Information on feeding habits and ecology of the bush squirrel,Paraxerus cepapi cepapi. in the Transvaal was obtained both from analyses of 82 alimentary tracts and by direct observation of animals. Bush squirrels were found to be insectivorous as well as herbivorous, feeding on seeds, leaves, berries and flowers. They preferred ground cover which was not too dense and fed both on the ground and in trees depending on food availability.  相似文献

A survey of gastrointestinal parasite infections of young (<6 months old), immature (6–12 months old) and adult (>12 months old) dairy cattle on 16 farms in Kiambu District, Kenya was conducted during a dry season (September 1991 to January 1992) and during a wet season (March to July 1992). The survey was based on monthly coproparasitological examination of cohorts and worm counts in tracer calves. The effects of age, sex, farm and season on the prevalence and intensity of helminth and coccidial infections were determined. Faecal egg and oocyst counts revealed that the overall prevalences were: strongyles (including trichostrongyles) (85.5%), liver flukes (Fasciola gigantica) (34.0%), coccidia (30.9%) and tapeworms (9.6%). Eight species of the protozoan Eimeria were identified, the most prevalent species being E. bovis and E. zuernii. The most prevalent nematode genera were Haemonchus, Cooperia, Oesophagostomum and Trichostrongylus. Season, farm and age of the animals had a significant (p<0.05) influence on the intensity of infection with strongyles, liver flukes and coccidia, whereas the sex of the animals had no significant (p>0.05) effect on the prevalence or intensity of infections. A higher intensity of infection with strongyles and coccidia was found in the wet season than in the dry season (p<0.05). The age-specific intensity was in the following order: for strongyles, immature animals of 6–12 months of age had the highest egg counts, followed by young calves and adults. Calves had significantly (p<0.05) higher oocyst counts than immatures or adults. Liver fluke egg counts did not differ significant (p>0.05) between immatures and adult cattle.  相似文献

Information on foot and leg traits was collected on 8494 young potential future AI bulls of the three populations Danish Red, Danish Friesian and Danish Jersey by two classifiers between 1985 and 1996. Each animal was assessed at 5 and 10 months of age. The data set was used to examine the influence of age and classifier on genetic parameters of foot and leg traits by treating traits recorded at two different times or by two different people as a different characteristic in a bivariate analysis. The general incidence of foot and leg diseases was very low in young animals: only interdigital dermatitis, heel necrosis and solar bruising showed a frequency higher than 2% in 10-month-old bulls. The same traits measured on different claws yielded very high genetic correlations (rg 0.77-0.98), suggesting that the number of measurements could be reduced. Hooves increased in size with age, and the genetic correlation between the two age classes was high (rg 0.60-0.77). The agreement between classifiers was very high for objectively measured traits, especially for the younger age class, and interdigital dermatitis and heel necrosis, but inconclusive for the subjectively scored characteristics.  相似文献

The influence of age on the myelogram and on the different indices (ratios) was studied on bone marrow aspirates of 131 healthy dogs which were divided into different age groups (A [4-6 months] to G [> 8 years]). Myelograms were obtained by performing a differential count on 1000 cells. Age dependent differences were particularly seen in the 4 to 6 month old dogs. These dogs had significantly higher percentages of immature erythroid cells (p < 0.01) than dogs of the other age groups and, consequently, the lowest proportion of myeloid cells. This fact was also reflected by a lower quotient of number of myeloid cells/number of erythroid cells (M:E-ratio) and increased erythroid maturation index (I:ME-ratio). In addition, the proportions of monocytes and lymphocytes were increased and the number of plasma cells was decreased in juvenile dogs. The results in young dogs which were different from the values of adult animals reflect the increased requirements of red cell mass during the time of growth and ontogenesis of the immune system. These findings have to be considered in the interpretation of bone marrow films of young dogs.  相似文献

