Errare humanum est

In the erratum published in the issue of 13 February (p. 656), Tables 1 and 2 from the report "Mutagenicity of fly ash particles in Paramecium" by J. Smith-Sonneborn et al. (9 Jan., p. 180) were printed incorrectly. Significance lines missing in the original tables were also missing in the erratum. With determination, we again reprint the tables as they should have appeared (Table 1 above, Table 2 at right).

In the report "Aborginal Indian residence patterns preserved in censuses and allotments" by John H. Moore (11 Jan., p. 201), Table 1 was inadvertently omitted: Table 1. Distances from mothers' to married children's allotments for first-generation descendents of Sand Creek family heads. [See table in the PDF file].

Table 2 (p. 1127) of the report "Rules for alpha-helix termination by glycine" by R. Aurora et al. (20 May, p. 1126) was incorrectly printed. The corrected table appears below. In the same report, the second sentence of reference 36 should not have appeared. [See table in the PDF file].

In the report "Long-term synaptic potentiation in the superior cervical ganglion" by T. H. Brown and D. A. McAfee (12 March, p. 1411), equation 2 and the following lines should read: [See equation in the PDF] where [See equation in the PDF] is the early, rapidly decaying component and [See equation in the PDF] is the slowly decaying, long-term component.     

凹土基悬浮滤料制备与性能研究

[目的]研究凹土基悬浮滤料的制备方法与性能特点。[方法]利用凹土、玻璃微珠、粉煤灰漂珠复配制备凹土基悬浮滤料,并测定滤料对废水CODCr及NH+4-N的处理效果。[结果]凹土、玻璃微珠、粉煤灰漂珠适宜添加重量比为5∶3∶3;最佳烧结温度为900℃;制得的滤料密度在0.173~0.921 g/cm3。废水处理试验结果表明,对CODCr处理效果可达95.0%,对NH+4-N处理效果可达95.6%。[结论]制备的凹土基悬浮滤料性能良好,可用于废水的处理。     

Kin selection: its components

Change in gene frequency under kin selection is the sum of two components, namely, [See equation in the PDF file], a change in gene frequency caused by individual selection, and [See equation in the PDF file], a change caused by group selection. For the evolution of altruistic traits by kin selection, [See equation in the PDF file] is always negative-that is, individual selection operates against altruism-and [See equation in the PDF file] is always positive, so that selection between groups favors altruism. Hamilton's rule specifies the conditions under which [See equation in the PDF file]-that is, the conditions necessary for intergroup selection to override individual selection.

In the report "Site-specific nick in the T-DNA border sequence as a result of Agrobacterium vir gene expression" by K. Wang et al. (30 Jan., p. 587), figure 2A on page 588 should have shown a 3.2-kilobase band in lane b that was not visible. Also, 1.9-kilobase bands in lane c and g were not visible. A Print that shows the bands in figure 2, A and B, appears below. In addition, reference 24 should have been to J. L. Slightom, L. Jouanin, F. Leach, R. F. Drong, D. Tepfer, EMBO J. 4, 3069 (1985). Erratum

In the article "Bloch prepares NSF for lean years" by John Walsh (News & Comment, 25 Apr., p. 440), the labels for "Coordinated research" and "Large projects" were inadvertently reversed in a chart depicting the breakdown of the fiscal year 1986 National Science Foundation budget. Coordinated research accounts for 14% of total research, and large projects account for 20%. A corrected chart is shown below. [See Chart in Source PDF].

The structure of the c60 molecule: x-ray crystal structure determination of a twin at 110 k

Single-crystal x-ray diffraction methods were used to determine the crystal and molecular structure of C(60) buckminsterfullerene. At 110 kelvin C(60) is cubic, apparent Laue symmetry m3m, but it exhibits noncrystallographic systematic extinctions indicative of a twin in which I(hkl) and I(khl) are superimposed. In fact, C(60) crystallizes with four molecules in space group [See equation in the PDF file] of the cubic system (Laue symmetry m3) with lattice constant a = 14.052(5) angstroms (A) at 110 kelvin. The twin components are equal. A given component, which has crystallographically imposed symmetry [See equation in the PDF file] displays an ordered structure of a truncated icosahedron. The five independent C=C bonds that join C(6) rings average 1.355(9) A; the ten independent C-C bonds that join C(6) and C(5) rings average 1.467(21) A. The mean atom-to-atom diameter of the C(60) molecule is 7.065(3) A. The molecules are very tightly packed in the crystal structure, with intermolecular C...C distances as short as 3.131(7) A.     

Site of conversion of desoxycorticosterone acetate to progestin

The conversion of DCA to progestin in vivo, which has been shown in the case of the monkey (4) and now the rat, indicates one possible mechanism by which progestin may occur in the male. In addition, these studies also show that, at least in the rodent, the adrenals and the kidneys are the sites of this conversion. Investigations on the conversion of DCA to progestin in other species, as well as studies on the release See PDF for Table of progestin by tissue slices incubated with or without DCA, are currently in progress.
