The effects of graded levels of phytic acid on skeletal development and mineral deposition were investigated in an 80 day feeding trial with Atlantic salmon (Salmo salar L.) parr. The level of phytic acid had no significant effect on the phosphorus (P) content of either whole body or vertebral column of Atlantic salmon. Negative effects of high phytic acid levels were, however, found on whole body concentration of calcium (Ca), magnesium (Mg), and in the Ca:P ratio, and in the vertebral column concentration of zinc (Zn). A novel type of vertebral pathology was observed, hyper dense (HD) vertebrae. The HD vertebrae appeared denser on radiographic images, and they consisted of a denser trabecular network than the surrounding vertebrae. The number of fish with HD vertebrae increased from initially 16% to 45-60%, with a tendency of more fish with HD vertebrae with increasing dietary phytic acid content. The HD vertebrae are described and illustrated with radiographic images, whole mount staining, and histology.  相似文献

A radiographic study was carried out on 2-year groups of pre-smolt parr to detect the comparative frequency of vertebral change in a range of defined pedigreed families of high growth rate of Atlantic salmon, Salmo salar L., reared under identical conditions. The observed frequency of deformity was related to the observed deformity level in the seawater parental generation, and to a potentially uncontrolled environmental determinant, i.e. stripping date. High and low parental deformity groups of families were found to produce offspring that had very similar levels of radiographically detectable spinal deformities in the pre-smolt parr, suggesting no genetic link. With regard to stripping date, the overall incidence was nearly half that seen in the preceding year (8.7% cf 16.6%). However, a non-significant trend to fewer radiographic spinal deformities was seen in the later stripping period.  相似文献

Pathological changes in the vertebral column of farmed Atlantic salmon in Norway have been reported since the 1990s. Based on the characteristic radiographic findings, we here present a vertebral column deformity named “curved cross-stitch vertebrae” that mainly affects the middle aspect of the vertebral column. Sixty fish, from the west/northwest coast of mid-Norway, were sampled at slaughter and examined by radiography, computed tomography (CT), necropsy, macrophotography, and histology. The vertebral deformities were radiographically graded as mild, moderate, or marked. The main differences between these grades of changes were defined by increased curving of the peripheries of endplates, reduced intervertebral spaces, and vertical displacement of the vertebrae. The curved rims of endplates were located peripheral to a continuous and approximately circular borderline. The CT studies revealed small, multifocal, hypo-attenuating, round to crescent-shaped areas in the notochord, compatible with the presence of gas. Additionally, histology revealed that the axial parts of endplates had circular zones with perforations, through which either notochordal tissue prolapsed into the vertebrae or vascularized fibrochondroid proliferations extended from the vertebrae into the notochord. Inflammation was present in many vertebral bodies. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first report of gas in the notochord of fish.  相似文献

This study investigated the development of skeletal deformities in individually tagged Atlantic salmon (n = 805) from the parr stage (Sept 2001, 70 g mean ± 34 g S.D.) until 10 month after transfer to seawater (Feb 2003, 3040 g mean ± 1097 g S.D.). A subgroup of the total population (n = 129) was radiographed as parr (Feb 2002) and again 10 months after transfer to seawater (Feb 2003). Eight percent of the males matured sexually during their first autumn in sea (jack), and were excluded from further analysis. Based on an external examination of each fish (n = 773), 1.8% (n = 14) developed skeletal deformities (0.1% operculum deformities (n = 1), 0.4% jaw deformities (n = 3), 1.3% vertebral deformities (n = 10)) during the experiment. Based on evaluation of radiographs (n = 129), the prevalence of vertebral deformities was 7.0% (n = 9) at the parr stage, and 12.4% (n = 16) 10 months after transfer to seawater. From radiographs, longitudinally compressed vertebral bodies without intervertebral spaces were classified as ankylosis and compression, longitudinally compressed vertebral bodies with intervertebral spaces were classified as compressions, and dislocated vertebral bodies with a normal morphology and without intervertebral spaces were classified as ankylosis and dislocation. Of the fish that developed deformities during the experiment, 8 had ankylosis and compressions, 7 had compressions and 1 had ankylosis and dislocation. Ankylosis and compression developed in the region between vertebrae number 1 and 16, whereas compressions developed in the region between vertebrae number 13 and 49. Most of the individuals with compression 10 months after transfer to seawater had normal vertebral columns as parr, whereas all individuals with compression and ankylosis 10 months after transfer to seawater had deformed vertebral columns as parr.  相似文献

