Postweaning growth, sexual development, libido, and carcass data were collected from two consecutive calf crops using 31 Brahman x Angus (B x A), 41 Senepol x Angus (S x A), and 38 Tuli x Angus (T x A) F1 bulls. Following weaning (by mid-September) and preconditioning, at the start of the study (late September) bulls were fed concentrate (three times each week at a rate equivalent to 4.5 kg/d) on bahiagrass pasture for approximately 250 d. At the start of the study and at 28-d intervals, BW, hip height, and scrotal circumference (SC) were measured. Concurrently at 28-d intervals, when the SC of a bull was > or = 23 cm, semen collection was attempted using electroejaculation. Ejaculates were evaluated for presence of first spermatozoa (FS), 50 x 10(6) sperm with at least 10% motility (PU), and 500 x 10(6) sperm with at least 50% motility (PP). After all bulls reached PP they were subjected to two libido tests. Carcass data were collected on all bulls (n = 110) and Warner-Bratzler shear (WBS) force values were assessed on a subset (n = 80). For both years, B x A bulls were heavier (P < 0.05) and taller (P < 0.05) than S x A and T x A bulls at the start and end of the study. However, breed type did not influence (P > 0.10) gain in BW or hip height during the study. Scrotal circumference of T x A bulls was larger (P < 0.05) than that of B x A or S x A bulls at the start of the study, but there was no effect (P > 0.10) of breed type by the end of the study. At PU and PP, B x A bulls were older (P < 0.05), heavier (P < 0.05), and taller (P < 0.05) and had larger (P < 0.05) SC than S x A and T x A bulls. Tuli x Angus bulls were younger (P < 0.05) than S x A bulls at PU and PP but had similar SC. Libido scores tended (P < 0.10) to be lower for B x A than for S x A and T x A bulls. Breed type affected (P < 0.05) carcass traits; B x A bulls had the heaviest (P < 0.05) hot carcass weight, greatest (P < 0.05) dressing percentage, larger (P < 0.05) longissimus muscle area than S x A bulls, and higher (P < 0.05) USDA yield grade than T x A bulls but greatest (P < 0.05) WBS force values. Breed type did not affect (P > 0.10) USDA quality grade. In conclusion, tropically adapted F1 bulls produced from Senepol (Bos taurus) and Tuli (Sanga) sires bred to Angus cows in Florida had lighter BW, shorter hip heights, and smaller carcasses than those from Brahman sires but reached puberty earlier and had higher libido scores and lower WBS force values.  相似文献

Semen samples were obtained from budgerigars by applying gentle pressure to both sides of the cloaca. The semen appeared to be stored in the seminal glomera, two structures on either side of the proctodeum. These structures have been described before in Passeriformes. The spermatozoon in budgerigars is similar to the spermatozoon of the domestic fowl, but differs from the spermatozoon of Passeriformes.  相似文献

Six Belgian Blue bulls (double-muscled type) and six Friesian bulls were offered a fattening diet for 34 weeks. Plasma samples were obtained once a week and also every 20 min over a 24 h period, 7 weeks before slaughter. No differences were observed between the breeds in plasma glucose, urea and free amino nitrogen concentrations, while creatinine was significantly higher in the Belgian Blue bulls. Tri-iodothyronin, tetra-iodothyronin, insulin-like growth factor 1, insulin and testosterone concentrations were higher in the Holstein group. In contrast, the Belgian Blue bulls appeared to produce more growth hormone. The slaughter weight, carcass weight, dressing percentage and proportion of lean meat were significantly higher in the Belgian Blue group. The characteristics of muscle mass (carcass weight, dressing percentage and proportion of lean meat) were positively correlated with creatinine and with the total peak area or peak amplitude of growth hormone. The insulin concentration was positively correlated with the proportion of adipose tissue in the carcass and negatively correlated with the proportion of muscle. There were no correlations between the carcass characteristics and insulin-like growth factor 1 or testosterone. No further information was provided when the ratios of the hormones were correlated with carcass characteristics.  相似文献