The degree of maxillary molar tooth-row eruption and wear were used to assign samples of the social giant mole-rat, Fukomys mechowii, from Zambia, into nine relative age classes in order to assess ontogenetic (age) variation and craniometric sexual dimorphism, with reference to body mass. Univariate and multivariate statistical analyses showed craniometric differences between age classes 1–3 and age classes 5–9, with age class 4 being intermediate between these two age class groupings. This suggests that age class 4 lies at a point on a hypothetical growth curve where growth begins to stabilize. The intermediate placement of age class 4 in multivariate space broadly coincided with body mass categorizations into juveniles (age classes 1–3; <100 g), subadults (age class 4; c. 100–150 g), and adults (age classes 5–9; >150 g). The analyses also revealed the absence of sexual dimorphism in the relatively younger age classes 1–4 but its presence in the relatively older age classes 5–9, and these results are supported by data on body mass. These results may have implications in our understanding of the population and social structures, and reproductive strategies in this little-studied giant mole-rat.  相似文献

Cryptosporidium parvum is a protozoan parasite causing diarrhoea in young calves. This cross-sectional study was performed to estimate the prevalence of Cryptosporidium infected herds in a sample of Swedish dairy herds and to identify potential risk factors associated with shedding of oocysts. Fifty dairy herds, selected by stratified random sampling, were included. The herds were visited once during the indoor seasons of 2005–2006 and 2006–2007. Faecal samples were collected from 10 calves, 10 young stock and 5 cows in each herd. Clinical observations of sampled animals and environmental status were recorded, and farmers were interviewed about management procedures. Faecal samples were cleaned by sodium chloride flotation and detection of oocysts was made by epifluorescence microscopy. Cryptosporidium parvum-like oocysts were found in 96% of the herds. Prevalence was 52% in calves, 29% in young stock and 5.6% in cows. Three two-day-old calves shed oocysts. Cryptosporidium andersoni was found in seven animals from four different herds. Factors associated with prevalence of shedders among sampled animals in a herd were age at weaning, cleaning of single calf pens, placing of young stock, system for moving young stock, and year of sampling. Factors associated with shedding in calves were age, placing of young stock, routines for moving young stock and time calf stays with the cow. The only significant factor in young stock was age. In cows, number of calves in the herd and type of farming (organic vs. conventional) affected shedding.  相似文献

This study aimed to compare feed efficiency measures of Nellore beef cattle on different residual intake and gain (RIG) classes. We used data from 610 animals weighing on average 236.33 kg and average of 283 days of age from feedlot performance tests carried out between 2005 and 2012. Animals were grouped based on RIG into three different classes: high RIG (>?mean?+?0.5 standard deviation (SD), most efficient; n?=?193), medium RIG (mean?±?0.5 SD; n?=?235), and low RIG (<?mean – 0.5 SD, least efficient; n?=?182). Residual feed intake (RFI), residual gain (RG), feed conversion ratio (FCR), feed efficiency (FE), relative growth rate (RGR), and Kleiber ratio (KR) of animals in each RIG class were compared by Tukey test at 1% of probability. Phenotypic correlations between variables were evaluated as well. Animals on high RIG class showed lower dry matter intake (P?<?0.01) and higher average daily gain (P?<?0.01) than low RIG animals. Consequently, high RIG animals had lower FCR (P?<?0.01) and higher FE (P?<?0.01) than those animals in low RIG class. The most efficient animals based on RIG were also the most efficient animals based on RG and RFI. RIG was negatively correlated to dry matter intake (P?<?0.01) and FCR (P?<?0.01), and a positive correlation was found between RIG and FE (P?<?0.01). Therefore, RIG appears to be a good parameter to select animals with reduced dry matter intake and high productive performance.

