Concentrations of PAH (1.12-benzoperylene, 3.4-benzopyrene, fluoranthene), chlorinated hydrocarbons (α-BHC, lindane, PCB) and trace metals (Zn, Pb, Cu) in bulk precipitation, as well as PAH and trace metal concentrations in atmospheric dust samples from 14 sites in Bavaria, F.R.G. are presented for two vegetation periods (1979 and 1980). The same substances were also analyzed in epiphytic moss (Hypnum cupressiforme var. filiforme) sampled from tree trunks in October 1979 and 1980. Using mean immission values and the amount of precipitation as predictors and concentrations of pollutants in moss samples as criteria, a number of multiple regression models were computed in order to quantify the relationships between absolute air pollution data and accumulated trace substance values. Beta values of all variables help to determine whether bulk precipitation or atmospheric particulate matter has dominant influence on the uptake of trace substances by mosses. The study shows that epiphytic mosses can be used to monitor both heavy-metal, PAH and chlorinated hydrocarbons.  相似文献

Purpose

This paper aims to elucidate urban development-induced processes affecting the sediment and the distribution of contaminating metals in a seasonal pond located in the highly populated Israeli Coastal Plain. The paper demonstrates how an integrated approach, including geochemical, sedimentological, geochronological, mathematical, historical, and geographical analyses, may decipher a complicated and dynamic metal pollution history in a sedimentary environment controlled by anthropogenic activity.

Materials and methods

Three short sediment cores were collected from the margins and center of a small urban pond (Dora, Netanya), located within the Israeli Coastal Plain. Profiles of grain size, organic matter (OM), trace metals (Pb, Zn, V, Ni, Cu, Cr and Co), Pb isotopic ratios, and 210Pb activities (center and southern cores) were determined and a geochemical mixing model was employed (southern core). The watershed contour was calculated, and aerial photos and satellite images were examined.

Results and discussion

Construction activities in the watershed were chronologically associated with coarse sediment transport and deposition in the margins of the pond. The upper sandy layers were superimposed on layers rich in fine particles and OM, high concentrations of trace metals, and with Pb isotopic composition of more recent petrol. In the 210Pb-dated southern core, deep metal-rich layers with petrol-related Pb isotopic ratios were inconsistent with metal emissions history. These findings point to mobility and migration of recent contamination metals through the coarse upper sediment layers and into deeper denser layers, confirmed also by a geochemical mixing model. Conversely, in the center of the pond, homogeneous fine particles were deposited with metal profiles consistent with regional emissions.

Conclusions

A small urban pond was found to provide an important case study for understanding heavy metal pollution records in highly populated regions. The margins of the pond depicted the surrounding urban development and the induced coarse sediment erosion, accompanied with post-depositional metal mobility. Due to the proximate developing residential areas, high metal concentrations accumulated in the margins, overshadowing regional atmospheric pollution levels recorded by sediment at the center of the pond.

The interactions between the spatial pattern of soil crust development and crop cover conditions are investigated through controlled laboratory experiments using rainfall simulation. The experimental responses are monitored by using terrestrial photogrammetry and results quantified and analysed in a geographical information system. The generated categorical data is used within a stepwise logistic modelling framework. Results obtained show for the experimental conditions that the expected results of a decrease in areal crust development with increase in crop cover do not hold true. These results are being explained in terms of differences in crop morphology of the two crops used: sweet corn and cabbages, and the specific properties of the soil used in the experiments.  相似文献

Suspended sediments from the lower Changjiang (Yangtze River) were sampled to determine concentrations of Cu, Cd, Pb, Ni, and Cr. The particulate trace element values in the Changjiang are higher than in the Huanghe (Yellow River), but lower than in the other large Chinese rivers (e.g. Pearl River) and polluted rivers. A general pattern of high element levels in the clay minerals and low element concentrations in coarse sediment fractions are observed in the Changjiang. Sequential extraction shows the predominance of metals in the residual fraction relative to labile fractions in the Changjiang, emphasizing the importance of natural weathering and erosion in the drainage basin on the transport of particulate metals. Elevated Enrichment Factors (EF: the ratio of element concentration in microsurface to that in subsurface layer minus 1.0) suggest a potential influence of atmospheric input on the concentrations of particulate metals in the river.  相似文献