A total of 436 young bulls from fifteen Western European breeds, including beef, dairy and local types from five countries, were studied to assess variability in live weight, live weight gain, body measurements and carcass traits. Animals were logged indoors, and fed a diet based on concentrate and straw offered ad libitum from 9 months of age to slaughter at 15 months of age. The weight, body length, height at withers and pelvis width, of the animals were recorded at 9, 12 and 15 months of age. After slaughter, 15 carcass variables were recorded, including carcass weight, EU classification scores, morphological measurements and dissection data. Data were analysed by GLM, regression and principal component analysis procedures.Significant differences were found between breeds for all variables studied, however, the body size measurements and the carcass traits were more useful to discriminate among cattle breeds, than either live weight or daily gain. With respect to the body size and carcass traits the studied breeds could be grouped as:
– Specialized beef breeds, comprising Piemontese, Asturiana de los Valles, Pirenaica, Limousin, South Devon, Charolais and Aberdeen Angus, all of which were characterized by high muscularity, wide pelvis and medium height and a low to medium level of fatness.
– Local and dairy breeds, comprising Jersey, Casina, Highland, Holstein and Danish Red, the latter two breeds were tall animals, while the former three breeds were small in size. In general the group was poorly muscled and tended to have a high or medium level of fat.
– Intermediate group, Avileña, Marchigiana and Simmental: these breeds were characterized by an intermediate muscle conformation and fatness level and were relatively tall.
This study provides a detailed assessment or a wide range of variables in the major breeds, and several minor breeds, that are used in breeding programmes across Europe and elsewhere, and will provide information that will be of use to define breeding strategies to meet the demands of the European beef market.  相似文献

Fibre type composition, activities of enzymes such as citrate synthase (CS), 3-hydroxyacyl coenzyme A dehydrogenase (HAD), lactate dehydrogenase (LDH), as well as glycogen, lactate and pH levels were analysed in muscle biopsies (m. gluteus medius) obtained after bullfighting from 10 young and 10 old bulls. No changes were seen in fibre type composition between groups, but the older bulls had higher HAD and LDH activities. Low glycogen concentrations and low pH values were found in both groups, but the lactate concentration after bullfighting was higher in the older group of bulls. The histochemical stain for glycogen revealed that type IIB fibres in both young and old bulls contained more glycogen than seen in type IIA and type I fibres. These results show that young and old bulls have similar muscle fibre type composition, but the metabolic capacity differs, with a higher glycolytic capacity and lactate production in older bulls. Furthermore, it seems that the physical and emotional stress in connection with a bullfight causes a marked depletion of glycogen, especially of type I and IIA fibres.  相似文献

Simmental and Hereford bulls were individually fed varying levels of the same diet to determine the effects of energy intake after weaning, degree of fatness, and short-term weight change on reproductive characteristics of yearling beef bulls. For 200 d (ending in May), 29 Simmentals were fed an average of 14.6, 19.2 or 23.8 Mcal and 27 Herefords were fed 13.4, 17.5 or 22.2 Mcal metabolizable energy per bull daily. Bulls then were adjusted to a roughage diet for 10 d before grazing brome pasture for 38 d (ending in June). Energy level did not affect motility or sperm morphology of semen collected with an artificial vagina in May and June. High energy levels were not detrimental to bull performance during a 30-min serving-capacity test in May or June. Backfat thickness was not related to semen characteristics or serving capacity. Amount of weight lost from May to June did not affect the semen quality or serving capacity of Herefords. Those Simmental bulls that had a more positive weight change from May to June had a more favorable change in semen quality from May to June (P less than .05) due to lower semen quality in May (P less than .05). The high level of energy was not detrimental to semen characteristics or serving capacity. Some of the Simmental bulls may have been underfed for maximum semen quality at the beginning of the pasture period. Within the normal range of energy fed to beef bulls from weaning to the beginning of the breeding season as yearlings, it may be more likely to underfeed breeds of large mature size than to overfeed British breeds.  相似文献