Suboptimal egg incubation temperature is a risk factor for the development of skeletal deformities in teleosts. Triplicate diploid and triploid Atlantic salmon, Salmo salar L., egg batches were incubated at 6, 8 and 10 °C up until first feeding, whereupon fish were reared on a natural temperature before examination for externally visible skeletal deformities (jaw and spine) and radiographed for vertebral deformities and morphology at the parr stage. Increasing incubation temperatures and triploidy increased the number of fish showing one or more deformed vertebrae. Triploids had significantly higher mean vertebrae cranio‐caudal length (L) and dorsal‐ventral height (H) ratio at 6 and 10 °C than diploids, but triploidy had no effect on mean vertebrae centra area. Triploids demonstrated an increase in lower jaw deformities with increased incubation temperature, whereas jaw deformities were rare in diploids. Fish incubated at 10 °C had a significantly lower mean vertebral number than fish incubated at 6 °C, and triploids had lower mean vertebral numbers than diploids. Diploid fish with 58 vertebrae had a significantly higher mean vertebral centra area than fish with 59 vertebrae, but vertebral number did not affect the mean vertebral L/H ratio. The results are discussed with respect to the welfare and production of farmed salmonids.  相似文献

Vertebral fusions are an established economic concern in farmed Atlantic salmon, but have not been studied in detail in farmed Chinook salmon. Two radiographic studies of vertebral fusions were performed in farmed Chinook salmon. Sixteen of 1,301 (1.2%) smolt and 201 of 2,636 (7.6%) harvest fish had fusions. There were no significant differences in the number of fused vertebrae/fusion in smolt compared with harvest fish. Secondly, tagged fish were repeatedly radiographed to determine the progression of the fusions. Nineteen (4.4%), 23 (5.3%) and 39 (9.0%) fish had fusions as smolt, after 129 days in sea water, and at harvest, respectively. There were no significant differences in the average number of vertebra/fusion between the three time points. Of the fusions that were observed in smolt, additional vertebra did not become fused in 81% of the lesions. Within the rare fusions that did progress due to the involvement of adjacent vertebra, an average of 1.6 vertebrae were added per year. Fish with fusions were significantly lighter than non‐affected fish at harvest. Fusions are common in farmed Chinook salmon; however, they are typically stable after development. As fish with fusions were lighter at harvest, reducing fusions may have an economic benefit.  相似文献

Risk factors for skin lesions observed on the slaughter line in Atlantic salmon, Salmo salar L., were examined in a cohort study in Hordaland County, Norway. The salmon were followed from seawater introduction, starting in April 1994, until the last group was slaughtered in February 1996. The findings indicated that the egg and smolt stages were important factors in the prevalence of skin lesions at slaughter. There appeared to be differences in the risk for skin lesions between salmon from different egg suppliers to the smolt farms. An increase of 3 months between vaccination and seawater introduction increased the relative risk (RR) for skin lesions (RR = 1.9). Salmon vaccinated with a vaccine with adjuvants derived from plant oil appeared to be at higher risk for skin lesions (RR = 4.6) than those vaccinated with a vaccine with adjuvants derived from mineral oil (RR = 1.4). The larger the salmon (from 3.1 to 5.7 kg), the lower the risk for skin lesions (RR = 0.4).  相似文献

