Three cases of vaginal perforation after coitus are discussed. The most consistent clinical sign is a small amount of blood escaping from the vulvar lips immediately after breeding. Secondary infection and posttraumatic swelling may cause abdominal pain due to rectal impaction. Treatment with high levels of an appropriate antibiotic is important to reduce the risk of a severe infectious peritonitis. The use of artificial insemination or a breeding roll to prevent full intromission is recommended.  相似文献

We hypothesized that the LH response to GnRH would be greater as the interval from foaling increases, whereas the FSH response would decrease, and that corpus luteum function after the first ovulation would be similar to that after the second ovulation. At parturition, mares were assigned to receive GnRH (2 micrograms/kg) intravenously on 1) d 3 postpartum (n = 6); 2) d 6 postpartum (n = 6); 3) d 1 of first postpartum estrus (foal estrus) and again on d 1 of second postpartum estrus (n = 8). Blood was collected through an indwelling cannula at -2, -1 and 0 h relative to GnRH stimulation (basal concentrations) and at .25, .5, .75, 1.0, 1.5, 2.0, 2.5, 3.0, 3.5 and 4.0 h post-GnRH. Samples were assayed for concentrations of LH and FSH. Basal concentrations of LH were lower (P less than .05) for mares given GnRH on d 3 postpartum than for mares on d 1 of foal estrus. A rise in concentrations of LH was noted within 30 min in all groups, but the response to GnRH on d 1 of the first estrus was less (P less than .05) than on d 1 of second postpartum estrus. As the interval from parturition increased, the amount of LH secreted in response to GnRH increased. The maximum response to GnRH was greater (P less than .05) during d 1 of the first estrus than on d 3 or 6 postpartum and was greater on d 1 of cycle 2 than on d 1 of cycle 1.(ABSTRACT TRUNCATED AT 250 WORDS)  相似文献

Blood samples were obtained at 3-min intervals for 2 h beginning at 0800 h and at 15-min intervals for an additional 6 h during 4 phases of the estrous cycle [0 (n=7), 3 (n=6), 7–9 (n=5) and 15 (n=8) days post-ovulation]. The 3-min data were subjected to a computerized cycle detection program (Pulsar) for estimating frequency and amplitude of regular and irregular episodic fluctuations in hormone concentrations in the presence of high levels of random measurement errors.Mean FSH concentrations were not different (P>.05) among groups. The overall mean was 24.5 ± 6.3 ng/ml. Ultradian ryhthms were observed in each series of blood samples during all phases of the estrous cycle. Within each phase of the cycle, considerable variation was observed among mares. For example, mean concentrations of the d-0 group mares varied from 0.9 to 138.1 ng/ml, mean peak amplitudes varied from 0.6 to 67 ng/ml and mean peak durations ranged from 3.6 to 10.2 minutes. However, the frequency of occurrence of the peaks (interpeak interval) was relatively constant. Mean interpeak intervals ranged from 13.2 to 24 min. Similar patterns of secretion were observed for d-3, d-7 and d-15 groups. The peak frequency was faster for the d 7–9 and 15 groups compared with the d-0 group. Results indicate blood samples need to be obtained at intervals of 3-min or less to accurately describe FSH ultradian rhythm.  相似文献

Three mares were treated for vaginal evisceration of a portion of the small intestine. Evisceration occurred in 2 mares shortly after breeding accidents in which the stallion's penis penetrated the vaginal fornix dorsal to the cervix. The affected bowel was replaced through the laceration, and the vaginal defects were sutured with the mares standing, utilizing epidural anesthesia. One mare recovered without complications, was subsequently bred, and delivered a foal with no difficulty. The other mare developed signs of a strangulating small intestinal obstruction 24 hours after the injury, necessitating exploratory celiotomy. Two meters of small intestine had become devitalized secondary to avulsion of the mesentery and adjacent vascular supply during the evisceration. The affected portion was resected and a jejunocecostomy was performed. Recovery was uncomplicated and 21 months later the mare was 9 months in foal. A third mare was treated unsuccessfully for evisceration of several meters of small intestine through the external urethral orifice after rupture of the urinary bladder.  相似文献

