Abstract

Extract

In January 1975, Elaphostrongylus cervi was identified in material derived from red deer in the Fiordland National Park (Mason et al., 1976 Mason, P. C., Kiddey, N. R., Sutherland, R. J., Rutherford, D. M. and Green, A. G. 1976. Elaphostrongylus cervi in red deer. N.Z. vet. J., 24: 2223. [Taylor &; Francis Online] [Google Scholar]). This paper describes lesions associated with the presence of adult worms in the fascia and epimysium of skeletal muscles, lesions in lymph nodes, and lung lesions resulting from the presence of the first stage larvae of Elaphostrongylus cervi. This parasite is also known to cause meningo-encephalitis and spinal demyelination with consequent ataxia in red deer (Dykova, 1969 Dykova, I. 1969. Elaphostrongylus cervi (Cameron, 1931) in the central nervous system of red deer (Cervus elaphus). Folia parasit (Praha), 16: 7474.  [Google Scholar]).  相似文献

Protostrongylid larvae were recovered from the faeces or lungs of red deer (Cervus elaphus), roe deer (Capreolus capreolus) and reindeer (Rangifer tarandus) in Scotland during 1981. Typical protostrongylid first-stage larvae were also recovered from possible intermediate hosts, the grey field slug (Agriolimax reticulata) and the white-soled slug (Arion fasciatus). All these protostrongylid larvae were microscopically identical to those of the nematode Elaphostrongylus cervi. Despite careful search, adult E cervi were not found, but it is concluded that infection with E cervi is widespread in Scottish deer.  相似文献

An 8-week-old male moose calf was inoculated with 360 infective third-stage larvae (L3) of E. cervi. The calf started to expel first-stage larvae (L1) of E. cervi in faeces 63 days after inoculation. The highest faecal larval count of 1,920 L1 per gram faeces was recorded 133 days post inoculation. Clinically, intermittent lameness, mild ataxia and general stiffness were observed over a 3 months’ period from day 75 after inoculation. The symptoms were moderate, faded gradually and were not seen during the last three weeks of the observation period. The calf had a good appetite and the bodyweight increased continuously throughout the experiment. On day 202 after inoculation the calf was euthanized and autopsied. Adult E. cervi were found in the epidural space of the central nervous system (CNS) and in skeletal muscles. Oedema, haemorrhages, discolouration and extensive inflammatory reactions were observed in the fat and loose connective tissue of the epidural space between the 5 th cervical vertebra and cauda equina. Nematodes or lesions indicating nematode infestation could not be demonstrated in the leptomeninges or in the neural parenchyma of the CNS. Numerous eggs and larvae of E. cervi associated with moderate pathological changes were observed in the lungs.  相似文献

A cross-sectional serological survey of Dictyocaulus viviparus was carried out to determine the prevalence of lungworm infections in 28 dairy cattle farms distributed in five selected areas from Costa Rica. The influence of area, farm, host (breed, age and lactation number) and ecological factors (altitude and life zones) on the presence of lungworm infection was analyzed. A sub-sample of 924 sera collected between September 1998 and July 1999 was processed by ELISA (Ceditest). A total of 162 (17.5%) animals from 26 (93.0%) farms showed antibodies against D. viviparus. The overall seroprevalence detected among areas was Poás 25.0%, Cartago 24.3%, Tilarán 22.0%, Alfaro Ruiz 12.0% and San Carlos 12.1%. Using analysis of variance no significant influence of area and host factors on D. viviparus infections was determined, whereas the variable farm within area was highly significant (p<0.001). However, altitude and life zones showed significant association to seropositive animals, when a Chi-square test was applied. In altitudes of 1000-2000 m (p<0.001) and life zones of Lower Montane moist forest and Montane moist forest (p<0.001) D. viviparus infections in bovines were significantly higher. The results obtained in this study indicate a high D. viviparus seroprevalence in the analyzed farms and that the factors farm, altitude and life zones were significantly related to lungworm infections.  相似文献

Cell adherence to larvae of Dictyocaulus viviparus in vitro   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
Bovine eosinophils survived for up to 48 hours in vitro in a medium of undiluted bovine serum and became adherent to the surface of Dictyocaulus viviparus larvae earlier than other cells found in peripheral blood. Cell adherence was associated with a heat labile factor in normal bovine serum and a heat stable factor in hyperimmune serum. A factor associated with leucocytes in vitro appeared to cause larval immobility. Cells from calves treated with levamisole behaved identically to those from other sources. It is suggested that eosinophils are an important element in host defence against D viviparus infection.  相似文献