Straw return in situ, a common agronomic measure in China, has been widely used not only to increase crop yields and improve soil nutrients but also to remove polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) from agricultural soils. Nevertheless, the safety risks of food crops (i.e., human health risk of wheat grains) grown in PAHs-contaminated agricultural soils amended with crop straw remain uncertain. A pot experiment was conducted in a PAHs-contaminated agricultural soil cultivated with winter wheat under different ratios of corn straw addition (0% (control, CK), 1%, 2.5%, and 5%, weight/weight). Results showed that corn straw addition significantly (P < 0.05) decreased PAH concentrations in rhizosphere soil, roots, straws, and grains by 48.32%–50.01%, 11.85%–42.67%, 9.78%–28.03%, and 14.16%–31.67%, respectively, compared with CK, whereas the transfer factors of PAHs from roots to straws were significantly (P < 0.05) increased. A correlation heatmap showed that PAH concentrations in roots, straws, and grains were positively (P < 0.01) correlated with those in rhizosphere soil. These indicated that corn straw decreased PAH accumulation in winter wheat due to the increase of PAH dissipation in the rhizosphere soil, although it enhanced PAH transfer in winter wheat. The incremental lifetime cancer risk (ILCR) model indicated that corn straw significantly (P < 0.05) decreased the human health risk of winter wheat grains by 29.73%–45.05%. Overall, corn straw apparently reduced PAH accumulation in winter wheat, ecological risk, and human health risk via enhancing PAH dissipation in the rhizosphere soil. These findings provide an important scientific basis and theoretical guidance for agricultural safety production.  相似文献

Conventional methods of measuring labile chemical species of trace metals in soil solutions, such as chemical competition following centrifuging, are inadequate if the speciation changes during sampling and extraction. A new technique, diffusive gradients in thin films (DGT), measures labile species of trace metals in natural waters and sediments in situ. A well-defined diffusive gel layer distinguishes it from other resin-based techniques. It perturbs the soil in a controlled way by introducing an in situ local sink for metal ions. Resulting fluxes to the device are quantitatively measured, allowing assessment of re-supply kinetics and in some cases measurement of in situ soil solution concentrations. We used DGT to measure fluxes of Cd, Co, Cu, Ni, Pb and Zn in a sludge-treated soil at various moisture contents (27–106%). Replicate measurements showed that the precision of DGT-measured fluxes was within 10%. For moisture contents exceeding the field capacity (42%), the DGT response reflected soil water concentrations. At smaller moisture contents, changes related to tortuosity and dilution were reflected in the measurements. This technique has the potential for in situ measurements in the field where it should provide quantitative flux data on individual soils and provide a good surrogate for bioavailable metal.  相似文献

Polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs) are chlorinated hydrocarbons primarily used as dielectric fluids and coolants for electrical equipment. At present, it is estimated that 200 Gg of PCBs have been released into the environment. In 1976, the Toxic Substances Control Act was passed by Congress, requiring regulation of PCBs. EPA-approved methods for destruction/disposal of PCBs include high temperature combustion in incinerators and high efficiency boilers, landfilling, chemical dechlorination, and alternate disposal techniques which achieve a level of performance equivalent to an approved incinerator or boiler. A discussion of these methods is presented as well as various other disposal methods which are still in the research phases.  相似文献

The relationships between some organochlorines and metals in the water and in the zebra mussel of the river Seine have been studied in the Parisian area. The bioconcentration of PCBs by the mussel (Kb = 17 × 103) was about 10 fold higher than for other organochlorines. The accumulation and the release response of the mussel to alterations of the water organochlorine levels occurred within a period smaller than 7 days. The correlation between the water and the mussel levels is highly significant for γHCH and PCBs (r=0.94, p<0.01 and r=0.87, p<0.05, respectively). The Pb bioconcentration (0.15 × 103) was about 20 fold lower than the Cu and Cr (3.4 and 3.0 × 103, respectively). The Cu and the Pb levels in the water and in the mussel followed a parallel course. Cu and Pb appear to be taken up and released relatively rapidly within a 7 day period. Comparisons between the different stations along the river Seine showed that the highest pollutant evels in the water were found downstream Paris and were fairly well reflected by the mussel levels. However, when pollution reaches top values, the mussel metabolic activities are affected and thus, the bioconcentration ability too.  相似文献

Different fractions of sea buckthorn fruits were investigated for antioxidant activity and its relationship to different phytonutrients. Capacity to scavenge radicals of the crude extract, like the phenolic and ascorbate extracts, decreased significantly with increased maturation. The changes were strongly correlated with the content of total phenolics and ascorbic acid. Antioxidant capacity of the lipophilic extract increased significantly and corresponded to the increase in total carotenoids. The phenolic fractions made a major contribution to the total antioxidant capacity due to the high content of total phenolics. The lipophilic fractions were most effective if the comparison was based on the ratio between antioxidant capacity and content of antioxidants. The crude extract of fruits showed the highest inhibitory effect in both 2,2-azobis(2,4-dimethylvaleronitrile) (AMVN) and ascorbate-iron induced lipid peroxidations. The aqueous and ascorbate-free extracts showed higher inhibition in the AMVN assay, but lower inhibition in ascorbate-iron induced peroxidation, than the lipophilic extract.  相似文献

