Chas Gates died suddenly in Auckland on April 4 this year at the age of 54. He had been battling with indifferent health for some years, but concealed his illness so effectively with his unfailing pleasant personality that his death was a shock and a great sadness to all his colleagues.     

Obituary: Michael Hugh Blunt

All members of the New Zealand Veterinary Association would have been saddened by the sudden death of Michael Blunt at his home on Sunday, 26th June, in his 64th year.     

John Lawrence Jebson

The tragic death at the age of 31 years of John Jebson, on 3 November, at the home of his father in Sheffield, Canterbury, was a shock to his veterinary colleagues throughout the Dominion. John had been in ill health for a few weeks prior to his death.     

Thomas Henry Hankin,B.V.Sc., M.R.C.V.S.

Tommy Hankin was born in 1888. He graduated from the Melbourne Veterinary School in 1914. He soon joined the A.I.F. and served in the war as Veterinary Officer in Egypt and in France. After the war he went to Edinburgh and obtained his M.R.C.V.S. and then returned to New Zealand and set up practice in Pukekohe. In 1927 he joined the Department of Agriculture as a Veterinarian and was stationed successively in Wanganui, Masterton and Whangarei before his appointment as Livestock Superintendent, Auckland, where he stayed until his retirement in 1953. After he retired he moved to Pukekohe and was kept busy with land and livestock until his sudden death on November 1, 1971.     

Wm C. Barry,M.R.C.V.S.

The death occurred in Wellington on August 19, 1971, of William C. Barry, a respected member of the veterinary profession. Mr Barry, who was in his 87th year, was born in County Cork and graduated from the Dublin Veterinary College in 1907 with distinction in a number of subjects. He became a Member of the Royal College of Veterinary Surgeons from that date, his membership thus encompassing a period of 64 years.

It is with deep regret that we learn of the death at Palmerston North, in his eighty-first year, of William Maurice Webster. ‘Wally’ as he was affectionately known, really had no desire to enter the veterinary profession, but his father (himself a veterinarian and farmer from Wiltshire County in England) was a man of firm views concerning the career his son should follow. It was thus that in 1922, after 4 years study at the Royal Dick Veterinary College and Edinburgh University, the young Webster completed concurrently the necessary qualifications for both Membership of the Royal College of Veterinary Surgeons and the Bachelor of Science degree, the latter with a major in medical physiology.     

Effect of the change of social environment on the behavior of a captive brown bear (Ursus arctos)

We observed the behavior of a captive sterilized male brown bear before and after the death of his female sibling to investigate the effect of the change of social environment on his behavior and welfare. Observations were carried out by continuous recording during daylight for 6 wk prior to hibernation when the bear was kept with the sibling, and they were repeated 2 years later when the bear was alone (total observation time is 108 h). Feeding, moving, and the total amount of time spent resting (including sleeping and alert inactive) were not affected by the change of social environment. However, when the bear was alone, the percentage of time he spent alert inactive almost trebled (pair, 17.7 ± 3.3%; alone, 48.5 ± 5.5%; P < 0.001), and the time spent sleeping was less than one-third (pair, 51.1 ± 6.1%; alone, 14.2 ± 5.0%; P < 0.001) than when the female was present. The bear spent most of his sleeping time in lateral lying posture (a posture probably associated with rapid eyes movement sleep). The percentage of time dedicated to this posture was significantly reduced after the death of his sibling (pair, 35.9 ± 7.4%; alone, 15.0 ± 5.4%; P < 0.05), whereas the percentage of time spent in quadrupedal posture increased (pair, 17.1 ± 5.4%; alone, 37.8 ± 7.8; P < 0.05). One of the possible reasons for these changes may be an increased risk perception of the bear after the death of his sibling. Our results highlight the importance of social environment and of its changes, which should be carefully considered to maintain captive bears in good welfare conditions.     

Obituary — John Ewing Dixon Abbott

Members of the profession will be sad to learn of the death of Jack Abbott. Few veterinarians may have known Jack as he had not been practicing for many years. He was, though, well known to those in practice in the north during the early sixties. His passing will be mourned by those he knew. The incredible way Jack and his family faced his passing is an outstanding example of courage and an inspiration to us all. It is a story I am honoured, yet humbled, to relate.

The many friends of Peter Flodin were shocked to hear of his sudden death ad the age of forty just two days before Christmas, 1957. He died after only a few minutes' illness whilst on a farm in the Hutt Valley.     

David Stewart Christopher

It is with considerable regret that we record the death, as result of a car accident, of David Stewart Christopher, aged 35, on 11^th December, 1985. David was born in Te Awamutu and attended the local Kihikihi Primary School and Te Awamutu College. David was a skilled sportsman, being a member of the 1^st XV and 1^st XI at College. David left school without completing his University Entrance and worked on his father's farm for a year before completing the exam by correspondence. David then gained his veterinary degree at Massey University, completing this in 1974.     

