Purpose: Citrus white snail, Helicella candeharica Pfeiffer (Panpulmonata: Helicidae) is one of the most important orchard pests. In this study, the effectiveness of mineral oil was compared with molluscicide baits such as metaldehyde, ferricole (iron phosphate) and a snail-repellent paint in a commercial citrus orchard in northern Iran to reduce access of citrus white snails to citrus trees.

Materials and methods: The number of snails on citrus trees was monitored and counted 10 days after the application of the treatments, and at an interval of 6–8 days up to harvest time.

Results: In the first study, the mineral oil and repellent paint treatments reduced a number of snails best. In the second study, using metaldehyde and mineral oil barrier, again the mineral oil barrier reduced snails best. The cost of each treatment during one season per hectare was calculated at 55, 153, 124 and 120?$/ha for mineral oil, iron phosphate, snail-repellent paint and metaldehyde, respectively.

Conclusions: Mineral oil is an effective alternative for chemical compounds for reducing access by H. candeharica to citrus trees.  相似文献

Purpose: The purposes of this study were to characterise the migration and the colonisation dynamics of two different fluorescent-tagged rhizobia in various alfalfa tissues (especially in seeds); and also to develop efficient inoculation treatments to promote colonisation ability of target rhizobia in elite seed varieties.

Materials and methods: Four treatments (root drench, root damaging and drench, root drench with matrine, and flower spray) were applied to inoculate alfalfa with two fluorescent-tagged rhizobia, Ensifer meliloti LZgn5f (gn5f) and Ensifer meliloti 12531f (12531f), at three different growth stages; bud, flower and pod stages. The migration and colonisation dynamics of the two fluorescent tagged rhizobia strains were monitored using UV lamp detection and a stereo fluorescence microscopy.

Results: The results showed that both rhizobia strains mainly colonised the roots and could migrate to aerial tissues. In aerial tissues, when alfalfa plants were inoculated during the bud stage, both rhizobia strains mainly colonised the leaves and stems; during the flower stage, a spray inoculation treatment resulted in more 12531f colonising reproductive tissues, while during the pod stage, more rhizobial strains gn5f colonised seeds using the root drench with matrine treatment.

Conclusions: These results indicate that endophytic rhizobia are natural inhabitants of internal regions of roots, stems, leaves and that the endophytes may arise from reproductive tissues, such as seeds. Understanding the population dynamics of endophytic rhizobia in alfalfa would considerably improve the survival of target rhizobia during seed transfer. Combining target endogenous rhizobial species with good alfalfa seed varieties may lead to the development of a novel breeding method.  相似文献

Introduction and purpose: The ability of apple rootstocks to become infected by Neonectria ditissima, the cause of European canker, was studied over two years.

Materials and methods: Rootstocks B9 and M9 with a size suitable for grafting (6-10 mm stem diameter, termed rootstocks), and smaller sized rootstocks (<5 mm stem diameter, termed transplants) of B9, M9, M26, MM106 and Antonovka were inoculated with N. ditissima at different times, either with contaminated map pins or with spore suspensions. In addition, the rootstocks were either defeathered (side shoots removed), topped (top shoot headed) or both, to create wounds that would normally occur during propagation, while wounds on transplants were made by removing leaves.

Results and discussion: One month after inoculation, slightly sunken canker lesions had developed around the inoculation points of the map pins or wounds. No lesions developed on the non-inoculated controls. Map pin inoculation resulted in 30% to 89% infection and spore suspension sprayed on wounds from 5% to 45% infection. When the cankered areas were split open, brown lesions with necrotic tissue due to infection by N. ditissima appeared. The transplants of M9, M26 and MM106 inoculated with contaminated map pins in 2014 developed necrosis on 40% to 67% of the plants, but there were no differences in the incidence or severity among the different types. On the transplants of B9, Antonovka and M9 inoculated in 2015, there was more necrosis on B9 (42%) than on Antonovka (11%) and more sporulating lesions on B9 (29%) than on M9 (9%) or on Antonovka (4%).

