We report an efficient in vitro propagation method for Terminalia catappa using nodal segments of a 15-year-old mature tree. The nodal segments were cultured on MS medium supplemented with 6-benzyladenine (BA; 0.5–3.0 mg l−1) or Kinetin (Kn; 0.5–3.0 mg l−1) for bud breaking and multiple shoot induction. About 85% of the explant responded (2.8 ± 0.41 shoots per node with 2.7 ± 0.14 cm length) within 15 days of inoculation in Murashige and Skoog medium fortified with 2.0 mg l−1 of BA. Further shoot multiplication was achieved by repeated transfer of mother explants and subculturing of in vitro-produced shoots on medium supplemented with various concentrations of BA (0.25–1.5 mg l−1) or Kn (0.25–1.5 mg l−1) or on their combinations. Optimal number of shoots and shoot length were recorded on MS medium supplemented with 0.25 mg l−1 of BA and 0.25 mg l−1 of Kn. The multiplied shoots were used for ex vitro rooting after treatment for 4 min with indole-3-butyric acid (IBA; 50–500 mg l−1) or α-naphthalene acetic acid (NAA; 50–500 mg l−1). About 80% of the shoots treated with 200 mg l−1 of IBA produced ex vitro roots with an average of 2.8 roots per shoot. Nearly 75% of these plantlets could be acclimatized within 5 weeks and successfully established in the field. This is the first report on micropropagation of T. catappa, which can be applied for further genetic transformation assays and pharmaceutical purposes.  相似文献

In vitro propagation of Oroxylum indicum Vent. was carried out using cotyledonary node explants. Among the different types of cytokinins used for culture establishment, 6-benzyladenine exhibited the best response with higher concentrations (8.87µM or above) for inducing multiple shoots. Inclusion of indole-3-acetic acid (2.85µM) into 6-benzyladenine-supplemented medium triggered a high frequency of response as well as a proliferation of shoots. The best medium for proliferation was Murashige-Skoog (MS) medium with 6-benzyladenine (8.87µM) and indole-3-acetic acid (2.85µM). However, incorporation of gibberellic acid (1.44µM) was mandatory to enhance shoot elongation. Repeated subculturing of cotyledonary node and in vitro developed nodal segments in MS medium with 6-benzyladenine (4.44µM) at 4-week intervals resulted in continuous mass multiplication of shoots without any evidence of decline. Root induction was best (91.6%) when MS strength was reduced to one-quarter and combined with -naphthalene acetic acid (2.69µM) and indole-3-acetic acid (5.71µM), with a high survival rate (70–72%) of plantlets hardened in either soil rite or soil:sand:soil rite (1:1:2).  相似文献

Interspecific relationships in a natural forest dominated by Pinus kwangtungensis, a rare and endangered pine species endemic to China, were studied based on inventory data from 7,200 m2 plots in Nanling National Nature Reserve. With the aim to quantitatively analyze the relationships of P. kwangtungensis to other species in the forest community and to their habitat, the continuous transect sampling method was employed by placing a horizontal transect (10 m × 120 m) at a 100 m altitudinal interval from 1,100 m to 1,600 m a.s.l., which represents the altitudinal range of P. kwangtungensis in Nanling National Nature Reserve. Each transect was further divided into 12 contiguous quadrats (10 m × 10 m) for plant censuses. Both canonical correspondence analysis (CCA) and cluster analysis were used to detect the interspecific relationships. The results showed the following: 1) occurrence frequency of P. kwangtungensis in Nanling was ranked Class A in terms of Raunkiaer’s law of frequency. P. kwangtungensis dominated in the canopy more than in the subcanopy and understory; 2) both Spearman rank correlation (SRC) coefficients and Pearson correlation coefficients indicated that the number of positive covariation couplets was significantly higher than the negative covariation couplets in the forest community, although SRC appeared to be more sensitive than Pearson correlation analysis. Except for the negative covariation with Litsea elongata, P. kwangtungensis exhibited no significant correlation with other dominant species; 3) altitude, slope, slope aspect, slope shape, thickness of humus layer, and thickness of litter all had significant correlations with the three axes in CCA plot, and the environmental factors in the first two axes defined the ecological conditions of the community. The grouping of the 105 canopy tree species was made according to the characteristics of the species along the first axis. Altitude was the most effective factor influencing the distribution of P. kwangtungensis; 4) variability in spatial distribution among the 105 canopy tree species could be attributed to variations to site environmental factors. The results from CCA and cluster analysis indicated that environmental factors influenced the distribution and ecological characteristics of the plant species in the forest community dominated by P. kwangtungensis. __________ Translated from Acta Ecologica Sinica, 2006, 26(4): 1,063–1,072 [译自: 生态学报]  相似文献

