Low sheep productivity in North Benin hampers economic development, and improvement can contribute to reduction of rural poverty and food insecurity. To reduce one of the constraints to the productivity of Djallonké sheep, high mortality during suckling in full rainy and start dry season, we tested hygienic measures and medication in improved housing. The effect of the two treatments and their combination on lamb performance and the internal rate of return (IRR) were compared to a control. For each treatment, survival and growth were observed in 20 lambs, living in 38 herds. Good housing and hygiene (daily cleaning and fortnightly disinfection of stable and water and feed troughs) reduced mortality and increased growth of suckling lambs until 3 months. Good housing plus medication (unique injection of vitamins and amino acids and with ivermectine for deworming, weekly tick treatment by spraying, and in case of diarrhea, antibiotic treatment) reduced mortality, but growth was not higher than the control. Accounting labor opportunity, the IRR was about equal for both, but capital investment was lower for the hygiene treatment which is thus more accessible to poor farmers. The combination of both treatments increased growth and benefits compared with the hygiene treatment, but decreased the IRR.  相似文献

Summary

A small scale serological survey for antibodies to maedi‐visna virus among 15 flocks of sheep in Morocco revealed the infection in one flock. Infection appeared to be related with imported sheep. In addition, two abattoir surveys yielded, 0.1% lungs with gross and histological lesions suggestive of maedi.  相似文献

ObjectiveTo determine the impact of epidural phentolamine on the duration of anaesthesia following epidural injection of lidocaine–epinephrine.Study designBlinded randomized experimental study.AnimalsA group of 12 adult ewes weighing 25.7 ± 2.3 kg and aged 8–9 months.MethodsAll sheep were administered epidural lidocaine (approximately 4 mg kg–1) and epinephrine (5 μg mL–1). Of these, six sheep were randomized into three epidural treatments, separated by 1 week, administered 30 minutes after lidocaine–epinephrine: SAL: normal saline, PHE1: phentolamine (1 mg) and PHE2: phentolamine (2 mg). The other six sheep were administered only epidural lidocaine–epinephrine: treatment LIDEP. Each injection was corrected to 5 mL using 0.9% saline. Noxious stimuli were pinpricks with a hypodermic needle and skin pinch with haemostatic forceps to determine the onset and duration of sensory and motor block. Heart rate, noninvasive mean arterial pressure (MAP), respiratory rate and rectal temperature were recorded.ResultsThe onset times were not different among treatments. Duration of sensory block was significantly shorter in SAL (57.5 ± 6.2 minutes), PHE1 (60.7 ± 9.0 minutes) and PHE2 (62.0 ± 6.7 minutes) than in LIDEP (81.7 ± 13.4 minutes) (p < 0.05). Duration of motor blockade was significantly shorter in PHE1 (59.4 ± 5.4 minutes) and PHE2 (54.3 ± 4.0 minutes) than in SAL (84.8 ± 7.0 minutes) and LIDEP (91.5 ± 18.2 minutes) (p < 0.01). MAP in PHE2 was decreased at 10 minutes after administration of phentolamine (p < 0.05).Conclusion and clinical relevanceEpidural administration of 5 mL normal saline after epidural injection of lidocaine–epinephrine reduced the duration of sensory but not motor block in sheep. Epidural administration of phentolamine diluted to the final volume of 5 mL diminished both the duration of sensory and motor block in sheep administered epidural lidocaine–epinephrine.  相似文献

A slaughterhouse survey to determine prevalence and larval burden of Oestrus ovis larvae in sheep and goats was performed monthly during one year in Pézenas, South of France, northern mediterranean region. A total of 1303 sheep and goat heads were selected at random. O. ovis larvae were found in 274 sheep out of 631 (43.4%), and the prevalence rate varied from 14.3% in February to 65% in October. The mean number of larvae in infected sheep heads was 10.86 with 9.24 L1, 0.91 L2 and 0.71 L3. One hundred and ninety-one goats out of 672 were infected (28.4%), and the prevalence rate varied from 6.25% in September to 47.1% in April. In infected goat heads, the mean parasitic burden was 5.35 with 4.04 L1, 0.73 L2 and 0.58 L3. These results confirm worldwide observations indicating that the prevalence and the parasitic burdens are less in goats than in sheep.  相似文献

