) but there was considerable variation among herds. A questionnaire was sent by mail to all producers; information on management factors that would potentially influence parasite burdens in the herds was obtained from 239 farms. Data on annual milk production, summer milk production (July-September) and seasonal decline in milk production were obtained from the Animal Productivity and Health Information Network (APHIN) database. Associations between management practices and ODs, and between ODs and milk-production parameters were studied. Some management practices known to be associated with parasite burdens had expected directions of association with the ODs, giving supporting evidence that the ELISA is a reasonable measure of parasite burden. Most notably, ODs were increased with greater exposure of heifers or milking cows to pasture. ODs were not associated with either annual milk production or seasonal decline in milk production. However, there was a substantial relationship between the herd OD value and the level of milk production during the summer. An increase in the OD from 0.58 to 0.83 (the interquartile range of ODs) was associated with a reduction in production of 1.25kg/cow/day.  相似文献

The objective of this study was to quantify the relationship of the levels of antibodies to Ostertagia ostertagi in bulk-tank milk samples from Prince Edward Island (PEI) dairy farms to milk production and to herd-management practices potentially related to gastrointestinal nematode infections. The milk samples were obtained from 289 to 322 dairy farms during 2000; production and management data were available from 197 and 200 farms, respectively. Cow exposure to pasture and whole-herd anthelmintic treatment were the only herd management variables significantly associated with antibody levels in the fall of 2000. An increase in antibody levels from the observed 25th percentile to the 75th percentile (interquartile range) was associated with a drop in milk production of 1.2 kg/cow/day. The results of this study indicate that the enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay for O. ostertagi antibody is a potentially useful technique to measure parasite exposure in adult dairy cows and that parasite burdens in lactating cattle in PEI have an important impact on milk production.  相似文献

A survey (Enquête Ecopathologique Bretagne) was conducted in France for 4 years (1986–1990) in 48 commercial dairy herds (25–80 cows per herd) located in Brittany. Three groups of herd-years were made up to study peripartum dietary factors associated with milk somatic cell counts in the early lactation period (ECC). The first group included 20 herd-years with high ECC (over 400 000 cells ml−1). The second group included herdyears with medium ECC (n = 20, median ECC 222 000) and the last group herd-years with low ECC (n = 20, median ECC 95 000). Herd data (components of the diet, milk yield and reproduction parameters, clinical diseases, biochemical and hematological indicators, body and dirtiness scores) were analyzed using discrimination by barycentric analysis. Two separate analysis were conducted according to study period (LG period, last 60 days of gestation; EL period, first 60 days of lactation).

The high ECC group had the following characteristics: (1) higher plasma gamma glutamyl transferase levels in the LG period; (2) higher quantities of cereal-based concentrates in the diet in the EL period; (3) shorter durations of feeding with Italian rye grass silage in the EL period. The relevance of the risk factors for high ECC are discussed with reference to dietary linolenic acid/linoleic acid ratio (through the synthesis of leukotrienes as chemotactic agents for the polymorphonuclear leukocytes), dietary energy supplies and liver fluke infestation in the herds. We speculate that nutritional factors could modulate the leukocyte activity in the milk and that supplementations with certain polyunsaturated fatty acids would be able to prevent the development of inflammation in the udder.  相似文献

The objectives of this study were to describe the depletion pattern of antibiotic residues (microbial inhibitory substances) from the milk of cows treated under field conditions of clinical disease and antibiotic administration, including both label and extra-label use, and to determine if the type of extra-label use, the route of administration, and the drug used were factors associated with prolonged shedding of residues in milk.

Milk samples from 138 cows, treated with a variety of antibiotic products on farms in southwestern Ontario in 1989 and 1990, were collected before treatment and for six days after cessation of treatment. Samples were tested for antibiotic residues with the Brilliant Black reduction test (BR-test) and the Bacillus stearothermophilus var calidolactis disc assay. In 13/138 (9.4%) of cow treatments, at least one milk sample was positive on both antibiotic residue tests after the label milk withholding time for the drug(s) used. In ten of these instances, the antibiotics were administered in extra-label fashion and in three the drugs were reportedly used according to label instructions. Extra-label use of antibiotics was significantly associated with increased risk of antibiotic residues in milk beyond the label withholding time. No significant differences in risk were observed among the various antibiotic products used in the study.

The farms involved in this study were selected on the basis of their proximity to our laboratory; therefore, the frequency of antibiotic residue detection after withholding times may not be indicative of the provincial or national situation. If farmers and veterinarians find themselves in a situation where extra-label use of an antibiotic is necessary, use of an alternative antibiotic that can be used at label dose and with a known withdrawal time may avoid a problem with residues.

Financially, mastitis is one of the most important diseases affecting dairy cattle in the United Kingdom. Seven commercial farms were monitored over a 2.5 year period and data from 1040 cows were included in a study that examined both straw yard and cubicle housing systems. The influence of genetic merit for milk production (PIN(95) and PTA(f+p)) on somatic cell counts (SCC) as an indicator of mastitis under commercial farm conditions was assessed. The mean genetic potential ( poundPIN(95)) was 39.0 (+/-0.80) and the mean 305-day milk yield (kg) was 7980 (+/-54.2). In all, 5618 monthly records of SCC and 1040 records of 305-day SCC were included in the analysis. A multiple regression model was used to assess the influence of genetic merit and the level of concentrate intake on SCC (the log(10) transformation was used) under the two housing systems. Significant interactions between genetic merit and housing system, and concentrate intake and housing system were found. Log(10) SCC increased with genetic merit when cows were housed in straw yard accommodation, but decreased when cows were housed in cubicle accommodation. The increase in SCC with concentrate feeding was higher for straw yards. For parity 2 animals, there was a significant positive correlation between PIN(95) and SCC (r(p)=0.184, P=0.003) but the correlations between 305-day milk production and SCC were negative for animals greater than parity 2.  相似文献

