Tuberculous lesions were identified over a 2-year period in 36 clinically normal red deer from a single herd. The lesions were only present in the retropharyngeal lymph nodes and lymph nodes draining the intestinal tract, indicating infection by the oral route. Mycobacterium avium was isolated from 27 of 29 lesions examined by bacterial culture. Grossly and histologically, the lesions were indistinguishable from those caused by Mycobacterium bovis. DNA restriction endonuclease analysis revealed that all the 26 M. avium isolates available for examination had identical cleavage patterns. These patterns were identical to a New Zealand M. avium serotype 2 isolate from a pig and were very similar to a reference strain of M. avium serotype 2. The DNA examinations indicated that the deer were infected from a common source that was not identified.  相似文献

A tuberculous lesion was found in the prepuce of a 5-year-old tuberculin-positive herd bull at necropsy. Microscopic examination revealed granulomas with Langhans'-type giant cells; Mycobacterium bovis was isolated. In an outbreak of Mycobacterium bovis infection in fallow deer in South Australia, 3 herds related by recent movement of deer were infected. From these 3 infected herds, 47 of 51 animals were tuberculosis at necropsy. A range of lesions was seen most of which differed from classical bovine tuberculosis in that pus was a white liquid, fibrous encapsulation was not marked and calcification was rare. Histopathology was of classical tuberculosis. M. bovis was cultured from lesions and M. avium-intracellulare was cultured from one deer with no visible lesions. The source of M. bovis infection has not been determined.  相似文献

AIMS: To examine natural transmission of bovine tuberculosis (Mycobacterium bovis infection) in captive brushtail possums (Trichosurus vulpecula) and to determine if this mode of transmission could be employed to challenge possums in vaccination studies. METHODS: Three experiments were conducted. In Experiment 1, 11 pairs of possums were housed together in cages, one of the pair having been experimentally infected with M. bovis. Of the in-contact possums 5/11 had been vaccinated with bacille Calmette-Guerin (BCG). In Experiment 2, three susceptible possums were placed in a colony of 19 possums that had been experimentally infected with M. bovis. In Experiment 3, the four most socially active possums in each of two colonies (24 possums in one colony and 23 in the other) were experimentally infected with M. bovis, and 10 of the remaining possums in each colony were vaccinated with BCG. RESULTS: In Experiment 1, transmission of M. bovis infection occurred in only 1/11 pairs. In Experiment 2, none of the three in-contact possums became infected. In Experiment 3, infection was transmitted to 5/20 in-contact possums in one colony and 12/19 in-contact possums in the other. The possums that became infected by natural transmission were significantly more socially interactive than those that remained free of infection (p<0.05). CONCLUSIONS: When susceptible and infected possums were randomly mixed, the rate of transmission of M. bovis was low, but when highly sociable possums were infected the rate of transmission increased markedly. The risk of transmission was dependent on the close proximity of infected and susceptible possums and the frequency and duration of their social interactions. Natural transmission from experimentally infected to incontact possums in a colony would be a useful way of studying the pathogenesis of tuberculosis in this species, and the social behaviour of the possums studied should be taken into account. The high degree of variation in the rate of natural transmission of M. bovis infection between possums makes this mode of transmission unreliable for assessing vaccine efficacy.  相似文献

AIM: To describe the clinical course of a dog infected with Mycobacterium bovis causing a granulomatous pneumonia. CLINICAL FINDINGS: The dog initially presented with a persistent cough, inappetence and weight loss. Clinical findings included a fever, dyspnoea and tachypnoea, with haematological evidence of a mild neutrophilia and hypoalbuminaemia. Radiographs of the chest demonstrated a concomitant pneumothorax, pleural effusion, and a consolidated area within the left caudal lung lobe. An exploratory thoracotomy revealed this to be a ruptured granulomatous lesion. Subsequent histopathological, microbiological and genetic studies identified M. bovis as the causal agent. CLINICAL SIGNIFICANCE: Mycobacterium bovis infections should be included in the differential diagnosis of pulmonary disease and pleural effusions in dogs living in regions of New Zealand known to have a high incidence of mycobacterial infection in wildlife and farm animals.  相似文献

CASE: A veterinarian developed tenosynovitis and secondary carpal tunnel syndrome following accidental inoculation of Mycobacterium bovis during the necropsy of a tuberculous possum from Westland, New Zealand.

CLINICAL RELEVANCE: M. bovis infection is a zoonotic disease, and occupational exposure to tuberculous animals places people at risk of contracting the disease.

CONCLUSIONS: Adhering to safe work practices reviewed in this article is important to minimise the risk of infection to people handling tuberculous animals.  相似文献

At necropsy, a mature muskox cow was found to have exceedingly low serum and liver copper concentrations of 4.8 = mumol/L and 0.02 mmol/kg, respectively. Mycobacterium bovis isolates from an outbreak of bovine tuberculosis in a herd of cattle in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, were analysed by spoligotyping and variable-number tandem repeat PCR analysis of the mycobacterial interspersed repetitive unit and exact tandem repeats. Molecular typing revealed a high genetic diversity of strains in the herd. The genetic diversity could be explained by the introduction of infected animals from different sources.  相似文献
