Gonadal development and steroidogenesis in teleosts is regulated by two gonadotropic hormones; luteinizing hormone (LH) and
follicle-stimulating hormone (FSH). Earlier studies in tilapia have shown that FSH-β and LH-β appear by 14 days after hatching
(dah), results from the current study corroborate with these previous reports in tilapia. Here we demonstrate the appearance
of LH in pituitary between 14 and 20 dah. In addition to this the present study primarily focuses on any possible differences
in appearance of LH-β and FSH-β immunoreactivity between XX and XY population of Nile tilapia. LH immunoreactivity was found
to be lower in pituitary of XX fish when compared to XY fish. The development of FSH-β immunoreactivity in pituitary of the
Nile tilapia is also presented. Overall, it remains to be established what significance these findings on the appearance of
gonadotropins hold for sex differentiation in tilapia.

The effect of natural feed, artificial feed, and artificial feed with hormone 17 alpha-methyltestosterone on gill and liver integrity, parasite prevalence and performance parameters during the masculinization phase of Nile tilapia Oreochromis niloticus were evaluated. The experiment consisted of the three feeding strategies in triplicate. Water parameters, histopathological, parasitological and performance analyses were performed on day 7, 14, 28 and 60. Both artificial feeds (with and without hormone) were harmful to the hepatic and branchial integrity. The most significant change in liver was lipid degeneration, while in gills a significantly higher lamellar edema was observed when compared to fish that received the natural feed. Fish fed with the artificial diet (with and without hormone) showed a high prevalence (p < 0.05) of trichodinids and Cryptobia, while fish that received natural feed showed no parasites after 28 days of study. Fries that received diet with hormone experienced damage to their health, which decreased the survival of this group. The anabolic effect of this molecule, however, improved significantly (p < 0.05) their productive performance. Despite the absence of deleterious effects to fish health, the use of natural feed has a high risk of introducing predators. Introduction of odonate larvae drastically affected the survival of this group at the end of the study. All feeding strategies investigated have positive and negative effects that were discussed in the present study. 相似文献

Effect of dietary protein level on the reproductive performance of Nile tilapia, Oreochromis niloticus (L.) 总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
The effects of five dietary protein levels (25%, 30%, 35%, 40% and 45%) on the individual spawning frequency and the egg production of 135 tagged female Nile tilapia, Oreochromis niloticus (L.), were studied from 8 May to 19 November 1996 in outdoor concrete tanks. Virtually identical spawning patterns were found in all treatments, but there was a great deal of variation in the frequency of spawning and egg production. Overall, individual spawning frequency varied from one to 14 and individual egg production from 31 to 2828 eggs per spawning. The average number of spawnings and average number of eggs per spawning for fish receiving dietary protein levels of 25%, 30%, 35%, 40% and 45% were 8.0 ±1.6, 8.4 ± 2.2, 8.5 ± 2.7, 8.4 ± 2.5 and 9.4 ± 2.1 spawnings, and 1167 ± 305, 1082 ± 410, 1288 ± 324, 1145 ± 389 and 1328 ± 311 eggs per spawning, respectively. Fish receiving 45% dietary protein spawned more frequently than fish receiving 25% dietary protein. The total number of eggs produced per female was significantly higher for females fed 45% protein feed than females receiving 25% and 30% protein feeds. No definite trend was found in the number of eggs produced per spawning and the number of eggs produced per gram in females fed at different protein levels. Based on weekly checking, the time interval between spawnings varied from 7 to 77 days, and mean spawning intervals ranged from 15.8 to 17.1 days. Sixty per cent of females spawned after an interval 14 days, 15% after 21 days, 13.6% after 7 days, 7.2% after 28 days, 1.8% after 35 days and 1.0% after 42 days, and the time interval was 49-77 days for the rest of the females (1.5%). In all treatments, maximum spawning activity was recorded from May to August, and thereafter, it gradually decreased and no spawning females were found in November. 相似文献