Production of Atlantic salmon smolts in recirculation aquaculture systems (RAS) is growing, and novel production protocols using continuous light in RAS are being implemented in the industry. In the present study, Atlantic Salmon parr were exposed to either a traditional protocol (short-day winter signal [12:12 L:D] for 6 weeks) or to continuous light. Both photoperiods were applied in freshwater (FW) and brackish water RAS. Salmon from all treatments were transferred to seawater pens at 200 and 600 g and grown until slaughter size. A control group was smoltified with a 6-week short-day winter signal and kept in FW until sea transfer at 100 g. Continuous light gave a higher growth rate in RAS but reduced feed intake and growth and increased feed conversion ratio during the first 8 weeks in seawater. However, at slaughter, fish exposed to continuous light was bigger than fish given a winter signal because of the higher growth rate in RAS. Slaughter weight was lowest in fish transferred to sea at 600 g, despite having the highest day-degree sum during their life span. The best performing group was the control group transferred at 100 g. All treatments handled transfer to seawater and survival and maturation were not affected by the treatments in RAS. The immune status was examined with a multigene expression assay on BioMark HD platform from parr stage to 5–7 months after seawater transfer. Overall, there was no significant effect of photoperiod or salinity on the expression of the selected immune genes. In sum, the results from this study indicate that using continuous light in RAS may have negative effects on performance shortly after transfer in fish transferred to sea at 200 g, whereas at 600 g, all treatments had reduced growth after transfer irrespective of treatment in RAS.  相似文献

Atlantic salmon, Salmo salar L., parr habitat characterisation is usually performed by in situ measures of key environmental variables taken at the exact fish location if the fishing gear allows precise pinpointing of this location, or in large sampling sections covering a river reach or mesohabitat, often ignoring variability in the immediate vicinity around individual fish. These data may be critically important in the development and validation of habitat preference models. The influences of seven increasing distances of measures, the variation of the number of considered measures and the depth of velocity measurement (bottom or 0.6 of the depth) in the calculations of HSI (Habitat Suitability Index) from a multiple‐experts fuzzy model of Atlantic salmon parr habitat were tested. When a parr was present, six measures collected in a 50‐cm radius around the fish to provide an average measure as input data and velocity measured at 60% of the depth gave the highest HSI values. These results show some potential for the use of an intermediate study scale, between micro‐ and mesohabitat, and questions how fish habitat conditions are currently measured.  相似文献

Two-summer-old Baltic salmon (Salmo salar) from three different stocks in northern Sweden held at Heden, Norrfors and Bergeforsen hatcheries were subjected to five successive seawater challenge tests each from 2 May until 5 July 1983. A pronounced seasonal pattern of plasma sodium levels was observed in sexually immature fish at Norrfors but not at the other two hatcheries. Response surface analysis of sodium data from the Norrfors fish predicted minimum plasma sodium concentration (i.e., maximum seawater adaptation) for transfer of 14.8-cm fish to sea water on 4 June. Precocious male parr at Norrfors had significantly higher plasma sodium concentrations after seawater challenge than did sexually immature fish in all tests. At the time of the fifth seawater challenge test in early July, a number of males at Bergeforsen and Norrfors were becoming sexually mature again and they suffered heavy mortality in sea water. The inhibitory effect of low temperature on testis regression in precocious male parr and its effect on their ability to smoltify is described. It is suggested that the seasonal variation in ambient water temperature near the time of the smolt-run might affect the proportion of precocious males which migrate from northern rivers. We view the seasonal pattern of seawater adaptability in juvenile Baltic salmon as an indicator of the endogenous annual timing system involved in the control of smolting and conclude that it can assist in deciding when to release Baltic salmon smolts from hatcheries.  相似文献

Alternative life-history tactics of masu salmon Oncorhynchus masou are well documented. Subsequent to the freshwater parr stage (age ≥ 1 + years), an anadromous form migrates to the sea after smolting, while a resident form matures without seaward migration. In addition to this typical migratory dimorphism, anecdotal reports based on field observations have indicated that some underyearling masu salmon use estuarine waters. However, no empirical evidence indicates saltwater utilisation and subsequent survival in the early parr stage. Here, we used otolith microchemistry to examine whether a portion of masu salmon parr in northern Japan enters coastal habitats. The otolith Sr:Ca ratios of most juveniles collected from six rivers had consistently low values, indicating that masu salmon parr inhabiting these rivers stay only in freshwater. In contrast, in individuals from a steep-gradient river the Sr:Ca ratios increased at about a 200-µm distance from the otolith core. These results suggest that some masu salmon parr might use brackish water or sea water temporarily. In addition, three masu salmon parr were found in another steep river where a culvert located only ten metres from the river mouth completely blocked upstream migration for spawning. The Sr:Ca ratios in these fish increased at about >200 µm from the otolith core, indicating the parr had immigrated to the non-natal river from the sea. Such flexible behaviour at an early life stage may contribute to the spatial expansion of masu salmon, and the movement could moreover help to stabilise its population dynamics.  相似文献