Average population growth in the African Sudanian belt is 3 % per year. This leads to a significant increase in cultivated areas at the expense of fallows and forests. For centuries, rural populations have been practicing agroforestry dominated by Vitellaria paradoxa parklands. We wanted to know whether agroforestry can improve local rainfall recycling as well as forest. We compared transpiration and its seasonal variations between Vitellaria paradoxa, the dominant species in fallows, and Isoberlinia doka, the dominant species in dry forests in the Sudanian belt. The fallow and dry forest we studied are located in northwestern Benin, where average annual rainfall is 1200 mm. Sap flow density (SFD) was measured by transient thermal dissipation, from which tree transpiration was deduced. Transpiration of five trees per species was estimated by taking into account the radial profile of SFD. The effect of the species and of the season on transpiration was tested with a generalized linear mixed model. Over the three-year study period, daily transpiration of the agroforestry trees, V. paradoxa (diameters 8–38 cm) ranged between 4.4 and 26.8 L day?1 while that of the forest trees, I. doka, (diameters 20–38 cm) ranged from 9.8 to 92.6 L day?1. Daily transpiration of V. paradoxa was significantly lower (15 %) in the dry season than in the rainy season, whereas daily transpiration by I. doka was significantly higher (13 %) in the dry season than in the rainy season. Our results indicate that the woody cover of agroforestry systems is less efficient in recycling local rainfall than forest cover, not only due to lower tree density but also to species composition.  相似文献

Ruil (Nothofagus alessandrii) is an endangered keystone species from the Mediterranean climate zone of Chile. Ruil’s fragile state of conservation urges development of restoration programs, but specific protocols for nursery production and field establishment that ensure plant survival are largely unknown. Therefore, we examined the effect on nitrogen (N) fertilization and container size during nursery production in combination with the use of mesh shelters after outplanting on survival and growth during the first growing season in the field. First year outplanting survival of nursery-grown container seedlings was enhanced when seedlings were given nitrogen (N) during nursery production and deployed with mesh tree shelters in the field. The volume of the container had no effect on outplanting survival and growth. Increasing N from zero to 200 mg N L?1 provided sufficient N levels, resulting in increased seedling height, root-collar diameter, shoot biomass, and total seedling N and phosphorous concentrations. Additional N provided by the 400 and 600 mg N L?1 treatments underwent luxury consumption by the seedlings with no further benefits in field performance. Improved growth in the nursery, along with the use of mesh tree shelters after outplanting, especially during the typical summer drought, may be responsible for increased survival during the first growing season. Increasing the performance of nursery-grown ruil seedlings is essential to restoring this endangered, vulnerable, and foundation species within the highly biodiverse, yet seriously threatened endemic Maulino Costero Forest of the Mediterranean climate of central Chile.

Key message

The demography of pioneer tree species ( Pinus massoniana Lamb.) is significantly affected by logging in Southeast China. Logging negatively affects the population growth rate of P. massoniana , which facilitates the growth of individual trees but has no effect on reproduction probability. The survival and growth of seedlings contribute the most to population growth.

