The effects of oxygen delignification on prehydrolysed-soda pulps produced from oil palm (Elaeis guineensis) empty fruit bunch fibre were statistically investigated by employing response surface methodology (RSM). Polynomial estimation models of five response variables namely yield, Kappa number, α-cellulose, viscosity and brightness were developed, each model comprised of four-independent variables: reaction temperature, reaction time, the alkali charge, and initial Kappa number. The calculated optimum condition (95 °C reaction temperature, 60 min reaction time, 2% alkali charge, and initial Kappa number of 6.6) is capable to produce pulp with 98.1% yield, Kappa number 2.4, 97.38% α-cellulose, pulp viscosity 13.8 cPs and ISO brightness 67.1%, which were proven close to the predicted values calculated from estimation models. The results indicated that oxygen delignification which is used as the first stage of bleaching sequence has the ability to both delignify and increase pulp brightness without substantial reduction in viscosity and α-cellulose, that appeared to be beneficial for subsequent TCF bleaching.  相似文献

Non-destructive and real-time oil palm fresh fruit bunch (FFB) grading systems are of major exploratory concern for researchers in the oil palm industry. The objective is to reduce time, labour, costs, and most importantly, to increase the oil extraction rate, in order to achieve a good quality of palm oil at a more acceptable price. This research investigates the potential of flavonoids and anthocyanins as a predictor to classify the degree of oil palm FFB ripeness. This paper also discusses the relationship between these predictors and the ripeness categories period. One hundred and eighty oil palm FFB samples were collected from a private plantation in Malaysia, according to three maturity categories i.e., ripe, under-ripe, and over-ripe. Each sample was randomly scanned 10 times, both front and back using a hand-held Multiplex®3 multi-parameter fluorescence sensor. The results show that flavonoid and anthocyanin content decreased from immature to over mature oil palm FFBs. Overall, the relationship using Pearson's correlation between flavonoids and anthocyanins was r2 = 0.84 and the most outstanding relationship accuracy was at the over-ripe stage, at 90%. Statistical analysis using analysis of variance (ANOVA) and pair-wise testing proved that both predictors gave significance difference between under-ripe, ripe, and over-ripe maturity categories. This shows that both predictors can be good indicators to classify oil palm FFB. Classification analysis was performed by using both predictors together and separately through several methods. The highest overall classification accuracy was 87.7% using a Stochastic Gradient Boosting Trees model and with both predictors. The other classification methods used either independent or both predictors together and gave various results ranging from 50 to 85% accuracy. This research proves that flavonoids and anthocyanins can be used as predictors of oil palm maturity classification.  相似文献

Oil palm empty fruit bunches (OPEFB), a waste lignocellulosic material, which is the main byproduct of vegetable oil production industries in Indonesia and Malaysia, was utilized as a source for biogas production. Pretreatments using NaOH as well as phosphoric acid were investigated to improve the biogas production. Clear positive effects of the pretreatments on the yield of methane were observed. The best improvement was achieved when 8% NaOH for 60 min was used for the pretreatment, which resulted in 100% improvement in the yield of methane production. In addition, treatment with phosphoric acid resulted in 40% improvement in the methane yield compared with that of the untreated material. The results showed that the carbohydrate content of OPEFB could be efficiently converted to methane under the anaerobic digestion process. 97% of the theoretical value of methane production was achieved after the pretreatment with NaOH for 60 min. Moreover, the initial rate of methane production was also increased by more than 85% after the treatment with NaOH compared with that of the untreated OPEFB.  相似文献

The present investigation focuses on the effect of fiber surface treatment on the mechanical, thermal and morphological properties of sisal fiber (SF) reinforced recycled polypropylene (RPP) composites. The surface of sisal fiber was modified using different chemicals such as silane, glycidyl methacrylate (GMA) and O-hydroxybenzene diazonium chloride (OBDC) to improve the compatibility between fiber surface and polymer matrix. The experimental results revealed an improvement in the tensile strength to 11 %, 20 % and 31.36 % and impact strength to 78.72 %, 77 % and 81 % for silane, GMA and OBDC treated sisal fiber reinforced recycled polypropylene (RPP/SF) composites respectively as compared to RPP. The thermo gravimetric analysis (TGA), Differential scanning calorimeter (DSC) and heat deflection temperature (HDT) results revealed improved thermal stability as compared with RPP. The morphological analysis through scanning electron micrograph (SEM) supports improves surface interaction between fiber surface and polymer matrix.  相似文献

