The moisture diffusion coefficient of compression wood in spruce ( P. abies) and tension wood in beech ( F. sylvatica) was examined. The results indicated that the diffusion coefficient measured under steady-state condition (cup method) could well characterize the drying kinetics of the reaction woods. The compression wood offered more resistance to the moisture diffusivity when compared with the corresponding normal wood. The thick cell wall rich in lignin explains the small mass diffusivity in compression wood. In contrast, the mass diffusivity in beech is almost always higher in tension wood than in normal wood, in spite of similar density values. The high moisture diffusion in tension wood can be explained by the ease of bound water diffusion in the gelatinous layers (G-layers). 相似文献

Summary The distribution of lignin in normal and compression wood of loblolly pine ( Pinus taeda L.) has been studied by the technique of lignin skeletonizing. Hydrolysis of the wood carbohydrates with hydrofluoric acid left normal wood tracheids with a uniform distribution of lignin in the S1 and S2 cell wall layers. However, the S3 region of both earlywood and latewood tracheids consistently retained a dense network of unhydrolyzable material throughout, perhaps lignin.Lignin content in compression wood averaged about 7% more than in normal wood and appears to be concentrated in the outer zone of the S2 layer. The inner S2 region, despite helical checking, is also heavily lignified. The S1 layer, although thicker than normal in compression wood tracheids, contains relatively little lignin.Ray cells, at least in normal wood, appear to be lignified to the same extent, if not more so in certain cases, than the longitudinal tracheids. Other locations where lignin may be concentrated include initial pit border regions and the membranes of bordered pits. This report is a detailed excerpt from the Ph. D. dissertation of R. A. P. The crosswise bonding of the layers in laminated solid wood panels results in internal stresses when the humidity varies. The layers hinder one another as a result of the anisotropy of wood. The purpose of this study was to determine the internal stress state in free and constrained swelling. The expansion properties in the three panel directions were measured. Furthermore, the swelling of samples was constrained while the resulting forces were recorded. Hygroscopic warping experiments were carried out inducing a climate gradient within the panels. Afterwards the stresses were calculated from released deformations and non-destructive measurements of the Young’s modulus. The materials used were untreated and heat-treated beech wood, the latter modified in two levels. In addition to homogenously structured panels, treated top layers were combined with an untreated middle layer. Swelling, swelling pressure, warping and internal stresses considerably decreased from untreated to treated wood. If layers from treated and untreated material were combined, stresses and deformations increased as compared to the variants produced only from treated wood. It was concluded that the lower equilibrium moisture content of heat-treated beech wood improves its dimensional stability, which results in smaller deformation differences between the layers. Hence, the stresses were less distinctive. 相似文献

Tension wood (TW) fibres from maple, beech and oak were analysed with special emphasis on the cell wall fine structure and deposition of aromatic compounds within the gelatinous layer (GL). For this purpose, transmission electron microscopy (TEM) was applied after section staining with potassium permanganate. There was evidence for the occurrence of aromatic compounds in the GLs of fibres of all three species. Some GLs showed a concentric sub-layering. Hence, conclusions about the biosynthetic activities during cell wall formation in TW could be derived. Additional information about structural characteristics of TW fibres were obtained by means of field emission electron microscopy. High-resolution micrographs of cell walls were used for measurements of diameter and microfibril angle (MFA) of cellulose aggregates (CAG). CAG of 7 nm were observed although their diameter varied greatly in the GLs. MFA in the secondary wall of TW was slightly smaller than in opposite wood. The microscopic methods provided complementary ultrastructural and topochemical information on tension wood fibres. The subcellular localisation of aromatic compounds and the observations of the ultrastructural morphology will contribute to the understanding of origin and functionality of TW and its characteristic GL. 相似文献

Summary The fine structure of ray parenchyma cells in the sapwood during its transformation to heartwood in Melia azedarach L. (Meliaceae) is described. They have thick walls with electron dense and opaque lamellations. Many branched and unbranched plasmodesmatal connections are present on their lateral and end walls. The cells in the outer sapwood show abundant starch which disappears completely in the inner sapwood ant at the sapwood-heartwood boundary. The morphological features of the starch grain during its depletion are described and their association with lipid formation is indicated. It is suggested that the phenolic materials in the heartwood cells are formed at the sapwood-heartwood boundary.Abbreviations Cy