Context

Subtropical forest degradation caused by unreasonable disturbances is closely related to anthropogenic activities in Southeast China, and the frequent small-scale logging activity by local people was the dominated disturbance regime in forests in this region over the past several decades.

Aims

The objective of this study is to evaluate the demographic consequences of logging on Pinus massoniana, a pioneer tree species, at individual level (survival, growth, and fecundity) and population level (the population growth rate and size distribution) over short-term period.

Methods

The size of tree individuals was combined with vital rates using various modeling approaches based on demographic data from three annual censuses. The integral projection model (IPM) was constructed and used to conduct comparative demographic analyses.

Results

Logging negatively affected the population growth rate: from a slight expansion before logging to a moderate decline after logging. This study found a significant reduction in seedling recruitment after logging, and plant growth and mortality were slightly enhanced. The survival of seedlings greatly contributes to population growth rate compared to other life stages for both periods (before and after logging) while its relative importance decreases after logging. Seedling growth is also important to population growth, and its relative importance increased after logging. Shrinkage and fecundity have a minimal contribution effect on the population growth rate.

Conclusion

Growing plants in a nursery with a similar demography to P. massoniana could be beneficial for pioneer species regeneration in that this will improve the survival rate and growth of small individuals after logging.

We investigated the individual-scale responses of five dominant species (Abies sachalinensis, Acer mono, Tilia japonica, Quercus crispula, and Betula ermanii) to single-tree selection harvesting in a conifer–broadleaved mixed forest in Hokkaido, northern Japan. Using data from stems with a diameter at breast height of ≥12.5 cm, collected during 20 years of monitoring a 6.7-ha stand, we analyzed the effects of harvesting in the neighborhood on tree recruitment and the growth (diameter class transition) and mortality of the residual trees. The effects of harvesting varied considerably among tree sizes and species. Harvesting improved the recruitment of A. mono and B. ermanii, and moderated the negative effect of the initial basal area of the surrounding canopy trees on the recruitment of Q. crispula. Conversely, harvesting limited the recruitment of A. sachalinensis by offsetting the positive effect of the initial basal area of the surrounding canopy trees. The growth of A. sachalinensis and Q. crispula decreased with the initial basal area of the surrounding canopy trees. Harvesting in the neighborhood resulted in an improvement in the growth of the trees of these species only in the smaller size classes. With increasing local harvesting intensity, the mortality of smaller A. sachalinensis trees decreased, whereas the mortality of larger trees increased. These results suggest that differences in the local harvesting intensity, spatial patterns of harvesting, and initial stand structures influence the stand-scale dynamics in response to partial harvesting in the mixed forests of this region.  相似文献

Diurnal courses of gas exchange were measured over a 1-year period in fully expanded current-year leaves in the upper (sun-exposed, 18 m above ground) and the lower (shaded, 12 m above ground) canopy of Laurus azorica (Seub.) Franco, a major canopy species of the Canarian laurel forest in Tenerife, Canary Islands, Spain. Laurus azorica exhibited high leaf plasticity in gas exchange characteristics, with a maximum carbon assimilation rate (Amax) of shade leaves about 50% that of sun leaves. This difference reflects the high leaf area index (LAI) of the stand and the correspondingly sharp light attenuation with increasing canopy depth. In sun leaves, Amax peaked at about 11 micromol m-2 s-1 and maximum transpiration (E) was about 8 mmol m-2 s-1, which corresponded with a maximum stomatal conductance (gs) of about 650 mmol m-2 s-1. Mean maximum instantaneous water-use efficiency (WUE) was 1.5 mmol mol-1 and the mean maximum A/gs was 20-35 micromol mol-1. Mean minimum internal CO2 concentration (Ci) was 225 micromol mol-1. Although high air vapor pressure deficit (VPD) caused a small decrease in gs, it remained high enough to maintain relatively high A and E. These gas exchange characteristics indicate a non-conservative use of water, which is appropriate for a species subject to droughts that are mild or of short duration. In this respect, Laurus azorica differs from its congener, L. nobilis L., of the Mediterranean region and other shrubs growing in Mediterranean-type climates in California and Chile that have to withstand more severe or more prolonged droughts.  相似文献

