  • 1. An expansion of no‐take marine reserve zones of Australia's 348 000 km2 Great Barrier Reef (GBR) Marine Park from 4.6% to 33.4% of the park area is proposed in 2004. However, limited evidence currently exists that no‐take marine reserves on the GBR have increased abundance of reef fish targeted by fisheries. This study provides such evidence for inshore reefs of the GBR.
  • 2. Underwater visual surveys were used to estimate the effect of no‐take reserves on abundance of species targeted by hook‐and‐line fisheries around the Palm, Whitsunday and Keppel Islands, spanning 600 km of the length of the GBR. The reserves had been zoned ‘no fishing’ for 14 yr.
  • 3. Densities of Plectropomus spp. and Lutjanus carponotatus, both targeted by fisheries, were much higher in protected zones than fished zones in two of the three island groups. Plectropomus spp. were 3.6 and 2.3 times more abundant in protected than fished zones of the Palm and Whitsunday island groups. L. carponotatus were 2.3 and 2.2 times more abundant in protected zones than fished zones of the Whitsunday and Keppel island groups.
  • 4. The biomasses of Plectropomus spp. and L. carponotatus were significantly greater (3.9 and 2.6 times respectively) in the protected zones than fished zones at all three island groups.
  • 5. Legal minimum sizes of Plectropomus spp. and L. carponotatus are ?38 cm and 25 cm TL respectively. There were significantly higher densities and biomasses of Plectropomus spp. >35 cm TL (density: 3.8 times; biomass: 5.1 times) and L. carponotatus >25 cm TL (density: 4.2 times; biomass: 5.3 times) in protected zones than fished zones at all three island groups.
  • 6. No significant difference in abundance between protected and fished zones was found for two species not captured by fisheries (Siganus doliatus and Chaetodon aureofasciatus), and there were no significant differences in benthic characteristics between protected and fished zones.
  • 7. Results suggest that no‐take marine reserves have increased stock biomass of targeted fish species on inshore GBR reefs.

Abstract  Common coral trout, Plectropomus leopardus Lacepède, crimson snapper, Lutjanus erythropterus Bloch, saddletail snapper, Lutjanus malabaricus (Bloch & Schneider), red emperor, Lutjanus sebae (Cuvier), redthroat emperor, Lethrinus miniatus (Schneider) and grass emperor, Lethrinus laticaudis Alleyne & Macleay, were tagged to determine the effects of barotrauma relief procedures (weighted shot-line release and venting using a hollow needle) and other factors on survival. Release condition was the most significant factor affecting the subsequent recapture rate of all species. Capture depth was significant in all species apart from L. malabaricus and L. miniatus , the general trend being reduced recapture probability with increasing capture depth. Recapture rates of fish hooked in either the lip or mouth were generally significantly higher than for those hooked in the throat or gut. Statistically significant benefit from treating fish for barotrauma was found in only L. malabaricus , but the lack of any negative effects of treating fish indicated that the practices of venting and shot-lining should not be discouraged by fisheries managers for these species.  相似文献

Two size groups (0.5 and 3 kg) of Atlantic salmon, Salmo salar L., were stressed by netting and transport from sea cages into land-based tanks. Handling lasted for 1 h. Before onset of stress, basal concentrations of haematocrit and haemoglobin, plasma cortisol and glucose, and liver and muscle glycogen were measured. All levels were within ranges reported for salmon. After handling and at chosen time intervals during recovery, samples were taken to judge the impact of handling and whether secondary changes in carbohydrate metabolism were related of fish size. A low cortisol peak indicated a mild stress reaction after handling independent to fish size. Plasma glucose peaked as cortisol declined, and returned to basal levels within 48 h. Liver glycogen seemed to be the main source of plasma glucose. No changes were measured in muscle glycogen concentrations. The results indicate a high tolerance to handling stress in Atlantic salmon independent of fish size.  相似文献

We compared the development and fatty acid content of the harpacticoid copepods Tachidius discipes and Tisbe sp. fed with different microalgal species (Dunaliella tertiolecta, Rhodomonas sp., Phaeodactylum tricornutum, Isochrysis galbana and a concentrate of Pavlova sp.), which differed in cell size and fatty acid composition. Tisbe could develop in 11 days with every alga to the same average stage, whereas Tachidius developed poorly when fed with Isochrysis and Dunaliella. Feeding with Phaeodactylum resulted in a fast development of both copepods at low algal concentrations. However, reproduction was higher with Rhodomonas as food than with the other algae. Fatty acid compositions of copepods were influenced by their food source, but both were able to convert docosahexaenoic acid (DHA) and eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA) from precursors. Tachidius fed with Rhodomonas or Phaeodactylum was closest to the DHA/EPA/arachidonic acid (ARA) ratio of 10 : 5 : 1 considered optimal for some marine fish larvae. Tachidius showed similar development and reproduction capacity as Tisbe, but requested higher absolute fatty acid contents in the diet. Tisbe was superior in the utilization of bacteria as additional food source and the bioconversion of precursor fatty acids. Phaeodactylum and Rhodomonas are recommendable food sources for both copepod species, but Phaeodactylum is more easily cultured.  相似文献

ABSTRACT:   In order to verify methods for minimizing waste output of phosphorus (P) into the water and preserve an adequate growth rate in rainbow trout, a succession of two feeding trials were performed employing three test diets that were formulated with a low proportion of fish meal (FM), low-P ingredients (defatted soybean meal, corn gluten meal, feather meal, and blood meal), and varying levels of monocalcium phosphate (MCP) as a P supplement (0, 0.5 and 1% of diet which represent 0, 1 and 2 mg/g of available P, respectively). Total P concentrations achieved were 6.2, 8.7 and 9.6 mg/g, respectively. A control diet was formulated with FM as the main protein source and without MCP (total P content was 17.0 mg/g). Diets were fed until apparent satiation to duplicate groups of 50 (1.5 g) and 15 fish (147.8 g) during 24 and 14 weeks, respectively. In both cases, the lowest growth was observed in fish fed the basal diet without MCP. The test diet supplemented with 0.5% MCP provided growth and feed performance comparable to that obtained in fish fed the control diet. These results suggest that diets formulated with low-P ingredients should be supplemented with an adequate amount of P in order to meet the fish requirements and reduced diet-related P loading.  相似文献