Conclusion: It can be concluded that rootstocks used for apple trees may become infected by N. ditissima, and wounds should thus be protected during propagation.  相似文献

Arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi (AMF) play an important role in plants growth and soils dynamic in all most ecosystems. The main objective of the present study was to evaluate the plant-AMF interactions on soil functions under arid protected area ‘Zarat-Gabès’ in Tunisia.

AMF colonization was evaluated by visual observation of AMF in fine roots of eight herbaceous plants. The level of mycorrhizal colonization varied between plants. Astragalus corrugatus and Hippocrepis areolata showed the highest mycorrhizal performance. The relative spore number was significantly different across rhizosphere soils. Statistical analysis showed a clearly positive correlation between the number of spores and plant-mycorrhizal intensity.

For microbiological parameters, our results showed that mycorrhizal plants improved significantly the various microbiological parameters. Rhizosphere soils of Astragalus corrugatus and Hippocrepis areolata presented the necessary microbial densities and microorganisms more stable compared to unplanted soil. This study allowed obtaining a new result that challenges us about the need for efficient management of natural resources in the objective of nature conservation.  相似文献

Fermentation in combination with subsequent composting of biowaste is a preferred method for municipalities to recycle organic byproducts and transform them into useful end products for soil amelioration or plant fertilization. These compost products, especially if obtained from household wastes, can be a source of hazardous components, e.g. heavy metals, pathogens, synthetic chemicals or toxic organic compounds. An avoidance test with two earthworm species (Eisenia fetida and Aporrectodea caliginosa) was conducted to assess the impact of differently processed biowaste based digestate products on soil invertebrates. Body weight changes were recorded, as well as differences in effects on adult versus juvenile earthworms.

While E. fetida showed no avoidance towards the digestate products (negative avoidance, meaning that the tested products were preferred, of 80 to 100 %), A. caliginosa rejected the crude biowaste digestate compost in higher concentrations (avoidance of 45 %), but not the agglomerated or pelletized variants. A clear weight gain of up to 25 % was observed only for individuals of E. fetida. The developmental stages of the worms were not crucial for the outcome of the avoidance test.

Based on the results of this study the application of biowaste products on arable land cannot be recommended without constraints.  相似文献

Purpose: Root and root hairs of plants have been intensively studied in solution culture; however, correlation of such measurements in solution culture with development in soil is poorly understood. Therefore, the aim of this study is to study whether root and root hairs grown in solution culture can predict their behavior in soil and their correlation with macro- and micronutrients uptake of wheat genotypes.

Materials and methods: The growth of roots and root hairs as well as uptake of macro- and micronutrients of six spring wheat varieties was compared in solution culture under P stress and P abundance and in a low fertility soil.

Results and conclusions: Root length and surface area under P stress were significantly positively correlated with that in the low fertility soil, while no such correlation was apparent for root hair length and density. In absolute terms, the root length, surface area, root hair length and density of spring wheat varieties were substantially higher in soil than in solution culture, while the concentration and uptake of macro- and micronutrients in soil differed from solution culture in a complex way. The early uptake of macro- and micronutrients was intimately associated with root length and surface area as well as root hair length and density in soil but not in solution culture. Therefore, root length rather than root hair traits in low-P solution may be used to screen early root growth vigor in soil and thereby high nutrient uptake of wheat in low fertility soil.  相似文献

Purpose: The aims of this article are to highlight pre-breeding procedures for identifying primary sources of Striga-resistance genes and to summarize complimentary breeding techniques that enhance partial resistance of maize varieties against Striga species.

Materials and methods: The paper presented a comprehensive account of Striga screening and controlling techniques and highlighted the potential of integrating partial resistance with FOS to boost maize production and productivity in SSA.