Abstract– Experimental comparisons were made between release as unfed fry and release as six weeks fed parr, upon the growth and final population density of young salmon and trout over a ten week period. Salmon and trout released into experimental channels as unfed fry at densities of about 19 fish. m-2 showed rapid reduction in numbers, chiefly by downstream dispersal, accompanied by negligible growth. After substantial reduction in numbers, there was a reduced rate of dispersal and rapid growth. Salmon and trout retained in a hatchery at high density (80 to 200 fish. m-2) and fed for six weeks on proprietary food showed slow, but measurable, growth. After release into the channels these fish adjusted their numbers, mainly by downstream dispersal, and showed an increased growth rate. At the end of a ten week period, salmon introduced as fed parr had approximately twice the population density of salmon introduced as unfed fry. No similar difference in population density could be shown for trout. For both species, the fish introduced as fed parr had a lower mean weight after ten weeks than had the fish introduced as unfed fry.  相似文献

Abstract. Both under-yearling and post-yearling Atlantic salmon parr produced high agglutinating antibody titres in response to a single intraperitoneal injection of killed bacterial kidney disease (BKD) cells emulsified in. Freund's complete adjuvant (FCA), Low or no response was observed in animals injected with BKD cells in saline or in animals vaccinated by hyperosmotic immersion. Immunological duration was insufficient in fish vaccinated as under-yearling parr to provide protective immunity 2 years later when the fish had become smolts. Atlantic salmon post-yearling parr injected with BKD cells in FCA demonstrated a reduced prevalence of BKD lesions compared to control animals when both were observed as smolts 1 year after vaccination.  相似文献

Triplicate groups of triploid and diploid Atlantic salmon were fed diets with a low (LP, total P: 7.1 g kg?1), medium (MP, total P: 9.4 g kg?1) or high (HP, total P: 16.3 g kg?1) phosphorous (P) level from first feeding (0.18 g) to transfer to sea water (~50 g, duration: 203 days) and subsequently fed a commercial diet in sea water for 426 days (~3 kg). This study examined the short‐ and long‐term effects of dietary P on freshwater performance (mortality, growth), vertebral deformities (radiology), bone cell activity (ALP and TRACP enzyme activity in vertebrae and scales, and fgf23, bgp and igf‐I relative gene expression in vertebrae), bone mineralization (ash content) and some parameters related to fish condition (heart and liver size). Irrespective of ploidy, at seawater transfer, fish fed the MP diet had significantly highest length and weight and those fed the LP diet significantly lowest length and weight, while those fed the HP diet had intermediate lengths and weights. Increased dietary phosphorus reduced deformities in both ploidies at seawater transfer; however, triploids fed the LP and MP diets had more deformities than diploids fed the respective diets, while there was no ploidy effect observed for fish fed the HP diet. The vertebral bone ash content at seawater transfer was significantly higher in diploids than in triploids when fed the MP diet only. Alkaline phosphatase (ALP) and tartrate‐resistant acid phosphatase (TRACP) enzyme activities and relative gene expression of bone hormones involved in metabolism of plasma phosphate (fgf23) and bone growth (bgp) were not affected by ploidy at seawater transfer, but by dietary P level; LP increased ALP activity and reduced TRACP activity and fgf23 and bgp expression levels in vertebral bone. In scales, LP increased both ALP and TRACP activity. At the termination of the seawater period, the group‐wise pattern in occurrence of vertebral deformities was the same as at seawater transfer. The present results on mortality, growth, bone mineralization and development of skeletal deformities all demonstrate that triploids have a higher P requirement than diploids in fresh water. This study shows that an optimalization of P nutrition for triploid Atlantic salmon can improve health and welfare and reduce down‐grading of triploid salmon.  相似文献