The prevalence and numbers of coccidian oocysts in faecal samples from young (less than 6 months old), immature (6–12 months old) and adult (over 12 months old) sheep on 15 farms in Nyandarua district were studied during the dry and wet seasons. The species ofEimeria occuring in these sheep were also identified. The proportion of animals shedding coccidian oocysts did not vary significantly with season. The prevalence of the oocysts was significantly higher (p<0.05) in young sheep (mean 85.3%) compared to immature (mean 40.2%) and adult sheep (mean 32.15%). OPG counts (oocysts per gram of faeces) were significantly higher (p<0.01) in the young sheep compared to immature and adult sheep during both seasons. Prevalence and OPG did not differ between immature and adult sheep. There was no significant difference in OPG during the wet season (mean 328±997) compared to the dry season (mean 219±773). The sex of the sheep had no significant effect on prevalence or OPG. Eight species ofEimeria were recognized. Known-age teeth were used to validate age determination techniques for the Cape fur seal (Arctocephalus pusillus pusillus). Thin sectioning and staining of decalcified teeth produced the poorest age estimates. For etched half canines, only upper canines could be used to estimate age with good results, and coating improved the accuracy. Scanning electron microscopy produced poor accuracy in age estimation. External ridges reflected age accurately only in younger age classes and should only be used to verify counts of internal growth layer groups, or when rapid, preliminary estimates of age are necessary. This study has highlighted the importance of comparing different age determination techniques and validating such techniques with known-age animals. The reliability with which age can be estimated for the Cape fur seal has also been improved.  相似文献

Enzyme-linked immunosorbent assays (ELISAs) are routinely used for cattle herd diagnosis of Salmonella Dublin infection in many countries. It is also possible to use such tests for individual diagnosis. Passively transferred immunoglobulins may cause false-positive test results in young calves. Also, false-positive test results may be seen in recovered animals several months after infection. False-negative results are seen in acutely infected animals, especially immature animals that are unable to produce a humoral antibody response to infection. To be able to interpret the individual animal test results, it is necessary to take age into account when validating the ELISA. In the present study an age-stratified validation of an indirect Salmonella Dublin serum ELISA as predictor of bacterial excretion was performed using receiver-operating characteristic (ROC) analysis. Three age groups were formed according to the results of an exploratory analysis of the age effect on area under curve (AUC) of ROC curves. The AUC for the youngest age group (0-99 days) was 0.816 (SE = 0.033), which was significantly (z = 4.23, P < 0.0001) smaller than the 0.977 (SE = 0.019) estimated for the next age group (100-300 days). The oldest age group (> 300 days) had an AUC of 0.905 (SE = 0.023), which was significantly different from the AUC of both the other age groups (z = 2.21, P = 0.027 when compared with the youngest age groups and z = 2.41, P = 0.016 when compared with the age group of 100-300 days). The results showed that the indirect Salmonella Dublin serum ELISA is most valid for detection of infection in individual cattle from the age of 100 days. Purpose-related test sensitivities and specificities were evaluated at different cutoff values.  相似文献

We have investigated, under the normal conditions of local Chinese pig farming, castration of young male pigs by vaccination with a newly developed vaccine against gonadotrophin releasing hormone (GnRH). Because of the very early onset of puberty, long fattening period and relatively harsh circumstances in Chinese pig production, an investigation of the endocrine response of Chinese breeds to this type of vaccination was of particular interest. Fifteen crossbred boars (Yorkshire × Yanan) from three different litters were randomly assigned to three groups of five animals each. The first group was immunized at 13 weeks of age with a GnRH tandem dimer OVA‐conjugate in Specol and received a booster immunization 8 weeks later. The second group was injected with Specol alone and served as untreated controls. The remaining group was surgically castrated at the time of weaning (at 6 weeks of age). Pigs were fed ad libitum from weaning onwards. All animals were slaughtered at 31 weeks of age. Immunized boars had undetectable or low serum testosterone (0.09 ± 0.12 ng/ml), low fat androstenone (0.05 ± 0.01 μg/g) levels and very low testes weights (19.1 ± 4.3 g). Intact controls had much higher serum levels of testosterone (9.76 ± 4.81 ng/ml), fat androstenone levels (2.26 ± 0.87 μg/g) and testes weights (114.3 ± 29.41 g) at slaughter. Both the immunized and castrated group grew significantly faster than intact boars (p < 0.01). Average daily gains in immunized, castrated and intact animals were 0.69 ± 0.08, 0.63 ± 0.05 and 0.42 ± 0.07 kg (mean ± SD), respectively. The present data demonstrate for the first time that the newly developed anti‐GnRH vaccine works very well under practical Chinese pig farming conditions, and can be an attractive alternative to surgical castration.  相似文献

