Summary There is a positive correlation between the percentage of compression wood and specific gravity in Pinus wallichiana. Where compression wood is present a definite increase in specific gravity occurs in an annual ring, but the influence of compression wood on specific gravity is only local. The first-formed earlywood portion of the ring is the most suitable sampling point for a comparison of specific gravity between rings of the same or different trees.We are thankful to Professor H. O. Summary Forty lobiolly pine trees were studied for the purpose of finding a possible reason for the growth rate-specific gravity controversy. In addition, properties such as specific gravity of earlywood and latewood, latewood percentage, and their relations with growth rate and specific gravity of wood were investigated.The results show that, in general, significant relationship do exist between specific gravity and number of rings per inch for growth rates ranging from approximately 3...8 rings per inch. Specific gravity was generally unrelated with slower growth rates, i.e., more than 8 rings per inch.Specific gravity of specimens having the same number of rings per inch varied according to height-decreasing with increasing height. Latewood percentage was related to number of rings per inch in a similar manner as specific gravity. Within a tree, latewood percentage of wood having the same number of rings per inch decreased with increasing height.Negative relationships between earlywood specific gravity and number of rings per inch were found to be significant for the 30 percent height and for all heights when combined. However, there was no significant relationship between latewood specific gravity and number of rings per inch. Average laterwood specific gravity decreased with height. Earlywood specific gravity only decreased from 5.3...30 percent height levels and then showed an increase. In general, wood properties such as specific gravity and latewood percentage of wood, specific gravity of earlywood and latewood, varied more from breast height to approximately the 30 percent height, than between equal distances above the 30 percent height level.  相似文献

  • ? Each annual ring in pines consists of earlywood and latewood with considerable difference in density and width. To get a better determination of the genetic regulation of total wood density in Scots pine (Pinus sylvestris L.), density and width of those ring sections were measured in annual ring numbers 12 to 21 of Scots pines in a full-sib progeny test. Tree height and stem diameter were also measured.
  • ? Heritabilities for the annual ring sections increased with age for earlywood density from 0.08 to approximately 0.25; latewood density showed similar reductions. Heritability over all 10 annual rings was 0.25 for earlywood density, 0.22 for latewood density, 0.29 for height and 0.10 for stem diameter. Genetic correlations between earlywood and latewood density and growth traits were negative, while they were strongly positive between densities of adjacent annual rings (0.70–1.0).

Despite the higher heritability of earlywood density, the strong positive genetic correlation between those traits indicates little benefit from focusing solely on earlywood density when selecting for wood density. Analysing earlywood and latewood separately does not benefit from including the width of the corresponding ring section as a covariate. Juvenile wood may possibly turn into mature wood 15–20 y from the pith.

    A better understanding of the sorption behavior of different wood structures could be useful in protecting wood against wood deterioration and fungal attack. The purpose of this study was to investigate the effect of differences among earlywood, latewood, and tree ring location within the stem cross-section of loblolly pine (Pinus taeda) on the sorption kinetics and statics of water vapor under ambient conditions. The water vapor sorption of earlywood and latewood in different tree rings was recorded using a dynamic contact angle analyzer under relative humidity changes from 11 to 89%, as provided by saturated salt solutions. Earlywood had higher sorption rates and diffusion coefficients than latewood, while outer tree rings had higher sorption rates and diffusion coefficients than inner tree rings. The sorption isotherms of earlywood, latewood, and different tree ring locations within the stem cross-section were fitted very well by a Hailwood–Horrobin model.  相似文献

    Genetic parameters for various wood density traits were estimated in 29-year-old trees of 18 full-sib families of hybrid larch (Larix gmelinii var. japonica × Larix kaempferi) F1. Intra-ring density variation (IDV) was also evaluated using a model that expresses the pattern curve from earlywood to latewood as a power function. A high IDV indicates an abrupt change in wood density from earlywood to latewood. The ring width and wood density traits of individual rings were determined by X-ray densitometry. Overall wood density (RD) was shown to increase with increasing ring number, ranging from 0.42–0.59 g/cm3, whereas IDV of individual rings decreased gradually from pith outwards. Estimates of individual tree narrow-sense heritability of RD and IDV were 0.66 and 0.67, respectively. IDV showed negative genetic and phenotypic correlations with RD (r g = −0.99, r p = −0.72). The predicted genetic gains in latewood proportion and IDV were higher than that of RD. These results suggest that the intra-ring density variation is under moderate genetic control equivalent to wood density. The trend of increasing wood density from earlywood to latewood was associated with changes in both tracheid diameter and cell wall thickness.  相似文献