This study evaluated the use of the prebiotic Active-MOS® (mannanoligosaccharides—Biorigin®) and two probiotics: PAS-TR® (Bacillus subtilis and Bacillus cereus var. toyoi—Imeve®) and Bioplus 2BC® (1.6 × 1010 UFC g?1 de Bacillus subtilis and 1.6 × 1010 UFC g?1 Bacillus licheniformis—Christian Hansen®) tested separately and together, in the diet of Nile tilapia post-larvae during the sex reversal phase. The experiment was conducted in two stages: (i) a total of 2160 3-day-old post-larvae (PL) (10.39 ± 0.85 mm and 12.28 ± 3.15 mg) were used and distributed in 24 tanks of 40 L each (3.0 PL L?1). Growth performance, chemical analysis of carcass, bacterial recovery, and histomorphometry of intestinal villi were evaluated; (ii) 240 tilapia (4.28 ± 0.19 cm and 1.19 ± 0.09 g) from the previous experiment were used and stocked at 10 PL per aquarium. The parameters evaluated were survival and relative protection level after bacterial challenge against Aeromonas hydrophila. Six treatments with four replications in a completely randomized design were used for both experimental stages. Additives in the diet of tilapia post-larvae did not determine significant differences in growth, survival, microbiological, or histomorphometric parameters in this study. Nevertheless, after the experimental infection, advantages on the use of the additives were observed in terms of higher relative protection levels (38.10%) and relative percent survival in fish receiving Active-MOS® + Bioplus 2BC®. Therefore, we recommend the use of synbiotic (Active-MOS® + Bioplus 2BC®) in the farming of Nile tilapia PL with recurrent outbreaks of bacterial diseases during the sex reversal phase. 相似文献

This study compared the spawning performance of four crosses between the salt‐tolerant tilapia Oreochromis spilurus and the fast‐growing genetically improved farmed tilapia (GIFT) strain of the Nile tilapia Oreochromis niloticus: (1) O. spilurus♀×O. spilurus♂ (SS); (2) Nile ♀× Nile ♂ (NN); (3) Nile ♀×O. spilurus♂ (NS) and (4) O. spilurus♀× Nile ♂ (SN). In each cross, males and females having mean weights of 157 and 115 g, respectively were stocked in 0.43 m3 tanks at a male to female ratio of 1:3. Seeds (unhatched eggs, yolk‐sac fry and free swimming fry) were harvested biweekly for 127 days. Viable spawns resulted from all crosses. The NN cross produced the highest total seeds tank?1 (2890), seeds (kg female)?1 day?1 (48.3), seeds m?2 day?1 (23.3) and seeds female?1 day?1 (7.9), followed by the SS and SN crosses. The NS cross had the lowest fecundity. Lower spawning parameters in the NS and SN crosses may be attributed to the lower social compatibility between the males and females compared with that of the pure parents. The survival and growth of the offspring from the four crosses will be compared in seawater (37–40 g L?1) to assess whether hybrid vigor was produced. 相似文献

Haematological response and growth performance over 150 days, and resistance to a low-temperature stress of Nile tilapia fed diets with increasing folic acid (FA) levels were evaluated. The experiment was conducted in a completely randomized design with eight FA levels (0.0, 0.5, 1.0, 2.0, 3.0, 4.0, 5.0 and 6.0 mg kg−1 feed) supplemented in purified diets (32.0% CP and 13 398 kj DE kg−1 ). One hundred and ninety-two fingerlings were randomly assigned to 32 net cages distributed in eight 1000 L aquaria with a physical and biological filter and a temperature control system (26.0 ± 1.0 °C). For cold-induced stress, fish were transferred to 24 30 L-aquaria with individual biofilters and aeration. The water temperature was gradually reduced until it reached 13 °C. Haematological parameters evaluated before and after cold stress were total erythrocytes and leucocytes count, differential leucocyte, haemoglobin, haematocrit, total plasmatic protein and haematometric indices. Growth performance parameters were mean weight gain, feed conversion ratio and survival. Dietary FA supplementation did not influence erythropoiesis under normal temperature conditions; cold stress impaired erythropoiesis, causing hypochromic microcytic anaemia and leucopoiesis, and also neutrophilia. Growth performance is influenced by folate and supplementation between 0.5 and 1.0 mg FA kg−1 diet, which makes up for nutritional demands, guaranteeing production and health under appropriate temperature conditions. 相似文献

