Corrections and clarifications

In reference 12 (p. 996) of the Perspective "Neuroscience on the net" by P. T. Fox and J. L. Lancaster (11 Nov., p. 994), errors appeared in three of the Uniform Resource Locators (URL's) listed. For BrainMap, the URL should have read, "http://biad 38.uthscsa.edu/brainmap/brainmap94.html"; for ICBM/SPMap, "http://www.loni.ucla.edu"; and for Genesis, "http://www.bbb.caltech.edu/GENESIS."

D. G. Rainnie et al., in their report "Adenosine inhibition of mesopontine cholinergic neurons: Implications for EEG arousal" (4 Feb., p. 689), suggested that adenosine may mediate sleep-debt related potentiation of EEG slow-wave activity in non-REM sleep. This is similar to a hypothesis proposed by J. H. Benington et al. [Sleep Res. 22, 4 (1993)]. Rainnie et al. suggested that adenosine exerts this effect by means of inhibition of mesopontine cholinergic neurons rather than by direct inhibition of neurons in the cerebral cortex.

Table 2 (p. 1127) of the report "Rules for alpha-helix termination by glycine" by R. Aurora et al. (20 May, p. 1126) was incorrectly printed. The corrected table appears below. In the same report, the second sentence of reference 36 should not have appeared. [See table in the PDF file].

In the Random Samples item "Charting biodiversity to guide conservation" (5 Feb., p. 758), Janis Alcom should have been described as the "director of CNA ['conservation needs assessment'] at the Biodiversity Support Program, a consortium of the World Wildlife Fund, the World Resources Institute, and the Nature Conservancy."

Figure 4 of the report "Selective and ATP-dependent translocation of peptides by the MHC-encoded peptide transporter" by J. J. Neefjes, F. Momburg, and G. J. Hammerling (6 Aug., p. 769) stated incorrectly that a peptide with T as the COOH-terminal residue was not efficiently translocated. Resynthesis revealed that the peptide RYWANATRST is transported by rat TAP. This does not change the general conclusion that the transporters are selective, because several other peptides are not well translocated [F. Momburg et al., Nature 367, 648 (1994)].

In the special section "Minorities in science: The pipeline problem" (13 Nov., p. 1175), the graph on page 1199 showing the field distribution of employed scientists and engineers by ethnicity should have been labeled "Percentage" along the x axis. Also, the designation "Engineers" should have read, "Engineers, total." Labeled correctly, the graph would indicate, for example, that among all employed white scientists and engineers in 1988, about 50% were scientists and 50% were engineers. Of employed black scientists and engineers, about 70% were scientists and only about 30% were engineers. Among Hispanics, the breakdown was about 45% scientists and 55% engineers.

In the editorial "Punctuated equilibrium in scientific publishing" by Ellis Rubinstein (9 June, p. 1415), the first name of Gerard Piel was spelled incorrectly, and his year of retirement, and that of Dennis Flanagan, should have been given as 1984, not 1986.

The image in the Table of Contents for the issue of 23 October (p. 523) illustrating the report by G. D. Schellenberg et al. (p. 668) and the Research News article by Jean Marx (p. 550) about early-onset familial Alzheimer's disease being linked to chromosome 14 was incorrect. The correct figure appears on page 668 of the same issue.

In the ScienceScope item "NIH to review gene therapy program" (5 May, p. 627). Arno Motulsky is incorrectly identified as "an ethicist." Dr. Motulsky is a medical geneticist.

In Claire O'Brien's News & Comment article "Priority initiatives squeeze science"(10 Feb., p. 782), David Porteous was incorrectly described as head of the Medical Research Council's (MRC's) Human Genetics Unit. He is head of the Molecular Genetics Section of the MRC's Human Genetics Unit.

In table 1 (p. 1124) of the article "Prehistoric extinction of Pacific island birds: Biodiversity meets zooarchaeology," by David W. Steadman (24 Feb., p. 1123), the column headings for modern and fossil record were reversed; under each island name, the letters "F M" should have appeared.

In Joseph Palca's article "The case of the Florida dentist" (News & Comment, 24 Jan., p. 392), it should have been made clear that when Barbara Mishkin was indirectly quoted as saying that data gathered by government scientists is fair game for Freedom of Information Act requests, she was speaking of data generated by scientists in the National Institutes of Science intramural research program, unless those data fall within one of the statutory exemptions.

The News & Comment article "DOE ponders yet more uses for SSC" (13 May, p. 898) by Christopher Anderson incompletely identified the source of a proposal to use Superconducting Super Collider magnets to measure the refractive index of light in a strong magnetic field. The principal investigator is Talso Chui at the Jet Propulsion Laboratory, California Institute of Technology, in collaboration with researchers from a group of institutions in the United States and the Republic of China.

In the article "An optimal transition path for controlling greenhouse gases" by William D. Nordhaus (20 Nov., p. 1315), equation 5 was misprinted. It should have read c(t) = C(t)/P(t).

In Daniel E. Koshland Jr.'s editorial of 28 April, "Noitall seeks new horizons" (p. 479), it was incorrectly suggested that the world's human population is 4.2 billion. It currently exceeds 5.6 billion.

In the Research News article "Controversy: Is KS really caused by new herpesvirus?" by Jon Cohen (30 June, p. 1847), the quote from Susan Krown of the Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center was incorrect. The quote should have read, "I think we all need to be treatment activists to move the field forward."

In figure ID (p. 680) of the report "Genetic decreases in atrial natriuretic peptide and salt-sensitive hypertension" by Simon W. M. John et al. (3 Feb., p. 679), the size bars to the right and left of the Southern blot were not correctly aligned in relation to the dark bands.