This study assessed refined canola oil (CO) as a supplemental dietary lipid source for juvenile fall chinook salmon, Oncorhynchus tshawytscha, parr with respect to possible effects on their growth and osmoregulatory performance and body composition. Diets with equal protein ( 57%) and lipid ( 19%) content (dry weight basis) were supplemented with lipid from either anchovy oil (AO) or CO with AO so that CO comprised 0 (0CO), 11% (11CO), 22% (22CO), 33% (33CO), 43% (43CO) or 54% (54CO) of the dietary lipid content. Triplicate groups of juvenile chinook salmon were fed their prescribed diets for 104 days in freshwater (FW) and 31 days in seawater (SW) after a 4-day transition period. Dietary fatty acid compositions reflected the different proportions of AO and CO in the supplemental lipid. Diet treatment had no effect on fish growth, feed intake, feed efficiency, protein utilization, fish mortality or terminal whole body water and ash percentages. Whole body lipid percentages were higher in 11CO and 43CO fish than in 33CO fish and in 11CO fish versus 22CO fish. Whole body protein percentages were highest in 33CO, 43CO and 54CO fish and lowest in 0CO and 22CO fish. Terminal whole body fatty acid compositions were influenced strongly by the dietary fatty acid compositions. Haematocrit and muscle water percentages were not affected consistently and plasma Na+ and Cl concentrations were unaffected by diet treatment in FW or 24-h seawater challenges during FW residency. Also, diet treatment had no effect on the physiological parameters after SW residency. We conclude that dietary treatment had no effect on fish growth performance under our experimental conditions. Also, the dietary inclusion of CO neither facilitated nor impaired the transfer of chinook salmon parr to seawater. Thus, CO was found to be an excellent and cost-effective source of supplemental dietary lipid for culture of juvenile fall chinook salmon during freshwater residency.  相似文献

Changes in length, weight, condition factor, water content in tissue, Na+ and Cl? levels in the blood plasma and seawater tolerance of salmon parr were measured after different periods of feeding with control and experimental diets containing inorganic salts. Results indicate differences mainly in relation to gain in length and weight, food conversion and seawater tolerance. Salmon parr seem to be able to cope with a daily amount of inorganic salt of up to 12% of food weight consumed. Tolerance to sea water was greater in fish fed on diets enriched with salts.  相似文献

Duplicate groups of Atlantic salmon parr were fed diets containing either fish oil (FO), rapeseed oil (RO), linseed oil (LO) or linseed oil supplemented with arachidonic acid (20:4n-6; AA) (LOA) from October (week 0) to seawater transfer in March (week 19). From March to July (weeks 20–34) all fish were fed a fish oil-containing diet. Fatty acyl desaturation and elongation activity in isolated hepatocytes incubated with [1-14C]18:3n-3 increased in all dietary groups, peaking in early March about one month prior to seawater transfer. Desaturation activities at their peak were significantly greater in fish fed the vegetable oils, particularly RO, compared to fish fed FO. Docosahexaenoic acid (22:6n-3:DHA) and AA in liver and gill polar lipids (PL) increased in all dietary groups during the freshwater phase whereas eicosapentaenoic acid (20:5n-3; EPA) increased greatly in all groups after seawater transfer. The AA/EPA ratio in tissue PL increased up to seawater transfer and then decreased after transfer. AA levels and the AA/EPA ratio in gill PL were generally higher in the LOA group. The levels of 18:3n-3 in muscle total lipid were increased significantly in the LO, LOA and, to a lesser extent, RO groups prior to transfer but were reduced to initial levels by the termination of the experiment (week 34). In contrast, 18:2n-6 in muscle total lipid was significantly increased after 18 weeks in fish fed the diets supplemented with RO and LO, and was significantly greater in the FO and RO groups at the termination of the experiment. Gill PGF production showed a large peak about two months after transfer to seawater. The production of total PGF post-transfer was significantly lower in fish previously fed the LOA diet. However, plasma chloride concentrations in fish subjected to a seawater challenge at 18 weeks were all lower in fish fed the diets with vegetable oils. This effect was significant in the case of fish receiving the diet with LOA, compared to those fed the diet containing FO. The present study showed that during parr-smolt transformation in Atlantic salmon there is a pre-adaptive increase in hepatocyte fatty acyl desaturation/elongation activities that is controlled primarily by environmental factors such as photoperiod and temperature but that can also be significantly modulated by diet. Feeding salmon parr diets supplemented with rapeseed or linseed oils prevented inhibition of the desaturase activities that is induced by feeding parr diets with fish oils and thus influenced the smoltification process by altering tissue PL fatty acid compositions and eicosanoid production. These effects, in turn, had a beneficial effect on the ability of the fish to osmoregulate and thus adapt to salinity changes.  相似文献