A 548 bp partial cDNA fragment of 17β-hydroxysteroid dehydrogenase (17β-HSD1) was obtained by RT-PCR from the ovary of Nile Tilapia. This study evaluated the effect of two bacteria, Bacillus amyloliquefaciens and the dairy yogurt (DY) Lactobacillus sp., on improving the growth performance, feed conversion ratio (FCR) and some immunological and haematological parameters. Nile tilapia (19.1 g) were stocked in 0.42 m3 tanks at 67 fish m?3 and fed with two probiotic‐incorporated diets and a control diet for 99 days, followed by a normal diet for another 61 days. At the end of the probiotic feeding, the mean weight, FCR and production rate showed no significant difference among the treatments. However, after 61 days of feeding of the normal diet, the B. amyloliquefaciens fish showed significantly superior growth and better FCR than the control. The DY group had the lowest growth and the poorest FCR. Significantly higher serum lysozyme activity, head‐kidney superoxide dismutase, total immunoglobulin and serum bacterial agglutination titres were recorded in the probiotic groups than the control. Haematological parameters showed no difference between treatments. The B. amyloliquefaciens fed fish showed that the gut microflora was dominated by B. amyloliquefaciens even after the withdrawal of the probiotic. On the contrary, the probiotic bacterial species isolated from the dairy yoghurt did not persist longer in the gut. These results indicate the beneficial effect of administering the bacteria isolated from fish gut microflora, B. amyloliquefaciens, in improving growth, FCR and immunological parameters. The high persistence of B. amyloliquefaciens indicates that the probiotic colonization in the gut is essential for the best responses and economics. 相似文献

This study was to assess effects of the pretreatment in all‐plant based diets with microbial phytase on phosphorous utilization and growth performance of Nile tilapia (Oreochromis niloticus). Pretreatment trials were conducted using phytase at graded doses to determine the optimal dose of phytase. Available phosphorus (P) levels increased significantly with the increased doses of phytase and the dose of 1000 U kg?1 was most efficient. Based on the pretreatment trials, plant based diets for Nile tilapia were formulated by pretreating with phytase at 1000 U kg?1. Experimental diets were supplemented with graded levels of mono calcium phosphate (MCP) at 25, 18.75, 12.5, 6.25 and 0 g kg ?1 diet. In addition, there were three controls: one phytase control, one inorganic P control and one pretreatment control. The results showed that diets pretreated with phytase gave better growth performance, feed conversion ratio and protein efficiency ratio of Nile tilapia compared with the phytase control diet and pretreatment control diet (P < 0.05). There were no significant differences in growth performance of Nile tilapia between the inorganic control diet and phytase pretreated diets supplemented with MCP at 25, 18.75 and 12.5 g kg?1 (P > 0.05), which resulted in significantly better performance than those at 6.25 and 0 g kg?1 (P < 0.05). Dietary interaction effects of phytase were observed for phosphorus retention efficiency and phosphorus load. Apparent digestibility coefficient of P (ADCp) was improved significantly by phytase pretreatment (P < 0.05). No significant difference was detected on ADC of crude protein among all experimental diets (P > 0.05). 相似文献

In an attempt to better understand and characterize the variability in the female reproduction of individual Thai‐Chitralada strains of Nile tilapia, Oreochromis niloticus (L.), tagged mature females (n=68) from a single population were monitored in a hapa‐in‐pond system over a 12‐month experimental period. Spawn female−1, eggs female−1 day−1, eggs kg female−1 day−1, day spawn−1 and weight (g) at first spawning of individual females were determined from the regular weekly sampling of weight (g) and eggs per spawn. For analysis, the females were grouped into two, high spawning (HSF) and low spawning frequency (LSF) classes based on their spawning frequency (SF) record. Moreover, nested under these two classes were two groups each based on growth rate, i.e., high frequency – large size (HL), high frequency – small size (HS), low frequency – large size (LL) and low frequency – small size (LS). There was no difference in eggs spawn−1 among all females. The HSF group produced 68% and 361% more eggs female−1 day−1 than the population mean and LSF group respectively. Eggs female−1 day−1 and spawn female−1 remained high in the HSF group and low in the LSF group throughout the 12‐month experimental period. This suggests that individual female spawning activity is consistent within a population in a common environment. The inter‐spawn interval increased with age in all four groups, and day spawn−1 was shorter by 130% in HSF females compared with day spawn−1 in LSF. The HSF group also spawned more successively (≥3), while the LSF group of females had fewer successive spawns (≤2). Body weight (g) had no influence on the number of eggs produced. The study indicates that separating frequently spawning females could be used as an important strategy to improve commercial seed production of Nile tilapia. 相似文献

