Passing an electric current (50 Hz, 400 V open circuit, current limited to 1.5 A) from two electrodes acting as a common single electrode set applied on each side of the dorsal surface of the neck (cervical vertebrae C2 to C5 region) to another placed on the brisket of young bulls causes fibrillation of the cardiac muscle, does not induce epileptiform changes in the electroencephalogram, and produces a state of body rigidity. Passing the same electric current through the same neck electrodes, now acting as two separate electrodes, without the brisket electrode, does induce epileptiform activity similar to that seen with head-only stunning, does not fibrillate the heart, and produces a state of limb rigidity lasting for some time after the stun. Given that the presence of epileptiform activity is a criterion for effective electrical stunning and is indicative of insensibility, neck-to-brisket stunning as described here does not appear to be humane.  相似文献

Cattle are normally stunned electrically by three sequential cycles, first a three-second head-only cycle, to stun the animal, secondly a 15-second cardiac cycle, to induce ventricular fibrillation (cardiac arrest), and thirdly a four-second discharge cycle, to reduce convulsions after death. An effective and immediate stun was produced when > or =1.15 amps sinusoidal AC at 50 Hz was applied between the nose and neck electrodes for less than one second. However, when applied for three seconds, head-only currents of >0.46 amp sinusoidal AC at 50 Hz were sufficient to induce epileptiform activity in the brain, identified as high amplitude low frequency activity in the electroencephalogram. The induction of effective head-only electrical stunning resulted in an average interval of 50 seconds before the return of rhythmic breathing movements, and positive corneal and palpebral reflexes. The cardiac arrest cycle successfully induced ventricular fibrillation when >1.51 amps sinusoidal AC at 50 Hz was applied for five seconds between the nose and brisket electrodes.  相似文献

  1. The study assesses the effectiveness of reversible head-only and back-of-the-head electrical stunning of chickens using 130–950 mA per bird at 50 Hz AC.

  2. Three trials were conducted to compare both stunning systems: (a) behavioural assessment of return of consciousness, (b) insensibility to thermal pain, and (c) assessment of return of brain activity with visually evoked potentials (VEPs).

  3. Assessment of behaviour suggested that the period of unconsciousness following head-only electrical stunning was shorter in hens compared to broilers.

  4. Stunning across the back-of-the-head delayed the time to return of brainstem function compared to stunning with standard head-only electrodes. Additionally, back-of-the-head stunning produced a more prolonged period of electroanalgesia compared to head-only.

  5. Based on examination of return of brain function with VEPs in hens, back-of-the-head stunning produced a shorter-lasting stun than standard head-only. However, even for standard head-only, the stun was notably shorter than previously reported. In some birds, brain function had returned within 9 s after the end of stunning.

  6. The results suggest that some birds may recover consciousness prior to or during the neck cut. Based on these findings, back-of-the-head stunning and standard head-only stunning of hens should not be recommended without further development.

1. Broiler chickens were killed using 90% argon in air, or 30% carbon dioxide and 60% argon in air or 120 mA per bird in a waterbath with a 50 Hz alternating electric current. Ventral or unilateral neck cutting was performed at 1, 3 or 5 min after killing. In addition, a group of broilers was stunned with 120 mA per bird in a waterbath using 1500 Hz alternating current and were bled out with a ventral neck cut within 20 s from stunning.

2. Blood leaving the neck wound was collected in a bin placed on an electronic balance and a computer program calculated the cumulative blood loss up to 100 s after neck cutting.

3. Bleed‐out was significantly affected by killing method and time of neck cutting. Broilers killed with the carbon dioxide‐argon mixture bled‐out less than those killed with argon or 50 Hz electric current. When compared with the 1 min neck cutting interval, a delay of 3 or 5 min resulted in a lower bleed‐out. High frequency electrical stunning and ventral neck cutting within 20 s resulted in a slightly higher bleed‐out than those recorded for the killing methods. However, within argon killing, a delay of 3 or 5 min in ventral or unilateral neck cutting had no significant effect on the bleed‐out. In broilers killed with the carbon dioxide‐argon mixture a 3 min delay in ventral neck cutting or a 5 min delay in unilateral neck cutting resulted in lower bleed‐out.

