In bitches, the length of gestation is highly variable when measured from the day of mating, thus prediction of parturition may be greatly inaccurate when determined from this point. The ability to precisely predict the duration of pregnancy is of practical importance for managing parturition or planning caesarean section and this review analyses the methods that can be used to accurately forecast the day of parturition. At the time of breeding, determination of the luteinizing hormone surge and the initial rise in progesterone provide reliable information on gestational length of the bitch, but when pregnancy is ascertained, ultrasonography is the most useful tool to predict the delivery day. In fact, by ultrasonographic measurements of the extra-foetal and foetal structures an accurate prediction can be made both in early and late pregnancy.  相似文献

The aim of this study was to determine the reliability of oestrus symptoms of the bitch (vulvar swelling, vaginal fluid, attraction of the male, teasing) and that of the most frequently used examination methods (vaginal smear, vaginoscopy, serum progesterone determination) which indicate the stage of the cycle and allow to predict the optimal day of mating (ODM). The determination of the cycle stage was based upon the number of days left from the day of examination to the day of parturition (DTP). Our results indicate that none of the above-mentioned symptoms and examination methods is reliable alone for the determination of DTP, and even the complex picture obtained from the integrated results of different methods will not enable an exact estimation. ODM can be predicted with a higher reliability, and 1-2 days before it, it can be detected very safely. Since most bitches are presented for timing to practitioners, a scheme was created based upon a scoring system, which gives a point value to each individual symptom and examination result, and judges the bitch according to the total amount of points.  相似文献

OBJECTIVES: To compare the accuracy of two ultrasonographic measurements, inner chorionic cavity diameter and biparietal diameter, for the prediction of parturition date in small and medium size bitches. The effects of litter size and fetal sex ratio on the accuracy of the prediction were also investigated. METHODS: Ultrasonographic examinations were performed on pregnant bitches and, depending on the stage of pregnancy, the inner chorionic cavity diameter and biparietal diameter were measured. The mean value of the data of each structure was calculated and the predicted day of parturition was obtained by the application of equations derived from growth curves we previously developed for different size bitches. RESULTS: The parturition term was predicted with similar accuracy during early gestation, by the measurement of inner chorionic cavity diameter, as well as during late gestation, by the measurement of biparietal diameter. Litter size affected only biparietal diameter accuracy, whereas fetal sex ratio did not influence the estimation of the day of parturition. CLINICAL SIGNIFICANCE: Inner chorionic cavity diameter and biparietal diameter were equally reliable parameters in obtaining a reasonably accurate prediction of parturition date at any gestational period at which a bitch is examined.  相似文献

An accurate timing of parturition is very useful for managing canine parturition. It is generally accepted that parturition in bitches occurs between 64 and 66 days after the luteinizing hormone peak. In this retrospective study, we determined pregnancy length in different breeds and its influencing factors dating it from the estimated day of ovulation (EDO), defined as the day when peripheral plasma level of progesterone (P4) reaches 6 ng/ml. From January 2001 to December 2006, 162 pregnancies in 151 bitches of 53 different breeds were followed. Different parameters concerning the bitch, the litter, the type of semen and the type of reproduction were studied. The mean estimated pregnancy length in the bitch from EDO to parturition was 63.1±2.1 days. The main influencing factors for the pregnancies studied were the breed, the size of the bitch and the number of puppies within the litter.  相似文献

In clinical settings, when the reproductive history of a near‐term bitch is limited to mating dates, the possibility to accurately assess whether pregnancy is at term could be very useful in order to be able to plan a correct management of parturition or to safely perform an elective Caesarean section. The aim of this study was to assess the diagnostic efficacy of a single progesterone determination, measured by chemiluminescent immunoassay (CLIA), in predicting the occurrence of parturition on the following day. At least one blood sample was collected from 51 pre‐partum bitches during the 3 days before parturition and on day of parturition. The efficacy of progesterone as a marker of the end of pregnancy was tested using a receiver operating characteristic (ROC) analysis. Youden's index was calculated to select the optimal cut‐off value (with 95% confidence interval), aiming at maximizing the correct identification of negative events, so not to risk to diagnose as full term a bitch which is not. Progesterone concentration lower than 3.4 ng/ml correctly identified the bitches whelping the following day; however, because of the obliged prudential approach, sensitivity was low (46.88%), and 17 of 32 full‐term bitches were missed. Due to a very large individual variation, a single progesterone determination has low diagnostic efficacy, although it can represent a useful first screening.  相似文献