The decline in metabolism correlates better with mass than age, while conductance correlates better with age than mass. After 77 days of age the relative importance of dry thermal conductance increased and this is attributed to the testes becoming scrotal, and acting as a thermal window. The final desertion of the nest by young is suggested to coincide with the advent of an efficient thermoregulatory capacity.  相似文献

The responses were monitored of young crossbred calves vaccinated against tropical theileriosis during the winter against a field tick challenge in the disease season. Thirty-eight calves below 2 months of age, born after the end of the disease season, were selected at an organized farm. Twenty-five animals were vaccinated with Theileria annulata (Hisar) cell culture vaccine (developed at CCS HAU Hisar laboratory) after the end of the disease season and 13 calves were kept as non-vaccinated controls. These calves were observed for their susceptibility to theileriosis in the new disease season. There was an increase in antibody titre in 18 of the 25 vaccinated animals one month after vaccination. The antibody titre then declined gradually, but remained higher than those of the non-vaccinated animals at month 0. No fever or other clinical signs of tropical theileriosis were observed in any of the vaccinated animals. Nine out of 25 (36%) vaccinated calves showed occasional piroplasms (<;0.5%) in blood smears. All the vaccinated animals withstood the field tick challenge. On the other hand, 9 of the 13 (69%) unvaccinated calves exhibited occasional piroplasms, and included three clinical cases of tropical theileriosis. These observations suggest that young crossbred calves vaccinated with the T. annulata (Hisar) cell culture vaccine at the end of the disease season were relatively resistant during the next disease season.  相似文献

Genetic parameters for wool traits for Columbia, Polypay, Rambouillet, and Targhee breeds of sheep were estimated with single- and multiple-trait analyses using REML with animal models. Traits considered were fleece grade, fleece weight, and staple length. Total number of observations ranged from 11,673 to 34,746 for fleece grade and fleece weight and from 3,500 to 11,641 for staple length for the four breeds. For single-trait analyses, data were divided by age of ewe: young ages (age of 1 yr), middle ages (ages of 2 and 3 yr), and older ages (age greater than 3 yr). Heritability estimates averaged over breeds for fleece grade decreased from .42 at a young age to .37 for older ages. For fleece weight, heritability estimates averaged .52, .57, and .55 within the successively older groups. Heritability estimates for staple length averaged .54 for young and middle age classes. Few older ewes had staple length measurements. After single-trait analyses, new data sets were created for three-trait analyses with traits defined by three age classes when animals were measured. Heritability estimates with three-trait analyses, except for a few cases, were somewhat greater than those from single-trait analyses. For fleece grade, the genetic correlations averaged over breeds were .72 for young with middle, .42 for young with older, and .86 for middle with older age classes. For fleece weight, the average genetic correlations were .81, .83, and .98. For staple length, the average genetic correlation for young with middle age classes was .82. Estimates of genetic correlations across ages varied considerably among breeds. The average estimates of correlations suggest that fleece grade may need to be defined by age, especially for the Columbia and Rambouillet breeds. For fleece weight and staple length, however, the average correlations suggest no need to define those traits by age.  相似文献