Reducing feed cost has been a major issue in fish nutrition. Mixed protein schedules have been proposed as one of the methods successfully tested in many fish species to reduce feed cost. Meanwhile, the effect of dietary choline and betaine supplementation on fish performance was assessed. The aim of the present study was to investigate the effect of mixed protein schedules, combined with choline and betaine, on Nile tilapia performance. This experiment was conducted in a (4 × 3) factorial arrangement of treatments. Four mixed protein schedules were examined, in the presence of choline 0.3% and/or betaine 0.5%. The four mixed protein schedules were achieved by alternating diet (A; 31%CP) and diet (B; 24%CP) as follows: (6 days‐A), (5 days‐A/1 day‐B), (4 days‐A/2 days‐B) and (3 days‐A/3 days‐B). The results indicated that in the presence of betaine 0.5% and choline 0.3%, the optimal mixed protein schedule for tilapia was (3A/3B). Fish fed on the 4A/2B or 3A/3B schedules utilized protein more efficiently than fish fed on the (6A) schedule. Fish fed diets supplemented with betaine (b) only showed the highest energy retention. Growth performance of two Oreochromis niloticus strains, Chitralada and Red‐Stirling, their reciprocal crossbred and the Israeli tetra‐hybrid ND‐56 were assessed in net cages under on‐farming conditions. Throughout 268 days of grow‐out, the strains were weighed monthly and mortality, feed consumption and water quality were recorded. Ten rigid net cages (1.5 × 1.5 × 1.7 m) immersed in a 10 ha reservoir were linearly arranged near the reservoir outlet following a completely randomized design with two replicates for each treatment (strain). Each cage was stocked with 459 fish (120 fish m?3) and fed twice daily to apparent satiation with a commercial tilapia diet following the recommended feeding program. The final mean weights were higher for Chitralada (557.20 g) and the reciprocal crossbreds (522.95, 496.40 g) than those of Red‐Stirling (421.90 g). All treatments outperformed the ND‐56 tetra hybrid. Daily growth showed statistical differences between Chitralada (2.04 g) and Red‐Stirling (1.52 g) but they were statistically the same when compared with the reciprocal crossbreds (1.90, 1.80 g). The relative growth ratios showed the same trend observed in the results for daily growth. The mean survival rate was 98%. The overall growth rate showed that crossbred performed as well as the parental lines. All crossbred progeny presented red colouration with variable pattern of black marks corroborating the dominant inheritance of the red trait in Red‐Stirling strain. 相似文献

Fish biologists have shown little interest in near-infrared (NIR) sensitivity because water absorbs light in the red and near-infrared
and because downward irradiance in clear ocean water is mostly blue light. In recent years, however, Nile tilapia Oreochromis niloticus was shown to be NIR sensitive by behavioral techniques. This study confirmed NIR sensitivity in the common carp Cyprinus carpio and Nile tilapia by using a more sensitive technique than a behavioral one. Cardiac conditioning experiments showed that
both fishes are sensitive to 865 nm NIR. The conditioned response to 865 nm NIR was observed in Nile tilapia when the eyes
were not covered and the pineal window was covered, but not when the same fish had its eyes covered and the pineal window
exposed to the NIR. The eyes are thus, the NIR-sensitive organs in Nile tilapia. To identify the NIR photoreceptor, the retina
was examined by histology. The retina exposed to 865 nm NIR showed incomplete dark adaptation with rods exposed from retinal
epithelial pigment. Though the reaction to NIR seemed to be mediated mainly by the red cone, the involvement of the rod could

