Bone marrow core biopsies from 63 dogs with malignant lymphoproliferative disorders and leukemic involvement were evaluated. Multicentric lymphoma (44), multiple myeloma (8), chronic lymphocytic leukemia (9), and acute lymphoblastic leukemia (2) were found. Four distinct bone marrow histologic patterns were identified: focal (6), mixed (20), interstitial (28), and packed (9). Of those with focal or mixed patterns, 77% (20/26) had paratrabecular distribution. Stromal changes were infrequent, with 6% (4/63) having necrosis, 3% (2/63) fibrosis, and 6% (4/63) osteolysis. For each condition, the interstitial and mixed patterns were the most common presentations, while focal and packed patterns occurred less frequently. Morphologically, cells of metastatic lesions of lymphoma resembled those of primary sites. Colonization of bone marrow by various cytologic types of lymphoma was independent of the histologic patterns.  相似文献

Abstract: Canine hemophagocytic disorders were studied to better understand the cytologic features that differentiate benign and malignant disease. Of 286 canine clinical bone marrow reports evaluated retrospectively, 13 (4.5%) noted at least 3% hemophagocytic macrophages. Macrophages comprised between 6% and 44% of nucleated bone marrow cells. Clinical diagnoses for dogs with hemophagocytic disorders included malignant histiocytosis (n = 2), myelodysplastic syndromes (n = 4), round cell neoplasia (n = 2), immune-mediated disorders (n = 2), and idiopathic hemophagocytic syndrome (n = 3). Differentiation of benign and malignant forms of histiocytosis was problematic. Two dogs with a diagnosis of hemophagocytic syndrome had macrophages with atypical features similar to those described for malignant histiocytosis. Furthermore, only 2 of 11 dogs with presumably benign hemophagocytic disorders had exclusively mature macrophages in bone marrow. Other dogs had variable numbers of large reticular-type cells characterized by lacy chromatin, anisocytosis, anisokaryosis, and prominent and/or multiple nucleoli. On the basis of these results, cytomorphologic evaluation of bone marrow alone may not be adequate to consistently differentiate benign and malignant forms of hemophagocytic disorders.  相似文献

Tibiae from normal broiler chickens were compared with those from broilers displaying twisted leg in an attempt to develop a pattern recognition for the disorder. Qualitative differences were determined using conventional radiography, and quantitative differences were determined using sequential morphometry. Sequential radiography revealed that twisted leg developed from a slight deviation or torsion of the distal tibiae. Progressive bowing of the tibiae and compensatory thickening of the cortex on the weight-bearing side were characteristic radiographic features of twisted leg and were most likely a functional adaptation to the disorder. Sequential morphometry suggests that the development of twisted leg in broilers may be related to a structural abnormality in the distal tibiae, namely shallow distal condyle grooves. Shallow distal condyle grooves may predispose the distal tibiae to a slight displacement of the gastrocnemius tendon and hence uneven strain on the distal condyles. Other changes in tibial morphology (diameter at midshaft, condylar width, cortical thickness) appeared to be functional adaptations to the deformation rather than the primary cause.  相似文献