Fifteen calves, each infected with approximately 3000 third stage larvae, were used to compare the tendencies of two strains of Dictyocaulus viviparus to inhibit at the fifth larval stage and to evaluate the efficacy of ivermectin. There were notable differences between the strains. While greater than 99% of worms developing from infection with an Alpine strain remained inhibited 42 days after infection, only 0-26% of those recovered following infection with a U.K. laboratory strain were arrested. Neither adult nor immature D. viviparus were present in the lungs of animals treated with ivermectin subcutaneously at 200 micrograms/kg body weight 28 days after infection with the Alpine larvae.  相似文献

Congenital and probable developmental vestibular disease is reported in a litter of English cocker spaniel puppies. The syndrome was marked by loss of balance and ataxia initially, but subsequent compensation has left only one individual with "permanent" head tilt.  相似文献

Eighteen calves aged approximately three months were each infected with Dictyocaulus viviparus larvae at a rate of 30/kg bodyweight. Seven days later they were randomly allocated to three groups of six animals. Calves of group 1 were controls. Calves of group 2 were given levamisole at a dose rate of 10 mg/kg and calves of group 3 were given ivermectin at a dose rate of 200 micrograms/kg. The anthelmintic activity of these two drugs was compared using clinical, functional, parasitological and pathological parameters. The results showed that the efficacy of ivermectin, given at a therapeutic dose, against immature D viviparus was higher than that of levamisole, given at double the recommended dose.  相似文献

Eighteen calves about 3 months old were inoculated with 3,000 Dictyocaulus viviparus infective larvae. Three groups of 6 calves each were formed. Thirteen days after inoculations, 3 of the 6 group 1 control calves were given vehicle subcutaneously (SC) and the group 2 calves were given ivermectin at the dose rate of 200 micrograms/kg, SC. Thirty-five days after inoculation, the remaining 3 calves in group 1 were given vehicle SC and the group 3 calves were given ivermectin at the dose rate of 200 micrograms/kg, SC. Necropsies were performed 42 days after inoculations. A total of 474 D viviparus was recovered from the group 1 control calves, whereas none was recovered from the calves treated when the nematodes were in the 4th stage of development (group 2) or adult stage (group 3).  相似文献

Four of eight red deer calves which had been artificially reared and were lungworm free were vaccinated with bovine lungworm oral vaccine when eight weeks old; the other four were not vaccinated. Three of each category were challenged daily with 500 Dictyocaulus viviparus infective stage larvae per kg liveweight for 17 days when six months old while one in each category was left as an unchallenged control. The effects of challenge were monitored and all challenged deer and one control were killed for post mortem assessment. Challenge with D viviparus was associated with reduced food intakes and weight gains but vaccinated calves were less affected than unvaccinated ones. The reaction of the alveolar tissue of red deer lung to D viviparus was mild in vaccinated and unvaccinated animals and differed from that of bovine lung in that alveolar epithelialisation was limited and hyaline membrane formation and interstitial emphysema were not seen. The disease was most evident in and around airways and was less in vaccinated calves. It was concluded that young red deer are tolerant to D viviparus but will readily acquire infection.  相似文献

An involvement of Pilobolus species fungus in the dispersal of Dictyocaulus viviparus third stage larvae from dung to surrounding herbage under Irish conditions was investigated. The presence of Pilobolus kleinii on artificial dung pats containing first stage larvae of D viviparus was associated with a 19-fold increase (P less than 0.05) in numbers of third stage larvae recovered from the surrounding herbage. A subjective examination of natural dung pats showed that the presence of Pilobolus species was significantly correlated with hours of bright sunshine (r = -0.5, P less than 0.01), total rainfall (r = 0.41, P less than 0.05) and the height of herbage surrounding the pats (r = 0.31, P less than 0.001). A multiple regression analysis showed that meteorological parameters and the height of surrounding herbage accounted for 38 per cent of the variation in growth of Pilobolus species on dung pats. The incidence of extensive damage to natural dung pats within five days of deposition, caused by biotic factors, another possible cause of D viviparus third stage larvae dispersal, varied from 0 to 92 per cent of the pats depending on their degree of dryness.  相似文献