Results: Striga infestation is a major constraint to maize production and productivity in Sub-Saharan Africa (SSA). A lack of Striga-resistant maize varieties and the limited adoption of other control methods hinder effective and integrated control of the parasitic weed in maize and related cereal crops globally. Genetic resistance of maize should be complemented with the use of Fusarium oxysporum f.sp. strigea (FOS), a biocontrol agent known to suppress Striga.

Conclusions: A combined use of genetic resistance and FOS has remained largely unutilized in controlling Striga in Africa. A combination of conventional and molecular Striga-resistance breeding tools as well as the use of FOS are promising methods to effectively control Striga in SSA.  相似文献

Purpose: Pseudomonas syringae pv. actinidiae causes bacterial canker of kiwifruit and is responsible for severe economic losses and emergence of drug-resistant bacteria. Bacteriophages are viruses that infect target bacterial hosts and may be the best strategy to prevent and control kiwifruit canker disease. The objective of this experiment was to monitor the prevalence of Pseudomonas syringae pv. actinidiae and provide insight for the use of phages in biological control.

Materials and methods: In this study, 52 strains of Pseudomonas syringae pv. actinidiae were isolated from 68 stem samples of kiwi plant (cv. Hongyang & Jinkui). Following polymerase chain reaction (PCR) analysis, 15 isolates belonging to biovar 3 were identified, one of which was named XWY0007 and used as the target strain to isolate the phages. Thirty-six phages were isolated and purified from a total of 51 surface water samples collected in Shanghai. All phages were identified by transmission electron microscopy (TEM) and their host ranges were evaluated. Three phages, designated φXWY0013, φXWY0014 and φXWY0026 were selected and further characterised using one-step growth curve and stability at different temperatures and pH.

Results and conclusions: The isolated phages are promising for use as antimicrobials against bacterial canker in kiwi. This report is regarding Pseudomonas syringae pv. actinidiae and its phages from major areas of kiwifruit cultivation.  相似文献

We examined the effects of mechanical chopping to reduce shrub cover for grassland restoration in a semi-desert environment near Douglas, Arizona, USA. Specifically, soils were sampled to determine spatial and treatment differences, after 10 years, in soil-N fertility islands associated with undisturbed honey mesquite shrubs (Prosopis glandulosa Torr. var. glandulosa) compared with resprouted mesquite shrubs. Honey mesquite is the dominant shrub of this degraded grassland community.

One decade after mechanical crushing of shrubs for grassland restoration, soil amino sugar nitrogen (N) values and patterns for resprouted honey mesquite and undisturbed shrubs did not differ from one another according to a repeated measures analysis of variance. However, the concentrations in samples of the surficial 30-cm of soil around undisturbed and resprouted shrubs combined differed statistically at 161 parts per million (ppm) at trunk, 100 ppm midway between trunk and dripline, 78 ppm at the dripline, and 46 ppm beyond the dripline.

The results indicate that soil N fertility remained stable, but with decreasing levels at regular, radial sample points extending from the trunk to beyond the dripline, around mesquite shrubs that resprouted 10 years after mechanical crushing of tops for grassland restoration.  相似文献

Lucerne was grown in nutrient solutions at adequate and “deficient”; levels of sulphur, nitrogen, phosphorus or potassium. Volatile losses of sulphur were then measured when shoots and roots were oven dried at 80°C for 48 hours.

Small but significant losses of sulphur occurred during oven drying. Losses from shoots ranged from 4.2 to 13.9 μgS/g dry weight, which represented from 0.38 to 0.66% of the total sulphur content of the shoot. Losses from roots ranged from 12.0 to 47.8 μgS/g dry weight, representing 0.82 to 1.77% of the total sulphur content of the root. Decreases in supply of nitrogen, phosphorus, potassium or sulphur generally decreased the amount of volatile sulphur lost by oven drying shoots. Losses from roots generally decreased when supply of sulphur decreased, but increased when nitrogen and potassium supply decreased, and were generally unaffected by phosphorus supply.