A 5-year-old German shepherd bitch was presented with a 3-week history of vaginal bleeding. Ovarian remnant syndrome was diagnosed on vaginoscopy, vaginal cytology, serum progesterone levels, ultrasonography, and exploratory laparotomy. Clinical approach to vaginal/vestibular masses in the bitch.   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1  
The most common causes of vaginal/vestibular masses in the bitch are vaginal prolapse, vaginal neoplasia, and urethral neoplasia protruding into the vaginal vault. Other possible causes are clitoral enlargement, vaginal polyps, uterine prolapse, and vaginal abscessation or hematoma. Vaginal prolapse usually can be distinguished from neoplasia by the age of the patient, the time of occurrence during the estrous cycle, and the site of origin of the mass. Prolapse usually occurs in bitches under 4 years of age during proestrus, estrus, or at the end of diestrus and usually arises from the floor of the vagina, except for urethral tumors that protrude from the external urethral orifice. Appropriate diagnostic workup of bitches with vaginal vestibular masses includes complete history and physical examination, vaginal cytologic and vaginoscopic examination, retrograde vaginography or urethrocystography, serum progesterone and estradiol concentrations, and, in the case of suspect neoplasms, surgical or excision biopsy of the mass.  相似文献

Subinvolution of placental sites (SIPS) is the major cause of persistent sanguineous vaginal discharge after parturition in the bitch. Spontaneous remission is common but may take several months, and hence, medical therapy to end the discharge is often requested. In this retrospective study, we evaluated the effect of treatment for SIPS with low oral doses of a progestagen. Nine bitches with SIPS, but otherwise clinically healthy, were found in the computer database of the Department of Clinical Sciences of Companion Animals. Seven of these bitches were treated with low oral doses of a progestagen (megestrol acetate, 0.1 mg/kg body weight (bw) once daily for the 1st week, then 0.05 mg/kg bw once daily for the 2nd week). The other two bitches were untreated. Treatment results were evaluated by a telephone questionnaire. Progestagen treatment was successful in all of the treated dogs; sanguineous vaginal discharge stopped within the treatment period. One of the two untreated dogs remained symptomatic until the next oestrus, approximately 120 days after parturition, and the other remained symptomatic until 6 weeks before the start of the next pro‐oestrus, 270 days after parturition. No side effects of the progestagen treatment were observed. Subsequent gestations, parturitions and puerperal periods of 5 mated bitches were uneventful. One bitch did not become pregnant after mating. In conclusion, the results of this study indicate that oral administration of low doses of progestagen for 2 weeks is effective in stopping persistent sanguineous vaginal discharge in bitches with SIPS, with neither side effects nor reduced subsequent fertility.  相似文献

While the luteinizing hormone (LH) surge has long been accepted as the key event in the estrous cycle of the bitch, historically, there has been no practical way to identify it. In the past, the veterinary practitioner had to rely on general and/or subjective information received from vaginal cytology, physical examinations, and observations. With the recent development of in-clinic progesterone and LH assays, and the wider availability of laboratory quantitative progesterone assays, the LH surge can either be identified directly or estimated by the detection of changes in progesterone. As a result, ovulation time can now be predicted with high accuracy in a private practice setting.  相似文献

A five-and-a-half weeks pregnant Airedale terrier with a genital haemorrhage was presented. It had a history of oestrous irregularities. It was found to be anaemic and Escherichia coli was isolated from vaginal swabs. Oestradiol and progesterone levels were normal. Two fetuses were aborted on day 41 of gestation. Antibiotic treatment was given. The haemorrhage ceased but on day 61 an abnormal vaginal discharge was seen. A caesarean operation was performed from which resulted three dead and two live fetuses, which died within two days. E coli was isolated from the uterine content, although the bitch was still receiving antibiotics; it was also still anaemic. It is probable that the haemorrhage was caused by an endotoxin produced by the E coli. The anaemia in the bitch did not improve the chances of fetal survival.  相似文献