A cross-sectional survey was performed to obtain first information on the presence of Neospora caninum infection in Bos javanicus (‘Bali cattle’), the predominant beef cattle in the Eastern Islands of Indonesia. Serum samples were collected from 438 Bali cattle of two age classes (<2 years, >2 years) and both genders at three slaughterhouses in the Bali island, and examined for N. caninum-specific antibodies using native NcSRS2 (p38 antigen) as an ELISA antigen. The estimated overall seroprevalence of antibodies was 5.5% (95% CI: 3.5–8.0%). The seroprevalence was not significantly associated with age class or gender of the animals. The results give first serological evidence for the presence of natural N. caninum infection in Bos javanicus and indicate its occurrence in Indonesia.  相似文献

The validity of predicting the age of Rhabdomys pumilio by age-related changes in tooth appearance, dimensions and position, in body mass and head-body length is tested against 47 known-age mice. Body mass can be used to determine the age of individuals of less than 7 weeks old (≤ 26 g). Thereafter, the only reliable technique of age determination Involves a visual evaluation of the degree of molar tooth wear. Five wear classes are described and used to assess the age of 780 R. pumilio collected during a five-year period. The annual cycles of population age structure and size were dependent on seasonal recruitment and were Influenced by the duration of the peak breeding period. The growth rate, especially of females, is reduced in winter, and maturity appears to be delayed until spring, when breeding commences.  相似文献

Six live-trap types were tested in a grassy vlei near Pretoria in an attempt to determine their success in trapping Rhabdomys pumilio, Praomys (Mastomys) natalensis, and Otomys irroratus. One trap of each type was set at each of fourteen trapping stations. The effect of trap position on captures was effectively ruled out by changing the arrangement of the traps each week. 49 anoestrous ewes (German Blackface) were treated with 0,1 mg oestradiolvalerianate (OT) during 3 successive days. Intensive follicular development could be observed 24–48 brs. later and 6.5, % of the animals ovulated. HCG (500–700 IU) did not improve the effect on ovulations. Better results were obtained near the end of the anoestrous season. In spite of distinct heat symptoms sexual behaviour was not intact, most of the treated ewes refused the ram. From 84 anoestrous ewes treated by the same method during April, May und July ca. 80 % accepted the ram, 40 % lambed, 20 % conceived during the first heat, 10 % during the second oestrous, 10 % 4–9 weeks after treatment. Only 20 % of the 48 control animals lambed. In maiden-ewes, 6–7 months of age, ovulations without heat could be stimulated by psychological factors (mounting by rams, driving, transport etc.) within 24 hrs. During August 66 % of the immature animals ovulated after treatment with 3 × 0,05 mg OV, but refused the ram. During October all immature animals ovulated following a single injection of 0,05 mg OV and all were mated. The fertilization rate of the eggs was low.  相似文献

The soluble collagen from mink skin was extracted from 2-week to 6-month-old animals. A total of 14 different age groups, each containing three animals, was studied by using two different buffers for collagen extraction. The amount of soluble collagen was measured. The various collagen species were characterized using capillary zone electrophoresis, sodium dodecyl sulfate-polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis and protein blotting followed by antibody analysis for type I collagen. The data showed that the amount of soluble collagen declines with age. Using capillary electrophoresis it was also found that the distribution of soluble collagen differs in very young kits' skin compared with older animals' skin, whereas the skin from animals more than 2 weeks old was found to contain the same proportions of various collagen species. Antibody analysis of type I collagen found no difference in the relative amount between different age groups, and only the acetic acid-containing buffer extracted type I collagen from the mink skin.  相似文献

Faecal samples were obtained from sheep and goats before, during and after the rainy season at three locations in south-west Mauritania. Several animals were also necropsied at the same time.Haemonchus contortus was the most prevalent worm. Infection by digestive-tract strongyles andStrongyloides papillosus was always very light (prevalence less than 20%). Sheep were more heavily infected than goats but animals under 1 year of age were not infected by digestive-tract strongyles. It is likely that young small ruminants became infected during the rainy season and that the parasites so acquired are inhibited in their development and/or survive nearly one year as adults.  相似文献