Effects of testosterone propionate (TP) treatment on plasma concentrations of luteinizing hormone (LH) and follicle-stimulating hormone (FSH) before and after an injection of gonadotropin releasing hormone (GnRH) were studied using ovariectomized cows and pony mares. An initial injection of GnRH (1 microgram/kg of body weight) was followed by either TP treatment or control injections for 10 (cows) or 11 (ponies) d. A second GnRH injection was administered 1 d after the last TP or oil injection. Concentrations of LH and FSH were determined in samples of plasma taken before and after each GnRH injection. Control injections did not alter the response to GnRH (area under curve) nor the pre-GnRH concentrations of LH and FSH in ovariectomized cows or ponies. Testosterone treatment increased (P less than .01) the FSH release in response to GnRH in ovariectomized mares by 4.9-fold; there was no effect in cows, even though average daily testosterone concentrations were 59% higher than in pony mares. Testosterone treatment reduced the LH release in response to GnRH by 26% in ovariectomized mares (P less than .05) and by 17% in ovariectomized cows (P approximately equal to .051). These results are consistent with a model that involves ovarian androgens in the regulation of FSH secretion in the estrous cycle of the mare, but do not support such a model in the cow.  相似文献

To evaluate embryo transfer as a possible method to circumvent infertility in mares, embryos from 14 normal and 14 infertile mares were collected three times and examined. Fewer flushes (p less than 0.05) from normal than infertile mares (1/42 vs 9/42) contained only abnormal embryos whereas more flushes (p less than 0.05) from normal than infertile mares contained one or more normal embryos (28/42 vs 8/42). More flushes (p less than 0.05) from normal than infertile mares contained embryos (29/42 vs 17/42). The embryo diameters (mm) at either day-7 or day-8 post ovulation were greater (p less than 0.01) for normal than infertile mares (day 7: 07 +/- 0.08 vs 0.3 +/- 0.07; day 8: 1.1 +/- 0.18 vs 0.7 +/- 0.23). Six of the 10 (60%) flushes that contained only abnormal embryos were recovered from ares with positive uterine cultures or moderate to severe endometritis. The embryos recovered from normal mares were greater in quantity and better in quality.  相似文献

In Exp. 1, 16 long-term ovariectomized pony mares were used to determine the effects of treatment with estradiol benzoate (EB) and dihydrotestosterone (DHT) benzoate alone, and in combination, on secretion of follicle stimulating hormone (FSH) and luteinizing hormone (LH) in daily blood samples and after three consecutive injections of gonadotropin releasing hormone (GnRH). Administration of EB alone, or in combination with DHT, every other day for 11 d reduced (P less than .05) concentrations of FSH and increased (P less than .05) concentrations of LH in daily blood samples, and increased (P less than .05) the secretion of both gonadotropins after administration of GnRH. Treatment with DHT alone had no effect (P greater than .10) on LH or FSH concentrations in daily blood samples and no effect on the LH response to exogenous GnRH. There was no interaction (P greater than .10) between DHT and EB treatment for any hormonal characteristic. In Exp. 2, the control mares and mares treated with DHT in Exp. 1 were equally allotted to treatment with vehicle or testosterone propionate (TP) every other day for six injections, and then GnRH was administered as in Exp. 1. Treatment with TP had no effect (P greater than .10) on LH or FSH concentrations in daily blood samples but increased (P less than .05) the FSH response to exogenous GnRH, confirming our findings in previous experiments. It is concluded that the TP-induced stimulation of FSH secretion after exogenous GnRH in ovariectomized mares may involve estrogens produced from aromatization of the injected androgen.(ABSTRACT TRUNCATED AT 250 WORDS)  相似文献

Ticarcillin and clavulanic acid (potassium clavulanate) were administered to normal oestrous mares intravenously (i.v.) at a dose of 50 and 1.67 mg/kg for ticarcillin and clavulanate, respectively. In a crossover design, the same drugs were administered intrauterine (i.u.) at a dose of 12.4 and 0.4 mg/kg for ticarcillin and clavulanate, respectively. The i.u. dose was administered in 100 mL of saline solution. Endometrial tissue biopsies and plasma samples were collected after drug administration for the determination of ticarcillin and clavulanate concentrations by high-pressure liquid chromatography and pharmacokinetic calculations. After i.u. administration both drugs were poorly absorbed into the plasma. The ticarcillin half-life from tissue and plasma was short after i.v. administration. Although concentrations in tissue were higher after i.u. administration than i.v., concentrations of ticarcillin declined rapidly, which would necessitate frequent treatment in order to maintain drug concentrations above the minimum inhibitory concentrations (MIC) throughout the treatment period. Clavulanate concentrations in tissue were either low or persisted for only a short time after administration via either route. It appears that addition of clavulanate to the formulation for treatment of i.u. infections in mares is of questionable value based on these concentrations.  相似文献