4. Neck cutting of broilers within 5 min after argon killing or 3 min after killing with the carbon dioxide‐argon mixture would result in a satisfactory bleed‐out.  相似文献

1. The effectiveness of water bath electrical stunning of chickens with a constant root mean square (rms) current of 100 mA per bird delivered for 3 s using 100, 200, 400, 800 and 1500 Hz sine wave alternating current (AC) was investigated in layer hens. The quantitative changes occurring in the electroencephalogram (EEG) and somatosensory evoked potentials (SEPs) were used to determine the effectiveness of stunning. The changes occurring in the EEG were evaluated using Fast Fourier Transformations (FFT) and the SEPs were averaged to determine whether they were present or abolished. 2. The results of FFT indicated that stunning of chickens with a constant rms current of 100 mA per bird using 100 or 200 Hz induced epileptiform activity in all the hens, immediately followed by a reduction in the total (2 to 30 Hz) and relative (13 to 30 Hz) power contents in the EEG frequency bands indicative of unconsciousness and insensibility. The SEPs were abolished in the majority of hens stunned with 100 Hz and all the hens stunned with 200 Hz. 3. By contrast, stunning using 400, 800 or 1500 Hz failed to induce epileptiform activity in all the birds, the total and relative power contents in the EEG frequency bands showed a substantial increase, rather than reduction, and the SEPs were also retained in the majority of chickens. It is therefore suggested that stunning using these frequencies failed to stun them satisfactorily. In these birds, occurrence of a painful arousal, rather than unconsciousness, could not be ruled out. 4. It is therefore suggested that water bath electrical stunning of chickens with a minimum rms current of 100 mA per bird delivered using 100 or 200 Hz would be adequate to ensure bird welfare under commercial conditions, provided both the carotid arteries in the neck are severed at slaughter. On humanitarian and bird welfare grounds, a rms current of greater than 100 mA per bird should be applied whilst using frequencies of 400 Hz or more of sine wave AC for water bath electrical stunning of chickens.  相似文献

1. Behavioural and neural responses of 65 broilers to head-to-cloaca electrical stunning were evaluated and meat quality was assessed on two groups of 25 broilers stunned either head to cloaca, or in a conventional water bath method.

2. On the EEG recordings, a general epileptiform insult was observed when applying a current of 100?mA (100?Hz) or 70?mA (70?Hz) for 1·5?s. This general epileptiform insult shows a tonic, clonic and exhaustion phase followed by spikes of alpha, beta, theta and delta waves with duration of on average 34?±?12?s and 39?±?23?s respectively. Electrocardiograms (ECG's) were made from cattle and pigs after slaughter using only the left arm and right arm recording electrodes of a portable electrocardiogram with 12 recording electrodes. Functional heart activity was demonstrated in cattle after stunning with a captive bolt, nonpenetrative percussive methods and a head-only electrical technique. Recordings compatible with ventricular fibrillation were made in the majority of cattle and pigs subjected to a head-to-chest form of electrical stunning. In cases where the placement of stunning electrodes was defective, functional cardiac activity could be detected. Movement artefact on the ECG trace associated with epileptiform seizures following head-only electrical stunning was a technical problem. This was reduced by restunning the animal with a captive bolt before taking an ECG. The examination of ECG's made subsequent to slaughter could form an important component of the quality control of Halal slaughter or a slaughter process using the head-to-body electrical stunning techniques. Adoption of this would be facilitated by the development of a more simple and less sensitive electrocardiograph than that used in the present investigation.  相似文献

1. Ducks were given 85, 150 or 250 mA electrical stunning currents; the proportion experiencing a ventricular fibrillation at stunning and the incidence of downgrading conditions were determined.

2. The ducks were less susceptible to a ventricular fibrillation than chickens or turkeys, but a stunning current of 250 mA induced a ventricular fibrillation in 99% of the birds.

3. The incidence of reddening of the rear margin of the wing was lowest in the 85 mA current treatment. Eighteen of 23 red deer (Cervus elaphus) at a deer slaughtering premises were successfully stunned with an apparatus modified from that normally used to stun sheep. The five unsuccessful electrical stuns were associated with poor head restraint and poor head contact by the electrodes. The median stunning current was 0.9 A, and in the majority of cases the duration of stunning was less than 1 second. The signs of the electrically induced epileptiform seizures in the deer were dissimilar to those seen in sheep, cattle and pigs, in that the initial tonic phase was less marked, and of shorter duration. A similar shorter and less obvious tonic phase was noted in four deer shot with a captive bolt pistol. Two animals which were electrically stunned, and bled within 10 seconds, showed no signs of recovery while bleeding. The electroencephalograms of four deer stunned with currents of 1.3 A for a duration of either 0.5 or 1.0 seconds were recorded under more controlled conditions. All four animals developed electroencephalograms typical of an epileptiform seizure. The animals exhibited behavioural reactions similar to the other 18 animals in the trial at the deer slaughtering premises and were rendered unconscious for between 54 and 122 seconds. The electroencephalogram activity amplitude was greater than that recorded immediately before stunning and took between 6 and 9 seconds to build up to maximum value. It is concluded that, providing the heads of deer are adequately restrained, head-only electrical stunning can be incorporated into a humane method of slaughter for deer.  相似文献

1. The aim of the experiment was to investigate the effect of gaseous stunning methods on the carcase and meat quality of broilers (dead weight 1.0 to 2.3 kg) in comparison with electrical stunning.