The literature on heavy metal toxicity to vascular plants is reviewed. Special attention is given to forest plant species, especially trees, and effects at low metal concentrations, including growth, physiological, biochemical and cytological responses. Interactions between the metals in toxicity are considered and the role of mycorrhizal infection as well. Of the metals reviewed, Zn is the least toxic. Generally plant growth is affected at 1000 μg Zn L?1 or more in a nutrient solution, though 100 to 200 µg L?1 may give cytological disorders. At concentrations of 100 to 200 μg L?1, Cu and Cd disturb metabolic processes and growth, whereas the phytotoxicity of Pb generally is lower. Although a great variation between plant species, critical leaf tissue concentrations affecting growth in most species being 200 to 300 μg Zn g?1 dry weight, 15 to 20 μg Cu g?1 and 8–12 μg Cd g?1. With our present knowledge it is difficult to propose a limit for toxic concentrations of Zn, Cu, Cd and Pb in soils. Besides time of exposure, the degree of toxicity is influenced by biological availability of the metals and interactions with other metals in the soil, nutritional status, age and mycorrhizal infection of the plant.  相似文献

A study of the individual and mixture toxicities of the trace metals Ag, Cu, Hg, Zn to the soil enzymes dehydrogenase and urease was undertaken. An agricultural soil and a sandy forest soil were spiked with metal salts, individually and in combinations. The anion additions to the various treatments and controls were normalized for added anions using Ca salts. The soils were then left to equilibrate and leached to reduce the excess metals and anions. Total and dissolved metal concentrations were measured concurrently in order to consider the effect of soil chemistry on the enzyme activities. Dose-response relationships for total soil metals and soil solution metals were estimated for each metal separately following a log-logistic curve fitting. Ag and Hg were the most efficient metals to reduce soil enzyme activities. The Bliss independence model was used to predict the toxicity of metal combinations. The enzyme responses in relation to the total soil metal combinations were synergistic for the agricultural soil and antagonistic for the forest soil; possibly as a result of a higher organic matter content and higher pH in the latter soil. Enzyme activities expressed in relation to the dissolved metal concentrations were more variable than against the total metal contents and consequently we observed both synergistic and antagonistic interactions.  相似文献

受人类对土地过度垦殖及不合理耕作利用的影响,水土流失正在成为制约我国东北地区耕地可持续利用和粮食生产的主要因素。在对历史资料甄别与整理的基础上,分析近代以来东北3省区人口、土地利用变化及其与水土流失关系的演变。结果表明:到20世纪中期,东北地区人口压力达到60-70人/km^2,伴随着生活方式的转变,机械化技术的应用,林草湿地被垦殖,森林覆盖率降到30%,垦殖率达30%,使区域性水土流失问题日益严重。  相似文献

Wet and dry deposition inputs and streamflow output of Cd, Mn, Pb, Zn, and Al were measured intermittently at four deciduous forested watersheds in the southeastern United States between 1976 and 1982. Atmospheric inputs to each site were similar, varying by factors of 1.1 to 2.2 for the different metals. Metal levels in precipitation indicate that these sites are representative of rural, continental areas. Metals in rain exhibit significant temporal and spatial trends, with concentrations generally higher during summer than winter at all sites and generally lowest at the more remote site. The concentrations of Cd and Pb in both wet and dry deposition decreased between the period 1976 to 1977 and 1981 to 1982. Ion ratios and enrichment factors suggest that Mn is largely soil derived in atmospheric samples while Cd, Pb, and Zn are enriched over typical soil levels. Factor analysis indicates that soil components influence both Al and Mn while fine aerosol components influence Cd in wet and dry deposition. Both components influence the behavior of Pb. Dry deposition dominated the input of Mn and Al to each site, while wet deposition was the major input process for the other metals (54 to 85% of total). On an annual basis, deposited Cd, Pb, and Zn are strongly retained in each watershed: 2% of the Pb, 8 to 29% of the Cd, and 8 to 34% of the Zn inputs were transported in stream flow. Deposited Mn and Al are retained to a lesser degree and show a net loss from two sites. Metal export is controlled by stream pH, organic carbon, bedrock geology, and hydrologic characteristics of each site.  相似文献