Open surgical ovariohysterectomy in the mare provides limited visualisation and a long surgical incision. Laparoscopically‐assisted ovariohysterectomy has been performed by the authors in 3 mares with pyometra. This approach does seem to offset some of these disadvantages.  相似文献

Cortisol, triiodothyronine (T3), thyroxine (T4), insulin, and glucose responses to thyrotropin-releasing hormone (TRH) were evaluated in 12 healthy, mature horses and in 7 horses and 4 ponies with clinical signs of pituitary adenoma (PA). Within 1 hour after TRH administration, the increase in T3 and T4 was similar in healthy horses and animals with PA. Plasma cortisol in the group with PA increased (P less than 0.05) within 0.25 hours after TRH administration, and remained increased for 1.5 hours. In the control group, a significant increase in plasma cortisol concentrations did not develop after TRH administration. Plasma glucose and insulin concentrations were higher in animals with PA than in the healthy horses throughout the experiment (6 hours).  相似文献

We investigated the half-life of oxytocin in reproductively normal mares and the prostaglandin response after oxytocin administrations. Mares were given oxytocin, 10 or 25 iu, i.v., on the day of, or 2 days after, ovulation, and frequent jugular blood samples were collected for analysis of oxytocin and Prostaglandin F metabolite (PGFM) by RIA. Neither dose of oxytocin nor day of treatment affected the half-life of the exogenous oxytocin, which was determined to be 6.8 min. A significant increase in PGFM was observed within 6 min of oxytocin administration and peak values were observed within 10 min. PGFM response after oxytocin administration on the day of ovulation appeared elevated compared to the response 2 days after ovulation.  相似文献

To determine the optimum procedure for raising hyperimmune sera to tetanus toxin, three adjuvants, four antigen preparations and two routes of administration in various combinations were investigated in sheep. Oil-in-water adjuvants alone or in combination with aluminum gels were superior to aluminium gels on their own. This disadvantage of aluminium gels was partially but not completely abrogated when the frequency of doses was increased to three per week. Intensity of local reaction was strongly correlated with immune response; the more immunogenic a dose, the more reactive. Reactivity of oily adjuvants could be lessened by use of a more suitable route of administration, thus oily adjuvants appeared suitable for use when administered by the intraperitoneal route even though moderate to severe reactions resulted from subcutaneous injections. Of other variables investigated, toxin did not confer any advantage over toxoid as an immunogen, purified toxoid was a significantly better immunogen than unpurified toxoid and two large bleeds (30% of total blood volume each) every six weeks rather than 20 ml test bleeds did not affect the titre of the hyperimmune serum produced.  相似文献

OBJECTIVE: To evaluate changes of glycoconjugate in uterine glands of endometrial tissues obtained from mares. ANIMALS: adult mares. PROCEDURE: Uterine biopsy samples were collected during the breeding season and analyzed histologically for signs of chronic endometrial degeneration. Stage of the estrous cycle was established, using clinical examination and determination of hormonal status. Uterine tissue samples were analyzed, using lectin histochemical and immunohistochemical techniques (estrogen and progesterone receptors). Connective tissues were stained to determine alterations of ground substance in periglandular fibrosis. RESULTS: Of 50 mares, 30 (60%) were classified as normal or having modest alterations, and 20 (40%) were classified as having moderate or severe endometrial degeneration. In normal equine endometrium, several lectins (Helix pomatia agglutinin, Lotus tetragonolobus agglutinin, Ricinus communis I agglutinin, Ulex europaeus agglutinin, and wheat germ agglutinin) bound to glycoconjugates of the luminal epithelium and openings of uterine glands. Lectin binding patterns of cystic dilated glands or fibrotic glands in endometrial samples were remarkably strong, whereas normal surrounding cells remained unstained. Lotus tetragonolobus lectin was not suitable for detecting endometrial alterations. Connective tissues stained with Alcian blue and results of Hale colloidal-iron binding revealed acidic ground substance in periglandular fibrosis. Estrogen and progesterone receptors were evenly distributed in healthy and affected endometrial samples. CONCLUSIONS AND CLINICAL RELEVANCE: Glycoconjugate patterns of uterine glands were altered in mares with chronic endometrial degeneration. Therefore, uterine secretions are likely to be altered. These changes are not induced by changes in content of estrogen and progesterone receptors in endometrial tissues.  相似文献