Background: Administration of progesterone(P4) to ewes during the first 9 to 12 days of pregnancy accelerates blastocyst development by day 12 of pregnancy, likely due to P4-induced up-regulation of key genes in uterine epithelia responsible for secretion and transport of components of histotroph into the uterine lumen. This study determined if acceleration of blastocyst development induced by exogenous P4 during the pre-implantation period affects fetal-placental development on day 125 of pregnancy. Suffolk ewes(n = 35) were mated to fertile rams and assigned randomly to receive daily intramuscular injections of either corn oil vehicle(CO, n = 18) or 25 mg progesterone in CO(P4, n = 17) for the first 8 days of pregnancy. All ewes were hysterectomized on day 125 of pregnancy and: 1) fetal and placental weights and measurements were recorded; 2) endometrial and placental tissues were analyzed for the expression of candidate mRNAs involved in nutrient transport and arginine metabolism; and 3) maternal plasma, fetal plasma, allantoic fluid, and amniotic fluid were analyzed for amino acids,agmatine, polyamines, glucose, and fructose.Results: Treatment of ewes with exogenous P4 did not alter fetal or placental growth, but increased amounts of aspartate and arginine in allantoic fluid and amniotic fluid, respectively. Ewes that received exogenous P4 had greater expression of mRNAs for SLC7 A1, SLC7 A2, SLC2 A1, AGMAT, and ODC1 in endometria, as well as SLC1 A4, SLC2 A5, SLC2 A8 and ODC1 in placentomes. In addition, AZIN2 protein was immunolocalized to uterine luminal and glandular epithelia in P4-treated ewes, whereas AZIN2 localized only to uterine luminal epithelia in CO-treated ewes.Conclusions: This study revealed that exogenous P4 administered in early pregnancy influenced expression of selected genes for nutrient transporters and the expression of a protein involved in polyamine synthesis on day 125 of pregnancy, suggesting a ‘programming' effect of P4 on gene expression that affected the composition of nutrients in fetal-placental fluids.  相似文献

Abortion and death caused by Francisella tularensis were well recognized in range flocks of domestic sheep in Idaho, Montana, and Wyoming in the first 6 decades of the 20th century. The current report describes 4 episodes of tularemia in 3 range flocks in Wyoming and South Dakota in 1997 and 2007 (1 flock was affected twice). Flock owners reported that ticks were unusually numerous and commonly present on sheep during outbreaks. Tularemia presented as late-term abortions (3 episodes) or listlessness and death in lambs and, to a lesser extent, ewes (1 episode). Lesions were multifocal pinpoint necrotic foci in tissues, particularly spleen, liver, and lung. An immunohistochemical procedure demonstrated F. tularensis, particularly in necrotic foci. The diagnosis was corroborated by bacterial isolation and, in individual cases, by serology, fluorescent antibody assay, and/or polymerase chain reaction detection of F. tularensis. Diagnosticians in endemic areas should include tularemia as a differential diagnosis when investigating late-term abortions or outbreaks of fatal illness in young lambs, particularly in years of high tick activity and when characteristic necrotic foci occur in spleen, liver, and lung.  相似文献

Test sensitivity and specificity for the FAMACHA(?) clinical test for anaemia due to haemonchosis have previously been shown to be adequate in differentiating between heavily/less heavily infected sheep, but these properties give no objective guidance for setting the optimum threshold at which anthelmintic treatment should occur. The aim of this work was to use Receiver Operating Characteristic (ROC) curves to evaluate the diagnostic accuracy of FAMACHA(?) testing by estimating the area under the ROC curve, and to use two-graph ROC curves to decrease subjectivity in selecting treatment thresholds on two farms with contrasting management. Test diagnostic accuracy, and thus discriminating power as determined by the area under the ROC curves, ranged from "moderate to good" on the first farm, and from "moderate to high" on the second farm for haematocrit (the Gold Standard for the test) cut-offs of ≤ 22% and ≤ 19% on both farms respectively. Accuracy of classification between haematocrit cut-offs was not significantly different within farms, but did differ significantly between farms, with test accuracy being highest on the second farm at both haematocrit cut-offs (p<0.05). The results also showed the suitability of the two-graph ROC curve approach for discriminating not only between different levels of accuracy of evaluators, but also to give an indication of the so-called ROC cut point (i.e. the desired threshold level) at which animals should be treated for a given level of risk of loss. The approach appears to have the potential not only to validate the diagnostic accuracy of the test across the complete testing range (i.e. all FAMACHA(?) categories from 1 to 5), but also to compensate for such inaccuracy by allowing objective adjustment of the threshold treatment level according to the output of the two-graph ROC method.  相似文献

The objective of this study was to determine the pharmacodynamic effects in sheep of the anaesthetic alfaxalone in a 2-hydroxypropyl-β-cyclodextrin formulation. Seven Ripollesa sheep, weighing 43.0±6.6 kg, were used in the study. Twenty-four hours after instrumentation, the sheep were anesthetised with alfaxalone (2 mg/kg bodyweight IV) in cyclodextrin. Heart rate, arterial blood pressure, respiratory rate and arterial blood gases were recorded. Alfaxalone administration resulted in minimal cardio-respiratory depression. Time to standing from anaesthesia was 22.0±10.6 min. Apnoea was not observed in any of the sheep. Significant differences from baseline were not observed in respiratory rate or arterial blood pressure. Heart rate increased significantly (P<0.05) immediately after administration, returning to control values at 20 min. The calculated haemoglobin saturation (SO2) decreased significantly during the first 15 min after alfaxalone administration. The arterial pH decreased significantly during the first 30 min of the study, although no significant differences from basal values were observed in the arterial partial pressure of carbon dioxide (PaCO2). The results showed that alfaxalone in 2-hydroxypropyl-β-cyclodextrin administered as an IV bolus at 2 mg/kg produced minimal adverse effects and an uneventful recovery from anaesthesia in sheep.  相似文献