Natural fibers are largely divided into two categories depending on their origin: plant based and animal based. Plant based natural jute fiber reinforced polypropylene (PP) matrix composites (20 wt% fiber) were fabricated by compression molding. Bending strength (BS), bending modulus (BM), tensile strength (TS), Young’s modulus (YM), and impact strength (IS) of the composites were found 44.2 MPa, 2200 MPa, 41.3 MPa, 750 MPa and 12 kJ/m2, respectively. Animal based natural B. mori silk fiber reinforced polypropylene (PP) matrix composites (20 wt% fiber) were fabricated in the same way and the mechanical properties were compared over the silk based composites. TS, YM, BS, BM, IS of silk fiber reinforced polypropylene composites were found 55.6 MPa, 760 MPa, 57.1 MPa, 3320 MPa and 17 kJ/m2 respectively. Degradation of composites in soil was measured upto twelve weeks. It was found that plant based jute fiber/PP composite losses its strength more than animal based silk fiber/PP composite for the same period of time. The comparative study makes it clear that mechanical properties of silk/PP composites are greater than those values of jute/PP composites. But jute/PP composites are more degradable than silk/PP composites i.e., silk/PP composites retain their strength for a longer period than jute/PP composites.  相似文献

A study on the tensile and flexural properties of jute-glass-carbon fibers reinforced epoxy hybrid composites in inter-ply configuration is presented in this paper. Test specimens were manufactured by hand lay-up process and their tensile and flexural properties were obtained. The effects of the hybridization, different fibers content and plies stacking sequence on the mechanical properties of the tested hybrid composites were investigated. Two-parameter Weibull distribution function was used to statistically analyze the experimental results. The failure probability graphs for the tested composites were drawn. These graphs are important tools for helping the designers to understand and choose the suitable material for the required design and development. Results showed that the hybridization process can potentially improve the tensile and flexural properties of jute reinforced composite. The flexural strength decreases when partial laminas from a carbon/epoxy laminate are replaced by glass/epoxy or jute/epoxy laminas. Also, it is realized that incorporating high strength fibers to the outer layers of the composite leads to higher flexural resistance, whilst the order of the layers doesn’t affect the tensile properties.  相似文献

Recycled fibers, in comparison to its virgin counterpart, generally have reduced conformability and interfiber bonding capability due to irreversible hardening or hornification of these fibers. The extent and reversibility of the reduction is dependent on the original pulp type and on the papermaking process. Various methods are used to recover the lost potentials of the recycled pulp such as mechanical beating, use of chemical additives, physical fractionation and blending; the latter being the subject of this study using oil palm fiber virgin soda pulp as the upgrading strength material. With as little as 20% addition of virgin unbeaten pulp and considerably lesser amount of ca. 10% of beaten virgin pulp is sufficient to completely restore the strength of the recycled paper. The major mechanism of strength improvement is probably due to increase of interfiber bonding as a result of substitution of inactive secondary fibers with active virgin fibers.  相似文献

Present research investigates the mechanical properties of jute-coir fiber reinforced hybrid polypropylene (PP) composite with fiber loading variation and observes the effect of chemical treatment of fiber on property enhancement of the composites. Composites were manufactured using hot press machine at four levels of fiber loading (5, 10, 15 and 20 wt%). Fiber ratio’s were varied (jute:coir=1:1, 3:1 and 1:3) for 20 % fiber loaded composites. Both jute and coir fiber was treated using 5 % and 10 % NaOH solutions. Composites were also prepared using treated fiber with jute-coir fiber ratio of 3:1. Tensile, flexural, impact and hardness tests and Fourier transform infrared spectroscopic analysis were conducted for characterization of the composites. Tensile test of composite showed a decreasing trend of tensile strength and increasing trend of the Young’s modulus with increase in fiber loading. During flexural, impact and hardness tests, the flexural strength, flexural modulus, impact strength and hardness values were found to be increased with increase in fiber loading. All these properties enhanced with the enhancement of jute content except impact strength. 5 % NaOH treatment provided an improving trend of properties whereas, 10 % NaOH treatment showed the reverse one. The FTIR analysis of the composites indicated decrease of hemicelluloses and lignin content with alkali treatment.  相似文献

In this paper, the short carbon fiber (SCF)/PP composite foams with fine open cell were prepared with batch foaming technique using supercritical CO2. The effects of SCF contents, saturation pressure and depressurization rate on the cell morphology were studied. The experimental results indicate that the cell morphology of foamed composites was significantly influenced by the SCF contents and saturation pressure. It is found that the cell size increased and cell density decreased with the increment of SCF contents while the saturation pressure had the opposite effect. However, depressurization rate showed little impacts on the cell morphology due to the presence of SCF.  相似文献