Fraxinus uhdei (Wenz.) Lingelsh (tropical ash), a species introduced to Hawaii from Mexico, invades forests of the endemic tree Acacia koa A.Gray (koa). We examined physiological and morphological characteristics of koa and tropical ash to explore possible mechanisms that may facilitate invasion of koa forests by tropical ash. Seedlings of both species were grown in a greenhouse in three light treatments: 100% photosynthetic photon flux (PPF); 18% PPF; and 2% PPF inside the greenhouse. Light compensation point, maximum CO2 assimilation rate and dark respiration rate of seedlings differed significantly among light treatments, but were similar between species. A defoliation experiment indicated that tropical ash was better able to survive defoliation than koa, especially under high-light conditions. Tropical ash seedlings allocated more carbon (C) and nitrogen (N) to storage per unit PPF than koa seedlings. Total nonstructural carbohydrates were positively correlated with plant survival in both species. The patterns of C and N allocation associated with tropical ash seedlings favor their survival in high light, under intense herbivory and on sites where N availability is seasonal or highly variable. Variation in carbohydrate storage between koa and tropical ash greatly exceeded variation in photosynthetic performance at the leaf level.  相似文献

Attention has increasingly focussed on fast-growing trees as a potential means of slowing high rates of deforestation and as a source of renewable energy. Unfortunately, the analytical tools for determining economic tractability of tree-growing projects lags behind the popular support to implement them. This paper brings the methodology of the Faustmann Principle, which was established for use with longer growing species, to bear on leucaena, a short-rotation, leguminous tree crop. The principle incorporates biological and economic parameters to derive a function relating the present value of net revenue to rotation length. Additionally, a method of incorporating secondary benefits, such as nitrogen fixation, is demonstrated. Results from the model are applied to Kenya. Research on agro-climatic zones in Kenya is used to indicate the potential volume of leucaena production.  相似文献

We investigated the effects of altered precipitation on leaf osmotic potential at full turgor (Psi(pio)) of several species in an upland oak forest during the 1994 growing season as part of a Throughfall Displacement Experiment at the Walker Branch Watershed near Oak Ridge, Tennessee. The main species sampled included overstory chestnut oak (Quercus prinus L.), white oak (Q. alba L.), red maple (Acer rubrum L.); intermediates sugar maple (A. saccharum L.) and blackgum (Nyssa sylvatica Marsh.); and understory dogwood (Cornus florida L.) and red maple. The precipitation treatments were: ambient precipitation; ambient minus 33% of throughfall (dry); and ambient plus 33% of throughfall (wet). Except in late September, midday leaf water potentials (Psi(l)) were generally high in all species in all treatments, ranging from -0.31 to -1.34 MPa for C. florida, -0.58 to -1.51 MPa for A. rubrum, and -0.78 to -1.86 MPa for Q. prinus. Both treatment and species differences in Psi(pio) were evident, with oak species generally exhibiting lower Psi(pio) than A. saccharum, A. rubrum, C. florida, and N. sylvatica. The Psi(pio) of C. florida saplings declined in the dry treatment, and Q. prinus, Q. alba, and A. saccharum all exhibited a declining trend of Psi(pio) in the dry treatment, although Psi(pio) of Q. prinus leaves increased in late August, corresponding to a recovery in soil water potential. Cornus florida exhibited osmotic adjustment with the largest adjustment coinciding with the period of lowest soil water potential in June. The only other species to exhibit osmotic adjustment was Q. prinus, which also maintained a lower baseline Psi(pio) than the other species. We conclude that a 33% reduction of throughfall is sufficient both to alter the water relations of some species in the upland oak forest and to enable the identification of those species capable of osmotic adjustment to a short-term drought during a wet year.  相似文献
