Abstract

The economic importance of vaginal prolapse in ewes depends not only on the incidence, which has been shown to vary from farm to farm, district to district, year to year (Edgar, 1952 Edgar, D. G. 1952. Vet. Rec., 64: 852852.  [Google Scholar]; McLean, 1957 McLean, J. W. 1957. N.Z. vet. J., 5: 9393. [Taylor &; Francis Online] [Google Scholar]), and according to topography (McLean, 1957 McLean, J. W. 1957. N.Z. vet. J., 5: 9393. [Taylor &; Francis Online] [Google Scholar]), but also upon the outcome of the disease in losses of ewes and Iambs. It must be appreciated that, although it is becoming more common than hitherto for veterinary assistance to besought, by custom and tradition the great majority of cases are still treated by the farmer himself or his shepherd. The kind of treatment that cases thus receive and the conditions under which treatment is given can perhaps best be described as “rough and ready”. The mortality rates in ewes and lambs to be described in this paper are those associated with this kind of treatment.  相似文献

Two cases of uterine prolapse in dromedary camels in a herd with concomitant cases of white muscle disease are described. Serum selenium and glutathione peroxidase in whole blood were investigated in both patients and showed statistical difference compared with a control group. Results suggest that selenium deficiency could promote uterine prolapse in dromedary camels.  相似文献

Serum calcium, magnesium and phosphate values of ewes recently affected by vaginal prolapse were compared with unaffected ewes in four flocks. Subclinical hypocalcaemia was demonstrated in some affected and unaffected ewes in three flocks. Magnesium and phosphate values were normal. In two flocks the body condition of ewes recently affected by vaginal prolapse was variable and reflected the variation in condition found in the flock. In a third flock affected ewes had significantly lower body condition scores than unaffected ewes (P less than 0.001). Analysis of the fourth flock was not possible. Oestrogenic mycotoxins were not detected in any of the feed samples taken from these flocks. The following year the management, nutrition and energy, and the protein and calcium status of ewes in 12 flocks of greyface/mule ewes with a history of a regular high (greater than 3 per cent) or low (less than 1 per cent) prevalence of vaginal prolapse were compared. A high prevalence was not associated with any particular feedstuff. A high or intermediate (1 to 3 per cent) prevalence of vaginal prolapse was found in three of the four flocks managed as a single group and these three flocks were fed on an unrestricted basis. Body condition scoring and beta-hydroxybutyrate estimation confirmed that ewes in these flocks were overfed. The prevalence of vaginal prolapse in the flocks was not related to the serum albumin, calcium or urea of the ewes. Therefore subclinical hypocalcaemia was probably a consequence of vaginal prolapse rather than a cause.  相似文献

A case of uterine prolapse coexisting with uterine horn rupture in a 3-year-old Portuguese Podengo bitch, which is an uncommon occurrence, is described. The female was presented with a history of recent parturition, with delivery of four healthy puppies that were normally tended and nursed. The situation developed after an uneventfully pregnancy, and no direct causative factor was identified. The duration of the prolapse was unknown, but considered to be recent because of the swollen reddish appearance of the tubular everted mass. No foetus was found in the uterus or the abdominal cavity. The female was presented in good physical condition, without signs of shock or haemorrhage. During surgical treatment, the uterus was replaced to its normal position followed by ovary-hysterectomy at 12 h from admittance.  相似文献

In a previous paper, changes in the pelvic region of normal pregnant ewes were described (Bassett and Phillips, 1955 Bassett, E. G. and Phillips, D. S. M. 1955. N.Z. vet. J., 3: 2020. [Taylor &; Francis Online] [Google Scholar]). The dissection techniques developed have now been used to study characteristic changes in pelvic anatomy of a large number of ewes suffering from, or with previous histories of, vaginal prolapse (“bearing trouble”). Dissected pelves have again been observed, and some of the more informative techniques applied to live animals. In addition to these quantitative methods, preliminary investigations have been initiated using a deep-freeze technique to study pelvic anatomy in greater detail.  相似文献