Precise calving monitoring is essential for minimizing the effects of dystocia in cows and calves. We conducted two studies in healthy cows that compared seven clinical signs (broad pelvic ligaments relaxation, vaginal secretion, udder hyperplasia, udder edema, teat filling, tail relaxation, and vulva edema) alone and in combination in order to predict the time of parturition. The relaxation of the broad pelvic ligaments combined with teat filling gave the best values for predicting either calving or no calving within 12 h. For the proposed parturition score (PS), a threshold of 4 PS points was identified below which calving within the next 12 h could be ruled out with a probability of 99.3% in cows (95.5% in heifers). Above this threshold, intermitted calving monitoring every 3 h and a progesterone rapid blood test (PRBT) would be recommended. By combining the PS and PRBT (if PS ≥ 4), the prediction of calving within the next 12 h improved from 14.9% to 53.1%, and the probability of ruling out calving was 96.8%. The PRBT was compared to the results of an enzyme immunoassay (sensitivity, 90.2%; specificity, 74.9%). The standard operating procedure developed in this study that combines the PS and PRBT will enable veterinarians to rule out or predict calving within a 12 h period in cows with high accuracy under field conditions.  相似文献

The results of this study suggest that, besides the irrelevant role of body temperature measurement to predict the impending parturition in the bitch, progesterone and 15-ketodihydroprostaglandin F2alpha plasma level records could be more suitable to detect the approaching whelping in this species. More interesting was the statistically significant substantial increase in body temperature beginning 12 h after the onset of parturition. Therefore, if any significant increase in body temperature is recorded at the end of pregnancy without the beginning of the expulsion of fetuses, it could indicate problems at parturition. In this study, cortisol levels increased significantly at the time of delivery and remained high 12 h after the beginning of parturition, decreasing within 36 h after the onset of whelping. 15-ketodihydro-prostaglandin F2alpha levels increased significantly 24 h before parturition and again at the onset of whelping. Progesterone levels decreased significantly, starting 24 h before the onset of whelping and remained low after delivery.  相似文献

Endoscopy of the caudal reproductive tract, or post-uterine endoscopy, is a method of examining the mucosal aspect of the vagina and vestibule/vulva of the live bitch. In this study the post-uterine, or caudal, reproductive tracts of forty-five bitches of pedigree and mixed ancestry were examined endoscopically. The instrumentation and method of endoscopic examination are described. The endoscopic appearance of the mucosal aspect of the vagina, vestibule and vulva was observed during anoestrus and several phases of the sexual cycle, and in the spayed bitch. Visual records made during endoscopy were compared with the exfoliative vaginal cytology and behavioural responses. The results obtained indicate that post-uterine endoscopy is a relatively rapid and accurate method of detecting the sexual status of the bitch, and compared well with the other methods used in this study. It is suggested post-uterine endoscopy also has a value in allied investigative procedures or reproductive processes.  相似文献

On day 64 after artificial insemination, a six-year-old primiparous briard bitch whelped three live pups between 05.00 and 08.00. It was presented at 11.00 on the same day with failure to complete parturition. On ultrasound examination, a normal live fetus was observed and the bitch was treated with oxytocin three times during the day (1.0, 2.0 and 2.0 iu intramuscularly), with no effect. The following day, a higher dose of oxytocin (5.0 iu) was administered intramuscularly at 11.00, after a uterine ultrasound examination confirmed viability of the fetus. At 18.00 of the same day, the bitch whelped the fourth normal live pup, 37 hours after initiation of parturition and 34 hours after expulsion of the last fetus. Effectiveness of oxytocin and normal versus prolonged parturition due to uterine inertia are discussed.  相似文献

A study was carried out between April 1997 and October 1998 to determine the effect of the progesterone antagonist, Aglépristone (Alizine), for the prevention of pregnancy. 93 bitches were treated, because of mismating, with Aglépristone. The owners were then contacted 2 weeks and 6 to 12 months after treatment to gather any information on effects noted over this period. The major questions were, was pregnancy prevented and if so what side effects were observed, if any, and whether any metropathies were diagnosed. Also noted was the beginning of the next heat and, if the bitch was mated, the fertility rate. Pregnancy was seen in only one bitch. In 51 bitches minor side effects, either singularly or in combination, such as a transient itch, vaginal discharge, reduced appetite, tiredness or attachment were observed. The fertility was not influenced by the treatment and the incidence of metropathies was unchanged.  相似文献