Transient post breeding endometritis is a normal physiological reaction in the mare, as it is believed that an inflammatory response is necessary for the effective removal of contaminating bacteria and excess spermatozoa introduced into the uterus. While most mares can clear endometritis within a reasonable amount of time, persistent endometritis caused by either bacteria or spermatozoa can threaten the success of a pregnancy. A subpopulation of mares is susceptible to persistent endometritis, and these mares are a concern in equine reproductive medicine. Research has identified several factors that contribute to susceptibility; however, the exact mechanisms of the progression of the disease are still being elucidated. Current research focuses on endometrial gene expression during endometritis in an attempt to understand the timing of specific inflammatory processes involved with the development of susceptibility to persistent endometritis. With an increased understanding of the mechanisms involved with the disease, current treatments can be improved upon, and new treatments can be developed to target affected pathways. Inflammatory myopathies are the result of infiltration of inflammatory cells into striated muscle, with or without an association with an underlying cause. Two broad classifications are IIMs and secondary inflammatory myopathies associated with other diseases. Standard diagnostic criteria for inflammatory myopathy include the presence of weakness or loss of specific muscle group function, an increase in CK, EMG changes associated with muscle membrane instability, and histologic evidence of inflammation. Not all these criteria, however, must be present. Fresh-frozen biopsy from two proximal muscles is recommended for biopsy confirmation. IIM can either focally affect head or neck muscles or be more diffuse. MMM is an immune-mediated disease characterized by a humoral antibody produced against the unique type IIM and type I variant mvofibers of masticatory muscles of dogs, which causes inflammation and loss of function of the muscles of mastication. Idiopathic polymyositis can affect focal muscle groups (extraocular, laryngeal) or present as multifocal or diffuse involvement of skeletal muscle in the cat and dog. Familial canine DM is an inflammatory disease of the striated muscle, skin, and vasculature in young Collies, Shetland Sheepdogs (Shelties), and, rarely, Collie-crossbred dogs. Immunosuppressive therapy is the key to successful treatment. Protozoal parasitic myopathies are the most common cause of clinically relevant secondary inflammatory myopathies. The degree of systemic involvement is often the limiting factor to successful treatment. Early recognition of the clinical signs for proper diagnostic testing and institution of appropriate therapy can result in a rewarding outcome in treating inflammatory myopathies in the cat and dog.  相似文献

The combination of flow cytometric scatterplot analysis and specific monoclonal antibodies was used to evaluate the lineage of cells from six dogs with proliferative disorders of bone marrow. Scatterplot analysis was used to identify mature and immature myeloid and erythroid cells. The immunophenotype of cells in the immature myeloid gate was determined by labeling cells with four monoclonal antibodies. These results were compared to results of cytologic and cytochemical evaluation. The immunophenotype of a dog with a diagnosis of myelogenous leukemia was a cluster of differentiation-18 (CD-18) positive, CD-14 negative, Thy-1 negative, and a major histocompatibility complex (MHC) class II negative. The immunophenotype of a dog with a diagnosis of myelomonocytic leukemia was CD-18 positive, CD-14 positive, Thy-1 positive, and MHC class II positive. Although this phenotype clearly differentiated myelomonocytic leukemia from myelogenous leukemia, it was similar to the immunophenotype of dogs with a diagnosis of malignant histiocytosis or hemophagocytic syndrome. The immunophenotype of two dogs with myelodysplastic syndrome was CD-18 positive and CD-14 negative. Results for Thy-1 and MHC class II were variable. As additional lineage-specific monoclonal antibodies become available, immunophenotyping should become a valuable tool for determination of the lineage of cells in canine myeloproliferative disorders.  相似文献

Between March 1970 and February 1987, radiophosphorus (32P) was used to treat bone marrow disorders in 6 dogs; 4 had polycythemia vera and 2 had essential thrombocythemia. Activities of 32P given initially ranged from 2.4 to 3.3 mCi/m2. Four dogs responded well to 32P treatment, with gradual resolution of high RBC or platelet counts. Two of these dogs died of intercurrent disease unrelated to their bone marrow disorder, before blood counts could be stabilized. Two dogs did not respond to the initial 32P treatment nor to additional treatments with 32P, and had clinical signs and blood counts stabilized by use of phlebotomy or chemotherapeutic agents. We reviewed and analyzed 5 other cases of bone marrow disorders in dogs treated with 32P and included the findings from their records with the records of our 6 dogs in this retrospective analysis. Of the 8 dogs with polycythemia vera treated with 32P, 5 were given a single treatment that controlled clinical signs and blood counts for the remainder of the follow-up period. Of the 3 dogs treated for thrombocytosis with 32P, 2 had blood counts that responded to a single treatment.  相似文献

Inflammatory diseases involving the central nervous system can be difficult to diagnose and frustrating to treat. The clinician can maximize successful treatment of these patients by recognizing the clinical signs in the early stages of disease, following a logical diagnostic plan to identify the specific etiologic agent involved, and formulating an appropriate and aggressive therapeutic plan. Treatment will not always be successful owing to lack of effective treatments and irreversible neurologic damage.  相似文献