The organic sulphur concentration in the tissue was linearly correlated with absolute losses of sulphur (r = 0.799** for shoots; r = 0.822** for roots), the amount of sulphur lost per unit dry weight (r = 0.469* for shoots; r = 0.381* for roots) and the percentage of the total sulphur released as volatile sulphur (r = 0.937** for shoots; r = 0.970** for roots). By contrast, the total sulphur concentration in the tissue was linearly correlated only with the amount of sulphur lost per unit dry weight ( r = 0.704** for shoots; r = 0.723** for roots).  相似文献

Purpose: The main aim of this study was to introduce and explore plant growth-promoting bacteria (PGPB) indigenous to ginseng, and to evaluate their ability to improve production and quality, and effect on rhizosphere niche in ginseng.

Materials and methods: Endophytic bacteria were isolated from root, stem, and leaf of ginseng from different sites and genotype in China and Korea, screened based on their beneficial properties as PGPB. Nine bacterial isolates were selected according to their plant growth properties including soluble phosphate and potassium, ammonia, auxin and siderophore producing, ACC deaminase, and antagonistic pathogen as well. Changes in ginseng after PGPB inoculation were evaluated with respect to the non-inoculated control.

Results and Conclusions: The PGPB isolates were identified as genera Bacillus, Lysinibacillus, Rhizobium, Stenotrophomonas, Erwinia, Ochrobactrum, Enterobacter and Pantoea based on 16S rRNA sequences. Inoculation of G209 and G119 increased not only plant height, root length, fresh weight, and dry weight, but also root activity and the amount of ginsenosides significantly. In particular, using the Illumina Miseq platform, the native bacterial community of rhizospheric soil maintained high community diversity and increased abundance of specific bacteria. Therefore, they may be play a crucial role in sustainable ginseng cultivating in farmland.  相似文献

Nitrogen (N) is a major factor limiting grain production in the high rainfall zone (HRZ, 450–700 mm annual average rainfall of southwestern Australia (SWA). Transient waterlogging and leaching of applied N fertilizer are hazards faced in most years by crop producers. The major crops are wheat (Triticum aestivum L.), barley (Hordeum vulgare L.), canola (Brassica napus L.) and lupin (Lupinus angustifiolius L.) grown in rotation. Two series of experiments involving, levels and timing of N fertilizer application and levels of plant population were done. The first series, in 2003–2004, consisted of 3 experiments in 3 growing seasons (early May to late-October) to measure the grain yield (GY) increase (response) of wheat and barley to various methods of N fertilizer application (methods of split N application were compared to N applied at sowing). The aim of the experiments was to determine the optimal N fertilizer application strategy for maximum GY and quality in situations where transient waterlogging was a frequent occurrence. The second series of four experiments, from 2007–2009, measured the GY of wheat sown at three levels of plant population to 4 levels of N applied after transient waterlogging (taken to be rainfall events in which >25 mm of rain was recorded in 24 to 48 hours).

Applying the N fertilizer after high rainfall and transient waterlogging (tactical N application) increased GY and protein percentage of grain compared to applying all of the N fertilizer at sowing. Where transient waterlogging was not frequent, applying the N after waterlogging was not always better than applying part of the N according to growth stage of the crop or according to fixed times after sowing. When the crop was water-logged three or more times, N uptake by the crop at anthesis and apparent fertilizer N recovery in the crop was substantially increased by applying the N after waterlogging compared to applying the entire N at sowing. This study found that a tactical N management strategy for the HRZ of SWA is to apply some N at sowing with subsequent applications made after heavy rainfall that leads to transient waterlogging. Split N fertilizer applied either according to time after sowing or to growth stage of the crop was equally effective for increasing GY in situations where waterlogging was less frequent.

The observation from these experiments, that grain yield increases due to splitting the N dose were associated with increases in ear numbers, lead to a further set of experiments where plant population was increased in conjunction with N applied after waterlogging events. The combined strategy of increased plant population with strategic N application decreased the amount of N required for maximum GY where more than 3 heavy rainfall events occurred in a growing season.