A 119-day experiment was conducted to investigate the effects of feeding rate and reproductive performance of stunted (S) and non-stunted or normal (N) Nile tilapia (Oreochromis niloticus). Both the groups were reared in tanks re-circulated with bio-filtered water and fed with floating pellets (30% crude protein) twice daily. Seed were harvested weekly from the mouths of incubating females. The study showed that early stunting with subsequent high feeding rate can improve both growth and reproductive output in female Nile tilapia. Broodfish type and feeding rate showed significant (P < 0.05) effects on both the frequency of spawning and the seed output. In general, seed output from normal broodfish increased linearly over the experimental period at all the feeding rates. However, seed output from stunted broodfish showed a linear increment for 3% feeding rate, exponential increment for 2% but quadratic for 1% showing decline after 10th week of the trial period. Results also showed that trends of seed output from stunted broodfish increased linearly with the increase in feeding rate showing that optimum rate could be higher than 3%. While from normal group the relationship was quadratic; increasing from 1%, peaked at 2% and declined at 3% feeding rate. Final GSI of the stunted females was significantly (P < 0.05) higher than that of normal females. The GSI of stunted fish showed a decreasing trend with the increased feeding rate. Both the broodstock groups fed at 1% biomass grew linearly whereas at 2 and 3%, they grew exponentially. As compared to the normal, stunted broodfish had significantly (P < 0.05) higher fat content in viscera although similar levels were in carcass and ovary. Carcass fat content was significantly (P < 0.05) lower in fish fed at 1% biomass but significantly (P < 0.05) higher in the ovary and viscera of fish fed at 3% biomass. This study shows that tilapia hatchery operators could manipulate the seed production according to the seasonal demand by using appropriate broodstock stunting and feeding strategies. 相似文献

This study was conducted to investigate the effect of stocking density (125 or 200 fish m?3) on the growth performance of three strains of the Nile tilapia, Oreochromis niloticus: the non‐improved strain (NS), the genetically improved farmed tilapia (GIFT) and the Freshwater Aquaculture Center selected tilapia known as the FaST selected line (SL). Each strain and density combination was triplicated in 0.42 m3 fibreglass tanks within a re‐circulating water system. Water temperature was maintained at 29.0±1.0°C. Large Nile tilapia having a mean body weight of 100–110 g were stocked in each tank and hand‐fed four times daily with commercial tilapia pellets (35% protein) for 104 days. Results showed that at the two stocking densities, the GIFT and SL strains showed a significantly higher (P<0.05) mean weight (MWT), daily growth rate (DGR), specific growth rate (SGR), feed conversion ratio (FCR) and gross yield (GY) than the NS. In all three strains, growth performance was negatively affected by stocking density. The lower density (125 fish m?3) treatments had significantly higher MWT, DGR and SGR than the higher density one (200 fish m?3). However, higher FCR and GY were observed at the higher density. Survival rates were high in all treatments and were not affected by strain or density. In general, the SL strain had better growth parameters than the GIFT strain. The findings of this study demonstrated the superior growth performance of the improved strains at both densities compared with the NS. The higher density (200 fish m?3) could be more profitable for the tilapia farms in Kuwait than the lower density of (125 fish m?3) in terms of reduced land cost and facilities, demand on the limited low‐salinity underground water and manpower. 相似文献

In order to assess the effect of dietary pyridoxine supplementation on the growth performance of Nile tilapia and the haematological response under heat stress, 192 fingerlings (8.41 ± 0.22 g) were randomly distributed into eight tanks and fed practical diets supplemented with increasing levels of pyridoxine (0.0; 5.0; 10.0 and 20.0 mg of pyridoxal HCl kg?1 diet) for 91 days. The fish were then weighed and the diet was quantified to determine the growth performance [weight gain (WG), feed intake, feed conversion ratio, protein efficiency rate, protein retention (PR) and survival percentage]. Haematological analyses (red blood cell count, haematocrit, haemoglobin, total leucocyte and differentiation, mean corpuscular volume, mean corpuscular haemoglobin concentration, albumin, globulin and albumin/globulin ratio) were carried out and then 32 fish were transferred and subjected to heat stress (32 °C) for 3 days, after which the haematological parameters were analysed. The fish fed the unsupplemented diet showed the lowest WG and PR. For the normal growth and health of the Nile tilapia, the Pyridoxine requirement in a practical diet is 10.0 mg of pyridoxine HCl kg?1. 相似文献