    Summary Fibril angles were greater for earlywood (avg. 33.4°) than for latewood tracheids (avg. 26.9°). For earlywood, fibril angle did not differ between growth rates when the specific gravity was low (avg. 33.3°). When the specific gravity was high, wood of fast growth had a higher fibril angle (avg. 35.1°) than wood of slow growth (avg. 32.0°). No differences were detected between core, middle, and outer wood. In latewood tracheids, fibril angles were greater in corewood (avg. 28.0°) than in middle or outer wood (avg. 26.3°). For whole wood (a weighted average of earlywood and latewood), fibril angle averaged 30.7° and was greater in corewood (avg. 32.2°) than in middle or outer wood (avg. 29.9°).  相似文献

    ABSTRACT

    This paper presents the results of FTIR spectroscopy of the 1988–1998 annual ring early and latewood of Larix gmelinii (Rupr.) Rupr.) found along the polar treeline (Taimyr Peninsula, 70°52′53″ N, 102°58′26″ E). We analyzed samples of early and latewood to identify absorption bands of groups of wood components, as well as the bands that characterized the interactions among the components. We studied bound water spectral characteristics for wood formed in different years. An analysis of the correlation between the values of spectral absorption bands and mean monthly air temperature and precipitation showed that May-August weather had the greatest influence on the synthesis of the main polymeric components of early and latewood. Air temperature had a considerable effect on polymer composition of cell walls forming in early and latewood, whereas precipitation influenced only earlywood. FTIR spectroscopy is a promising tool to develop information on the biochemical composition of the walls of early and late tracheids of annual rings and on weather and climate influences on cell wall synthesis.  相似文献

    Transverse swelling and its anisotropy in hinoki (Chamaecyparis obtusa) in several kinds of organic liquids and in water were investigated by means the replica method. There was more cross-sectional swelling of cell walls and cell wall thickness in earlywood than in latewood. Marked swelling toward cell lumens was observed in wood swollen in liquids that had higher swelling potentials than water. This suggests that the swelling of cell walls in these liquids is much greater than the external swelling. Feret's diameters of the cell lumens were reduced by swelling in all the observed cases except in the tangential direction of earlywood, suggesting that cell walls swell to a much less extent in width than in thickness. Deformation of cell shapes caused by the tensile force from the latewood were observed in the earlywood and in the transitional region from earlywood to latewood. When swollen in water, transverse swelling anisotropy caused only by the swelling in cell wall thickness were calculated to be 1.2 for the whole region over an annual ring and 1.4 for the earlywood. These values could not account for the external swelling anisotropy of 2.1. Considering obvious deformations of cell shapes in the earlywood and in the transitional region, we conclude that the interaction between earlywood and latewood is one of the prime factors contributing to the transverse swelling anisotropy of coniferous wood.Part of this report was presented at the 48th Annual Meeting of the Japan Wood Research Society, Nagoya, April 1998  相似文献

    Summary Based on 15-year-old black spruce (Picea mariana) trees from 40 half-sib families sampled from 9 blocks of a family test in New Brunswick, this study examined intertree and intratree variation in various wood density and ring width characteristics. Of various variance components of the intertree variation, a remarkable variance component due to family was found in wood density characteristics (viz. average wood density, average earlywood density and latewood density of the tree), and these characteristics are thus under strong genetic control (h i 2 ranging from 0.60 to 0.86, and h f 2 from 0.56 to 0.68). It, to a lesser extent, applies to ring width characteristics at the tree level (viz. average ring width, and average earlywood width, latewood width and latewood percent of the tree) that show a lower heritability (h? from 0.18 to 0.28, and h f 2 from 0.22 to 0.36). Both block and block × family interaction contribute little to the total intertree variation encountered in 40 families from 9 blocks, while tree-to-tree variation within the family accounts for most (over 3/4) of the total intertree variation.Compared to the intertree variation (tree-to-tree variation within the family), the intratree variation in various wood characteristics studied is considerably larger in this species. It appears that most intraring wood density characteristics show a relatively smaller intertree variation but a relatively larger intratree variation as compared to ring width characteristics (except latewood width and latewood percent). Latewood width and latewood percent show the smallest intertree variation and the largest intratree variation. Between the two sources of the radial intratree variation, cambial age explains much more variation in most intraring wood density characteristics, while ring width accounts for more variation in earlywood width, latewood width and intraring density variation. This indicates that wood density of growth rings in this species is dependent more on cambial age than ring width (growth rate). Among various wood density and ring width characteristics studies, maximum (latewood) density shows the strongest response to calendar year.     In this study we investigated the abrasive wear property of Douglas fir (Pseudostuga menziesii Franco) on abrasive paper using test specimens with various dimensions and annual ring widths. The effect of the annual rings on the abrasive wear property of Douglas fir was clarified from the relation with the compression strength of the wood specimens. The dispersion of the wear coefficient, which was calculated as the wear volume divided by the friction distance and the load applied to the friction surface, varied when there were fewer than approximately three annual rings in the specimen, as did the compression strength. As clarified from these results, it was found that the effect of the annual rings on the abrasive wear and compression properties of Douglas fir is closely related to the earlywood/ latewood ratio.Part of this report was presented at the 50th Annual Meeting of the Japan Wood Research Society, Kyoto, April 2000  相似文献