The aim of this paper is to study the effect of fibre content on mechanical and morphological properties and thermal stability of roselle fibres (RFs) reinforced polyurethane (TPU) composites. The RF/TPU composites were prepared at difference fibre contents; 10, 20, 30, 40 and 50 wt% by melt mixed mixer and hot press at 170 °C. Mechanical (tensile, flexural and impact strength) and Thermogravimetric analysis (TGA) properties of RF/TPU composites were measured according to ASTM standard. Obtained results indicated that effect of fibre contents display improved tensile and flexural and impact strength properties. RF/TPU composites show the best mechanical and thermal properties at 40 wt% roselle fibre content. Scanning electron microscopy (SEM) micrograph of fractured tensile sample of the roselle composite revealed good fibre/matrix bonding. TGA showed that RF/TPU with difference fibre contents had improved thermal stability.  相似文献

The work focuses on the influencing effect of fiber surface treatment by BP towards mechanical properties of BSF reinforced PLA composites. BSF were treated by BP to improve the adhesion between fibres and matrix. BSF (30 wt %) reinforced PLA (70 wt %) hybrid composites were fabricated by means of twin screw extrusion followed by injection molding process. Tensile strength, flexural strength and modulus were tested by means of UTM. The morphological analysis of the untreated and treated BSF reinforced PLA composites in comparison with virgin PLA was carried out by SEM to examine the existence of interfacial adhesion between BSF and PLA. The resultant data reveals that treated BSF restricts the motion of the PLA matrix due to better wettability and bonding. Consequently, mechanical properties like tensile and flexural moduli of BSF reinforced PLA composites were enhanced in comparison to virgin PLA and untreated BSF reinforced PLA composites. The results are discussed in detail.  相似文献

This paper presents the results of a current research of the tensile properties: ultimate strength and stiffness modulus in composites using natural reinforcements. Hemp short fibres and pine sawdust were randomly distributed in polypropylene matrices to produce composite plates with 5 mm thickness by injection moulding technique. The specimens were cut from these plates with bone dog shape or plane bars, and tested in tensile and four points bending, respectively. Stiffness modulus and ultimate stresses were obtained for different weight fraction content of reinforcement and discussed taking in account the failure modes. Four series of pine sawdust reinforced specimens were immersed in water in periods up to 20 days. Periodically, the specimens were removed from the water recipient and immediately tested. The damage effect of water immersion time was discussed based in the tensile results and in the water absorption curves.  相似文献

In this work, hybrid composites were fabricated by hand layup method to hybridize treated Pineapple leaf fibre (PALF) and kenaf fibre (KF) in order to achieve superior mechanical properties on untreated hybrid composites. Silane treated PALF/KF phenolic hybrid composites were prepared on various fibre fraction to investigate mechanical properties and compared with untreated PALF/KF phenolic hybrid composites. The effects of silane treatment on hybrid composites were investigated by fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) and found very effective peaks. Effects of treated hybrid composites were morphologically investigated by using scanning electron microscopy images and analysed the tensile results. Treated PALF/KF phenolic hybrid composites enhanced the flexural strength, modulus, impact strength and energy absorption while tensile strength and modulus decreased. The overall performances of 70 % PALF 30 % Kenaf hybrid composites were improved after silane treatment. Silane treatment of fibres improved the mechanical performance of hybrid composites and it can be utilized to produce components for building structure, materials and automobile applications.  相似文献

In this paper, a novel strategy was used to prepare the bamboo fiber (BF)/polypropylene (PP) composites which greatly improved the distribution of BF. Both the raw and alkali treated BF were utilized for the fabrication of composites and silane coupling agent was used to improve the adhesion of BF and PP. The effects of BF content and the alkali treatment of BF on mechanical, thermal, morphological, dynamic mechanical properties and water absorption were studied. The Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR) analysis indicated that the hydrophilic nature of raw BF was significantly reduced by alkali treatment. In addition, the mechanical properties and the water absorption of the composites were found to increase with the increment of BF loading. Most importantly, the mechanical properties of the alkali treated BF showed much higher values than that of raw BF while the water absorption of alkali treated BF was much lower than that of raw BF. The results indicated the interaction of fiber-matrix was greatly improved by the alkali treatment. Moreover, from the Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM) images, it further proved that the distribution of BF was improved by the way of papermaking to premix BF and PP fiber. The Dynamic mechanical thermal analysis (DMA) results showed that the storage modulus of the composites was increased with further increase in BF content.  相似文献