Concentrations of PCBs, PCDDs, and PCDFs, heavy metals (Cu, Cd, Zn, Pb, and Hg), and arsenic have been determined in a great variety of food samples purchased in different markets across the city of Huelva, located in southwestern Spain and under strong industrial activity. All samples analyzed presented concentrations below the maximum allowed by the European Community regarding PCDD/Fs, with the exception of samples within the meat group. An estimation of the daily intake resulted in 1.15 pg of WHO(PCDD/Fs)-TEQ/kg of body weight/day for a 70 kg person and 2.63 pg of WHO-TEQ/kg of body weight/day when PCBs were included, therefore accounting for a similar or even higher percentage than PCDD/Fs and showing the importance of their inclusion in monitoring studies. Meat and meat products, together with vegetable oils and dairy products, were the major food groups contributing to the estimated daily intake. For heavy metals and arsenic, the concentrations found were under the value proposed by European regulations, and estimated daily intakes were well below those proposed by the WHO for all metals investigated. PAHs have been analyzed in food samples from marine origin, values ranging from 8.22 to 71.4 ng/g of fresh weight. Pyrene was the most abundant compound, accounting for >80% in the samples investigated. The most carcinogenic PAHs, such as benzo[a]pyrene and dibenz[a,h]anthracene, were in all cases below the limits of detection. Therefore, the samples analyzed in this survey can be considered as safe with regard to the levels obtained and the in-force legislation.  相似文献

The foam stability of beer is one of the important key factors in evaluating the quality of beer. The purpose of this study was to investigate the relationship between the level of malt modification (degradation of protein, starch, and so on) and the beer foam stability. This was achieved by examining foam-promoting proteins using two-dimensional gel electrophoresis (2DE). We found that the foam stability of beer samples brewed from the barley malts of cultivars B and C decreased as the level of malt modification increased; however, the foam stability of cultivar A did not change. To identify the property providing the increased foam stability of cultivar A, we analyzed beer proteins using 2DE. We analyzed three fractions that could contain beer foam-promoting proteins, namely, beer whole proteins, salt-precipitated proteins, and the proteins concentrated from beer foam. As a result, we found that in cultivar A, some protein spots did not change in any of these three protein fractions even when the level of malt modification increased, although the corresponding protein spots in cultivars B and C decreased. We analyzed these protein spots by peptide mass finger printing using matrix-assisted laser desorption/ionization time-of-flight mass spectrometry. As a result, all of these spots were identified as barley dimeric alpha-amylase inhibitor-I (BDAI-I). These results suggest that BDAI-I is an important contributor to beer foam stability.  相似文献

Concentrations of Cd, Cu, Ni, Pb and Zn were determined in bulk atmospheric deposition collected at five stations in the Seine River basin (France), to evaluate sources and fluxes of atmospheric trace metals. Bulk deposition (wet + dry) was sampled weekly from March 2001 to February 2002 for 4 sites and from March to December 2001 for the last one. The concentrations of the elements in bulk deposition (dissolved + particulate form) followed the order: Zn > Pb > Cu > Ni > Cd. Concentrations of Zn, Pb and Ni were highly correlated with one another, suggesting a common source, related to the combustion of coal and heavy fuel. Metal concentrations in bulk deposition did not exhibit a high degree of temporal variability over the annual cycle and were not obviously related to meteorological parameters (rainfall, wind). Estimates of the total annual direct atmospheric deposition of metals to the Seine Estuary ranged from 16 kg yr? 1 for Cd to 5600 kg yr? 1 for Zn. Loadings of Cd, Cu and Ni from direct atmospheric inputs were less than 1% of those contributed by the Seine River and loadings of Pb and Zn represented 1.27% and 1.56% of the Seine contribution. Direct atmospheric inputs are negligible compared to fluvial inputs, but the indirect atmospheric deposition to the estuary was not estimated. Based on these results, trace metal concentrations in Paris have decreased by a factor of 4.6 for Zn and by a factor of 50 for Ni from 1988 to 2001. Of particular interest is the continued decrease in bulk deposition of Pb during this period, underlining the impact of policy initiatives concerning the reduction of lead on emissions in France.  相似文献

From 1994 to 1996, field experiments were conducted in two small brooks situated at the Research Station Scheyern of the FAM Research Network on Agroecosystems, in order to analyze substrate patterns and macroinvertebrate microdistribution, and the feeding type distribution of macroinvertebrate coenoses. Substrate patterns in brook sections adjacent to forests and to agricultural land differ. The structure (species and their abundance) of macroinvertebrate coenoses differed only between communities on organic and inorganic substrate types, and were independent from their sampling situation in the brooks. On a population level, distinct substrate preferences of different taxa were observed, whereby organic substrates were most significantly preferred. The feeding type reophileous shredder prevailed in most macroinvertebrate coenoses, as Gammarus pulex L. (Amphipoda) was the eudominant species. Due to this dominance, the coenoses were characterized as typical of tertiary hill land brooks, in respect to the food and current preferences of their species.  相似文献