Analysis of skin fibroblast cultures from a deformed stillborn female Alaskan Malamute pup revealed a 3n = 117,XXX (normal, 2n = 78,XX) chromosome count. The triploid pup was delivered by cesarean section 5 days after estimated date of parturition, because the bitch failed to start labor. The bitch had been inseminated with thawed frozen semen deposited into the lumen of the uterus approximately 4 days after ovulation. Gross anatomic abnormalities of the pup included omphalocele, diaphragmatic hernia, persistent right aortic arch, atresia ani, and no right forelimb distal to the scapula. The pup also had arthrogryposis of the left carpus, kyphosis of the thoracic vertebrae, widely separated cranial sutures, open fontanelles, hydrocephalus, and cleft palate. Suspected cause of the triploidy was dispermy of an aged oocyte after intrauterine deposition of the thawed frozen semen. Numeric chromosome abnormalities may be causes of fetal deformity or death that can be detected by fetal karyotype.  相似文献

There has been limited investigation of parturition in the bitch and there is little information published on clinical and obstetrical examination other than opinion and anecdote. While there are substantial data on haemodynamic and vascular changes during normal parturition in humans, little is known about the physiological events in the dog. This study was aimed at maternal haemodynamic changes occurring during normal parturition and to investigate how these were modified in bitches with dystocia (DYST) treated either medically or via assisted delivery and caesarean operation. Three groups of 10 bitches were investigated; those with normal parturition, those with DYST corrected by manipulative assistance or caesarean operation and those with uterine inertia treated by oxytocin administration. Heart rate, systolic and diastolic blood pressure, electrocardiogram and blood glucose concentration were measured pre-partum, intra-partum, immediately after parturition and 1 h later. Heart rate was high at all times throughout the study and the majority of bitches had normal sinus rhythm. Blood pressure was generally within the normal range, and although systolic and diastolic blood pressure was highest during the intra-partum period and sometimes during the immediate post-partum period, there were no significant differences between groups. All bitches had blood glucose concentrations within the normal range throughout the study although pre-partum concentrations were statistically lower than many of the other time periods. The study provides useful physiological data that will facilitate monitoring and clinical management of bitches throughout normal parturition and DYST.  相似文献

Serum progesterone concentration in a pregnant bitch with suspected luteal insufficiency was monitored by use of a commercially available ELISA kit, and exogenous progesterone was administered as needed to enable the bitch to deliver normal-term pups. Progesterone in oil was administered at a dosage of 2 mg/kg of body weight at 72-hour intervals. The bitch delivered 2 clinically normal male pups and 1 mummified female pup within 12 hours after the exogenous progesterone was calculated to have been metabolized.  相似文献

The aims of this study were to assess the precision of the estimates of the time of ovulation derived by various methods, and to define the most appropriate methods for the determination of the optimal time for insemination of bitches with fresh semen (artificial insemination or natural mating), or with frozen-thawed semen. In 11 Labrador bitches, ovulation was estimated (plasma LH surge + 48 h) to occur 9 to 20 d after the start of the cycle, 0 to +4 d after the onset of positive postural reflexes (2 bitches showed no positive postural reflexes), -4 to +7 d after reaching a vaginal cytological eosinophilic index (EI) of 100%, over a range of 2.5 to 5.5 d based on plasma progesterone concentrations of 4 to 10 ng/ml, over a range of 2 to 3 or 4 d based on 2 indirect methods of estimating the time of the plasma LH surge from plasma progesterone concentrations. Assuming fertilisation occurs 2 to 3 d after ovulation, these findings indicate that for fresh semen (with an estimated lifespan of greater than 4 days) an appropriate procedure would be to inseminate/mate on the day after the onset of positive postural reflexes; then 3 days later. For bitches not showing positive postural reflexes, insemination should occur when the vaginal EI = 90% and then each 3 d until day 1 of dioestrus (D1). For frozen-thawed semen (with a lifespan of less than 24 h) insemination should occur 4 to 5 d after the plasma LH surge.(ABSTRACT TRUNCATED AT 250 WORDS)  相似文献

The ovarian remnant syndrome is a complication of ovariohysterectomy resulting in the presence of functional ovarian tissue in the abdomen. The usual symptom is a return to estrus in a previously ovariohysterectomized bitch or queen. The available methods of diagnosis are vaginal cytologic evaluation during estrus, resting hormone assays, hormone challenge testing, and exploratory laparotomy. Surgical removal of the ovarian remnant is the preferred treatment.  相似文献