This study presents the mechanical and thermal properties of environment-friendly composites made from recycled newspaper fibers reinforced recycled poly(ethylene terephthalate) (rPET) resin with the addition of styrene-ethylene-butylene-styrene grafted maleic anhydride (SEBS-g-MA) as compatibilizer. The effect of SEBS-g-MA addition (i.e., 10 phr) by using a twin-screw extruder to the rPET resin, followed by different fiber content (5, 10 and 15 wt.%) on the tensile, flexural and impact properties of the composites were determined. Stiffness of composites increased significantly compared to those of rPET/SEBS-g-MA blend. Fiber addition resulted in moderate increases in both tensile and flexural strength of the composites. Scanning electron microscope (SEM) photomicrographs of the impact fracture surfaces demonstrate good adhesion at 5 and 10 % fiber content. Differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) showed that the presence of newspaper fibers enhanced the nonisothermal crystallization kinetics and crystallinity. Thermal stability of the composites was improved as indicated by thermogravimetric analysis (TGA).  相似文献

Nanoparticles are gaining wider importance and increasing utility in many areas of engineering and technology. This investigative work is conducted to study the effect of incorporating basalt nano particles in composites with basalt/basalt and basalt/jute woven structures as reinforcement. The nanoparticles were developed from basalt, they were characterized and used for reinforcing composites of basalt and jute hybrid fabrics. The mechanical and thermo-mechanical properties of hybrid woven basalt reinforced epoxy composites were evaluated. Microscopic examination was carried out in order to analyze the internal structure and fractured surfaces. Interfacial characteristics, material morphology and failure was studied by use of Scanning Electron Microscope (SEM) and optical microscopy. Thermal stability was characterized by TGA. The results elaborated that the incorporation of basalt nanoparticles exhibited superior properties compared to the pure epoxy resin impregnated basalt fabric reinforced composites in terms of mechanical and thermal stability.  相似文献

The effects of chemical treatment on the flexural and impact properties of sugar palm fiber reinforced high impact polystyrene (HIPS) composites were studied. Two types of concentration of alkali solution (4 % and 6 %) and also two types of percentage of compatibilizing agent (2 % and 3 %) have been used in this study. The alkaline treatment is carried out by immersing the fibers in 4 % and 6 % of alkali solution for 1 hour. A 40 wt. % of alkali treated sugar palm fiber (SPF) was blended with HIPS using Brabender machine at temperature of 165 °C. The second treatment was employed by compounding mixture of sugar palm fibers and HIPS with 2 and 3 % of compatibilizing agent using the same procedure. The composites plate with dimensions of 150×150×3 mm was produced by using the hot press machine. The flexural strength, flexural modulus and impact strength of composites were measured and the values were compared to the untreated composites. Improvement of the mechanical properties of the composites has been shown successfully. Alkali treatment using 6 % NaOH solution improve the flexural strength, flexural modulus and impact strength of the composites as amount 12 %, 19 % and 34 % respectively, whereas compatibilizing agent treatment only showed the improvement on the impact strength, i.e. 6 % and 16 % improvement for 2 % and 3 % MAH respectively.  相似文献

This work investigated the effects of date palm leaf fiber (DPLF) content on the thermal and tensile properties; and morphology of compatibilized polyolefin ternary blend. Recycled polyolefin ternary blend consisting of low density polyethylene (RLDPE), high density polyethylene (RHDPE) and polypropylene (RPP) were fabricated at different parts per hundred resin (phr) of DPLF. Maleic anhydride grafted polyethylene (MAPE) was used as compatibilizer to enhance the adhesion between filler and polymer matrix. The composites were prepared using melt extrusion and tests samples were produced via injection molding process. Thermal conductivity results showed that as much as 11 % reduction in thermal conductivity was achieved with the incorporation of 30 phr DPLF. Highest tensile strength was observed with the incorporation of 10 phr DPLF. The elongation at break was reduced with the addition of DPLF due to impediment of chain mobility by the fillers. Initial degradation temperature increased with the addition of DPLF. Hence, it is concluded that DPLF can be used to develop green and thermally insulating composites. It is hoped that the present results will stimulate further studies on the thermally insulative materials based on natural fibers reinforced polymer composites for applications in the building industries.  相似文献

Intra-layer and inter-layer hybrid composite laminates were made with epoxy resin and compositions were varied in six different proportions. In-plane compressive mechanical properties were studied using finite element analysis and experiments, and the results found were in good agreement. Properties of intra-layer and inter-layer hybrids were compared with plain carbon/epoxy and plain glass/epoxy composites, and a comparison among themselves was also made. It was found that intra-layer hybrids to some extent exhibit better compressive properties compared to inter-layer hybrids. Percentage enhancement in compressive failure strain was noticed. Negative hybrid effects on compressive strength was noticed for both intra-layer and inter-layer hybrid configurations. It was found that proportion of carbon fiber content plays a key role in determining the compressive properties. According to macro-scale observation all composite laminates failed catastrophically under compressive loading. SEM observation depicted that under compressive loading carbon fibers break first followed by glass fiber.  相似文献
