Three laboratory experiments were conducted to assess nutritional quality of cottonseed meals from genetically modified (GM) cotton crops, Roundup Ready® Flex, Bollgard® × Roundup Ready, Bollgard II® × Roundup Ready, and Bollgard II × Roundup Ready Flex for channel catfish, Ictalurus punctatus using Good Laboratory Practices. Growth, feed efficiency, survival, and fillet composition of catfish fed diets containing 20% cottonseed meal from these cotton products were compared with that of catfish fed diets containing cottonseed meals from the near‐isogenic, non‐GM control and non‐GM commercial varieties. Juvenile catfish (mean weights of 4.1, 5.0, and 0.6 g per fish for Experiments 1, 2, and 3, respectively) were stocked in each of 80‐L aquaria and fed experimental diets for 8 weeks. Although there were slight variations in proximate composition, amino acids, and gossypol concentrations, the GM cottonseed meals were not significantly different from the conventional control and the reference cottonseed meals. Weight gain, feed conversion, survival, and fillet composition of catfish fed GM cottonseed meals appeared similar to that of either the control or the commercial cottonseed meals. Results from the present study demonstrate that these GM cottonseed meals are nutritionally equivalent to conventional non‐GM cotton varieties when fed to catfish at 20% of the diet.

A study was conducted to examine the use of corn distillers’ by‐products in diets and the effects of additional dietary fat on channel catfish, Ictalurus punctatus, performance. Juvenile channel catfish (initial weight: 12.6 g per fish) were stocked in flow‐through aquaria and fed one of six practical diets for 9 weeks. Fish fed the control + fat diet consumed more diet and had higher feed efficiency ratio (FER) than fish fed the control diet, but weight gain was not significantly different between fish fed these two diets. Fish fed the diet containing 300 g kg?1 distillers dried grains with solubles (DDGS) consumed more diet and gained more weight, but had similar FER compared with fish fed the control + fat diet. The diet containing 200 g kg?1 high‐protein distillers grains (HPDDG) resulted in similar diet consumption, weight gain and FER as the control + fat diet. Fish fed the diet containing 100 g kg?1 distillers solubles (DS) consumed more diet, but had similar weight gain and FER compared with fish fed the 300 g kg?1 DDGS diet. The presence of distillers solubles in the diet (300 g kg?1 DDGS, 100 g kg?1 DS, 100 g kg?1 EDS diets) appears to increase diet consumption, weight gain, and FER over the control diets with or without additional fat.

Juvenile channel catfish Ictalurus punctatus were fed casein–gelatin‐based semi‐purified test diets with graded amounts of arginine (ARG, 0.5%, 1%, 2% and 4% of dry diet) for a 6‐week period, to evaluate the effects of dietary ARG supplementation on performance indicators, levels of plasma ARG, ornithine, citrulline, glutamine and glutamate, as well as selected innate immune parameters. Incremental dietary ARG resulted in significant improvements in weight gain, feed efficiency and protein efficiency ratios, protein retention, protein deposition and arginine deposition. Fish fed the 4% ARG diet had significantly higher values for all performance indicators, although these values were not different from those of fish fed the 2% ARG diet with the exception of protein retention, protein deposition and arginine deposition. Conversely, fish fed the 0.5% ARG diet had significantly lower values for all analysed plasma amino acids. Similarly, both phagocyte superoxide anion production and neutrophil respiratory burst were significantly decreased in fish fed the 0.5% ARG diet. These results demonstrate that the indispensability of dietary ARG is not only related to optimized protein utilization for growth but also its supplementation to fish diets may significantly impact several aspects of the immune system, including phagocyte function and thus improve overall fish health.

Juvenile channel catfish (5.6 g/fish) were fed a basal diet that contained major protein (soybean meal, cottonseed meal) and energy (ground corn grain, wheat middlings) ingredients that were derived from plant sources. The basal diet was supplemented with three levels of crystalline taurine to provide 1, 2 and 5 g/kg taurine. In addition, a fifth diet that contained 80 g/kg menhaden fishmeal formulated with the same plant‐source ingredients was included as the positive control diet. Fish were fed the five diets once daily for 12 weeks. Weight gain was highest in catfish fed taurine at 2 g/kg (47.8 g/fish) compared to catfish fed the control basal diet (40.8 g/fish) and 80 g/kg fishmeal diet (41.1 g/fish) (< .05). Among the taurine‐supplemented diets, weight gain was lowest in catfish fed taurine at 5 g/kg. Feed conversion ratio (FCR) was significantly improved in fish fed diets supplemented with taurine at 2 g/kg compared to all other treatments (< .01). Survival during the growth study ranged from 98.0 to 99.0% (> .05) for all treatments. The results suggest taurine supplementation to juvenile channel catfish may improve weight gain and FCR.