This study tested the hypothesis that Atlantic salmon parr grew suboptimally according to the water temperature regime during the ice‐free season (from May to September) in the subarctic River Reisa (northern Norway). A laboratory‐based growth model was used to estimate the optimal growth which was then compared with the observed growth of the parr in the river. Water temperatures were recorded every second hour with a submersible data logger, and observed and predicted growth of several age classes were compared at two nearby nursery habitats. Except for parr aged 2, most age classes showed no significant change, or even a weight loss, from May to July, whereas from July to September, positive growth was found for all age classes coinciding with favourable temperatures above a critical temperature for growth. The parr growth rates were suboptimal, being lower than the predicted values, but values for observed and predicted body mass were not significantly different in five of 12 comparisons. Hence, the fish were sometimes unable to grow according to the optimal baseline set by the temperature regime. Therefore, factors other than temperature, such as limited food resources and resource competition, may also be a major determinant of Atlantic salmon parr growth. Our study demonstrates how growth predictions based on mathematical models may be employed by fish ecologists to identify growth deficiencies in wild fish populations.  相似文献

The fatty acid compositions of fish tissue lipids usually reflect those of the feed lipids, but few attempts have been made to predict the way in which the profiles change or assess the time required for the fatty acid profile to stabilize following a dietary change. The present focus on the influences of vegetable oils and fish oils on the fatty acid compositions and sensory attributes of fish fillets increases the interest in the ability to make such predictions. A dilution model was tested using data for the influences of feed oils (rape/linseed (V) vs. sand‐eel (F)) and dietary fat concentrations (ca. 30% (H) vs. ca. 20% (L)) on the body growth and fatty acid compositions of the fillets of Atlantic salmon, Salmo salar L., parr and post smolt. Fish given HV or LV feeds during freshwater rearing (mass increase from ca. 19 g to ca. 130 g) were switched to HF and LF feeds following parr–smolt transformation. The changes in fillet percentages of 18:1, 18:2 (n‐6) and 18:3 (n‐3) during 98 days of on‐growing in seawater (mass increase from ca. 130 g to ca. 380 g) conformed closely to predictions made on the basis of the dilution model. Model applications require information about the proportionate increase in fillet fat over time, but the relative changes in body mass can be used as a surrogate provided that both fillet yield (as a % of body mass) and fillet fat percentage change little over time. This is not the case for small salmon, but does seem to apply to larger salmon as they approach harvest size. This means that, for large salmon, ratios of changes in body mass can be substituted for ratios in the quantitative change in fillet fat without the introduction of a large error in the prediction of the change in fillet fatty acid profile following the introduction of a novel feed.  相似文献

This paper describes reproducing pancreas disease in Atlantic salmon, Salmo salar L., parr with intraperitoneal inoculation of homogenized kidney and spleen taken From affected fish. Pancreatic necrosis and cardiomyopathy changes were induced consistently in all experimental groups. A time-course study demonstrated that pancreatic changes occurred as early as 4 days post inoculation and a repair process was evident in some fish on day 7 post inoculation. Heart lesions were first observed on day 5 post inoculation and increased in prevalence and severity as the experiment continued. Both types of lesion were serially passaged. and passively transmitted to fish cohabited with inoculated parr. The incidence of these changes was unaffected by passage of the infective homogenate through a 0.2 μ filter. The homogenate was inactivated after treatment with chloroform. Passive immunization with serum from recovered farmed salmon protected parr against challenge. It is suggested that pancreas disease is caused by a virus with a lipid envelope.  相似文献