A key to maximising response to selection in pastoral cattle kept by groups such as the Sub-Saharan Maasai is an accurate selection of young bulls. A breeding objective was developed based on weight, reproductive rate (days to calving), temperament, tick resistance and trypanotolerance. Accuracy of selection was defined as the correlation between the breeding objective and various selection indices. Accuracy was evaluated assuming availability of information on a range of traits (those in objective plus scrotal circumference) from individuals, parents, grand-parents, half-sibs, progeny and genetic markers. Various scenarios that represent what could occur at the village level were tested. Just selecting on weight alone had an accuracy of 0.538. Additional measurements on the individual (including repeated measures) had a large effect on accuracy. Records on relatives were less helpful than expected. Genetic markers for traits which are difficult to measure (days to calving and trypanotolerance) were helpful for improving accuracy. However, they are unlikely to be used in the near future because of cost and availability. An additional output from this study is simple selection indices that could be implemented immediately at the village level.  相似文献

In order to test two extenders, and the effect of the addition of a surfactant and different freezing rates for cryopreservation of llama semen, the motility (MOT) and the integrity of acrosomes (NA) of 11 frozen ejaculates, collected with artificial vaginas from three llama males, were recorded. According to a 2 × 2 × 2 factorial design, the semen had been split and diluted comparatively with TRIS- and EDTA-extenders prepared, respectively, with and without 0.5% Equex STM and the samples frozen simultaneously 2 cm and 10 cm above the level of liquid Nitrogen. MOT of frozen-thawed semen was significantly better (p < 0.05) with TRIS-extender, although no difference for NA was recorded. The addition of surfactant as well as the compared freezing rates had no significant effect on MOT or NA. It was concluded that TRIS-extender may be promising for further fertility trials of cryopreserved semen, but centrifugation of prediluted semen would probably be necessary to get a minimum amount of sperm into the straws used as insemination doses.  相似文献

The objectives of this study were to estimate heritability for scrotal circumference (SC) and semen traits and their genetic correlations (rg) with birth weight (BRW). Semen traits were recorded for Line 1 Hereford bulls (n = 841), born in 1963 or from 1967 to 2000, that were selected for use at Fort Keogh (Miles City, MT) or for sale. Semen was collected by electroejaculation when bulls were a mean age of 446 d. Phenotypes were BRW, SC, ejaculate volume, subjective scores for ejaculate color, swirl, sperm concentration and motility, and percentages of sperm classified as normal and live or having abnormal heads, abnormal midpieces, proximal cytoplasmic droplets (primary abnormalities), bent tails, coiled tails, or distal cytoplasmic droplets (secondary abnormalities). Percentages of primary and secondary also were calculated. Data were analyzed using multiple-trait derivative-free REML. Models included fixed effects for contemporary group, age of dam, age of bull, inbreeding of the bull and his dam, and random animal and residual effects. Random maternal and permanent maternal environmental effects were also included in the model for BRW. Estimates of heritability for BRW, SC, semen color, volume, concentration, swirl, motility, and percentages of normal, live, abnormal heads, abnormal midpieces, proximal cytoplasmic droplets, bent tails, coiled tails, distal cytoplasmic droplets, and primary and secondary abnormalities were 0.34, 0.57, 0.15, 0.09, 0.16, 0.21, 0.22, 0.35, 0.22, 0.00 0.16, 0.37, 0.00 0.34 0.00, 0.30, and 0.33, respectively. Estimates of rg for SC with color, volume, concentration, swirl, motility, and percentages of live, normal, and primary and secondary abnormalities were 0.73, 0.20, 0.77, 0.40, 0.34, 0.63, 0.33, -0.36, and -0.45, respectively. Estimates of rg for BRW with SC, color, volume, concentration, swirl, motility, and percentages live, normal, and primary and secondary abnormalities were 0.28, 0.60, 0.08, 0.58, 0.44, 0.21, 0.34, 0.20, -0.02, and -0.16, respectively. If selection pressure was applied to increase SC, all of the phenotypes evaluated would be expected to improve. Predicted correlated responses in semen characteristics per genetic SD of selection applied to SC were 0.87 genetic SD or less. If selection pressure was applied to reduce BRW, the correlated responses would generally be smaller but antagonistic to improving all of the phenotypes evaluated. Predicted correlated responses in SC and semen characteristics per genetic SD of selection applied to BRW were less than 0.35 genetic SD.  相似文献