The effects of feed restriction on channel catfish production, processing yield (carcass and fillet), visceral composition and body shape traits were determined. Channel catfish (initial mean weight =0.77 kg) were stocked into six 0.04‐ha ponds at ~5775 kg ha?1. Two ponds were assigned to each of three feeding regimes for a 4‐week trial: fed daily to satiation, fed once weekly to satiation and not fed. Fish were measured for weight, processing yield and visceral components after 2 and 4 weeks, and for body shape after 4 weeks. Growth was fastest in fish fed daily, intermediate in fish fed weekly and slowest in unfed fish. There were no differences in survival among feeding regimes. After covariate adjustment for weight differences, fish fed daily had shorter, thicker bodies, and smaller heads than fish from feed‐restricted treatments. Carcass yield was higher for females than males and higher at week 2 than at week 4, but was not affected by feeding regime. Fillet yield was higher for females than males, higher at week 2 than at week 4, and higher for fish fed daily than for feed‐restricted fish (fed once weekly and not fed). Viscerosomatic index (VSI), visceral fat‐somatic index (VFI) and hepatosomatic index were higher at week 2 than at week 4, and highest for fish fed daily, intermediate for fish fed weekly and lowest for unfed fish. Hepatosomatic index and VSI were higher for females than males, but VFI was not different between genders. The female gonadosomatic index increased over time but was not affected by feeding regime. Short‐term feed restriction had negative impacts on growth and fillet yield. Processors could benefit by marketing severely feed‐restricted channel catfish as carcasses rather than fillets since fillet yield declined but carcass yield was unchanged by feed restriction.

Juvenile channel catfish (Ictalurus punctatus) were fed with nutritionally complete, basal diets supplemented with NaCl at 0, 10, 20 or 40 g kg?1 diet (0, 1, 2, or 4%) to apparent satiation twice daily for 10 weeks. Catfish were exposed to nitrite after six (7.70 mg L?1 nitrite‐N) and ten (7.18 mg L?1 nitrite‐N) weeks of feeding to determine the effect of dietary NaCl supplementation on resistance to nitrite toxicity. Fish were sampled before (baseline, pre‐exposure) and after 24‐h nitrite exposure to determine the effects of dietary NaCl on haematology (haematocrit, haemoglobin and methaemoglobin) and plasma electrolyte dynamics (nitrite, chloride, sodium and potassium). Mortality from nitrite toxicity was also determined. Mortality from nitrite exposure tended to decrease with increasing NaCl in the diet at 6 weeks and was significantly lower in the 40 g kg?1 NaCl group (12.5%) compared to the control group (57.5%). A similar trend in mortality occurred at 10 weeks as well; however, the differences among dietary treatments were not significant. The improvements in blood MetHb (non‐significant), chloride and nitrite levels in catfish may at least in part be responsible for the improved survival after nitrite exposure, which trended in support of the prevailing hypotheses for the positive effects of NaCl on nitrite toxicity.

A study was conducted with channel catfish, Ictalurus puntatus to determine apparent digestibility/availability coefficients of protein, amino acids, lipid and energy for alternative plant‐protein feedstuffs: corn gluten feed, corn germ meal, distillers dried grains with solubles, and canola meal, compared with those for soybean meal. A 32%‐protein, chemically defined diet containing 8% fish meal was used as the reference diet. Test diets consisted of 70:30 ratio of reference diet to test ingredient with chromic oxide (0.75% of the diet) as an inert indicator. Apparent digestibility/availability coefficients of protein, essential amino acids and energy in alternative protein feedstuffs tested were generally lower than those in soybean meal by channel catfish. Apparent digestibility coefficients of protein ranged from 75 to 87% and those of energy ranged from 52 to 59% for alternative feedstuffs. Lysine in alternative feedstuffs was 67–79%, methionine was 69–85% and cystine was 73–82% available to channel catfish. There were no significant differences in lipid ADCs among test feedstuffs (91.9–96.8%). Results from the present study can be useful in formulating cost‐effective catfish feeds using these alternative feedstuffs.

Year-1 channel catfish, Ictalurus punctatus (Rafinesque) (average initial weight, 48 g) were fed diets containing 240 g kg?1, 300 g kg?1, or 360 g kg?1 dietary protein with 0 or 20 mg kg?1 ractopamine to satiation and diets containing 240 g kg?1 and 360 g kg?1 protein with 0 or 20 mg kg?1 ractopamine at a restricted rate (60% of satiation) in aquaria at 29 ± 2°C for 8 weeks. Fish fed ractopamine at the 360 g kg?1 protein level gained significantly more weight than controls when fed to satiation but not when the ration was restricted. Fish fed ractopamine at the 240 g kg?1 protein level did not gain more weight than the controls at satiation or restricted feeding. Fish fed ractopamine in the diet containing 300 g kg?1 protein gained significantly more weight than controls when fed to satiation. Ractopamine caused no significant differences in feed conversion at the 240 g kg?1 or 360 g kg?1 protein levels with restricted or satiation feeding. Muscle fat decreased when ractopamine was fed at all dietary protein levels and at both feeding rates. Muscle protein increased with ractopamine feeding in all treatments except the high-protein, satiation treatment. Weight gain response of year-1 channel catfish to ractopamine is dependent upon nutrient concentration of the diet and ration size; however, the effect of ractopamine on muscle composition of channel catfish is less dependent on nutrient concentration or amount of diet fed.