2. Two replicates of broilers (age 54 and 59 d respectively) were stunned in carbon dioxide, in argon or by electric current, and the carcases were plucked either by a mechanical plucker or by hand.

3. Carcase and meat quality were evaluated to determine the effect of these stunning treatments and plucking methods. The quality factors measured included pH at 20 min post‐mortem, ultimate pH, texture and colour of the pectoralis major muscle, and the incidence of carcase appearance defects, cooking loss, broken bones and bruises in the breast and leg muscles.

4. Stunning method had a significant effect on pH at 20 min, ultimate pH, texture and colour of breast meat. Plucking method had a significant effect on the cooking loss and texture.

5. Argon stunning resulted in fewer muscle haemorrhages, a more rapid early post‐mortem fall in pH and more tender breast meat than in the electrically stunned broilers; carbon dioxide stunned broilers had intermediate values for pH decline and meat tenderness but were not significantly different from argon stunning regarding muscle haemorrhages.

6. Appearance defects occurred to a similar extent in all the stunning methods and mechanical plucking resulted in 4 times as many defects compared with hand plucking; the incidence of broken bones was higher in mechanically plucked broilers than in hand plucked carcases.

Electrical stunning is the most common stunning method in the FRG. Beside manual stunning with tongs (70-250 V) there are also automatic high-voltage stunning devices (400-1000 V) in use. In the FRG the maximally allowed stunning voltage is 250 V for manual working apparatus. Electrical stunning is acceptable from the animal point of view, if a minimal current of 1.2 ampere is reached, immediately after the beginning of the stunning operation. This current provokes an epileptic insult combined with unconsciousness. Immobilisation combined with stiffness can be reached with lower currents. The current, flowing during stunning operation, depends on both stunning voltage and resistance between electrodes and surface of the animal. Current curves were recorded during manual stunning operations with different kinds of tong and different voltages. It was found, that a stunning voltage lower than 250 V under practise conditions is not acceptable from the animal point of view, because 1.2 ampere were not reached within 1 second. Electrical stunning with 250 V is acceptable, when an exact positioning of the tongs is possible because of a short fixation of the pig. The following demands can be formulated for an effective electrical stunning of pigs: 1. pigs should be wet prior to stunning. 2. positioning of the tongs must be done in such a way that the brain lies on the shortest line between the two electrodes. 3. between electrodes and pig surface should be an intensive contact. 4. stunning voltage should be at least 250 V, better higher. 5. bleeding should be done not later than 20 seconds after the end of the stunning, the time between bleeding and scalding being at least 3 minutes.  相似文献

Somatosensory evoked responses (SEP) in a turkey's brain were determined after water-bath stunning with a 150-mA (constant current) delivered with 50, 300 or 600 Hz, or with 75 mA, delivered with 50-Hz alternating current (AC) in order to evaluate the effectiveness of stunning. Ninety-four BUT 9 turkey hens 12 weeks of age were surgically implanted with EEG recording and left wing nerve stimulating electrodes 4 hours before stunning. They were individually stunned by immersion of the head and upper part of the neck in a water bath for 4 s. Using a 150-mA current, all birds stunned at 50 Hz showed cardiac arrest and a flat EEG immediately after the stun with no SEP recovery. The incidence of cardiac arrest at stunning decreased with increasing current frequency but SEP were lost in all birds. In birds that survived the stun, the duration of SEP abolition was on average 69 and 34 seconds at 300 and 600 Hz, respectively. Stunning with a 75-mA AC, delivered with 50 Hz, induced cardiac arrest in 32 per cent of turkeys. SEP were abolished in only 71 per cent of the birds that survived the stun, with an average duration of SEP of 66 seconds. The results indicate that increasing the frequency of a 150-mA AC current leads to a decreased stunning efficiency. A current of 75 mA per bird is unacceptable since 29 per cent of the birds do not show SEP abolition.  相似文献

1. Hens were subjected to electrical stunning at 85, 105 or 125 mA per bird. The time to recovery of physical behaviour was measured in those birds which did not experience a cardiac arrest at stunning.

Summary

The course of post‐mortem breakdown of glycogen and ATP in turkey pectoralis major muscle was markedly influenced by several ante‐ and peri‐mortem variables. Application of a proper stunning procedure was highly effective in preventing peri‐ and post‐mortem muscle stress reactions.