    In order to investigate the response to climate changes in radial growth of Picea crassifolia at the lower tree line in the middle Qilian mountains in northwestern China, relationships of standardized chronologies of annua ring, earlywood and latewood widths with mean monthly temperature and total monthly precipitation were analyzed by ways of correlation and pointer year analyses. The results show that annual ring, earlywood and latewood widths are significantly negatively correlated with mean monthly temperature in June and Juy. Annual ring and eadywooc widths are significantly and positively correlated with tOtal monthly precipitation in March, May and June and negatively correlated with total monthly precipitation in September. Latewood width is less sensitive to climate changes than the width of earlywood and insignificantly sensitive to precipitation. The results of pointer year analysis revealed that whet summer temperatures are higher than the mean summer temperature synchronization and the summer precipitatior lower than mean summer precipitation synchronization, narrow annual rings are formed. Wide annual rings are formec~ when summer temperatures are lower than the mean summer temperature synchronization and summer precipitation higher than mean summer precipitation synchronization. The results indicate that more precipitation in the spring and summer is helpful for radial growth while warmer summer restricts radial growth of P. crassifolia at the lower tree line in the middle Qilian mountains.  相似文献

    [目的]为选择适合试验区域未来气候变化条件下生长的杉木种源,[方法]运用年轮气候学方法,研究52个杉木地理种源3个树轮宽度指标对气候因子的响应。[结果]整轮宽度、早材宽度和晚材宽度与年平均气温的响应呈强负相关关系,相关系数最大值分别为-0.515、-0.590和-0.451;整轮宽度、早材宽度和晚材宽度与年最高气温均呈强负相关关系,相关系数最大值分别为-482、-0.624和-0.499。[结论]未来试点年平均气温有升高的趋势,这将会在一定程度上抑制杉木的径向生长,而选择对温度响应不太敏感的湖南江华、广西博白和广西资源种源在试验林所在区域进行造林,将是解决这一问题的有效途径。  相似文献

    This study focused on the distribution of wood components along a cross section of a spruce stem. Thin samples of earlywood and latewood were analysed by special micro-scale analytical techniques. Heartwood contained significantly more lignin and less cellulose than sapwood. The total content of hemicelluloses was the same along the radial direction, but the distribution of sugar units differed. The amounts of arabinoglucuronoxylan and pectins were larger in the heartwood. The transition zone between heartwood and sapwood had a specific composition, with less lignin and lipophilic extractives than heartwood and sapwood. For earlywood and latewood, significant differences were found in the distribution of sugar units in hemicelluloses. Latewood contained clearly more galactoglucomannan than earlywood, and conversely less pectins.     Summary Variations and correlations of various ring width and ring density features were analyzed in 18 European oak (Quercus petraea andQuercus robur) trees from northeastern France. In light of these analyses, the goodness of various tree-ring features as a climatic parameter was discussed. In general, ring density features (viz. earlywood density, latewood density, average ring density, minimum density and maximum density) show a stronger response to calendar year, a comprehensive climatic variable, than ring width features (viz. earlywood width, latewood width, total ring width and latewood percent). The response of latewood features (viz. latewood width, latewood density and maximum latewood density) is stronger than that of earlywood features (viz. earlywood width, earlywood density and minimum earlywood density). Average ring density seems to be the most sensible tree-ring feature in European oak in terms of the response to calendar year. Moreover, total ring width as a climatic parameter is not as good as latewood width, and maximum (latewood) density and minimum (earlywood) density appears not to contain as much climatic information as (average) latewood density and (average) earlywood density, respectively.This project was supported by the institut National de la Recherche Agromonique (INRA).     The purpose of this study was to explore the ring characteristics of Japanese cedar (Cryptomeria japonica) tree growth with thinning and unthinning regimes. The trees grown with thinning regimes increased in average ring width (RW), earlywood width, latewood width, ring density (RD), earlywood density, latewood density, maximum ring density, and latewood percentage (LWP) for the entire period of 16 years after thinning, as compared to those grown with unthinning regimes. The RW and RD components showed different reactions lasting several years after thinning. Overall, thinning caused immediate production (first year) of higher RD, lasting for several years; however, wider RW was delayed up to several years after treatment. There was a weak relationship between RW (growth rate) and wood density; and there were significant positive relationships between the RD and LWP. The results suggest that the compression wood produced after thinning.  相似文献