This study was conducted to evaluate the effect of dietary levels of vitamins C (0, 100 and 2000 mg kg−1), E (0, 50 and 500 mg kg−1) and their interaction on the growth performance, liver contents of ascorbic acid and α-tocopherol, haematology and immune response of channel catfish, Ictalurus punctatus . Each diet was fed to catfish in triplicate aquaria to apparent satiation twice daily for 12 weeks. The results indicate that the amount of vitamin E contained in the basal diet (23.1 mg kg−1) was sufficient to promote good growth, feed efficiency and survival, but its supplementation was needed to maintain high haematological values and liver vitamin E. Supplementation of vitamin C (100 mg kg−1) to the basal diet containing 10.5 mg kg−1 was required for good growth, feed efficiency, survival and prevention of vertebral deformity and optimum haematological indices. Liver storage of ascorbic acid and α-tocopherol increased with increasing dietary levels of each vitamin. Dietary vitamin E levels had no effect on liver ascorbic acid content, but increasing dietary vitamin C increased liver α-tocopherol. Some measured immune parameters (serum protein and superoxide anion production) were enhanced by supplementation of vitamin C or E. Chemotaxis ratio and phagocytosis were not affected by treatments.

The study was conducted to examine the effects of different methionine (Met) sources on the growth performance of channel catfish (Ictalurus punctatus). Six diets with isonitrogen and isoenergy were formulated as positive control (PC) diet (0.57% Met), negative control (NC) diet (0.42% Met) without or with the addition of crystalline DL‐Met (CM), Met hydroxy analogue (MHA), Met hydroxy analogue calcium salt (MHA‐Ca) and microcapsulated DL‐Met (MM) to obtain the same Met level as PC diet. After 8 weeks feeding trial, channel catfish (76.0 ± 0.3 g) fed MHA‐Ca and MM diets, but not CM and MHA diets, had higher weight gain, lipid productive value, protein productive value and lower feed conversion ratio than those in NC group (< 0.05) and showed no differences in these indicators with PC group (> 0.05). Levels of serum total protein and total free amino acid (TFAA) of all groups peaked at the 4th h, and CM group had lower TFAA level than that in MM group at the 6th h after feeding (< 0.05). In NC group, the activities of liver aspartate aminotransferase and alanine aminotransferase peaked at the 4 h after feeding, and the peaking time in CM group was advanced to the 2nd hour, while in MHA, MHA‐Ca and MM groups, the peaking times were delayed to the 6th hour after feeding. The above results indicated that the supplementation of MHA‐Ca, MM rather than CM, MHA in diets deficient in methionine could improve the growth of channel catfish.

This study investigated the effects of dietary lysolecithin on growth performance, feed utilization and metabolic responses of channel catfish (Ictalurus punctatus). Fish (initial weight: 14.77 ± 0.45 g) were randomly fed one of five practical diets supplemented with graded levels of lysolecithin (0, 125, 250, 375 and 500 mg/kg) in quadruplicate groups for 10 weeks. Results showed that no significant differences in weight gain, condition factor and viscerosomatic index among all the treatments. Fish fed diet supplemented with 250 mg/kg lysolecithin had significantly decreased feed conversion ratio and significantly increased protein efficiency ratio compared to that fed the control diet. The group with 250 mg/kg of dietary lysolecithin had higher protein and lower lipid contents in the whole body, and lower lipid content in the liver than those in the control group. Groups supplemented with 250–500 mg/kg of dietary lysolecithin had significantly higher gastric and intestinal lipase activities than the control group. Dietary lysolecithin at the level of 250 mg/kg significantly increased the activities of Na+, K+‐ATPase, alkaline phosphatase, total antioxidative capacity, total superoxide dismutase, glutathione peroxidase and catalase and significantly decreased the content of malondialdehyde compared to the control diet. In conclusion, dietary supplementation of lysolecithin could confer benefits of feed utilization, body composition and antioxidative capacity of channel catfish.

A study was conducted in earthen ponds to investigate the effects of available lysine (AL) concentrations in 28 and 32% protein diets on production and processing characteristics, proximate composition, and lysine concentrations in the fillet of channel catfish, Ictalurus punctatus. Diets were formulated to contain 28% protein with 1.22 and 1.43% AL, and 32% protein with 1.43 and 1.63% AL, which were equivalent to 4.37, 5.1, 4.46, and 5.1% AL of protein, respectively. Fingerlings with a mean initial weight of 32 g/fish were stocked into 20 ponds (0.04 ha) at 19,760 fish/ha. Fish were fed once daily to apparent satiation for 181 days. No significant differences were observed for total diet fed, net yield, weight gain, survival, or fillet proximate composition among dietary treatments. However, the 28% protein with low AL diet (1.22% AL of diet or 4.37% AL of protein) resulted in significantly lower carcass and fillet yield and fillet lysine level compared with fish fed the 28% protein diet with 1.43% AL (5.1% AL of protein) and 32% protein diets with 1.43 and 1.63% AL (4.47 and 5.1% AL of protein). Results suggest 1.43% AL of diet is adequate for both 28 and 32% protein diets for optimum growth, processing yield, and lysine retention in fillets for pond-raised channel catfish.