One practical outcome of this research is to indicate that farmers can withhold applications of N fertilizer after sowing in seasons when transient waterlogging does not occur.  相似文献

Rice is the world’s second most produced staple cereal crop after wheat. Currently, rice production and consumption have steadily increased in Sub-Saharan Africa (SSA). To date, rice is the largest imported commodity crop in the region. The low productivity is due to a number of biotic and abiotic stresses, and socio-economic constraints. Among the biotic constraints, rice yellow mottle virus (RYMV) is the most important constraint to rice in SSA. In SSA, RYMV causes yield losses ranging from 20% to 100%. Various control strategies (host resistance, cultural practices and chemicals) have been recommended to manage RYMV epidemics. RYMV disease management through generic crop protection chemicals is not economic nor is it successful due to the presence of a large number of vector species disseminating the virus. In addition, cultural practices are ineffective against RYMV because the virus is spread by several agents, including insect vectors. The use of RYMV resistant cultivars remains the most effective, economic and environmentally friendly method for resource poor farmers. However, RYMV resistant varieties have not yet been developed and deployed in SSA. The aim of this review was to present the main components in the development of rice cultivars with RYMV disease resistance. The paper provides a comprehensive review on the genetic variability of the RYMV, its epidemiology and control measures, and the gene action responsible for RYMV resistance.

The review also summarises complementary genomic tools useful in RYMV disease resistance breeding.

Successful breeding of rice for RYMV resistance depends on the availability of genes for stable resistance, knowledge of the genetics of the host and, the availability of efficient phenotyping and pathotyping methods, and understanding of the genes involved and their pattern of inheritance. Information presented in the review can serve as a reference guide for rice breeding emphasising RYMV resistance, high yields and farmers-preferred traits.  相似文献

Destructive core sampling is the most recognized technique for soil bulk density estimation to monitor soil compaction. This study was conducted to determine if soil bulk density sampler size would impact value estimates and silvicultural treatment distinctions in southeastern Piedmont forest soils of the Clemson Experimental Forest, Clemson, South Carolina, USA. In 2004, six hundred soils were sampled using both an Oakfield Soil Probe (diameter 2.5 cm) and an AMS, Inc. Slide Hammer (diameter 5.1 cm). The smaller, Oakfield Soil Probe values were greater than the larger, AMS Inc. Slide Hammer values (p < 0.0001) and values from both samplers were greater in the thin and burn treatments than the control treatments (p < 0.007). Strong correlation of the values between the samplers was also demonstrated (p < 00001; r2 = 0.62). These results highlight the utility of the smaller Oakfield Soil Probe when accessibility and intensity may impose sampling constraints.

Traditional soil testing has a limited predictability about available nutrients for plant uptake. Potential of ion exchange resin membrane (RM) or plant root simulator probe is evaluated to determine the effect of moisture on nutrient availability and uptake by corn (Zea mays L.), under greenhouse condition. Available nutrient concentrations measured by RM in two soil series at three soil moisture levels (40%, 60%, and 80% of field capacity) with (W) and without (W/O) the plant at V3 and V7 stages were compared with plant nutrient content at the V7 stage. Soil moisture did not influence RM-extracted nutrient concentrations (except for N at V3). Concentrations of nitrogen (N), phosphorus (P), potassium (K), sulfur (S), and iron (Fe) from RM at the V3 stage significantly correlated with shoot uptake. The presence of plant (W- vs. W/O-plant) significantly influenced RM-nutrient concentration at both stages. RM can predict crop nutrient requirements.

Seedlings of twenty cultivars of Triticum aestivum L. differing in tolerance to aluminum (Al) were grown with Al (74 uM, 2.0 mg L‐1 ) and without Al at pH 4.5 to examine the effect of Al on the element composition of leaf and root tissues of juvenile plants. Treatment with Al reduced concentrations of Mg and Mn and increased concentrations of Al, P, Ca, and Fe in roots. Treatment with Al reduced concentrations of P, Ca, Mg, Fe, and Mn in leaves. Concentrations of Mg, Fe, and Mn in leaves were in the range considered to be deficient.

