Madam:– For several years we have been concerned with developing safe and effective methods of administering zinc to farm animals for the control of facial eczema. In none of our trial work involving repeated daily, weekly and fortnightly dosing of zinc oxide to sheep not vaccinated against salmonellosis has salmonellosis been encountered. Recently two reports(1 Allworth, M.B., West, D.M. and Bruere, A.N. 1985. Salmonellosis in ram hoggets following prophylactic zinc dosing. N.Z. vet. J., 33: 171171. Acute enteritis and deaths in .sheep from Salmonella hindmarsh associated with oral dosing with zinc oxide. N.Z. vet. J., 33: 148149.  [Google Scholar]) have suggested that high doses of zinc oxide have played a part in the aetiology of two outbreaks of salmonellosis in sheep and we thank the authors of both papers for pointing out their field observations. Sir:- We have recently encountered a case of brodifacoum poisoning in a farm dog which had access to Talon WB* rodenticide. Brodifacoum, a new warmfarin-related anticoagulant, acts by depressing the production of factors II, VII, IX, and X in the coagulation cascade. The compound is reported to be less toxic to birds and domestic animals than it is to rats and mice.(4) Technical Bulletin. 1983. Recognition that one infective agent could cause ram epididymitis and ewe abortion in New Zealand was due to McFarlane et al. (1952 McFarlane, D., Jebson, J. L., Hartley, W. J., Salisbury, R. B. and Boyes, B. W. 1953. Aust. vet. J., 29: 145153. [Crossref] [Google Scholar]) classified it in the genus Brucella—possibly a variant of Br. melitensis. Recent implementation of regulations regarding pseudo-rabies has necessitated obtaining suitable blood samples from large numbers of swine for a critical serologic (serum neutralization) test. A clear, nonhemolyzed sample of uncontaminated serum is crucial to the accuracy of the test. Therefore, the purpose of this article is to review a technique for collecting blood from the veins of swine located cranial to the first pair or ribs, ventral to the trachea and dorsal to the manubrium sterni This basic technique has been utilized for over 35 years(1) Carle, B. Sudden death after routine dosing of dogs with the anthelmintic, bunamidine, is probably due to the onset of ventricular fibrillation (Fastier et al., 1968 Fastier, F. N., Menrath, R. L. However, it has not proved possible to discover conditions under which ventricular fibrillation can be obtained consistently in dogs by treatment with bunamidine and adrenaline. This makes it difficult to test in dogs what was thought would be a reasonable prophylactic measure, namely, administration of a beta-blocker.