An inflammatory aural polyp was identified in a 1-year-old standardbred filly, which presented with otorrhea and head rubbing. The polyp was removed by traction-avulsion, and the filly showed no subsequent signs of otorrhea. Aural polyps have not been reported in horses, but they are commonly seen in companion animals and humans.  相似文献

Although aural neoplasia is a relatively uncommon entity in companion animals, it remains a group of heterogeneous conditions that can have a significant negative impact on quality and duration of life of dogs and cats. Chronic ear disease that responds poorly or partially to empiric therapy should raise the suspicion that an underlying condition, such as neoplasia, may be the perpetrator of inflammation. Early diagnosis followed by appropriate therapy improves the likelihood of disease control and prolonged survival.  相似文献

Enzyme immunoassay for prostaglandin E2 (PGE2), and radioimmunoassays for prostaglandin F2α (PGF2α, 6-keto-PGF1α, and leukotriene B4 (LTB4) were performed on synovial fluid from normal middle carpal joints of 10 horses, and from 30 middle carpal or antebrachiocarpal joints of horses affected by degenerative joint disease and chip fractures to compare the concentrations of inflammatory mediators. Significantly greater concentrations of PGE2 were detected in fluid from affected than from control joints, but there were no significant differences in the mean concentrations of PGF2α, 6-keto-PGF1α, and LTB4.  相似文献

Myeloproliferative disorders are uncommon in the dog and may be classified as chronic or acute. Excessive proliferation of mature cells leads to an overproduction of terminally differentiated blood cells (chronic MPD). Inability of cells to mature results in the accumulation of poorly differentiated blast cells in the peripheral blood and bone marrow (acute MPD). Because the lesion appears to be at the level of the hematopoietic stem cell, all cell lines in the bone marrow may be affected. Diagnosis depends upon the accurate identification of neoplastic cells and the absence of other diseases associated with bone marrow hyperplasia. The prognosis for chronic MPD is guarded, whereas for acute MPD it is grave. Accurate identification of these disorders in animals is important. Investigation and greater understanding of the pathophysiologic mechanisms may lead to more lasting therapeutic successes in the future.  相似文献

Chronic vaginitis is the most common vaginal disorder. Dogs with vaginitis show no signs of systemic illness but often lick at the vulva and have purulent or hemorrhagic vaginal discharges. Vaginitis is most commonly secondary to a noninfectious inciting factor such as congenital vaginal anomalies, clitoral hypertrophy, foreign bodies, trauma to the vaginal mucosa, or vaginal tumors. Inspection of the caudal vagina and vestibule both visually and digitally will often reveal the source of vaginal irritation. Vaginal cytology is used to establish the stage of the estrous cycle as well as distinguish uterine from vaginal sources of discharge. Vaginal cultures are used to establish the predominant offending organism associated with vaginal discharges and may be used as a guide for selection of a therapeutic agent. Vaginitis is best managed by removing the inciting cause and treating the area locally with antiseptic douches. Congenital malformations at the vestibulovaginal or vestibulovulvar junction may prevent normal intromission. Affected bitches may be reluctant to breed naturally because of pain. Such defects are detected best by digital examination. Congenital vaginal defects may be corrected by digital or surgical means. Prolapse of tissue through the lips of the vulva may be caused by clitoral hypertrophy, vaginal hyperplasia, or vaginal tumors. Enlargement of clitoral tissue is the result of endogenous or exogenous sources of androgens. Treatment of this condition includes removal of the androgen source and/or surgical removal of clitoral tissue. Vaginal hyperplasia is detected during proestrus or estrus of young bitches. Hyperplastic tissue will regress during diestrus. Tissue that is excessively traumatized and/or prolapse of the entire vaginal circumference may be removed surgically. Ovariohysterectomy may be used to prevent recurrence. Vaginal tumors are detected most often in older intact bitches. Such tumors are generally of smooth muscle or fibrous tissue origin and benign. Surgical excision of the tumor combined with ovariohysterectomy is usually curative.  相似文献