Cultivars differed in the effect of Al on element composition. Concentrations of Ca, Mg, Fe, and Mn in leaves of the 20 cultlvars grown with Al were positively correlated with cultivar tolerance to Al as measured by relative root yield. The variance, however, was relatively high. Leaf P concentrations of seedlings grown with Al were not significantly correlated with tolerance to Al. Differences among cultivars in the effect of Al on element, composition were not likely a primary cause of differential tolerance to Al, but Al‐induced element deficiencies may have a secondary effect on the yield of cultivars grown on sub‐lethal, Al‐toxic substrates.  相似文献

Phosphorus (P) deficiency is one of the major constraints to crop yield worldwide, and genotypes or cultivars with high phosphate use efficiency (PUE) sustain growth when exposed to phosphate stress. Therefore, it is imperative to develop the genotypes or cultivars with high PUE. A pot experiment was conducted to evaluate the PUE among 150 barley (Hordeum vulgare L.) genotypes. Two high-tolerant and -sensitive accessions were selected. These two candidate materials were used to investigate the differences among the root morphology characteristics, antioxidant enzyme activity, inorganic phosphate (Pi) content and gene expression of HvPT5 under P-deficiency and P-sufficiency conditions. The values of these parameters were higher in the low-P-tolerant genotype than in the sensitive one. In pot experiment 1, all genotypes showed a significant difference in low-P tolerance, with variety GN121 achieving the highest tolerance, and GN42 being most sensitive. The results of this study may provide elite genetic germplasms for future work on isolation of P-related genes, and the improvement of PUE in barley.

Integrated effects of fly ash (FA), farmyard manure (FYM), and chemical fertilizers recommended dose of fertilizer (RDF) on the performance of rice (Oryza sativa L.) and their residual effect on rapeseed (Brassica camprestris L. vartoria) were studied for two years in loamy acidic inceptisol of Assam, India.

The FA was generated from a bituminous and lignite coal-based captive thermal power plant of Hindustan Paper Corporation Ltd (HPCL), Assam. Rice yields were higher when FA, FYM, and RDF were used collectively vis-à-vis sole application of RDF reflected also in rapeseed under residual effect . FA effect on mean rice equivalent yield of the rice–rapeseed system was the highest (24.4%) under integrated application. Nickel (Ni) and cadmium (Cd) contents in rice decreased with increasing FA, while arsenic (As) was just the opposite. Integration of FA, FYM, and RDF was effective in lowering Ni, Cd, and As in rice compared to 100% RDF alone or together with FA. The residual effect on rapeseed was similar for Ni and As while the Cd content increased. Blending of FA, FYM, and RDF also positively altered the residual soil pH, organic carbon (C), and nitrogen, phosphorus, and potassium (NPK). Thus, FA can be an integral component of integrated plant nutrition system (IPNS) in augmenting crop yield and residual benefits in loamy acid inceptisol.  相似文献

The effects of chemical fertilizers on soil microbial communities have been well studied in a variety of terrestrial systems. However, the individual effects of N, P, and K fertilizers and their combinations (NP, NK, PK and NPK) on bacterial community structure in black soils have not been fully understood. In this study, we applied Illumina MiSeq sequencing and network analysis targeting 16S rRNA gene to comprehensively characterize the effects of 35 years of these inorganic fertilizers on community diversity and composition in the black soil. The results of α-diversity indices and principal coordinates analysis (PCoA) indicated that the N-addition treatments had larger effects than the others. The network analysis showed that the N fertilizer shifted the network structure, topological roles of individual OTUs and key bacterial populations, contributing to a simple network under the N-fertilizer treatments compared with non-N fertilizers treatments. These findings suggested that N fertilizer reduced the bacterial diversity and simplified the interactions among key bacterial members in Mollisol. The results of this study could provide basis for further researches balancing different N application levels, the bacterial community network and crop yield to maintain the ecosystem function and stability.