The physiological level of glycogen and ATP was not significantly affected by road transportation covering 260 km. Birds which rested for 24 hrs following transportation had lower glycogen and ATP levels at the moment of slaughter than non‐rested birds.

According to the changes in the rate and extent of post‐mortem biochemical reactions, several meat characteristics such as water‐holding capacity, colour, and tenderness were significantly changed.

Furthermore, the results also indicate that turkey breast muscle is susceptible to a PSE‐like condition as described in pork.  相似文献

1. For a bird to be adequately stunned, sufficient electric current needs to reach the brain in order to induce an epileptic seizure. Methods are presented for determining the percentage of the stunning current which reaches the brain.

2. A transverse section of the thorax was examined and tissues including epithelium, fat, muscle, liver, keelbone and heart, were tested for the percentage of current flowing through each tissue.

3. It was found that the proportion reaching the brain varied from bird to bird whereas, with the exception of a slight variation in the proportion reaching the heart, that flowing through the other tissues located in the thorax was similar in all the birds tested.

4. The variability in current reaching the brain and to some extent the heart may determine whether a bird is stunned, inadequately stunned or killed after having entered a water‐bath stunner.  相似文献

1. The effectiveness of electrical stunning of poultry was assessed where the recommended current of 105 mA per bird was applied using a range of waveform-frequency combinations. In addition the effect of the treatments on subsequent carcase quality was investigated. 2. The use of frequencies greater than 50 Hz was associated with a failure to induce ventricular fibrillation. 3. All waveform-frequency combinations were equally effective in producing a stunned state; the time to recovery was not affected by stunning treatment but was significantly longer in heavier birds. 4. The use of high frequency (500 Hz and 1500 Hz) stunning currents resulted in a decrease in carcase downgrading and a marked reduction in the occurrence of breast muscle haemorrhages, which represent significant commercial benefits to be gained by their use.  相似文献

This research aims to understand the prevalence of religious slaughter practices in Italy. Two different ways of slaughtering animals are identified. Conventional slaughter is performed with prior stunning; kosher slaughter is practiced without stunning. Halal slaughter is performed for most animals without stunning. Halal slaughter with prior stunning is acceptable for 5.90% of small ruminants. For Halal slaughter in Italy, the terms “religious slaughter with stunning” and “religious slaughter without stunning” should be used to differentiate religious slaughter practices, keeping animal welfare in perspective.

The efficiency of bleeding of broilers (g blood/kg liveweight) was measured after stunning them with either 45 per cent carbon dioxide in air for two minutes or with 2 per cent oxygen (achieved by displacing air with argon) for two minutes or with an electric current (77 or 104 mA at 50 Hz for four seconds). The results indicated that the initial rate of bleeding was higher in the electrically stunned broilers with non-fibrillated hearts than in the gas stunned broilers and electrically stunned broilers with fibrillated hearts. This difference was significant up to 60 seconds after neck cutting (P less than 0.05) but after 140 seconds all the broilers had bled out to a similar extent (30 to 33 g/kg liveweight). It is concluded that after gas stunning the time interval between neck cutting and scalding should be 60 to 140 seconds.  相似文献

Summary

In order to combat certain notifiable diseases eradication programs have been developed, which include the destruction of an infected or suspected herd. Experiments were conducted to develop a method for euthanasia of large numbers of pigs.

The electrocution experiments under laboratory conditions were performed in a wooden sided box with a steel floor and a curtain of chains. When the pigs touched the chain curtain with their noses, they received a current flow which lasted for more than 2 seconds, and they developed cardiac arrest or fibrillation. The pigs which touched the chain curtain with their rumps vocalised and became recumbent immediately.

An automatic electrocution unit was constructed with a conveyor (negative electrode) and 3 curtains of chains (positive electrodes). Over 6000 pigs infected with a notifiable disease were killed with the apparatus. Only 2 piglets younger than 1 week old were not killed by the current (1000 V, > 2 s.). From the point of view of animal welfare the automatic electrocution apparatus is an efficient method for killing large numbers of pigs (older than I week of age) infected with a notifiable disease.  相似文献

Sir;- In New Zealand, calves are often electrically stunned before slaughter. However, electrical stunning is not usually used for adult cattle, primarily because the large size of the adult animal makes restraint more difficult, resulting in less reproducible stunning, with potential danger to personnel from animal movement. In addition, the slaughter of cattle may be inhumane if the stunning process does not ensure immediate and permanent insensibility (Newhook and Blackmore 1982b). The use and humaneness of electrical stunning of sheep and cattle have been the subject of our recent research, in which we have addressed and resolved many of these problems. We wish to relate our observations in the context of head-only electrical stunning of cattle followed by electro-immobilization to maintain insensibility and ensure carcass stillness.  相似文献
