Antibacterial activity of Alangium salviifolium flowers

The methanol extract of Alangium salviifolium flowers showed a wide spectrum of antibacterial activity against both gram-positive and gram-negative bacteria.     

Antibacterial activity and cytotoxicity of Miliusa velutina.

Goniothalamusin and two mixtures, acetogenins-A and acetogenins-B, isolated from a petroleum ether extract of the stem bark of Miliusa velutina exhibited significant antibacterial and cytotoxic activities.     

Antibacterial activity and cytotoxicity of extractives from Ravenia spectabilis

A methanolic extract of Ravenia spectabilis, an isolated alkaloid, arborinine plus a fraction comprising arborinine and gamma-fagarine (VLC), showed mild to significant in vitro antibacterial activity. In a brine shrimp lethality bioassay, the extract and the fraction were found to exhibit moderate cytotoxicity having LC50 of 76.26 microg/ml and 14.98 microg/ml, respectively.     

Antibacterial activity and cytotoxicity of extractives from Uvaria hamiltonii stem bark

The extracts as well as piperolactum C, goniopedaline, 6beta-hydroxystigmasta-4,22-dien-3-one and a mixture of cis- and trans-4-hydroxymelleins obtained from Uvaria hamiltonii stem bark exhibited mild to moderate in vitro antibacterial activity. The results obtained were compared with a standard antibiotic, kanamycin. In a brine shrimp lethality bioassay the pet-ether, dichloromethane, methanol extracts and a major alkaloid, piperolactum C were found to exhibit mild to moderate cytotoxicity.     

Antibacterial compounds from the flowers of Alangium salviifolium

1-Methyl-1H-pyrimidine-2,4-dione and 3-O-beta-D-glucopyranosyl-(24beta)-ethylcholesta-5,22,25-triene, isolated from the flowers of Alangium salviifolium, showed remarkable antibacterial activities against a number of Gram-positive and Gram-negative bacterial species.     

Antioxidant activity of Filipendula hexapetala flowers

The antioxidant activity of the methanol extract of Filipendula hexapetala flowers was assessed by the assay for ferric-reducing antioxidant power (FRAP), the assay for DPPH free radical scavenging ability (DPPH) and the assay for the influence of lipid peroxidation in liposomes, induced by Fe(2+)/ascorbate system and measured by the TBA test (LP). The activity of the investigated extract in all test-systems was found to be significant. The principal constituent responsible for the observed effects was isolated and identified as spiraeoside.     

Antioxidant activity of Cassia auriculata flowers

The ethanol and methanol extracts of Cassia auriculata flowers were screened for antioxidant activity. The antioxidant activity was determined by an improved assay based on the decolorization of the radical monocation of 2,2'-azinobis-(3-ethylbenzothiazoline-6-sulfonic acid) (ABTS) and 1,1-diphenyl-2-picrylhydrazyl (DPPH) radical scavenging method. The ethanol and methanol extracts of C. auriculata flowers showed antioxidant activity in both assays.     

Antimicrobial activity of Leucas aspera flowers

The methanol extract of Leucas aspera flowers, its fractions, the alkaloidal residue and the expressed flower juice, tested for antimicrobial activity, showed good antibacterial activity for methanol extract and methanol fraction with maximum activity for the alkaloidal residue.     

Anti-inflammatory activity of Butea monosperma flowers

Methanolic extract of Butea monosperma flowers (MEBM) was studied for anti-inflammatory activity against carrageenin induced paw edema and cotton pellet granuloma in albino rats. In carrageenin induced paw edema, MEBM at oral doses of 600 mg/kg and 800 mg/kg, dose-dependently inhibited the paw edema. In cotton pellet induced granuloma, MEBM at the same doses was found to significantly inhibit granuloma tissue formation, including significant reduction in levels of serum lysosomal enzymes (SGOT, SGPT and ALP) and lipid peroxides as compared to control.     

Antibacterial activity of embelin

Embelin, a benzoquinone-derivative isolated from Embelia ribes, when tested for its antibacterial potential exhibited significant inhibition against five and moderate activity against three strains of the 12 bacteria tested.     

Anti-diabetic activity of flowers of Hibiscus rosasinensis

The ethanol extract of flowers of Hibiscus rosasinensis at doses of 250 mg/kg and 500 mg/kg significantly reduced the blood glucose level in both acute (1, 3, 5 h) and sub acute (1, 3, 5, 7 days) treatments.     

Antimicrobial activity of flowers from Anthemis cotula

The flavonoid containing total extract of Anthemis cotula flowers, tested at the concentration of 200 microg/ml, showed interesting antimicrobial activity against both Gram-negative and Gram-positive microorganisms.     

Antibacterial activity of Punica granatum

Successive petroleum ether, chloroform, methanol and water extracts of Punica granatum were tested (in vitro) for their antibacterial activity. The methanolic extract was found to be most effective against all tested microorganisms.     

Antibacterial activity of Tagetes terniflora

Methanol extracts of the leaves of Tagetes terniflora and ethyl acetate and aqueous fractions showed different degrees of activity against Gram positive and Gram negative strains.     

Antibacterial activity of Artocarpus heterophyllus

The crude methanolic extracts of the stem and root barks, stem and root heart-wood, leaves, fruits and seeds of Artocarpus heterophyllus and their subsequent partitioning with petrol, dichloromethane, ethyl acetate and butanol gave fractions that exhibited a broad spectrum of antibacterial activity. The butanol fractions of the root bark and fruits were found to be the most active. None of the fractions were active against the fungi tested.     

Antibacterial activity of Barringtonia racemosa

The antibacterial activity of the ethanol extract of Barringtonia racemosa roots, its chloroform soluble fraction and, a there from an isolated clerodane diterpenoid is reported.     

Antibacterial activity of Picrasma javanica

The methanol extracts of Picrasma javanica, leaves, seeds, stem and root barks were partitioned (petrol, dichloromethane, ethyl acetate, butanol). All obtained extracts and fractions showed a broad spectrum of antibacterial activity, while none was active against the tested moulds.     

Antibacterial activity of Terminalia pallida

The methanol extract of the dried fruit powder of Terminalia pallida was evaluated for antimicrobial activity. The methanol extract showed a broad spectrum of antibacterial activity.     

Antibacterial activity of Kaempheria galanga

The essential oils of Kaempheria galanga root and rhizome showed antibacterial activity against E. coli and S. aureus.     

Antibacterial activity of Salacia beddomei

Leaves and stems of Salacia beddomei were extracted successively with petroleum ether, ethyl acetate and chloroform and tested for their antibacterial activity. Ethyl acetate extracts were found to be most effective against all the tested organisms.