    Summary The effects of air-drying and solvent-drying on the sapwood of Abies grandis have been investigated by a new method for the determination of the size and number of conducting tracheid lumina and pit membrane pores which involves the measurement of gaseous permeability at various mean pressures. Both earlywood and latewood tracheids (83% of the total) were found to be conducting in solvent-dried wood, but in air-dried wood only latewood tracheids (32% of the total) were conducting. In solvent-dried wood there were on average 27,000 pit membrane pores per conducting tracheid compared with only 600 in air-dried wood. In both, the average pit membrane pore radius was about 0.1 m.Liquid permeabilities have been predicted from the calculated radii and numbers. The liquid permeability of solvent-dried wood was 31 times greater than that of air-dried wood in which the lumina were responsible for 13% of the total resistance to flow. The lumina were responsible for 39% of the resistance in solvent-dried wood and it is suggested that in first-formed earlywood the lumina may cause more than half the total resistance.A new method is described for the cleaning of direct carbon replicas of wood. In this the cellulose is removed by cellulase instead of sulphuric acid, and no wax backing is required. This provides much cleaner replicas.     The relationships between bending properties, compressive strength, tracheid length, microfibril angle, and ring characteristics of 20-year-old Taiwania (Taiwania cryptomerioides Hay.) trees were examined. The trees came from different thinning and pruning treatments, but the practices showed no significant effect on the investigated properties. The results showed that based on comparison with the literature, plantation-grown immature Taiwania have noticeably lower average strength properties than mature trees of the same species. Wood density and bending and compressive strengths were not related to either tracheid length or microfibril angle in young Taiwania. There were positive relationships between bending strength and compressive strength. The wood density, ring width, earlywood width, earlywood density, and latewood percentage were the most important predictors of strength by simple linear regressions. The wood density and ring width/earlywood width may be considered as indicators for assessing the bending strength, while wood density and latewood percentage were the best predictors of compressive strength by multiple linear regressions.  相似文献

    The ring characteristics and screw withdrawal resistance (SWR) of naturally regenerated Taiwan yellow cypress (Chamaecyparis obtusa var. formosana) trees were explored. Significant differences in average ring width (RW), earlywood width, latewood width, ring density (RD), earlywood density (ED), latewood density (LD), highest density (Dmax), lowest density (Dmin), latewood percentage (LWP), and SWR were observed between trees, rings (SWR excluded), and tree height positions. The RW components in the radial direction increased from the pith outward to about the 3rd to 5th ring and then decreased to about the 25th ring; it was almost constantly sustained toward the bark side. The RD in the radial direction slowly decreased from the pith outward to the bark side. Average ring width and ring density were significantly affected by the various tree growth rates, radial ring numbers, and tree height positions. ED, LD, Dmax, Dmin, and LWP were the most important factors determining the overall RD. RW did not correlate with tree RD. SWR is correlated with ED, RD, Dmin, LWP, and intra-ring density variation (IDV). Thus, the SWR can be used to predict wood density and in nondestructive evaluation of a living tree.  相似文献

    Summary A study has been made of the histology and ultrastructure of opposite wood in Larix laricina, Picea rubens, and Pinus resinosa. The width of the growth rings varied considerably, in one case from 0.1–1.0 mm, with the wide rings containing a much higher proportion of latewood than the narrow ones. The earlywood tracheids were square in outline and more regularly arranged than in normal wood. In the latewood they were sometimes irregular and distorted. The S3 layer in the tracheids was 0.2 m thick in the earlywood and 0.4–0.8 m in the latewood, as compared to a thickness in normal wood of 0.1–0.2 m in both zones. The S3 was often buckled in the latewood and was terminated towards the lumen by a spiral thickening. The cell wall structure of the tracheid pit border was described. Normal coniferous wood might be regarded as an intermediate between opposite wood and compression wood.This paper is dedicated to Dean Edwin C. Jahn in honor of his 70th birthday.  相似文献