The hypothesis that subnormal luteal function after induced ovulation in anestrous ewes was the result of uterine influences exerted during the periovulatory period was tested. Crossbred ewes (n = 27) in seasonal anestrus were induced to ovulate by administration of 12 doses of 250 ng of LHRH at 2-h intervals, followed immediately by a bolus injection of LHRH (250 micrograms; d 0). Ewes were unilaterally hysterectomized on either d -3 (PRELHRH) or 2 (POSTLHRH). Daily blood samples were collected and assayed for progesterone (P4) and 13,14-dihydro-15-keto-prostaglandin F2 alpha (PGFM). All ewes were slaughtered on d 10, and corpora lutea (CL) were collected, weighed, and assayed for concentration of P4. All ewes that ovulated exclusively in the ovary ipsilateral to the remaining uterine horn had a transient increase in plasma P4 of 2 to 3 d (short luteal phase). In ewes with at least one CL in the isolated ovary, elevated plasma P4 was maintained after hysterectomy but was consistently lower (P less than .05) in POSTLHRH ewes than in PRELHRH ewes. Concentrations of PGFM did not differ between treatments. The CL ipsilateral to the remaining uterine horn weighted less (P less than .01) and contained less P4 (P less than .01) than contralateral CL. These data confirm the hypothesis that premature regression of subnormal CL is uterine-dependent in a local fashion. Presence of the uterus during the follicular and(or) early luteal phase inhibited subsequent luteal function in seasonally anestrous ewes.  相似文献

The incidence of dystocia from ewes in nine lambing periods (1992-2000) was recorded at an obstetrical clinic. First we analysed parturition difficulties in normal pregnant sheep (group 1, n = 229). In the second group parturitions of ewes with vaginal prolapse ante partum were investigated (n = 129). In group 1 maternal causes of dystocia occurred more often than fetal ones (50% maternal, 45% fetal). In maternal parturition difficulties ringwomb was the dominating reason (64%), while abnormal presentations, position and/or posture of the lambs occurred most frequently in fetal dystocia (67%). But there was no statistical influence of age and number of parturitions in both groups. The average of the first notice of prolapsed vaginal tissue was 11 days before lambing. There was a predominance in the affection of sheep at first and second pregnancy (52%). Only 26% of the group 2 sheep had a spontaneous delivery. In 58% of the cases a dystocia was diagnosed. A preterm caesarean section had carried out in 12%, five ewes died before parturition because of septicemia (4%). Sheep suffering from vaginal prolapse ante partum showed maternal caused dystocia significant more frequently than members of group 1 (p < 0.001), with ringwomb as dominating reason (70%). The number of born lambs was significant higher in group 2 than in group 1 (p = 0.019).  相似文献

This Case Report describes severe complications associated with uterine prolapse in a mare. A 6‐year‐old Trakehner mare was examined for depression, moderate pain and vaginal discharge 3 days after correction of a uterine prolapse. The clinical examination and haematology revealed that the mare had an infection with systemic inflammatory response syndrome and shock. Due to the uncontrollable, persistent pain, an exploratory celiotomy was performed which revealed severe metritis. During anaesthesia, the mare developed severe cardiovascular compromise and died in recovery. In previously reported cases of uterine prolapse in the mare, the authors warn of uterine injury, broad ligament haemorrhage, metritis, endotoxaemia and laminitis but often have a successful outcome with conventional therapy. This case describes a mare that developed severe complications and death after uterine prolapse. Mares with uterine prolapse require appropriate treatment and vigilant monitoring post treatment to prevent life threatening complications.  相似文献

To determine if a transient increase in uterine blood flow (BF) and estradiol-17 beta (E2 beta) secretion occurs during maternal recognition of pregnancy in ewes (as previously observed for sows and cows), 40 nonpregnant (NP) ewes were assigned in equal numbers to surgery on d 9, 11, 13 or 15 postestrus (d 0 = day of estrus). For 20 NP ewes (five/day), each uterine horn (UH) was flushed with saline and uterine flushings (UF) collected. For the remaining 20 ewes, BF was determined for each UH using electromagnetic transducers, and samples of uterine arterial (UA) and uterine venous (UV) blood were obtained from each UH. After an intervening cycle, each ewe was mated, subjected to surgery on the same day postmating as during her previous nonmated cycle, and BF measurements and UA and UV samples were obtained. In addition, each UH of pregnant (P) ewes was flushed and the location of conceptuses was determined. Concentrations of E2 beta and progesterone (P4) in UA and E2 beta in UV and UF were determined by radioimmunoassay. For NP ewes, BF (ml/min) was not different for UH ipsilateral or contralateral to the ovary bearing the corpus luteum (CL), and did not differ across days, averaging 6.5 +/- .4. For P ewes, BF to UH contralateral to the ovary bearing the CL on all days and BF to UH ipsilateral to ovaries bearing CL on d 9 was similar to BF of either UH of NP ewes, averaging 6.8 +/- .6. On d 11, 13 and 15 of pregnancy, BF to UH ipsilateral to the ovary bearing CL was elevated (P less than .01) twofold (13.3 +/- .9).(ABSTRACT TRUNCATED AT 250 WORDS)  相似文献