Ethylene concentrations were determined in gas samples extracted from sealed holes made in the sapwood and heartwood of stems of 70-100-year-old Scots pine (Pinus sylvestris L). Gas could be collected from the heartwood holes by lowering the pressure by means of a large syringe. However, attempts to extract gas from air spaces in the sapwood with the same technique failed, presumably because of lack of an interconnected system of gas-filled canals. High ethylene concentrations, usually in excess of 1 ppm, accumulated in the sapwood holes within one day after sealing. Ethylene concentrations in the sapwood rose to 3-7 ppm during the growing season, and decreased to 0.1-0.3 ppm during the winter. In response to extreme drought, sapwood ethylene concentration increased to 30 ppm, followed by a rapid decrease after the onset of rain. Ethylene concentrations in gas samples from the heartwood were consistently lower than 1 ppm. The lowest values, about 0.1 ppm, were found during the autumn and early winter, whereas values around 0.5 ppm were typical from February to August. 相似文献

Granulated wood ash has been proposed as a slow release fertiliser suitable for forest soils. In this study ectomycorrhizal colonisation of roots and ash granules was studied in a 40-year-old spruce forest treated with 0, 3 or 6 t ha −1 granulated wood ash. We used PCR-RFLP methods for ITS-typing and identification of ectomycorrhizal fungi. In total 20 different ITS-types were recognised on roots in the organic soil horizon. Five of these were identified to species and two to genus. Six species, Tylospora fibrillosa Donk, Cortinarius sp. 3, Piloderma sp. 1, and three unidentified ITS-types (Ve-95-1, Tö-95-3 and Ve-95-9) each occurred on over 5% of the total root tips analysed. Together these comprised 55% of the ectomycorrhizal community on the screened roots. Ash granules collected from the fertilised plots were normally colonised by fungal mycelia. PCR-RFLP analysis of these mycelia revealed the presence of four ITS-types. Three of these (Piloderma sp. 1, Ha-96-3 and Tor-97-1) were also present on the mycorrhizal roots. Piloderma sp. 1 was the most abundant species colonising roots. A possible role of ectomycorrhizal mycelia in the direct mobilisation of nutrients from ash granules is discussed. 相似文献

The effect of cutting the tap root on shoot growth and development of lateral roots was observed in seedling Quercus robur L. growing in PVC tubes containing peat and perlite. Cutting the tap root had little effect on shoot height and leaf number although some treatments caused a significant but slight reduction in shoot dry weight and number of branches. Total root dry weight was similar in control and treated plants but distributed differently between the types of root present. The tap root always formed the largest part of the total root dry weight. In control plants most lateral root dry weight was in roots < 1 mm diameter whereas in treated plants most dry weight was in roots > 1 mm diameter. Development of the root system following root cutting was similar for all treatments: new long laterals > 1 mm diameter with relatively few branches, that formed replacement tap roots, developed near the cut end of the original tap root. Fine laterals (< 1 mm diameter) near the root collar continued to grow forming highly branched systems. 相似文献

Genetic parameters for wood stiffness and strength properties were estimated in a 29-year-old hybrid larch stand ( Larix gmelinii var. japonica × Larix kaempferi). The study included 19 full-sib larch families from Hokkaido, northern Japan. Implications of these genetic parameters in
wood quality improvement are subsequently discussed. Traits included in the analyses were the dynamic modulus of elasticity
of green logs ( E
log), the modulus of elasticity (MOE), the modulus of rupture (MOR), compression strength parallel to the grain (CS) in small
clear specimens, wood density (DEN), and diameter at breast height (DBH). DEN had the lowest coefficients of variation and
MOE the highest. The narrow-sense heritability estimates of E
log, MOE, MOR, and CS were 0.61, 0.44, 0.60, and 0.43, respectively, and those of DEN and all mechanical properties increased
from an inner to outer position within the stem. E
log and DEN had high positive phenotypic (0.52–0.83) and genetic (0.70–0.92) correlations with MOE, MOR, and CS. The mechanical
properties of the inner position of the stem had rather high phenotypic and genetic correlations with those of the outer position
and overall mean. The predicted gains in wood stiffness ( E
log and MOE) were higher than those of the strength properties (MOR and CS). The predicted correlated responses in MOE, MOR,
and CS when selecting for E
log and DEN were 72.6%–97.8% of a gain achievable from direct selection of these traits. DBH showed an insignificant correlation
with all mechanical properties, although selection of this trait had a slightly negative effect on the mechanical properties. 相似文献