Bacteriological quality of raw cow's milk taken at different sampling points from four dairy farms and a milk collection centre in and around Addis Ababa was evaluated. Milk samples were aseptically collected from udder, bucket, storage container before and after cooling and upon arrival at the processing plant. A high increase in the mean total aerobic plate count was observed in milk samples taken from the bucket (1.1 x 10(5) cfu/ml), storage container before cooling (4 x 10(6) cfu/ml) and upon arrival at the processing plant (1.9 x 10(8) cfu/ml). The mean coliform counts ranged from 1.3 x 10(4) cfu/ml (storage container before cooling) to 7.1 x 10(4) cfu/ml (upon arrival at the processing plant). The hygienic quality of raw milk from the collection centre was poor with a mean total bacterial count of 1.3 x 10(7) cfu/ml. Milk sampled from the udder contained mainly staphylococci and micrococci as udder-specific bacteria, while samples taken at later stages were additionally contaminated with bacteria of environmental origin (especially Enterobacteriaceae). Lack of knowledge about clean milk production, use of unclean milking equipment and lack of potable water for cleaning purposes were some of the factors which contributed to the poor hygienic quality of raw milk in the study farms.  相似文献

OBJECTIVE: To determine tissue depletion of penicillin G in calves after oral ingestion with milk replacer and estimate a withdrawal period. DESIGN: Longitudinal controlled trial. ANIMALS: 26 Holstein calves. PROCEDURE: Once daily, 24 calves were fed milk replacer containing procaine penicillin G (0.68 mg/kg [0.31 mg/lb] of body weight); 2 calves served as controls. After 1 feeding, 12 calves were euthanatized in groups of 3 each 4, 6.5, 9.5, and 13 hours after feeding. After 14 days, 12 calves were euthanatized in groups of 3 each 4, 6.5, 9.5, and 13 hours after the final feeding. Concentrations of penicillin G were determined in tissues, blood, and urine by use of high-performance liquid chromatography. RESULTS: Penicillin G was not detected in muscle samples of treated calves. The highest concentrations of penicillin G in plasma, kidney, and liver were 13 ng/ml, 92 ng/g, and 142 ng/g, respectively. Thirteen carcasses had violative drug residues; 12 had violative residues in the liver only, and 1 had violative residues in the liver and kidney. A 21-hour withdrawal period was estimated. CONCLUSIONS AND CLINICAL RELEVANCE: Liver had the highest concentration of penicillin G and was most likely to have violative residues. Feeding calves milk containing penicillin G has the potential to cause violative drug residues in tissues. It is recommended to observe an appropriate withdrawal time prior to slaughter if calves are fed milk from cows treated with penicillin G.  相似文献

Increased milk somatic cell counts (SCC) are used as an indicator for bovine mastitis. During mastitis, polymorphonuclear leukocytes (PMN) become the predominant cell type. Shortly after parturition, the severity of mastitis is increased and several PMN functions are downregulated. Apoptotic and necrotic processes of PMN could influence SCC and PMN functions. In this study, the percentages of apoptotic and necrotic PMN in blood and milk from early and midlactating healthy cows were compared. Apoptosis and necrosis of PMN were quantified using a dual-color flow cytometric procedure with fluorescein labeled annexin-V (green) and propidium iodide (red). Using this technique three different subpopulations of bovine PMN could be detected: apoptotic cells (high intensive green fluorescence), necrotic cells (high intensive green and high intensive red fluorescence) and viable cells (low intensive green and low intensive red fluorescence). Following a 4 h incubation of blood from both groups of cows at 37 degrees C to induce apoptosis, the mean percentage of apoptotic blood PMN was significantly higher (P < 0.01) in early lactating cows (15.1%, n = 9) compared with midlactating cows (5.3%, n = 10). The mean percentage of necrotic PMN remained lower than 5% in all cows. In contrast to blood, no significant difference was found between the percentage of apoptotic PMN in milk from early (41.2%, n = 7) and midlactating cows (34.0%, n = 8). The percentage of necrotic PMN in milk from early lactating cows (25.9%, n = 7) was significantly higher than that in midlactating cows (14.2%, n = 8) (P < 0.05). Higher percentages of apoptotic as well as necrotic PMN were consistently found in milk compared to blood in all cows. From these results, it can be concluded that spontaneously induced apoptosis was higher in blood PMN from early lactating cows than in blood PMN from midlactating cows. The higher percentage of necrotic milk PMN in early lactating cows than in midlactating cows could be explained by the induction of secondary necrosis.  相似文献

Somatic cell count (SCC) in milk is inversely related to dairy cow productivity and milk quality. In an effort to improve product quality, and indirectly farm productivity, regulatory limits on somatic cell counts have been established by many of the major dairy producing countries. The purpose of this paper was to assess the impact of regulations on bulk milk somatic cell counts in Ontario and to assist producers in meeting regulatory limits through development of prediction models. Through the use of a transfer function model, provincial SCC was found to have dropped by approximately 60,000 as a result of the reduction program. Limits of the regulatory program, seasonality and herd characteristics were found through time series cross-sectional models to have an impact on prediction of SCC at the farm level, but the major influence was historical SCC levels.  相似文献