Perforated gastric ulcer v associated with pyloroplasty for chronic hypertrophic pyloric gastropathy in a dog

A six-year-old male silkie terrier presented with a history of chronic vomiting. A diagnosis of gastric outflow obstruction was made using contrast radiography of the upper gastrointestinal tract. Surgical examination of the stomach revealed thickened pyloric antral mucosa. A Heineke-Mikulicz pyloroplasty combined with resection of the hypertrophic pyloric mucosa were performed to increase the patency of the pyloric lumen. The dog recovered well from surgery and his condition remained stable until the sixth day postoperatively when his condition deteriorated rapidly resulting in his death that night. At autopsy a perforated gastric ulcer was found in the cardiac region of the pylorus with evidence for a generalised peritonitis. An association between gastric outflow obstruction and gastric ulceration has been reported in human clinical literature and in canine experimental models. No such association has been previously documented in the veterinary clinical literature.

News of Mr Meldal-Johnsen's death in a road accident was received from South Africa recently. Johnny, as he was popularly called, was widely known and respected within the profession and by a large circle of friends in the farming community. He had been Veterinarian, Animal Health Division of the Department of Agriculture, Hamilton, for seven years before deciding to return to his native South Africa last year. Having made the move and having surmounted the re-settling period very successfully, it is particularly tragic that he was not given the opportunity to utilize further his wide experience in the veterinary field. His cheerful disposition and infectious enthusiasm endeared him to all and his capacity for work was never bounded by office hours. His particular interests included parasite control, animal transport and certification of animals for export, and he was active in the early stages of the tuberculosis and brucellosis control schemes in the Waikato. To his wife, and three children, we offer our deepest sympathy in the loss of a devoted husband and father.     

Reducing the suicide rate among veterinary surgeons: how the profession can help

A short communication on page 415 of this issue of The Veterinary Record draws attention to the high suicide rate among members of the veterinary profession. In this article, Professor Richard Halliwell, who has recently chaired a series of meetings on this matter at the Royal College of Veterinary Surgeons, and Mr Brian Hoskin, chairman of the Veterinary Benevolent Fund, describe some of the support mechanisms available to veterinary surgeons and discuss what more might be done.     

Mr. H. S. S. Kyle

It is with deep regret that we have to record the death of Mr. Kyle, of Christchruch, who was a widely known and respected member of pur profession. He was born in Melbourne in 1873 and spent the early part of his life in the Riverina district of new South Wales. He graduated as a veterinary surgeon in Melbourne in 1895 and practised in Ballarat until 1901, when he came to New Zealand. He was in government service until 11918 and, after one year in the army, commenced private practice in Christchurch in 1919. He gave up practice on his election to Parliament but resumed on his retirement from office, Mr. Kyle first entered the field of public affairs in local body service and became Mayor of the Borough of Riccarton in 1925, a post which, except for the years 1927 to 1929, he claimed as a record for New Zealand, being 28 years.     

Gastric dilatation-volvulus as complication after surgical removal of a splenic haemangiosarcoma in a dog

An 8-year-old crossbreed dog presented after one episode of acute collapse due to rupture of a splenic haemangiosarcoma. Following splenectomy the dog recovered well. Two days after discharge the dog re-presented because of gastric dilatation-volvulus (GDV) that eventually led to his death. Splenectomy to remove a voluminous splenic tumour may predispose to GDV and dogs may benefit from concurrent prophylactic gastropexy.

在小说作品中耳熟能详的潘美是十恶不赦的奸臣佞子，其劣迹斑斑的罪行昭然若揭，而出现在史书中的潘美却是英勇果敢、仁慈宽容的宋王朝的开国功臣。笔者试图从以下两个方面归纳造成其善恶差异如此明显的原因：一、人物形象演变的根本原因源于让杨业命丧异域的陈家谷之战，作为主帅的潘美行事风格有别于平素，关于他复杂心理轨迹的记载不够详细，疑窦丛生。二、小说和史书两种文体形式对人物真实性要求的程度有所不同，建构原则的差异决定人物形象的变异。

Familial ichthyosiform keratoderma in newly out-of-pouch Bennett's wallabies (Macropus rufogriseus) and report of two cases

Primary inherited disorders of cornification in veterinary medicine are uncommon and rarely reported. Herein described is a unique syndrome associated with keratoderma that occurred in two Bennett's wallaby siblings (Macropus rufogriseus), and was characterized by profound thickening of the pad skin of all feet, generalized scaling of haired skin, and death within 7 weeks of out-of-pouch experience. The male also had depressed serum zinc levels. In addition, the male had, on electron microscopic exam of his skin, the presence of abnormal lipid deposits within the stratum corneum and stratum granulosum. The combination of clinical features and electron microscopic findings strongly suggests a syndrome analogous to harlequin ichthyosis or lamellar ichthyosis in humans.     

Diarrhea: the nemesis of the artificially reared, early weaned piglet and a strategy for defense

Rearing early weaned piglets artificially for the purpose of increasing the efficiency of the sow is an attractive management concept. However, high death losses resulting from diarrhea in artificially reared piglets have dampered enthusiasm for early weaning. Enterotoxigenic Escherichia coli, transmissible gastroenteritis virus and rotavirus are the three main enteropathogens responsible for causing the diarrhea. The enteropathogens infect the small intestine, which produces a secretory or malabsorptive diarrhea. In nature, the nursing piglet is protected from the enteropathogens by antibody bathing his gut. The source of the antibody is the dam's colostrum and milk. It should be possible to protect artificially reared, early weaned piglets from enteropathogens by feeding them diets that contain antibodies to putative enteropathogens.