Trenching and shoot removal showed the relative influences of living roots and the canopy cast by teak ( Tectona grandis L.F.) coppice regrowth on the growth and yield of interplanted maize ( Zea mays L.). Teak and maize were planted at 1.8 × 1.8 m and 0.3 × 1.8 m spacing respectively.Competition for light started about four weeks after planting and caused etiolated height growth of maize. When combined with root competition it caused stunted growth. Shading also substantially reduced total dry matter production, grain yield, number of cobs per plant, average cob weight, and weight of grains per cob of maize (P<0.01). Living teak roots alone did not have a significant effect (P>0.05) on maize height growth, total dry matter production, grain yield, number of cobs per plant, average cob weight and weight of grains per cob. However, combined with shading, living roots of teak appreciably reduced total dry matter yield and average cob weight of maize (P<0.01). 相似文献

Pine plantations are an important wood source in Brazil, with Pinus taeda being most frequently planted. Most pinewood is directed to the paper and pulp industry, but there is an increasing demand for wood for solid end-uses, requiring large stems from longer rotations which can be obtained using P. taeda as the canopy in two-aged stands. We evaluated radial growth and wood density at different stem heights of P. taeda in the highlands of Southern Brazil over a production period of 36 years and subjected to shelterwood harvest. Cross-sectional disks were obtained from 15 trees in different stem heights; 10 were used for growth analyses and 5 for growth and density analyses. We used disk images and X-ray techniques for growth and density analyses, respectively. Samples were analyzed for ring (width and density), earlywood, and latewood (width, density, and proportion). Ring width varied between 0.4 and 1.7 cm, with the widest rings in the first years (3–5 years.) of growth. Ring density increased with age, with higher densities on the lower stem portions. Mature wood started to be formed from the 16th ring onwards. Shelterwood harvest affected both ring width and density, but the effects on ring width lasted for at least 5 years, while the effects on wood density were short-lasting. Mature P. taeda trees increased their size after the shelterwood harvest without compromising their wood density. Longer production periods of P. taeda as retained trees in the canopy of two-aged stands provide high-quality wood for structural purposes. 相似文献

Summary Various chemicals are used for protecting wood samples against fungi, and some of them are released in water, leading to pollution of the water. The kinetics of pentachlorophenol release in water has here been studied by considering the diffusion through the wood along the three principal axes of diffusion. The experiments and the modelling of the process is successfully coupled. The numerical model takes into account the three principal diffusivities, the partition factor, the volumes of wood and water. The effect of wood sample length along the longitudinal axis of diffusion is studied especially, as longitudinal diffusivity is much higher than the other two principal diffusivities. The effects of the relative volumes of wood and water are also of considerable interest not only for the concentration of the chemical in water but also for the rate of release.Symbols

Wood from Norway spruce ( Picea abies L. Karst.) is biologicallydegraded in exposed conditions. It also has anatomical featuresthat make it difficult to impregnate with preservatives by currentlyavailable industrial processes. In the study reported here,we used the new Linotech process to impregnate Norway sprucewood with hydrophobic linseed oil and then quantified its uptakeand dispersal in anatomically distinct wood tissues. We alsoinvestigated the effects of the wood moisture content on theresults of the impregnation. Samples (500 x 25 x 25 mm) weretaken from 15 trees in a coniferous forest in northern Sweden(64° 10' N, 160320 m a.s.l.). The parameters forthe Linotech process were 23 h treatment time at 0.81.4MPa and 60140°C. To determine the level of uptake, the linseed oil was extracted from the impregnated wood usingmethyl-tertiary-butyl-ether. The uptake was quantitatively analysedby comparing X-ray microdensitometry values obtained followingimpregnation both before and after oil removal. In earlywood, initial moisture content had an obvious effect on the impregnationresult. Six times more oil was taken up when the moisture contentwas greater than ~150 per cent than when it was less than 30per cent. Theoretical calculations, based on density levels, suggest that the water-filled porosity of the wood (water volumedivided by porosity volume) was positively correlated with thelinseed oil uptake, and more strongly correlated in earlywoodthan in latewood. There were also significant differences inuptake between different wood tissues; heartwood/mature woodand heartwood/juvenile wood showed 1020 per cent weightincreases due to linseed oil uptake, compared with 3050per cent in sapwood/mature wood. Examination by scanning electronmicroscopy confirmed these uptake patterns. The moisture contentafter impregnation was about 5 per cent, irrespective of theLinotech process parameters, tissue type and initial moisturecontent. In conclusion, the impregnation process used here resultsin high levels of well-dispersed linseed oil uptake and shouldfacilitate drying. 相似文献