Blood lipid and lipoprotein concentrations were measured and compared between euthyroid and thyroidectomized mares on low-fat or high-fat diets to test the hypothesis that hypothyroidism alters the blood lipid response to higher dietary fat intake. Four healthy adult mares and four adult mares that had been thyroidectomized 3 to 6 mo earlier were placed on low-fat or high-fat diets according to a replicated 2 x 2 Latin square design consisting of two 5-wk feeding periods separated by a 2-wk washout interval. Plasma lipid concentrations were measured at 0, 3, 4, and 5 wk, and plasma lipase activities were measured at the end of each 5-wk feeding period. Compared with euthyroid mares (0.46 ng/mL [range 0.34 to 0.68 ng/mL T3], and 21.5 ng/mL [range 18.1 to 25.1 ng/mL T4], respectively), median serum concentrations of T3 and T4 were lower (P = 0.029 and P = 0.021, respectively) in thyroid-ectomized mares (0.26 ng/mL [range 0.23 to 0.26 ng/ mL T3], and undetectable T4). Serum T4 concentrations were below the limits of detection in thyroidectomized horses. Alterations in body weight over 5 wk did not differ between groups. Mean plasma very low density lipoprotein (VLDL) and triglyceride (TG) concentrations were higher (P = 0.045 and 0.034, respectively) in hypothyroid mares (55.42 +/- 35.05 mg/dL and 52.83 +/- 34.46 mg/dL, respectively) compared with euthyroid mares (28.28 +/- 13.76 mg/dL and 23.53 +/- 9.84 mg/dL, respectively). Mean plasma total cholesterol (TC) concentrations increased from 88.73 +/- 25.49 mg/dL at baseline to 103.93 +/- 24.42 mg/dL after 5 wk on the low-fat diet, but increased by a greater magnitude (P = 0.006 diet +/- time interaction) in mares that were on the high-fat diet (81.05 +/- 17.24 mg/dL and 123.84 +/- 32.27 mg/ dL, respectively). Mean plasma TC concentrations were higher (P = 0.099) in hypothyroid mares (116.16 +/- 32.89 mg/dL) than in euthyroid mares (89.56 +/- 14.45 mg/ dL). Higher post-heparin plasma lipoprotein lipase and hepatic lipase activities (P = 0.012 andP = 0.017, respectively) were detected in mares that were on the high-fat diet (2.66 +/- 0.91 micromol FA x mL(-1) x h(-1) and 2.95 +/- 0.49 micromol FA x mL(-1) x h(-1), respectively) vs. a low-fat diet (1.75 +/- 0.55 micromol FA x mL(-1) x h(-1) and 2.27 +/- 0.59 micromol FA x mL(-1) x h(-1), respectively). We conclude that plasma VLDL and TG concentrations are elevated in hypothyroid mares, but the blood lipid response to higher dietary fat intake is not influenced by hypothyroidism.  相似文献

Thirty-two crossbred boars (Hampshire X Duroc X Yorkshire) were reared under natural lighting (35 lx) or supplemental lighting (1,400 lx) beginning at 4 wk of age. Boars received supplemental lighting from six 40-W fluorescent bulbs between 0530 and 2030 in a nursery unit. From 9 to 32 wk of age, boars received either natural lighting (30 lx) or supplemental lighting (100 lx) in a growing-finishing unit. Blood samples were collected from indwelling cannulae at 20-min intervals for 6 h every 2 wk from 2.5 to 7 mo of age. Libido scores were evaluated during alternate weeks when intensive blood samples were not taken. Libido scores were not different between natural and supplemental lighting treatments (P greater than .30). However, at 122 d of age, libido scores of boars exposed to supplemental lighting tended to be higher (P = .10) than those exposed to natural lighting. Although mean serum concentrations of luteinizing hormone (LH) were higher (P less than .05) in boars at 75, 89, 103 and 131 d of age reared under supplemental lighting than boars of the same age reared under natural lighting, the number of LH secretory spikes was similar between the treatment groups (P = .39). Serum concentrations of LH decreased in both treatment groups as boars became older (P less than .05). However, the incidence of LH spikes was similar across ages and between treatment groups from 2.5 to 7 mo of age. Mean serum concentrations of follicle stimulating hormone and testosterone were similar between treatments (P greater than .75).  相似文献