Bulls from a testing station, comprising 137 animals from 113 to 420 days of age, were inoculated twice with human serum albumin (HSA). The antibody titers against HSA and the total serum immunoglobulin levels were evaluated by the single radial diffusion technique. Heritability estimates indicated a genetic influence on both the immunoglobulin level and the antibody response. The influence on the primary response appeared to be the strongest one.  相似文献

Brood fish nutrition is an important factor susceptible to affect not only fecundity and gametogenesis but also gamete quality. In this study, we investigated the effects of altering dietary vegetable fatty acid content on semen quality (i.e. motility, density and seminal plasma composition), fertilizing ability and also blood testosterone (T) concentration in rainbow trout (Oncorhynchus mykiss). Fish were fed a commercial diet and ten formulated diets with similar proximate compositions but different levels of vegetable fatty acids (highly unsaturated fatty acids (HUFA): monounsaturated fatty acids (MUFA); HUFA: polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFA); and HUFA: saturated fatty acids (SFA) ratios). Fish fed with HUFA: MUFA = 0.0 and HUFA: SFA = 0.25 ratios had the highest semen motility percentage and duration. However, the highest semen concentration and semenatocrit were observed in HUFA: SFA = 0.0 and HUFA: PUFA = 0.37 ratios. There was a significant difference in terms of K+ ion among diets supplemented with HUFA: PUFA = 0.0, HUFA: PUFA = 0.37 and HUFA: MUFA = 0.16 ratios (< .05). Furthermore, Na+ ion showed significant difference between control group and diet supplemented with HUFA: PUFA = 0.0 (< .05). Among the biochemical parameters, total protein showed a significant difference between HUFA: MUFA = 0.16 and HUFA: PUFA = 0.37 ratios (< .05). No significant differences in fertilization ability and blood T concentration were found among dietary treatments (> .05). In addition, the present data suggest that dietary fatty acid levels could affect semen quality but not fertilization ability in O. mykiss.  相似文献

Oral administration of 5 mg mestranol daily for 100 days to 70 German Black Peid bulls improved weight gain in 72% of the animals. Average additional increment ranged from 2 to 17%. During the first weeks of administration there was a weak and transient protein-anabolic action and improvement in digestion of crude protein. Appetite was slightly stimulated. Consumption of food and energy per unit of weight gain was improved; better growth led to higher slaughter weight. Treatment had no effect on meat to bone ratio, degree of fulness of the gastointestinal tract, or meat quality. Skeletal mineralization was improved by 10-30%, and there was a noticeable anabolic effect on mineral metabolism. After longer administration an antigonadotropic action became evident. Some veterinary indications for use in fattening cattle were derived from these effects. Further pharmacological and clinical investigation of this and more active anabolics seemed to be required.  相似文献

The toxicity of Dursban 44 (chlorpyrifos) in dairy bulls in two large Northeastern A.I. bull centers is reported. One hundred eighty-five (185) bulls were treated at the first center and two hundred thirty-two (232) at the second. The application of this product resulted in the death of seven and one bulls, respectively. The knowledge and experience gained at the first center resulted in rapid diagnosis and specific treatment at the second and was felt to be a significant reason for the lower death rate. Typical, clinical signs of organophosphate poisoning were not exhibited in these two outbreaks. Specific diagnosis, treatment and the course of chlorpyrifos poisoning in Holstein bulls are discussed.  相似文献
